It is easy to describe a noun with a single adjective: a red car (a red car), an old house (an old house). But in real conversation we often describe something by more than one feature: not just "a car", but a big, old, red car. It is exactly here that English brings in a rule very different from Turkish and very strict: the order in which adjectives are arranged is fixed.
This order is: opinion → size → age → shape → colour → origin → material → purpose, and then the noun. That is, we first say what we think (nice, horrible), then the measurable facts (big, old, round, red). The rule may confront you with "why so?"; the short answer: language moves from the most subjective (personal opinion) to the most objective/permanent (an inseparable part of the object).
Why is it hard for a Turkish student? In Turkish adjective order is very flexible. Both "Kırmızı büyük eski bir araba" and "büyük eski kırmızı bir araba" barely disturb the ear. In English, however, a red big old car instantly sounds wrong; a native English speaker says "you don't say it like that" but often cannot even explain why. That is why those who think in Turkish and translate directly frequently break the order. Our aim in this section is to turn that order into intuition.
- İngilizcede birden fazla sıfat SABİT bir sırayla dizilir; Türkçedeki gibi serbest değildir.
- Sıra: Görüş → Boyut → Yaş → Şekil → Renk → Köken → Malzeme → Amaç → İSİM.
- Akılda tutma: OSASCOMP (Opinion, Size, Age, Shape, Colour, Origin, Material, Purpose).
- Belirteçler (a, the, my, this, two) sıfat değildir; her zaman en başta durur.
- GÖRÜŞ (beautiful, ugly, nice) öznel olduğu için hep en öne geçer; GERÇEK sıfatlar arkasından gelir.
- MALZEME ve AMAÇ isme en yakın durur çünkü âdeta ismin bir parçasıdır (a wooden spoon, a shopping bag).
- Pratikte 2-3 sıfattan fazlası nadirdir; hepsini aynı anda kullanmak zorunda değilsin.
- Aynı kategoriden iki sıfat arasına virgül veya "and" konur: a cold, windy day.
- Sıra bozulursa cümle yanlış değil ama "yabancı" ve doğal olmayan duyulur — sınavda da hatalı sayılır.
- Türkçe düşünüp doğrudan çeviren öğrencinin en sık hatası: rengi ya da kökeni öne almak (a red big car ✗).
- In English, more than one adjective is arranged in a FIXED order; it is not free as in Turkish.
- Order: Opinion → Size → Age → Shape → Colour → Origin → Material → Purpose → NOUN.
- To remember: OSASCOMP (Opinion, Size, Age, Shape, Colour, Origin, Material, Purpose).
- Determiners (a, the, my, this, two) are not adjectives; they always stand at the front.
- OPINION (beautiful, ugly, nice), being subjective, always comes first; FACT adjectives follow.
- MATERIAL and PURPOSE stand closest to the noun because they are almost part of the noun (a wooden spoon, a shopping bag).
- In practice more than 2-3 adjectives is rare; you don't have to use them all at once.
- A comma or "and" is placed between two adjectives of the same category: a cold, windy day.
- If the order is broken the sentence is not ungrammatical but sounds "foreign" and unnatural — and it counts as an error in an exam too.
- The most common mistake of a student who thinks in Turkish and translates directly: putting colour or origin first (a red big car ✗).
|---|---|---|
| Belirteç | a / these / my | Her zaman en başta |
| Görüş | beautiful, horrible | Belirteçten hemen sonra |
| Gerçek sıfatlar | big, old, red, French | OSASCOMP sırasıyla |
| Malzeme/Amaç | wooden, cooking | İsme en yakın |
| İsim | table, boots, car | Öbeğin sonu |
Adjective order is not an element of the sentence but the internal arrangement of a noun phrase (noun phrase). The basic formula is:
[DETERMINER] + Opinion + Size + Age + Shape + Colour + Origin + Material + Purpose + [NOUN]
Step-by-step build (step by step)
Negative and comparative context
Adjective order is independent of an affirmative/negative sentence; it stays the same within the noun phrase. Negation is added to the verb of the sentence and does not change the adjective arrangement.
| Element | Example | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Determiner | a / these / my | Always at the front |
| Opinion | beautiful, horrible | Right after the determiner |
| Fact adjectives | big, old, red, French | In OSASCOMP order |
| Material/Purpose | wooden, cooking | Closest to the noun |
| Noun | table, boots, car | End of the phrase |
1) Describing with two adjectives (most common)
Most everyday speech runs on two adjectives. The rule is the same: opinion/size first, colour/material/origin close to the noun. This is the pattern you will meet most in real life.
