Tanımlıklar (articles), bir ismin önüne gelen küçük ama son derece güçlü kelimelerdir: a, an ve the.
a / an
Belirsiz — ilk kez tanıtılan ya da hangisi olduğu önemsiz tekil şey: I saw a dog.
the
Belirli — konuşan ve dinleyenin aynı şeyi kastettiği: the dog next door.
Belirlilik için ise Türkçe çoğu zaman belirtme durumu ekini (-i, -ı, -u, -ü) kullanır: 'Kapıyı kapat' cümlesindeki -yı, İngilizcedeki the'nin işini yapar. Yani 'Close the door' = 'Kapıyı kapat', 'Close a door' fikri ise 'herhangi bir kapıyı kapat' gibidir.
Neden zor?
- Türkçe konuşanın diline böyle bir kelime yerleşmemiştir; unutmak çok kolaydır ('I am student' hatası).
- Seçim üç yönlüdür: a/an mı, the mi, hiçbiri mi? Her isimde yeniden karar vermen gerekir.
- Aynı isim bağlama göre üç tanımlığı da alabilir: a coffee / the coffee / coffee.
- Kurallar sezgiseldir; ezber değil, 'dinleyici biliyor mu?' sorusunu sürekli sormayı gerektirir.
Articles are small but extremely powerful words that come in front of a noun: a, an and the. In addition to these, there is also the case of using no article at all, which in linguistics is called the zero article. This system has a single job: to tell the listener how known, how definite that noun is.
In other words, the article is a dial that adjusts the 'shared knowledge' between the speaker and the listener. When you say a/an, you say 'I'm telling you about something new; you don't know it yet.' When you say the, you say 'we both know which one I mean.' When you use no article at all, you usually say 'I mean it in general, the whole class, the concept.'
a / an
Indefinite — a singular thing introduced for the first time or whichever one it is doesn't matter: I saw a dog.
the
Definite — the speaker and listener mean the same thing: the dog next door.
Zero article
A general truth — a plural or uncountable noun describing the whole class / concept: Dogs are loyal.
Why does it exist?
English marks a noun's definiteness not by the form of the word itself but by the article placed in front of it. Turkish, on the other hand, usually conveys this information through a suffix, word order, or with no marking at all, leaving it to context. This structural difference is what creates the difficulty at the heart of the topic.
Its equivalent in Turkish
Turkish has no true article, but it has intuitive equivalents. For a/an you can think of the word 'bir' (one): 'bir kitap aldım' (I bought a book). For definiteness, Turkish usually uses the accusative case suffix (-i, -ı, -u, -ü): the -yı in the sentence 'Kapıyı kapat' does the job of English the. So 'Close the door' = 'Kapıyı kapat', while the idea of 'Close a door' is more like 'close any door'.
Why is it hard?
- No such word has settled into the Turkish speaker's language; it is very easy to forget ('I am student' error).
- The choice is three-way: a/an, the, or none? You have to decide again for every noun.
- The same noun can take all three articles depending on context: a coffee / the coffee / coffee.
- The rules are intuitive; they require not memorisation but constantly asking 'does the listener know it?'
- a / an = belirsiz tanımlık: 'bir tane', ilk kez anılan, hangisi olduğu önemsiz. Sadece tekil sayılabilir isimle: a car, an idea.
- an, ünlü sesiyle başlayan kelimeden önce gelir: an apple, an hour. Harfe değil, sese bak.
- the = belirli tanımlık: 'o bilinen', ikimizin de bildiği. Tekil, çoğul, sayılamayan hepsiyle: the car, the cars, the water.
- Sıfır tanımlık (hiçbir kelime) = genel anlam. Çoğul ve sayılamayan isimlerle: I love books. Water is wet.
- İlk anışta a/an, aynı şeyi tekrar anınca the: 'A man came. The man smiled.'
- Benzersiz şeyler the alır: the sun, the moon, the world, the internet.
