Fen Bilimleri
Mühendislik, matematik, fizik, kimya, biyoloji, mimarlık. Metinler doğa bilimleri ve mühendislik terminolojisinden beslenir.
Sağlık Bilimleri
Tıp, diş hekimliği, eczacılık, hemşirelik, veterinerlik. Anatomi, klinik süreçler ve tıbbi araştırma dili ağırlıktadır.
Sosyal Bilimler
Hukuk, iktisat, edebiyat, tarih, sosyoloji, eğitim, ilahiyat.

Karar Rehberi
Seçim yaparken şu adımları izlemek, doğru kararı vermenizi kolaylaştırır:
- Önce ilanı okuyun. Başvuracağınız program veya kadro yalnızca belirli bir sınavı kabul ediyorsa karar zaten verilmiş demektir. Her şeyden önce bunu netleştirin.
In many developing economies, the informal sector — unregistered vendors, casual labourers, and small workshops — has proved remarkably durable. Earlier development theories assumed it would shrink as economies modernised, yet it persists, absorbing labour that the formal sector cannot. Its ambivalence lies here: it provides livelihoods, but its workers usually lack legal protection and social security.
Soru. According to the passage, the informal sector is best described as ----.
A) a temporary stage that disappears once economies modernise
B) a phenomenon that both absorbs labour and leaves workers unprotected
C) a sector fully regulated by local authorities
D) a marginal segment that employs very few workers
E) a system that earlier theories accurately predicted would grow
Doğru cevap: B. Parçanın son cümlesi ikircikliği (ambivalence) tanımlar: enformel sektör hem işgücünü emer (absorbing labour, provides livelihoods) hem de çalışanları korumasız bırakır (lack legal protection and social security). B bu iki yönü birlikte verir.
Çeldiriciler neden yanlış:
- A) temporary ... disappears: Parça sektörün remarkably durable (kalıcı) olduğunu söyler; zıt.
- C) fully regulated: "lack legal protection" ifadesiyle çelişir.
- D) very few workers: "absorbing labour" ifadesine ters; sektör önemli bir işgücü emer.
- E) theories ... predicted would grow: Teoriler küçüleceğini varsaymıştı, büyüyeceğini değil; metni tersine çevirir.
| Neden puan alır | Neden puan kaybeder |
| Cevabı metindeki çapa cümleye (son cümledeki ikircik) dayandırır. | Alan terimlerine (informal sector) takılıp genel mantığı kaçırır. |
| YÖKDİL'i "bambaşka bir sınav" sanıp okuma stratejisini yeniden kurmaya çalışır. |
Yaygın Yanlış Anlamalar
- "YÖKDİL'i YÖK yapıyor."
The YDS and YÖKDİL are two exams taken to clear the "foreign language barrier," one of the most critical thresholds of academic and professional careers in Turkey. Both are administered by the same institution, have a similar structure, and can substitute for each other in most official procedures. Despite this, most candidates do not fully know which one they should prepare for, what the real difference between them is, or which one best fits their situation. In this article we compare the two exams in detail in terms of content, format, validity and strategy; we correct common misconceptions and offer a clear decision guide.
Summary (TL;DR)
- The YDS and YÖKDİL are two separate exams: the YDS measures general academic language, while YÖKDİL predominantly measures field (Science/Health/Social) terminology.
- The question types and format are largely shared; the main difference is the subject area of the reading texts.
- Equivalence and score use are similar in many official processes; even so, confirmation according to the target institution is essential.
- The shared skills (vocabulary, grammar, reading) apply to both; for YÖKDİL, field vocabulary is added.
What Are the YDS and YÖKDİL?
YDS (Foreign Language Proficiency Exam) is a central foreign language exam used in Turkey for academic promotion, faculty membership, associate professorship, overseas assignments, the public personnel language allowance and many official processes. The exam is prepared and administered by ÖSYM (Assessment, Selection and Placement Centre). It is held in regular periods during the year, in the spring and autumn, and can be offered in many languages, English first and foremost.
YÖKDİL (Higher Education Institutions Foreign Language Exam), on the other hand, is a field-based foreign language exam developed especially for the needs of academic staff at higher education institutions and candidates aiming for an academic career. Although its name is often confused with YÖK, YÖKDİL too is prepared and administered by ÖSYM. In other words, the owner and administrator of both exams is the same institution; the quality of assessment, security standards and scoring logic are carried out under a shared framework.
This common ground is important: a candidate who knows the YDS is largely not unfamiliar with the question logic of YÖKDİL either. Both exams are products of the same assessment culture; they test basic language skills, reading comprehension and grammar command with similar question types. The differences arise not in format but mainly in the subject universe of the content.
The Main Difference: General Academic Language or Field Terminology?
