Comparative
İki şeyi kıyaslar: A is taller than B. — "daha ..."Superlative
Bir grubun içinde tek uç: A is the tallest of all. — "en ..."İngilizcenin zorluğu tam da burada başlar: İngilizce, sıfatın uzunluğuna göre iki farklı yol seçer. Kısa sıfatlarda sıfatın sonuna ek gelir (tall→taller), uzun sıfatlarda ise sıfatın önüne ayrı bir kelime gelir (expensive→more expensive). Yani Türkçedeki tek kural ("daha"), İngilizcede sıfatı fiziksel olarak değiştiren bir işleme dönüşür.
Kısa sıfat
Sona ek: -er / -est. tall → taller → the tallest
Uzun sıfat
Öne kelime: more / most. expensive → more expensive → the most expensive
Düzensiz
Ezberlenir: good → better → best, bad → worse → worst
Life is a constant comparison. When we say "this phone is cheaper than that one", "the hardest-working student in the class", "my brother is taller than me", we are always measuring two or more things against a scale. In English, this job of comparing is done by the comparative and superlative structures.
The comparative positions two things relative to each other: "A is more ... than B". The superlative marks a single extreme point within the whole of a group: "A is the most ... of all". In Turkish we do this very easily with the words "daha ..." (more) and "en ..." (most); the adjective never changes, we just put a word in front of it.
Comparative
Compares two things: A is taller than B. — "more ..."Superlative
A single extreme within a group: A is the tallest of all. — "the most ..."This is exactly where the difficulty of English begins: English chooses two different paths depending on the length of the adjective. Short adjectives take a suffix at the end (tall→taller), while long adjectives take a separate word in front (expensive→more expensive). So the single Turkish rule ("daha") becomes an operation that physically changes the adjective in English.
Short adjective
Suffix at the end: -er / -est. tall → taller → the tallest
Long adjective
Word in front: more / most. expensive → more expensive → the most expensive
Irregular
Memorised: good → better → best, bad → worse → worst
- Function: To compare two things (comparative) and to mark the most extreme member of a group (superlative).
- Why it exists: Expressing difference and degree is a basic need of language; "good", "better" and "best" are completely different pieces of information.
- Turkish equivalent: "daha büyük / en büyük" (bigger / biggest) — the logic is exactly the same, but English changes the form of the adjective.
- Why it's hard: Whether to choose -er/-est or more/most based on the length of the adjective, the spelling changes and the irregular forms all challenge the Turkish student.
- Karşılaştırmada iki şeyi kıyaslarız ve aralarına than koyarız: A is bigger than B.
- Kısa sıfat (1 hece + bazı 2 hece) → sona -er: old→older, happy→happier.
- Uzun sıfat (2+ hece çoğu) → öne more: careful→more careful, expensive→more expensive.
- Üstünlükte kısa sıfat → the ... -est: the oldest; uzun sıfat → the most ...: the most careful.
- Üstünlükte sıfatın önünde neredeyse her zaman the bulunur.
- Yazım kritik: harf ikizleme (big→bigger), y→i (happy→happier), sondaki -e düşer (nice→nicer).
- Düzensizler ezberlenir: good→better→best, bad→worse→worst, far→farther/further→farthest/furthest.
- Eşitlik için as ... as: as tall as; olumsuzu not as ... as = daha az.
- Zarfları da karşılaştırırız: fast→faster, carefully→more carefully.
- very karşılaştırma ile kullanılmaz; derece için much / far / a bit / a little kullanılır: much better.
- In a comparison we compare two things and put than between them: A is bigger than B.
- Short adjective (1 syllable + some 2-syllable ones) → -er at the end: old→older, happy→happier.
- Long adjective (most with 2+ syllables) → more in front: careful→more careful, expensive→more expensive.
- In the superlative, a short adjective → the ... -est: the oldest; a long adjective → the most ...: the most careful.
- In the superlative the adjective is almost always preceded by the.
- Spelling is critical: doubling the final consonant (big→bigger), y→i (happy→happier), a final -e is dropped (nice→nicer).
- Irregulars are memorised: good→better→best, bad→worse→worst, far→farther/further→farthest/furthest.
- For equality use as ... as: as tall as; the negative not as ... as = less.
- We also compare adverbs: fast→faster, carefully→more carefully.