- Türkçede tanımlık olmadığı için en sık hata tanımlığı unutmaktır: 'I am doctor' yanlış, 'I am a doctor' doğru.
- Meslek, milliyet gibi tek kişilik tanımlarda a/an gerekir: She is an engineer.
- Dağlar, ırmaklar, denizler, çoğul ülkeler the alır (the Alps, the Nile); tek ülke ve şehir almaz (Turkey, Ankara).
- Kararsızsan üç soruyu sor: (1) Sayılabilir tekil mi ve ilk kez mi? → a/an. (2) Belli/bilinen mi? → the. (3) Genel/çoğul/sayılamayan mı? → hiçbiri.
- a / an = indefinite article: 'one', mentioned for the first time, whichever one it is doesn't matter. Only with a singular countable noun: a car, an idea.
- an comes before a word that begins with a vowel sound: an apple, an hour. Look at the sound, not the letter.
- the = definite article: 'the known one', the one we both know. With singular, plural, uncountable — all of them: the car, the cars, the water.
- Zero article (no word) = general meaning. With plural and uncountable nouns: I love books. Water is wet.
- a/an on the first mention, the when you mention the same thing again: 'A man came. The man smiled.'
- Unique things take the: the sun, the moon, the world, the internet.
- Because there is no article in Turkish, the most common mistake is forgetting the article: 'I am doctor' is wrong, 'I am a doctor' is correct.
- Single-person descriptions such as profession and nationality need a/an: She is an engineer.
- Mountains, rivers, seas and plural countries take the (the Alps, the Nile); a single country and city do not (Turkey, Ankara).
- If you are unsure, ask three questions: (1) Is it singular countable and first mention? → a/an. (2) Is it definite/known? → the. (3) Is it general/plural/uncountable? → none.
Tanımlık, isim öbeğinin en başına gelir; ismi niteleyen sıfat varsa tanımlık sıfattan da önce durur: tanımlık + (sıfat) + isim. Yani 'a big red apple' sıralaması sabittir; tanımlık daima öbeğin kapısıdır.
a / an seçimi (ses kuralı)
Formül: a + ünsüz sesiyle başlayan kelime; an + ünlü sesiyle başlayan kelime. Belirleyici olan yazılı harf değil, o kelimenin ilk sesidir.
Olumlu, olumsuz ve soru cümlesinde
Tanımlık cümle tipiyle değişmez; ismin belirliliğiyle değişir. Aşağıda aynı isim üç cümle tipinde de aynı mantıkla kullanılıyor.
| Durum | Tanımlık | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| Tekil sayılabilir, ilk anış / herhangi biri | a / an | I need a chair. |
| Belirli, ikimiz de biliyoruz | the | Sit on the chair (over there). |
| Çoğul, genel | sıfır | Chairs are cheap here. |
| Sayılamayan, genel | sıfır | Water is free. |
| Sayılamayan, belirli | the | The water in this bottle is warm. |
The article comes at the very start of the noun phrase; if there is an adjective describing the noun, the article stands even before the adjective: article + (adjective) + noun. So the order 'a big red apple' is fixed; the article is always the gateway to the phrase.
Choosing a / an (the sound rule)
Formula: a + a word beginning with a consonant sound; an + a word beginning with a vowel sound. What decides it is not the written letter but the word's first sound.
In affirmative, negative and question sentences
The article does not change with the sentence type; it changes with the noun's definiteness. Below, the same noun is used with the same logic in all three sentence types.
| Case | Article | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Singular countable, first mention / any one | a / an | I need a chair. |
| Definite, we both know it | the | Sit on the chair (over there). |
| Plural, general | zero | Chairs are cheap here. |
| Uncountable, general | zero | Water is free. |
| Uncountable, definite | the | The water in this bottle is warm. |
Tanımlıkların telaffuzu, önlerindeki kelimenin ilk sesine göre değişir. Bu, yalnızca 'doğru konuşmak' için değil, akıcı ve anlaşılır olmak için de önemlidir; yerli konuşurlar bunu düşünmeden yapar.