The most decisive difference between the two exams is the focus of the texts and vocabulary used. The YDS is a general academic language exam: its texts come from a broad and mixed spectrum ranging from everyday life to science-and-culture writing, from general academic articles to various disciplines. The candidate demonstrates a general English proficiency without being tied to a particular field of expertise.
YÖKDİL, on the other hand, is administered in three separate fields and ensures that each candidate sits the session closest to their own discipline:
- YÖKDİL Science — for fields such as engineering, basic sciences, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and architecture; the texts and terms draw on the world of engineering and the natural sciences.
- YÖKDİL Health — for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, veterinary medicine and related health disciplines; a terminology close to anatomy, clinical processes and medical research language is dominant.
- YÖKDİL Social Sciences — for fields such as law, economics, literature, history, sociology, education, theology and the like; the texts come from the conceptual world of the humanities and social sciences.
Science
Engineering, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, architecture. Texts draw on natural-science and engineering terminology.
Health
Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, veterinary medicine. Anatomy, clinical processes and medical research language are dominant.
Social Sciences
Law, economics, literature, history, sociology, education, theology. Texts come from the conceptual world of the humanities and social sciences.
This distinction is YÖKDİL's strongest aspect. A candidate who commands the terminology of their own field decodes the context faster, makes more accurate word guesses and gains time on reading questions when they encounter a text from that field. The YDS, by contrast, offers a "universal" language measurement because it gives no field any privilege; it shows how well a candidate can use English without depending on a specific specialist vocabulary.
In short: the YDS measures "general academic English"; YÖKDİL measures over "the academic English of your field." The question types are almost the same; what changes is the subject universe the texts and words come from.
Validity and Equivalence: Do They Substitute for Each Other?
The question that most worries candidates is this: "if I take YÖKDİL, will it be useful where the YDS is required?" As a general rule, in most academic procedures the YDS and YÖKDİL are considered equivalent. In the great majority of processes such as associate professorship applications, academic promotion and applications to graduate programmes, scores from both exams are counted as equal. For this reason, for a candidate aiming for an academic career the worry of "which one will be accepted if I take it" is largely unfounded.
Even so, there is a critical warning here: equivalence depends on the announcement of the institution and process you apply to. In some special cases, in staff announcements or in the regulations of certain institutions, only the YDS or only a specific exam type may be required. There may be situations, especially in some public institution appointments, external assignments or internationally-oriented processes, where the YDS is more widely accepted. That is why the golden rule is clear: before you start preparing, always read the current announcement of the programme or institution you will apply to and confirm which exam is accepted.
The validity period of scores is as important as equivalence. Both exams have a certain validity period and framework of use; for these details, in our where the YDS is valid article we examined in detail which exam is accepted in which processes.
AttentionEquivalence depends on the announcement of the institution you apply to. In some positions and processes only the YDS or a single exam type may be required — read the current announcement before you start preparing and confirm which one is accepted.
Number of Questions, Duration and Format
In terms of format, the two exams are quite close, and this similarity makes the preparation process easier. Both exams consist of 80 questions and are administered in a multiple-choice format. The exam duration is also parallel; candidates are given a similar length of time to answer the 80 questions. This means that in both the YDS and YÖKDİL, time management is one of the decisive elements of success.
In both exams you typically encounter the following question types:
- Vocabulary questions — choosing the correct word that meaningfully completes the sentence.
- Grammar questions — fill-in-the-blank that tests knowledge of conjunctions, prepositions, tense and structure.
- Cloze test — filling consecutive blanks placed within a paragraph according to context.
- Sentence completion and translation questions — Turkish-to-English and English-to-Turkish meaning transfer.
- Reading passages — groups of multiple questions based on a text.
- Types requiring analysis, such as paragraph completion, closest-in-meaning sentence and dialogue completion.
Thanks to this shared structure, the exam technique you develop for the YDS can be transferred directly to YÖKDİL. Candidates curious about the question logic and general study method can start with our what is the YDS article, where we explain the basic framework; the question-type analyses there are largely valid for both exams.

Which One Suits Whom?
The right exam choice varies according to the candidate's field and goal. When deciding, it is helpful to look at these profiles:
- Candidates with a distinct academic field: a candidate who has specialised in one of the health, science or social sciences fields and commands that field's terminology can gain an advantage in the relevant YÖKDİL session. Because texts from their own field feel familiar, reading questions are solved more comfortably.
- Those whose field does not fully overlap with the exam focuses, or who work across disciplines: if a candidate's field terminology is not strong, or their general English is stronger, the general academic structure of the YDS may be a safer choice.
- Those who want to use the score outside academia too: in processes such as the public language allowance, some appointments or external duties, the YDS is more widely recognised, so for candidates who want to keep their area of use broad, the YDS may stand out.