2) Shopping and describing products
When asking for or describing a product, adjective order is very useful: it tells the seller clearly what you want. It is used constantly in shop, travel and online-shopping contexts.
3) Describing people and places (writing/narrative)
In stories, compositions and description, an adjective chain creates atmosphere. Going up to 3 adjectives is natural here; more than that feels heavy and artificial.
4) Academic and technical description
In scientific/technical texts, material, origin and purpose adjectives are very productive; opinion adjectives are used little. The adjective closest to the noun usually indicates function/type.
Sıfat sırasında "ipucu kelime" yoktur; ipucu, sıfatın hangi kategoriye ait olduğunu tanımaktır. Aşağıdaki tablo, her kategoride sık geçen sıfatları verir. Ama dikkat: bir kelime bağlama göre farklı kategoriye düşebilir (örn. "old" hem yaş hem görüş olabilir).
| Sıra | Kategori | Türkçe | Örnek sıfatlar |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Opinion | Görüş | lovely, beautiful, horrible, nice, delicious, boring |
| 2 | Size | Boyut | big, small, tall, short, tiny, huge, long |
| 3 | Age | Yaş | old, new, young, ancient, modern |
| 4 | Shape | Şekil | round, square, flat, rectangular, thin |
| 5 | Colour | Renk | red, black, pale blue, dark green |
| 6 | Origin | Köken | French, Turkish, lunar, Eastern |
| 7 | Material | Malzeme | wooden, silk, plastic, golden, leather |
| 8 | Purpose | Amaç/Tür | cooking (pot), riding (boots), sleeping (bag) |
Noktalama: virgül mü, "and" mi, hiçbiri mi?
Aynı kategoriden (eşdeğer) sıfatlar arasına virgül veya "and" konur ve yerleri değişebilir. Farklı kategoriden (birikimli) sıfatlar arasına virgül konmaz. Test: araya "and" koyabiliyor veya sıfatların yerini değiştirebiliyorsan → virgül gerekir.
There is no "signal word" for adjective order; the clue is to recognise which category an adjective belongs to. The table below gives the adjectives common in each category. But beware: a word can fall into a different category depending on context (e.g. "old" can be both age and opinion).
| Order | Category | Turkish | Example adjectives |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Opinion | Opinion | lovely, beautiful, horrible, nice, delicious, boring |
| 2 | Size | Size | big, small, tall, short, tiny, huge, long |
| 3 | Age | Age | old, new, young, ancient, modern |
| 4 | Shape | Shape | round, square, flat, rectangular, thin |
| 5 | Colour | Colour | red, black, pale blue, dark green |
| 6 | Origin | Origin | French, Turkish, lunar, Eastern |
| 7 | Material | Material | wooden, silk, plastic, golden, leather |
| 8 | Purpose | Purpose/Type | cooking (pot), riding (boots), sleeping (bag) |
Punctuation: comma, "and", or none?
Between adjectives of the same category (coordinate) a comma or "and" is placed and their order can change. Between adjectives of different categories (cumulative) no comma is placed. Test: if you can put "and" between them or swap the adjectives' order → a comma is needed.
Adjective order is usually fixed but not always mechanical. If the speaker perceives an adjective as part of the noun's "type", that adjective sticks to the noun and becomes independent of the order. For example, "a French teacher" can be two things: (1) a teacher who is French (origin), (2) a teacher of French (subject/type). In the second meaning "French" behaves like an inseparable part of the noun.
Deliberate deviation for emphasis
At an advanced level, in literary or emphatic language, the speaker may deliberately break the order. But this is "not a rule but an art", and is usually done by placing a comma between two adjectives; it is not recommended at student level.
Türkçe
Sıra esnek: "eski büyük kırmızı ev" de "büyük eski kırmızı ev" de doğal duyulur; yalnız vurgu hafifçe kayar, anlam durur.İngilizce
Sıra katı (OSASCOMP): a big old red car zorunlu; a red big old car anında yanlış duyulur.Türkçe ve İngilizce arasındaki temel fark şudur: Türkçede sıfat sırası esnek, İngilizcede katıdır.
Turkish
Order is flexible: both "eski büyük kırmızı ev" and "büyük eski kırmızı ev" sound natural; only the emphasis shifts slightly, the meaning stays.English
Order is strict (OSASCOMP): a big old red car is obligatory; a red big old car instantly sounds wrong. The basic difference between Turkish and English is this: in Turkish adjective order is flexible, in English it is strict. In Turkish both "eski büyük kırmızı ev" and "büyük eski kırmızı ev" are acceptable; the meaning hardly changes, only which feature you emphasise shifts slightly. In English, however, going outside OSASCOMP is wrong.