| Tanımlık | Önündeki ses | Okunuş | Örnek |
|---|---|---|---|
| a | ünsüz ses | /ə/ (zayıf 'ı'ya yakın) | a book /ə bʊk/ |
| an | ünlü ses | /ən/ | an apple /ən ˈæpəl/ |
| the | ünsüz ses | /ðə/ (zayıf, 'dı'ya yakın) | the book /ðə bʊk/ |
| the | ünlü ses | /ðiː/ ('dii') | the apple /ðiː ˈæpəl/ |
| the (vurgu) | vurgulanınca | /ðiː/ | THE place to be /ðiː/ |
The pronunciation of articles changes according to the first sound of the word in front of them. This matters not only for 'speaking correctly' but also for being fluent and clear; native speakers do it without thinking.
| Article | Sound after it | Pronunciation | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| a | consonant sound | /ə/ (a weak sound, close to 'uh') | a book /ə bʊk/ |
| an | vowel sound | /ən/ | an apple /ən ˈæpəl/ |
| the | consonant sound | /ðə/ (weak, close to 'thuh') | the book /ðə bʊk/ |
| the | vowel sound | /ðiː/ ('thee') | the apple /ðiː ˈæpəl/ |
| the (stressed) | when emphasised | /ðiː/ | THE place to be /ðiː/ |
1) a/an — ilk kez tanıtma ve 'herhangi biri'
Bir şeyi konuşmaya ilk kez soktuğunda ya da hangisi olduğu önemli olmadığında a/an kullanırsın. Dinleyici o an o şeyi tanımıyordur; sen ona yeni bir bilgi veriyorsundur.
2) the — belirli, ikimizin de bildiği
Dinleyici hangisini kastettiğini biliyorsa the kullanırsın. Bunu bilmesinin birkaç yolu vardır: daha önce anıldı, ortamda tek örneği var, ya da bağlamdan bellidir.
3) the — benzersiz (dünyada tek olan) şeyler
Ortamda ya da dünyada tek örneği olan şeyler doğrudan the alır, çünkü belirsizliğe yer yoktur.
4) sıfır tanımlık — genel gerçekler (çoğul/sayılamayan)
Bir türün ya da kavramın tamamı hakkında genel bir şey söylerken çoğul veya sayılamayan isimlerle hiç tanımlık kullanmazsın. Bu, İngilizcenin en 'Türkçeye ters' kısmıdır çünkü kulağa eksikmiş gibi gelir.
5) Sabit kalıplar ve kurumlar (go to school, in bed)
Bazı yerler, kurum olarak 'amacıyla' kastedildiğinde tanımlıksız kullanılır. Binanın kendisini fiziksel olarak kastedersen the geri gelir. Bu ince ama çok kullanılan bir ayrımdır.
1) a/an — introducing for the first time and 'any one'
You use a/an when you bring something into the conversation for the first time or when which one it is doesn't matter. At that moment the listener doesn't know that thing; you are giving them new information.
2) the — definite, the one we both know
You use the when the listener knows which one you mean. There are a few ways they might know: it was mentioned before, there is only one instance in the setting, or it is clear from context.
3) the — unique (one-of-a-kind in the world) things
Things that have only one instance in the setting or in the world take the directly, because there is no room for indefiniteness.
4) zero article — general truths (plural/uncountable)
When you say something general about the whole of a class or concept, you use no article at all with plural or uncountable nouns. This is the part of English most 'contrary to Turkish', because it sounds as if something is missing.
5) Fixed expressions and institutions (go to school, in bed)
Some places are used without an article when they are meant as an institution 'for its purpose'. If you mean the building itself physically, the comes back. This is a subtle but very common distinction.