Important: the statement "YÖKDİL is easier according to your field" is a tendency, not a guarantee. The terminology advantage only works if your basic language skills are solid. A weak grammar and reading foundation cannot be compensated for in any type of exam.
Is Score Use the Same?
In terms of scoring logic, the two exams are largely the same. In both you obtain a score out of 100, and this score is evaluated against the threshold sought by the process you apply to. In associate professorship, academic promotion or graduate applications, a certain lower limit (for example, a requirement to be above a certain score) is generally sought, and these thresholds are in most cases applied in the same way for the YDS and YÖKDİL.
For those who want a more detailed look at how the score is calculated, the correct-wrong relationship and the score ranges, our YDS scoring article is a good starting point; the scoring logic there is largely valid for YÖKDİL too, because both exams are evaluated under the same assessment framework. Even so, concrete threshold values are always determined according to the announcement of the institution applied to; focus not on a general score table but on the figure your own process requires.

Which Should You Choose? A Decision Guide
Following these steps when making your choice makes it easier to reach the right decision:
- Read the announcement first. If the programme or position you will apply to accepts only a specific exam, the decision is already made. Above all, clarify this.
- Assess your field terminology. If you command the English terms of your own discipline and your field clearly overlaps with one of the YÖKDİL sessions, the relevant field of YÖKDİL can gain you time and accuracy.
- Measure your general English level. If your terminology advantage is weak, or you are more comfortable with broad-topic texts, the general structure of the YDS may be safer.
- Think about your purpose of use. Will you use the score only for academic promotion, or for broader institutional processes too? The wider the area of use, the more the YDS's widespread recognition becomes an advantage.
- Decide by doing practice exams. Do sample practice exams from both. You are likely to perform in the real exam in the direction of whichever one you find yourself more comfortable and accurate in.
Remember: because both exams measure the same basic language skill, the real decisive factor is not which exam you choose but how systematically you prepare. Vocabulary, command of grammar and reading speed form the core of success in both exams.
"The real decisive factor is not which exam you choose but how systematically you prepare — vocabulary, grammar and reading are the core of both.
Worked example: a paragraph (reading) question
The real difference between the two exams is the subject area of the reading passages; the question logic is the same. The short YÖKDİL Social-style passage below shows how the correct answer in reading questions is grounded in the text.
Question.
Correct answer: B. The last sentence of the passage defines its ambivalence (ambivalence): the informal sector both absorbs labour (absorbing labour, provides livelihoods) and leaves workers unprotected (lack legal protection and social security). B gives these two aspects together.
Why the distractors are wrong:
- A) temporary ... disappears: the passage says the sector is remarkably durable; the opposite.
- C) fully regulated: contradicts the phrase "lack legal protection."
- D) very few workers: the opposite of "absorbing labour"; the sector absorbs a significant workforce.
- E) theories ... predicted would grow: the theories had assumed it would shrink, not grow; it reverses the text.
| Why it earns points | Why it loses points |
| Grounds the answer in the anchor sentence in the text (the ambivalence in the last sentence). | Gets stuck on the field terms (informal sector) and misses the general logic. |
| Confirms or refutes each option with a phrase from the text. | Picks the "seemingly logical" option based on prior knowledge without looking at the text. |
| Uses the same reading reflex in the YDS and YÖKDİL; only adapts the vocabulary area. | Thinks YÖKDİL is "a completely different exam" and tries to rebuild the reading strategy. |
Common Misconceptions
- "YÖKDİL is made by YÖK." Wrong. YÖKDİL, just like the YDS, is prepared and administered by ÖSYM. The "YÖK" in the name points to the exam's higher-education focus, not to its administrator.
- "YÖKDİL is the easy version of the YDS." Wrong. YÖKDİL is not an easier exam; it only focuses the texts on a specific field. If you are strong in your own field it gives you an advantage, but the exam's grammar and reading difficulty are at the same level as the YDS.
- "A YÖKDİL score is not accepted anywhere." Wrong. In most academic procedures YÖKDİL is considered equivalent to the YDS. Its validity may vary by process; that is why you need to look at the announcement.
- "The formats of the two exams are completely different, I need to study for each separately." Wrong. Both are 80-question exams made up of similar question types. Most of the preparation you do for one exam directly benefits the other.
- "It is clear from the start which one I will get the highest score in." Wrong. This depends entirely on your language profile. The soundest way to decide is to do practice exams from both and compare your performance.
In conclusion, the YDS and YÖKDİL are two exams produced by the same institution, similar in structure and equal to each other in most processes. The real difference between them is not "ease" but the focus of the content: the YDS measures general academic English, while YÖKDİL measures academic English in the language of your field. The right choice comes from reading the announcement you will apply to, honestly assessing your command of your field, and deciding by doing practice exams. Whichever you choose, regular and planned preparation is the most reliable way to reach the score you target in both exams.