- very is not used with the comparative; for degree use much / far / a bit / a little: much better.
Karşılaştırma (Comparative) — Olumlu
Formül (kısa sıfat): özne + be + sıfat-er + than + karşılaştırılan. Formül (uzun sıfat): özne + be + more + sıfat + than + karşılaştırılan. Sıfat sıradan bir fiil cümlesinde de aynı kalır: He works harder than me.
Karşılaştırma — Olumsuz
Olumsuzluk iki yolla verilir. (1) Fiili olumsuz yapıp not as ... as kullanmak: A is not as big as B = A, B kadar büyük değil (yani daha küçük). (2) less + sıfat + than: A is less expensive than B = A, B'den daha az pahalı. Günlük dilde not as ... as çok daha yaygındır; less daha resmî/yazılı durur.
Karşılaştırma — Soru
Soru, cümlenin fiiline göre normal soru kuralıyla kurulur; karşılaştırma yapısı olduğu gibi kalır: Is A + comparative + than B? ya da Which is bigger, A or B? kalıbı çok kullanılır.
Üstünlük (Superlative)
Formül (kısa): the + sıfat-est; formül (uzun): the most + sıfat. Grubu genellikle in (yer/grup) veya of (sayılabilir küme) ile veririz: the best student in the class, the tallest of the three.
| Yapı | Kısa sıfat | Uzun sıfat |
|---|---|---|
| Karşılaştırma | tall → taller than | careful → more careful than |
| Eşitlik | as tall as | as careful as |
| Üstünlük | the tallest | the most careful |
Comparative — Affirmative
Formula (short adjective): subject + be + adjective-er + than + the thing compared. Formula (long adjective): subject + be + more + adjective + than + the thing compared. The adjective stays the same in an ordinary verb sentence too: He works harder than me.
Comparative — Negative
The negative is expressed in two ways. (1) Making the verb negative and using not as ... as: A is not as big as B = A is not as big as B (i.e. smaller). (2) less + adjective + than: A is less expensive than B = A is less expensive than B. In everyday language not as ... as is far more common; less sounds more formal/written.
Comparative — Question
The question is formed by the normal question rule for the sentence's verb; the comparative structure stays as it is: Is A + comparative + than B? or the Which is bigger, A or B? pattern is very common.
Superlative
Formula (short): the + adjective-est; formula (long): the most + adjective. We usually give the group with in (a place/group) or of (a countable set): the best student in the class, the tallest of the three.
| Structure | Short adjective | Long adjective |
|---|---|---|
| Comparative | tall → taller than | careful → more careful than |
| Equality | as tall as | as careful as |
| Superlative | the tallest | the most careful |
Kısa sıfatlara -er / -est eklerken sıfatın son harflerine göre yazım değişir. Bu değişimler İngilizcede telaffuzu ve heceyi korumak içindir; ezberlenmesi şart olan dört ana kalıp vardır.
| Kural | Yalın | Comparative | Superlative |
|---|---|---|---|
| Genel: sona -er/-est | tall / cheap | taller / cheaper | the tallest / the cheapest |
| Sonu -e ise sadece -r/-st | nice / large | nicer / larger | the nicest / the largest |
| Kısa ünlü + tek ünsüz: ünsüz ikizlenir | big / hot / thin | bigger / hotter / thinner | the biggest / the hottest / the thinnest |
| Ünsüz + y: y → i | happy / easy / dry | happier / easier / drier | the happiest / the easiest / the driest |
| Ünlü + y: y korunur | gray / (play) | grayer | the grayest |
When adding -er / -est to short adjectives, the spelling changes according to the adjective's final letters. These changes exist to preserve pronunciation and the syllable in English; there are four main patterns you must memorise.