Coğrafi ve özel isimlerde tanımlık kullanımı büyük ölçüde ezber-kalıp mantığındadır ama içinde bir düzen vardır: çoğul ve 'birleşik' isimler genelde the alır, tekil isimler genelde almaz.
| Kategori | the alır mı? | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| Kıtalar, tek ülkeler, şehirler | Hayır | Africa, Turkey, Ankara, Paris |
| Çoğul/birleşik ülkeler | Evet | the USA, the UK, the Netherlands |
| Göller, tek dağlar | Hayır | Lake Van, Mount Everest |
| Nehirler, denizler, okyanuslar | Evet | the Nile, the Black Sea, the Pacific |
| Dağ sıraları, ada grupları | Evet | the Alps, the Maldives |
| Sokaklar | Hayır | Oxford Street, Bağdat Avenue |
| Oteller, müzeler, gazeteler | Evet | the Hilton, the Louvre, the Guardian |
With geographical and proper nouns, article use is largely a matter of memorised patterns, but there is an order within it: plural and 'compound' names usually take the, while singular names usually don't.
| Category | Takes the? | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Continents, single countries, cities | No | Africa, Turkey, Ankara, Paris |
| Plural/compound countries | Yes | the USA, the UK, the Netherlands |
| Lakes, single mountains | No | Lake Van, Mount Everest |
| Rivers, seas, oceans | Yes | the Nile, the Black Sea, the Pacific |
| Mountain ranges, island groups | Yes | the Alps, the Maldives |
| Streets | No | Oxford Street, Bağdat Avenue |
| Hotels, museums, newspapers | Yes | the Hilton, the Louvre, the Guardian |
Tanımlık seçimi çoğu zaman 'doğru/yanlış' değil, anlam farkı meselesidir. Aynı isimle a, the ya da hiçbiri kullanmak cümlenin ne kastettiğini kökten değiştirir. Aşağıdaki örneklerde aynı ismin üç halini karşılaştır.
Nezaket ve yumuşatmada da a/an işe yarar: 'Could I ask a question?' demek, 'the question' demekten daha az dayatmacıdır çünkü konuyu yeni ve hafif tutar.
The choice of article is often not a matter of 'right/wrong' but of a difference in meaning. Using a, the, or none with the same noun radically changes what the sentence means. In the examples below, compare the three versions of the same noun.
a/an is also useful for politeness and softening: saying 'Could I ask a question?' is less demanding than saying 'the question', because it keeps the matter new and light.
Türkçe belirliliği tanımlıkla değil, çoğunlukla belirtme durumu ekiyle (-ı/-i/-u/-ü) ve söz dizimiyle gösterir. Bu yüzden Türkçe konuşan, İngilizceye çevirirken tanımlığı ya tümden unutur ya da yanlış olanı seçer. Aşağıdaki eşleştirmeler bu köprüyü kurar.
- 'Bir kitap okudum' → 'I read a book.' (belirsiz, 'bir' var)
- 'Kitabı okudum' → 'I read the book.' (belirtme eki -ı = belirli)
- 'Kitap okumayı severim' → 'I like reading books.' (genel → çoğul, sıfır tanımlık)
- 'Öğretmenim.' → 'I'm a teacher.' (Türkçede 'bir' yok ama İngilizcede zorunlu)
- 'Güneş sıcak.' → 'The sun is hot.' (benzersiz → the; Türkçede işaretsiz)
Turkish shows definiteness not with an article but mostly with the accusative case suffix (-ı/-i/-u/-ü) and with word order. That is why a Turkish speaker, when translating into English, either forgets the article entirely or chooses the wrong one. The pairings below build this bridge.