- In Turkish adjectives come before the noun (as in English); this shared feature makes things easier.
- But because order is free in Turkish, a student translating directly breaks the English order.
- In Turkish the determiner (bir, bu, iki) is also flexible; in English it always stands at the front.
- In Turkish, putting the colour and origin adjective first can sound natural; in English this is a frequent mistake.
Sıfat sırası, sıfatlarla ilgili birkaç başka konuyla karışabilir. Aşağıdaki tablo farkları netleştirir.
| Konu | Ne yapar | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| Adjective order (bu konu) | Birden çok sıfatı doğru dizer | a big old red car |
| Comparatives/Superlatives | İki+ şeyi kıyaslar (-er/-est, more) | a bigger, older car |
| Articles (a/an/the) | İsmi belirli/belirsiz yapar; sıfatın önünde | the old red car |
| Compound adjectives | İki kelimeyi tireyle sıfat yapar | a well-known writer |
Kıyaslama için bkz. Karşılaştırma & Üstünlük; belirteç/tanımlık konusu için bkz. Tanımlıklar (a / an / the). Bu konular sıfat sırasını değiştirmez, sadece isim öbeğine eklenir: the biggest old wooden table (en büyük eski ahşap masa).
Adjective order can be confused with a few other topics related to adjectives. The table below clarifies the differences.
| Topic | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Adjective order (this topic) | Arranges multiple adjectives correctly | a big old red car |
| Comparatives/Superlatives | Compares two+ things (-er/-est, more) | a bigger, older car |
| Articles (a/an/the) | Makes the noun definite/indefinite; before the adjective | the old red car |
| Compound adjectives | Makes two words into an adjective with a hyphen | a well-known writer |
For comparison see Comparatives & Superlatives; for the determiner/article topic see Articles (a / an / the). These topics do not change adjective order, they are just added to the noun phrase: the biggest old wooden table (the biggest old wooden table).
OSASCOMP = Opinion → Size → Age → Shape → Colour → Origin → Material → Purpose. Sıfat zincirinde tereddüt edince bu baş harfleri sırala.
OSASCOMP güçlü bir kuraldır ama birkaç özel durum vardır. Bunları bilmek, ileri seviyede "kural neden bozuldu?" sorusuna cevap verir.
OSASCOMP = Opinion → Size → Age → Shape → Colour → Origin → Material → Purpose. When you hesitate in an adjective chain, run through these initials.
OSASCOMP is a strong rule but there are a few special cases. Knowing them answers the advanced-level question "why was the rule broken?"
Günlük konuşmada insanlar bu kuralı düşünmeden uygular. Sen de "boyut-renk-malzeme" gibi minik zincirleri kalıp olarak ezberlersen konuşurken hız kazanırsın.
In everyday conversation people apply this rule without thinking. If you too memorise tiny chains like "size-colour-material" as patterns, you will gain speed when speaking.
Akademik ve teknik yazıda görüş sıfatları (beautiful, lovely) azalır; yerini nesnel sıfatlar (boyut, şekil, malzeme, amaç) alır. Sıra kuralı aynen geçerlidir ama zincirler daha çok gerçek/ölçülebilir özelliklerden oluşur. Ayrıca akademik dil, uzun sıfat zincirleri yerine sıklıkla ilgi cümlesi veya "of" yapısı tercih eder: a device with a small circular display.
- "a large flat rectangular silicon wafer": boyut → şekil(düzlük) → şekil(dikdörtgen) → malzeme sırası akademik metinde de aynen geçerli.
- Akademik dil görüş sıfatlarından (beautiful) kaçınır; nesnel sıfatları tercih eder.
- Üç sıfattan fazlası gerekince zincir bir ilgi cümlesiyle (which had been polished) bölünür.
- "a rectangular silicon wafer, which...": uzun zinciri kırmanın doğal yolu ilgi cümlesidir.
- Edat öbeği (with a small circular display) da sıfat yükünü hafifletir.
- Sıfat sırası bilgisi, öbeğin ne zaman "çok ağırlaştığını" fark etmeyi de öğretir.
In academic and technical writing, opinion adjectives (beautiful, lovely) decrease; their place is taken by objective adjectives (size, shape, material, purpose). The order rule still applies, but the chains consist mostly of factual/measurable features. In addition, academic language often prefers a relative clause or an "of" structure instead of long adjective chains: a device with a small circular display.
- "a large flat rectangular silicon wafer": the order size → shape (flatness) → shape (rectangular) → material applies equally in academic text.
- Academic language avoids opinion adjectives (beautiful); it prefers objective adjectives.