| Rule | Base | Comparative | Superlative |
|---|---|---|---|
| General: -er/-est at the end | tall / cheap | taller / cheaper | the tallest / the cheapest |
| If it ends in -e, only -r/-st | nice / large | nicer / larger | the nicest / the largest |
| Short vowel + single consonant: the consonant is doubled | big / hot / thin | bigger / hotter / thinner | the biggest / the hottest / the thinnest |
| Consonant + y: y → i | happy / easy / dry | happier / easier / drier | the happiest / the easiest / the driest |
| Vowel + y: y is kept | gray / (play) | grayer | the grayest |
1) İki şeyi doğrudan kıyaslamak (en yaygın)
2) Bir grubun en ucunu belirtmek
3) Eşitlik ve eşitsizlik (as ... as)
4) Zarfları karşılaştırmak
5) Değişim/gelişim anlatmak (getting + comparative)
1) Comparing two things directly (most common)
2) Marking the extreme of a group
3) Equality and inequality (as ... as)
4) Comparing adverbs
5) Describing change/development (getting + comparative)
Bu konuda "zaman ifadesi" yerine, cümlede karşılaştırma/üstünlük olduğunu haber veren sinyal kelimeler vardır. Bunları görünce doğru yapıyı seçmek kolaylaşır — ama bu sinyaller garanti değildir, bağlama bakmak gerekir.
| Sinyal | Genelde işaret eder | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| than | Comparative (iki şey) | cheaper than, more useful than |
| the ... in / of | Superlative (grup) | the best in the world, the tallest of all |
| as ... as | Eşitlik | as good as new |
| much / far / a bit / a little | Comparative'i derecelendirir | much better, a bit colder |
| ever (I've ever ...) | Superlative pekiştirir | the worst I've ever had |
| one of the | Superlative (çoğul isimle) | one of the biggest cities |
In this topic, instead of "time expressions", there are signal words that tell you a sentence contains a comparison/superlative. Seeing them makes choosing the right structure easier — but these signals are not a guarantee; you have to look at the context.
| Signal | Usually indicates | Example |
|---|---|---|
| than | Comparative (two things) | cheaper than, more useful than |
| the ... in / of | Superlative (a group) | the best in the world, the tallest of all |
| as ... as | Equality | as good as new |
| much / far / a bit / a little | Grades the comparative | much better, a bit colder |
| ever (I've ever ...) | Reinforces the superlative | the worst I've ever had |
| one of the | Superlative (with a plural noun) | one of the biggest cities |
Karşılaştırma yalnızca "daha büyük/küçük" demekten ibaret değildir; derece, bakış açısı, kesinlik ve nezaket hep bu yapıya sinmiştir. Aynı sıfatın önüne konan küçük bir kelime cümlenin tonunu tümüyle değiştirir.
Dereceyi ölçmek: much / far / a bit
Comparative'i güçlendirmek için much, far, a lot, way (çok daha), yumuşatmak için a bit, a little, slightly (biraz daha) kullanılır. very comparative ile asla gitmez: very better yanlıştır.
Comparison is not just about saying "bigger/smaller"; degree, point of view, precision and politeness are all woven into this structure. A small word placed in front of the same adjective completely changes the tone of the sentence.
Measuring degree: much / far / a bit
To strengthen the comparative, use much, far, a lot, way (much more), and to soften it, use a bit, a little, slightly (a bit more). very never goes with the comparative: very better is wrong.
Politeness and softening
Comparison is a polite way to avoid saying something is directly bad. Instead of "this is bad", saying "the other one is better" sounds more polite; not as ... as also softens criticism.
Point of view and precision
Softening the superlative with one of the makes the claim safer: saying "the biggest" is risky, while "one of the biggest" leaves room for debate. This is much preferred in academic and journalistic language.
- Türkçe "en" → İngilizce the -est ya da the most; başındaki the Türkçede yoktur, unutulur.
- Türkçe "-den" (Ali'den) → İngilizce than (than Ali); Türk öğrenci sık sık from demeye kayar.
- Türkçede sıfat değişmediği için öğrenci İngilizcede de "more big" demeye meyleder — çünkü Türkçesi "daha büyük".
Turkish never touches the adjective in a comparison: "büyük" (big) always stays "büyük", with "daha" (more) or "en" (most) placed next to it. The side being compared is marked with the -den/-dan suffix: "Ali'den uzun" (taller than Ali). In English, the adjective itself changes form (taller) and the compared side is linked with than.
- Turkish "daha" → English either -er (short) or more (long); the two never occur together.
- Turkish "en" → English the -est or the most; the the at the front does not exist in Turkish and gets forgotten.
- Turkish "-den" (Ali'den) → English than (than Ali); the Turkish student often drifts into saying from.