- 'Bir kitap okudum' → 'I read a book.' (indefinite, 'bir' is present)
- 'Kitabı okudum' → 'I read the book.' (the accusative suffix -ı = definite)
- 'Kitap okumayı severim' → 'I like reading books.' (general → plural, zero article)
- 'Öğretmenim.' → 'I'm a teacher.' (there is no 'bir' in Turkish but it is obligatory in English)
- 'Güneş sıcak.' → 'The sun is hot.' (unique → the; unmarked in Turkish)
Tanımlıklar, ismin önüne gelen diğer 'belirleyicilerle' (determiners) aynı yeri paylaşır ve çoğu zaman onlarla karıştırılır. Aşağıdaki tablo, tanımlıkları komşularından ayırır.
| Yapı | İşlevi | Örnek | İlgili konu |
|---|---|---|---|
| a / an | belirsiz, tekil, 'bir tane' | a car | — |
| the | belirli, bilinen | the car | — |
| some / any | belirsiz miktar (çoğul/sayılamayan) | some cars, any water | some / any / no |
| much / many / a few | miktar belirleme | many cars, a little water | Miktar Belirteçleri |
| this / that | işaret; yakın/uzak belirli | this car | — |
a/an yalnızca tekil sayılabilir bir isimle kullanılır; çoğul ya da sayılamayan isimde onun yerine some/any gelir.
En kritik ayrım şudur: a/an yalnızca tekil sayılabilir isimle gider. Çoğul veya sayılamayan bir isimde 'bir tane değil, biraz/bir miktar' demek istiyorsan a/an değil, some/any ya da bir miktar sözcüğü kullanırsın. Detay için some / any / no ve Miktar Belirteçleri konularına bak. Sayılabilirlik ayrımının kendisi ise Sayılabilir & Sayılamayan konusunda.
Articles share the same slot as other 'determiners' that come in front of a noun, and are often confused with them. The table below separates articles from their neighbours.
| Structure | Function | Example | Related topic |
|---|---|---|---|
| a / an | indefinite, singular, 'one' | a car | — |
| the | definite, known | the car | — |
| some / any | indefinite quantity (plural/uncountable) | some cars, any water | some / any / no |
| much / many / a few | expressing quantity | many cars, a little water | Quantifiers |
| this / that | demonstrative; near/far definite | this car | — |
a/an is used only with a singular countable noun; with a plural or uncountable noun, some/any takes its place.
The most crucial distinction is this: a/an goes only with a singular countable noun. With a plural or uncountable noun, if you want to say 'not one, but some/a certain amount', you use not a/an but some/any or a quantity word. For details, see some / any / no and Quantifiers. The countability distinction itself is covered in Countable & Uncountable.
Tanımlık sisteminde bazı kalıplar mantığın dışına çıkar ve neredeyse ezber gerektirir. Bunlar sık kullanıldığından öğrenmeye değer.
- Çalgılar the alır: play the piano, the violin — ama sporlar almaz: play football.
- Öğün adları tanımlıksızdır: have breakfast, after lunch — ama belli bir öğün the alır: the dinner we had was great.
- Ulaşımda 'by' kalıbı tanımlıksızdır: by car, by bus, by plane — ama 'on the bus' (içinde) the alır.
- Diller ve okul dersleri tanımlıksız: I speak English, I study history — ama 'the English language' the alır.
- the + sıfat = o grup insanlar: the rich, the poor, the elderly ('zenginler, yoksullar').
- the + tekil isim = tüm tür (bilimsel/genelleme): The tiger is an endangered species.
In the article system, some patterns fall outside the logic and require almost pure memorisation. Because they are used often, they are worth learning.
- Instruments take the: play the piano, the violin — but sports don't: play football.
- Meal names are article-less: have breakfast, after lunch — but a specific meal takes the: the dinner we had was great.
- In transport the 'by' pattern is article-less: by car, by bus, by plane — but 'on the bus' (inside it) takes the.
- Languages and school subjects are article-less: I speak English, I study history — but 'the English language' takes the.
- the + adjective = that group of people: the rich, the poor, the elderly ('the rich, the poor').
- the + singular noun = the whole class (scientific/generalisation): The tiger is an endangered species.
Günlük konuşmada tanımlık kararı çok hızlı verilir ve çoğu zaman zayıf (vurgusuz) okunur. Aşağıdaki diyalog, aynı nesnenin nasıl a → the geçişi yaptığını doğal bir bağlamda gösterir.