- When more than three adjectives are needed, the chain is broken with a relative clause (which had been polished).
- "a rectangular silicon wafer, which...": the natural way to break a long chain is a relative clause.
- A prepositional phrase (with a small circular display) also lightens the adjective load.
- Knowledge of adjective order also teaches you to notice when a phrase has become "too heavy".
- "a tall wooden wardrobe": boyut (tall) → malzeme (wooden). Malzeme isme yakın.
- "a beautiful little silver box": görüş (beautiful) → boyut (little) → malzeme (silver). Üçlü zincir, kusursuz sıra.
- "an elegant long white dress": görüş (elegant) → boyut/uzunluk (long) → renk (white).
- "a small red umbrella": boyut (small) → renk (red).
- "a soft grey woollen blanket": görüş (soft) → renk (grey) → malzeme (woollen).
- "an ancient leather-bound diary": yaş (ancient) → malzeme/bileşik (leather-bound). Malzeme isme yakın.
- "a handsome young man": görüş (handsome) → yaş (young).
- "a smart dark suit": görüş (smart) → renk (dark).
- "a heavy brown suitcase": boyut/ağırlık (heavy) → renk (brown).
- "a pale golden light": renk niteleyicisi (pale) → renk (golden).
- "the small round attic window": boyut (small) → şekil (round) → amaç/yer (attic, isme yakın).
- "a tall wooden wardrobe": size (tall) → material (wooden). Material close to the noun.
- "a beautiful little silver box": opinion (beautiful) → size (little) → material (silver). A three-part chain, flawless order.
- "an elegant long white dress": opinion (elegant) → size/length (long) → colour (white).
- "a small red umbrella": size (small) → colour (red).
- "a soft grey woollen blanket": opinion (soft) → colour (grey) → material (woollen).
- "an ancient leather-bound diary": age (ancient) → material/compound (leather-bound). Material close to the noun.
- "a handsome young man": opinion (handsome) → age (young).
- "a smart dark suit": opinion (smart) → colour (dark).
- "a heavy brown suitcase": size/weight (heavy) → colour (brown).
- "a pale golden light": colour modifier (pale) → colour (golden).
- "the small round attic window": size (small) → shape (round) → purpose/place (attic, close to the noun).

Aşağıdaki sorular kuralı ezberleyip ezberlemediğini değil, mantığını anlayıp anlamadığını ölçer. Cevaplamadan önce "görüş mü gerçek mi?", "isme ne kadar yakın?" diye düşün.
- "a beautiful old vase" öbeğinde neden "beautiful" başta? "old beautiful vase" neden yanlış?"beautiful" bir GÖRÜŞ (öznel fikir) sıfatıdır; "old" ise ölçülebilir bir GERÇEKtir. İngilizcede görüş her zaman gerçekten önce gelir. Bu yüzden "old beautiful vase" yanlış duyulur.
- "a wooden dining table" öbeğinde "wooden" ve "dining"den hangisi isme daha yakın? Neden?"dining" isme daha yakındır çünkü ismin AMACINI/türünü belirtir ve "dining table" neredeyse tek bir birim gibidir. "wooden" (malzeme) onun önünde durur: a wooden dining table.
- Neden "a big red car" doğru ama "a red big car" yanlış? Hangi iki kategori söz konusu?Söz konusu kategoriler BOYUT (big) ve RENK (red). OSASCOMP'ta boyut, renkten önce gelir. Bu yüzden big önce, red sonra olmalı.
- "two nice cups" mı "nice two cups" mı doğru? Neden?"two nice cups" doğru. "two" bir belirteç/sayıdır ve sıfat değildir; belirteçler her zaman sıfat zincirinden önce, en başta gelir.
The questions below test not whether you have memorised the rule but whether you understand its logic. Before answering, think "opinion or fact?", "how close to the noun?"
- In the phrase "a beautiful old vase", why is "beautiful" first? Why is "old beautiful vase" wrong?"beautiful" is an OPINION (subjective idea) adjective; "old" is a measurable FACT. In English opinion always comes before fact. That is why "old beautiful vase" sounds wrong.
- In the phrase "a wooden dining table", which of "wooden" and "dining" is closer to the noun? Why?"dining" is closer to the noun because it states the noun's PURPOSE/type and "dining table" is almost a single unit. "wooden" (material) stands before it: a wooden dining table.
- Why is "a big red car" correct but "a red big car" wrong? Which two categories are involved? The categories involved are SIZE (big) and COLOUR (red). In OSASCOMP size comes before colour. So big must be first, red later.