- Because the adjective doesn't change in Turkish, the student tends to say "more big" in English too — because the Turkish is "daha büyük".
| Yapı | Ne yapar | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| comparative (this topic) | İki şeyi kıyaslar | This is bigger than that. |
| so / such / too / enough | Derece + sonuç/yeterlilik | too small to wear · so / such / too / enough |
| adjective order | Birden çok sıfatı sıralar | a big old wooden table · Sıfat Sırası |
| as ... as | Eşitlik bildirir | as fast as a car |
En sık karışan ikili: comparative ile too / enough. "Bu araba daha pahalı" (comparative, iki şey kıyaslanır) ile "Bu araba çok pahalı / yeterince ucuz değil" (bir eşiğe göre yeterlilik) farklı şeylerdir. İkincisi için bkz. so / such / too / enough. Ayrıca üstünlükte birden çok sıfat varsa sıralama için bkz. Sıfat Sırası.
| Structure | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|
| comparative (this topic) | Compares two things | This is bigger than that. |
| so / such / too / enough | Degree + result/sufficiency | too small to wear · so / such / too / enough |
| adjective order | Orders multiple adjectives | a big old wooden table · Adjective Order |
| as ... as | Expresses equality | as fast as a car |
The most commonly confused pair: comparative and too / enough. "This car is more expensive" (comparative, two things compared) and "This car is too expensive / not cheap enough" (sufficiency against a threshold) are different things. For the latter see so / such / too / enough. Also, if there are multiple adjectives in the superlative, see Adjective Order for the ordering.
İki heceli bazı sıfatlar hem -er hem more ile kullanılabilir; ikisi de doğrudur. Özellikle -y, -er, -le, -ow ile biten iki heceliler -er'i sever: happy→happier, clever→cleverer, simple→simpler, narrow→narrower. Diğer birçok iki heceli sıfat ise (modern, careful, useful, honest) neredeyse her zaman more alır.
Ayrıca old aile büyüklüğü sırasında elder/eldest alır (my elder brother), ama 'than' ile kullanılmaz: older than doğrudur.
Some two-syllable adjectives can be used with both -er and more; both are correct. In particular, two-syllable adjectives ending in -y, -er, -le, -ow like -er: happy→happier, clever→cleverer, simple→simpler, narrow→narrower. Many other two-syllable adjectives (modern, careful, useful, honest) almost always take more.
Some adjectives have an absolute meaning; logically they cannot be compared: perfect, unique, impossible, dead, full, empty. Something is either unique or it isn't. But in everyday language uses like more perfect are heard for emphasis; they are avoided in formal writing.
far has two comparative/superlative forms: for distance usually farther/farthest, and for the figurative "additional, further along" further/furthest. In modern English further has become common for both. Also, old takes elder/eldest in the order of family age (my elder brother), but is not used with 'than': older than is correct.
Akademik yazıda karşılaştırma, veri ve bulguları tartmanın temel aracıdır. Ancak akademik ton abartıdan ve mutlak iddialardan kaçınır: "the best" yerine one of the most significant, çıplak "much bigger" yerine sayıya bağlı considerably / significantly larger tercih edilir. Ayrıca karşılaştırma tarafının açık olması gerekir: neyle kıyaslandığı belirtilmelidir.
- 'less productive than' = comparative olumsuz, akademik olumsuzlama.
- 'slightly more focused', 'considerably more satisfied' = derecelendirilmiş comparative.
- 'more complex than these figures imply' = kıyas tarafı bir cümle.
- 'harder' = hard sıfatının comparative'i.
- 'The most balanced arrangement' = üstünlük, iddia yumuşatılmış.
- 'the best of both worlds' = üstünlük deyimi.
- 'universally superior' = 'superior' zaten karşılaştırmalı, than değil to alır.
In academic writing, comparison is the basic tool for weighing data and findings. However, the academic tone avoids exaggeration and absolute claims: instead of "the best", one of the most significant; instead of a bare "much bigger", a number-based considerably / significantly larger is preferred. Also, the compared side must be explicit: what it is compared to should be stated.
- 'less productive than' = a negative comparative, an academic negation.
- 'slightly more focused', 'considerably more satisfied' = graded comparatives.
- 'more complex than these figures imply' = the compared side is a clause.
- 'harder' = the comparative of the adjective hard.