In everyday speech the article decision is made very quickly and is usually read weak (unstressed). The dialogue below shows, in a natural context, how the same object makes the a → the transition.
Akademik yazıda tanımlık seçimi kesinlik ve nesnellik taşır. İlk kez tanımlanan bir kavram a/an ile sunulur, sonrasında the ile geri anılır; genellemeler ise çoğul + sıfır tanımlık ya da resmî 'the + tekil' ile yapılır. Yanlış tanımlık, akademik metinde amatörce durur.
- The relationship (belli, konu olarak sunulan tek ilişki) → the.
- an influential experiment: ilk kez tanıtılan bir deney → a/an; 'influential' ünlü sesle başlar → an.
- a series of images: bir dizi (belirsiz, ilk anış) → a.
- The findings / The effect / the results: bu çalışmaya ait belli öğeler → the.
- language and thought, culture: soyut/genel kavramlar → sıfır tanımlık.
- the grammar of a language: 'a language' herhangi bir dil (genel), 'the grammar' o dilin belli dilbilgisi → tanımlıkların birlikte dansı.
In academic writing the choice of article carries precision and objectivity. A concept defined for the first time is presented with a/an, then referred back to with the; generalisations are made either with plural + zero article or with the formal 'the + singular'. A wrong article looks amateurish in an academic text.
- The relationship (definite, the single relationship presented as the topic) → the.
- an influential experiment: an experiment introduced for the first time → a/an; 'influential' begins with a vowel sound → an.
- a series of images: a series (indefinite, first mention) → a.
- The findings / The effect / the results: definite items belonging to this study → the.
- language and thought, culture: abstract/general concepts → zero article.
- the grammar of a language: 'a language' is any language (general), 'the grammar' is that language's definite grammar → the dance of articles together.
- a trip, a cheap flight, a small town, a backpack, a bus, a seat, a beach, a notebook, a book, a tiny restaurant: hepsi ilk anış → belirsiz a/an.
- the idea, the plane, the airport, the town centre, the bus, the window, the directions, the walk, the beach, the sand, the water, the owner, the fish, the sun, the sea: bağlamdan/önceki anıştan belli → the.
- an old woman → sonra 'she' ile geri anılıyor; 'a beach' → sonra 'the beach' olur: klasik ilk anış/ikinci anış geçişi.
- an hour, an old lighthouse: 'hour' /au/ ünlü sesi, 'old' ünlü sesi → an.
- the sun, the sea: benzersiz/bağlamdaki tek örnek → the.
- swimming, reading, freedom: soyut/genel eylem ve kavramlar → sıfır tanımlık.
- the best meal, the best experiences: en üstünlük → the.
- a kind of freedom, a single simple decision: 'bir tür', 'tek bir' → belirsiz a.
- a trip, a cheap flight, a small town, a backpack, a bus, a seat, a beach, a notebook, a book, a tiny restaurant: all first mentions → indefinite a/an.
- the idea, the plane, the airport, the town centre, the bus, the window, the directions, the walk, the beach, the sand, the water, the owner, the fish, the sun, the sea: definite from context/earlier mention → the.
- an old woman → later referred back to with 'she'; 'a beach' → later becomes 'the beach': the classic first-mention/second-mention transition.
- an hour, an old lighthouse: 'hour' has a /au/ vowel sound, 'old' a vowel sound → an.
- the sun, the sea: unique / the only instance in context → the.
- swimming, reading, freedom: abstract/general actions and concepts → zero article.
- the best meal, the best experiences: superlatives → the.
- a kind of freedom, a single simple decision: 'a kind of', 'a single' → indefinite a.

Aşağıdaki sorular kural ezberini değil, anlamı ölçer. Her birinde 'dinleyici bunu biliyor mu, genel mi kastediliyor mu?' diye düşün.