- Which is correct, "two nice cups" or "nice two cups"? Why?"two nice cups" is correct. "two" is a determiner/number and not an adjective; determiners always come before the adjective chain, at the front.

Amaç: sıfat sırasını serbest üretimde doğru kullanmak. Odandaki ya da çantandaki 5 nesneyi seç ve her birini en az iki sıfatla tarif eden bir cümle yaz. Sonra bir tanesini 3 sıfata çıkar.
- Her cümlede belirteci (a/the/my) unutma.
- En az bir cümlede GÖRÜŞ + GERÇEK sıfatı birlikte kullan (örn. lovely + old).
- En az bir cümlede MALZEME sıfatı kullan ve isme yakın koy (wooden, plastic, leather).
- Renk ve köken sıfatını sona yakın tut; boyutu öne al.
- Rehber soru: Masandaki bir nesneyi iki sıfatla tarif et.Örnek: On my desk there is a small black lamp. (boyut → renk)
- Rehber soru: Bir eşyanı görüş + yaş sıfatıyla tarif et.Örnek: I have a lovely old notebook that my sister gave me. (görüş → yaş)
- Rehber soru: Malzeme sıfatı içeren bir cümle yaz.Örnek: I drink coffee from a big white ceramic mug. (boyut → renk → malzeme)
- Rehber soru: Bir nesneyi üç sıfatla tarif et.Örnek: She wears a beautiful long silver necklace. (görüş → boyut → malzeme)
Aim: to use adjective order correctly in free production. Choose 5 objects in your room or bag and write a sentence describing each with at least two adjectives. Then extend one of them to 3 adjectives.
- Don't forget the determiner (a/the/my) in every sentence.
- Use an OPINION + FACT adjective together in at least one sentence (e.g. lovely + old).
- Use a MATERIAL adjective in at least one sentence and place it close to the noun (wooden, plastic, leather).
- Keep the colour and origin adjective near the end; put size first.
- Guiding question: Describe an object on your desk with two adjectives.Example: On my desk there is a small black lamp. (size → colour)
- Guiding question: Describe a belonging with an opinion + age adjective.Example: I have a lovely old notebook that my sister gave me. (opinion → age)
- Guiding question: Write a sentence containing a material adjective.Example: I drink coffee from a big white ceramic mug. (size → colour → material)
- Guiding question: Describe an object with three adjectives.Example: She wears a beautiful long silver necklace. (opinion → size → material)
Kavram kontrolü: Öğrenciye "a red big car neden kulağa yanlış geliyor?" diye sor. Kuralı söyleyemese bile 'yanlış duyuluyor' diyebiliyorsa sezgi oturmaya başlamıştır. Ardından 'hangisi boyut, hangisi renk?' diye kategoriye adlandırt.
Etkinlik önerisi: Kart sıralama oyunu. Her sıfatı ayrı bir karta yaz (big, red, old, wooden, French, lovely), isim kartını sona koydur. Gruplar sıfatları doğru sıraya dizsin. Yarış hâline getirince akılda kalıcılık artar. Alternatif: bir resimden nesne seçip 'en çok sıfatla doğru tarif eden kazanır' oyunu.
Concept check: Ask the student "why does a red big car sound wrong?" Even if they cannot state the rule, if they can say 'it sounds wrong' the intuition is beginning to settle. Then have them name the category: 'which is size, which is colour?'
Activity suggestion: A card-ordering game. Write each adjective on a separate card (big, red, old, wooden, French, lovely) and put the noun card at the end. Have groups arrange the adjectives in the correct order. Making it a race increases retention. Alternative: pick an object from a picture and play 'whoever describes it correctly with the most adjectives wins'.
- İngilizcede birden çok sıfat SABİT sırayla dizilir; Türkçe gibi serbest değildir.
- Sıra: Görüş → Boyut → Yaş → Şekil → Renk → Köken → Malzeme → Amaç → İSİM (OSASCOMP).
- İki büyük prensip: (1) görüş önce, gerçek sonra; (2) malzeme/amaç isme en yakın.
- Belirteçler (a, the, my, two) sıfat değildir; her zaman en başta durur.
- Türk öğrencinin en sık hatası rengi/kökeni fazla öne almaktır (a red big car ✗).
- Aynı kategoriden eşdeğer sıfatlar virgülle/"and" ile ayrılır (a cold, windy day).
- Gerçek hayatta 2-3 sıfat yeter; uzun zincirler ilgi cümlesiyle bölünür.
- İlgili konular: Karşılaştırma & Üstünlük, Tanımlıklar (a / an / the), so / such / too / enough.
- In English, more than one adjective is arranged in a FIXED order; it is not free as in Turkish.