- 'The most balanced arrangement' = a superlative, with the claim softened.
- 'the best of both worlds' = a superlative idiom.
- 'universally superior' = 'superior' is already comparative and takes 'to', not 'than'.
- 'much harder than she had expected' = derecelendirilmiş comparative + than + cümle.
- 'the most powerful / the sharpest / the fastest' = art arda üstünlükler.
- 'by far the most expensive' = 'by far' üstünlüğü pekiştirir.
- 'wasn't as fast as' = eşitliğin olumsuzu = daha yavaş anlamı.
- 'the battery lasted longer' = zarf/sıfat comparative (long→longer).
- 'The more she compared them, the more confused she got' = the+comparative, the+comparative kalıbı.
- 'far more practical' = 'far' ile güçlendirilmiş comparative.
- 'better value than anything else' = comparative + than anything else kalıbı.
- 'sharper in daylight than she had expected' = yazım/comparative (sharp→sharper) + than + cümle.
- 'the smartest choice isn't the biggest, the newest, or the most expensive' = üstünlük zinciriyle karşıtlık.
- 'works better for me than any of the fancier ones' = comparative + than any of the ... kalıbı.
- 'much harder than she had expected' = a graded comparative + than + a clause.
- 'the most powerful / the sharpest / the fastest' = consecutive superlatives.
- 'by far the most expensive' = 'by far' reinforces the superlative.
- 'wasn't as fast as' = the negative of equality = a slower meaning.
- 'the battery lasted longer' = an adverb/adjective comparative (long→longer).
- 'The more she compared them, the more confused she got' = the+comparative, the+comparative pattern.
- 'far more practical' = a comparative strengthened with 'far'.
- 'better value than anything else' = the comparative + than anything else pattern.
- 'sharper in daylight than she had expected' = spelling/comparative (sharp→sharper) + than + a clause.
- 'the smartest choice isn't the biggest, the newest, or the most expensive' = a contrast with a chain of superlatives.
- 'works better for me than any of the fancier ones' = the comparative + than any of the ... pattern.

Aşağıdaki sorular kuralı değil, anlamı yoklar. Cümlenin ne söylediğini düşün, sonra cevabı aç.
- "My phone isn't as fast as yours." — Kimin telefonu daha hızlı?Seninki daha hızlı. 'not as fast as yours' = benimki seninki kadar hızlı değil, yani seninki üstün.
- "It's one of the best films of the year." — En iyi film olduğunu mu söylüyor?Hayır. 'one of the best' = en iyilerden biri; kesin olarak 'the best' demekten kaçınır, iddiayı yumuşatır.
- "This is much better." — Fark küçük mü büyük mü?Büyük. 'much' comparative'i güçlendirir; küçük fark için 'a bit better' denirdi.
- "The more, the merrier." — Ne anlatır?Ne kadar çok (kişi) olursa o kadar keyifli; the+comparative, the+comparative orantı kalıbı, davet için kullanılır.
- "She's the eldest." vs "She's older than me." — Hangisi 'than' alabilir?'older than me' alır. 'eldest' üstünlüktür ve isimden önce/tek başına kullanılır, 'than' almaz.
The questions below test not the rule but meaning. Think about what the sentence says, then reveal the answer.
- "My phone isn't as fast as yours." — Whose phone is faster?Yours is faster. 'not as fast as yours' = mine is not as fast as yours, so yours is superior.
- "It's one of the best films of the year." — Does it say it is the best film? No. 'one of the best' = one of the best ones; it avoids definitely saying 'the best' and softens the claim.
- "This is much better." — Is the difference small or big?Big. 'much' strengthens the comparative; for a small difference you'd say 'a bit better'.
- "The more, the merrier." — What does it express? The more (people) there are, the more fun it is; the+comparative, the+comparative proportion pattern, used for invitations.
- "She's the eldest." vs "She's older than me." — Which one can take 'than'?'older than me' takes it. 'eldest' is a superlative and is used before a noun / on its own, not with 'than'.

Görev: Yaşadığın şehir ile hayalindeki şehri karşılaştıran 6–8 cümlelik kısa bir paragraf yaz. En az üç comparative (biri düzensiz), en az iki superlative ve en az bir as ... as kullan. En az bir cümlede much / far / a bit ile dereceyi belirt.