- 'I saw a movie' ile 'I saw the movie' arasında ne fark var?'a movie' = herhangi bir film (ilk kez söylüyorum, hangisi olduğu önemsiz); 'the movie' = ikimizin de bildiği belli bir film (örn. daha önce konuştuğumuz).
- 'Dogs are friendly' neden 'The dogs are friendly' değil?Genel olarak tüm köpekler kastedildiği için genelleme yapılıyor; genellemede çoğul + sıfır tanımlık kullanılır. 'The dogs' deseydik 'belli o köpekler' olurdu.
- 'He is in prison' ile 'He is in the prison' aynı mı?Hayır. 'in prison' = mahkûm olarak (kurumun amacı); 'in the prison' = binanın içinde, örneğin ziyaretçi ya da çalışan olarak.
- Neden 'the sun' deriz ama 'a star' diyebiliriz?Bizim için güneş tektir (benzersiz) → the. Yıldız ise gökte milyonlarca olduğundan herhangi biri kastedilince → a star.
- 'I need water' ile 'I need the water' arasındaki fark nedir?'water' genel/miktarsız (susadım, biraz su lazım) → sıfır; 'the water' belli bir su (örn. masadaki şişedeki su) → the.
The questions below test not rote rules but meaning. For each one, think 'does the listener know this, or is it meant generally?'
- What is the difference between 'I saw a movie' and 'I saw the movie'?'a movie' = any movie (I'm saying it for the first time, which one doesn't matter); 'the movie' = a particular movie we both know (e.g. one we talked about before).
- Why is it 'Dogs are friendly' and not 'The dogs are friendly'?Because dogs in general are meant, a generalisation is being made; a generalisation uses plural + zero article. If we said 'The dogs' it would mean 'those particular dogs'.
- Are 'He is in prison' and 'He is in the prison' the same? No. 'in prison' = as a prisoner (the institution's purpose); 'in the prison' = inside the building, for example as a visitor or an employee.
- Why do we say 'the sun' but we can say 'a star'?For us the sun is unique → the. A star, however, being one of millions in the sky, becomes → a star when any one is meant.
- What is the difference between 'I need water' and 'I need the water'?'water' is general/without quantity (I'm thirsty, I need some water) → zero; 'the water' is a particular water (e.g. the water in the bottle on the table) → the.

Görev: Gittiğin ya da hayal ettiğin bir yeri (bir şehir, bir kafe, bir ada) 6-8 cümleyle anlat. Amaç, üç tanımlık türünü de doğru ve bilinçli kullanmak.
Rehber sorular: (1) Yeni bir şeyi ilk kez tanıtırken a/an kullandın mı? (2) Aynı şeyi tekrar anınca the'ye geçtin mi? (3) Genel bir gerçeği (insanlar, yemek, doğa) çoğul/sayılamayan + sıfır tanımlıkla mı söyledin? (4) Benzersiz şeyler (güneş, deniz, merkez) için the kullandın mı?
Örnek cevap: 'Last year I visited a small island in the Aegean Sea. The island had only one village, and the streets were too narrow for cars. Tourists usually come for the beaches, but I loved the quiet mornings most. Life there was simple and slow. Every evening, an old fisherman sold fresh fish by the harbour, and the whole village smelled of the sea. I would go back in a heartbeat.' (Türkçesi: 'Geçen yıl Ege Denizi'nde küçük bir adayı ziyaret ettim. Adanın tek bir köyü vardı ve sokaklar arabalar için fazla dardı. Turistler genelde plajlar için gelir ama ben en çok sessiz sabahları sevdim. Oradaki hayat basit ve yavaştı. Her akşam yaşlı bir balıkçı limanda taze balık satardı ve bütün köy deniz kokardı. Bir saniye düşünmeden geri dönerdim.')
Task: Describe a place you have been to or imagine (a city, a cafe, an island) in 6-8 sentences. The aim is to use all three types of article correctly and consciously.
Guiding questions: (1) Did you use a/an when introducing something new for the first time? (2) Did you switch to the when you mentioned the same thing again? (3) Did you state a general truth (people, food, nature) with a plural/uncountable + zero article? (4) Did you use the for unique things (the sun, the sea, the centre)?
Sample answer: 'Last year I visited a small island in the Aegean Sea. The island had only one village, and the streets were too narrow for cars. Tourists usually come for the beaches, but I loved the quiet mornings most. Life there was simple and slow. Every evening, an old fisherman sold fresh fish by the harbour, and the whole village smelled of the sea. I would go back in a heartbeat.' Türk öğrencinin iki kök hatası vardır: (1) tanımlığı unutmak (I am student), (2) Türkçedeki belirtme ekini görüp gereksiz the koymak (I like the dogs). Bu ikisini erken teşhis et; drilleri buna göre kur.
Etkinlik önerisi: 'Resim betimleme': Öğrenciye kalabalık bir resim ver. İlk anışta a/an, tekrar anışta the kullanmasını iste ('There's a dog. The dog is chasing a cat.'). Ardından 'genelleme turu': resimden bağımsız genel gerçekler söyletip sıfır tanımlığı pekiştir ('Dogs like bones.'). Zincirleme hikâye oyunu da a→the geçişini eğlenceli biçimde otomatikleştirir.
The Turkish student has two root mistakes: (1) forgetting the article (I am student), (2) seeing the accusative suffix in Turkish and adding an unnecessary the (I like the dogs). Diagnose these two early; build your drills accordingly.
Activity suggestion: 'Picture description': give the student a crowded picture. Ask them to use a/an on first mention and the on a repeated mention ('There's a dog. The dog is chasing a cat.'). Then a 'generalisation round': have them state general truths independent of the picture to reinforce the zero article ('Dogs like bones.'). A chain-story game also automates the a→the transition in a fun way.
- Tanımlık, dinleyicinin o ismi tanıyıp tanımadığını (belirlilik) gösterir; Türkçede karşılığı yoktur.
- a/an: belirsiz, ilk anış, 'bir tane', yalnızca tekil sayılabilir isimle.
- a↔an seçimi sese göredir: ünlü sesinden önce an (an hour), ünsüz sesinden önce a (a university).
- the: belirli, bilinen, benzersiz; tekil/çoğul/sayılamayan hepsiyle kullanılır.
- Sıfır tanımlık: çoğul veya sayılamayan isimle genel gerçek (Dogs bark. Water is life.).
- İlk anışta a/an, sonraki anışta the: 'a phone → the phone'.
- En üstünlük, benzersiz nesneler ve 'only/same' daima the alır.
- 'go to school/bed/work', spor adları, öğünler, diller genelde tanımlıksızdır; çalgılar the alır.
- Çoğul/birleşik ülkeler ve nehir/deniz/dağ sıraları the alır; tek ülke/şehir/göl almaz.
- En sık iki hata: tanımlığı unutmak (I am student) ve gereksiz the koymak (I like the dogs). Sayılabilirlik için Sayılabilir & Sayılamayan, miktar için Miktar Belirteçleri ve some / any / no konularına bak.
- An article shows whether the listener recognises the noun (definiteness); there is no equivalent in Turkish.
- a/an: indefinite, first mention, 'one', only with a singular countable noun.
- The a↔an choice is based on sound: an before a vowel sound (an hour), a before a consonant sound (a university).
- the: definite, known, unique; used with singular/plural/uncountable alike.
- Zero article: a general truth with a plural or uncountable noun (Dogs bark. Water is life.).
- a/an on the first mention, the on the next mention: 'a phone → the phone'.
- Superlatives, unique objects and 'only/same' always take the.
- 'go to school/bed/work', sports names, meals and languages are usually article-less; instruments take the.
- Plural/compound countries and rivers/seas/mountain ranges take the; a single country/city/lake does not.
- The two most common mistakes: forgetting the article (I am student) and adding an unnecessary the (I like the dogs). For countability see Countable & Uncountable, for quantity see Quantifiers and some / any / no.