- Rehber soru 1: İki şehir hangi özelliklerde farklı? (büyüklük, ulaşım, fiyat, hava)
- Rehber soru 2: Hangi şehir bir konuda 'en'? (the best / the most ...)
- Rehber soru 3: Hangi konuda ikisi eşit? (as ... as)

- Model cevapI live in Bursa, but my dream city is Barcelona. Barcelona is much bigger than Bursa, and its public transport is far more modern. Life there is more expensive than here, though — probably one of the most expensive cities in the region. The weather is almost as warm as Bursa's, which I love. For me, Barcelona has the best beaches and the most exciting nightlife I can imagine. Still, Bursa is quieter and greener, and honestly the food is even better than in most big cities.
Task: Write a short paragraph of 6–8 sentences comparing the city you live in with your dream city. Use at least three comparatives (one of them irregular), at least two superlatives, and at least one as ... as. In at least one sentence, indicate degree with much / far / a bit.
- Guiding question 1: In which features do the two cities differ? (size, transport, price, weather)
- Guiding question 2: In which respect is one city the 'most'? (the best / the most ...)
- Guiding question 3: In which respect are the two equal? (as ... as)
- Check: Did you make a double comparison (more -er)? Did you use 'than' or 'from'? Is there a 'the' in the superlative?

For me, Barcelona has the best beaches and the most exciting nightlife I can imagine. Still, Bursa is quieter and greener, and honestly the food is even better than in most big cities.
Kavram kontrol soruları: "taller than" kaç şeyi kıyaslıyor? (2). "the tallest" kaç şey içinde? (grup/hepsi). "very better" neden olmaz? (very comparative'i derecelendiremez). Bu üç soru en sık üç hatayı da kapatır.
Etkinlik önerisi: Sınıf içi "kıyas turnuvası" — öğrenciler ikili gruplarda nesneleri/ünlüleri karşılaştırır (comparative), sonra tüm sınıf tek bir üstünlük cümlesiyle kazananı ilan eder. Böylece comparative→superlative geçişi doğal bir bağlamda pekişir. İkinci tur: sadece düzensiz sıfatlarla (good/bad/far) oynatarak ezberi otomatikleştir.
Concept-check questions: how many things does "taller than" compare? (2). "the tallest" is among how many things? (a group/all of them). Why is "very better" not allowed? (very cannot grade a comparative). These three questions cover the three most common mistakes.
Activity suggestion: an in-class "comparison tournament" — students compare objects/celebrities in pairs (comparative), then the whole class announces the winner with a single superlative sentence. This way the comparative→superlative transition is reinforced in a natural context. Second round: play only with irregular adjectives (good/bad/far) to automate the memorisation.
- Comparative = iki şey ("daha"): kısa → -er + than, uzun → more + ... + than.
- Superlative = grubun ucu ("en"): kısa → the -est, uzun → the most; the neredeyse zorunlu.
- than karşılaştırmayı bağlar; Türkçe "-den" için from DEĞİL.
- Yazım: harf ikizleme (big→bigger), y→i (happy→happier), -e düşer (nice→nicer).
- Düzensizler: good→better→best, bad→worse→worst, far→farther/further.
- Eşitlik as ... as; olumsuzu not as ... as = daha az.
- Dereceyi much/far/a bit verir; very comparative ile KULLANILMAZ.
- İki büyük hata: çifte karşılaştırma (more taller) ve çifte üstünlük (most tallest) — asla ikisi bir arada.
- İddiayı yumuşatmak için one of the + üstünlük + çoğul.
- Comparative = two things ("more"): short → -er + than, long → more + ... + than.
- Superlative = the extreme of a group ("the most"): short → the -est, long → the most; the is almost obligatory.
- than links the comparison; for the Turkish "-den" it is NOT from.
- Spelling: doubling the consonant (big→bigger), y→i (happy→happier), -e is dropped (nice→nicer).
- Irregulars: good→better→best, bad→worse→worst, far→farther/further.
- Equality as ... as; its negative not as ... as = less.
- Degree is given by much/far/a bit; very is NOT used with the comparative.
- Two big mistakes: double comparison (more taller) and double superlative (most tallest) — never both together.
- To soften a claim, use one of the + superlative + plural.
