Örnek mantık: "The new policy was designed to ... poverty in rural areas." cümlesinde boşluğa "alleviate" (hafifletmek) gelir; "postpone" ya da "celebrate" dilbilgisel olarak sığsa da anlam bütünlüğünü bozar. İpucu çoğu zaman "poverty" gibi anahtar bir kelimenin çağrıştırdığı olumlu/olumsuz tondur.
Taktik: Önce boşluğun etrafındaki eş dizimlere (collocation) bakın: "make a decision", "pose a threat", "meet the requirements" gibi kalıplar tek doğru şıkkı zaten belirler. Kelime çalışırken tek tek sözcük değil, sözcüğün birlikte kullanıldığı kalıpları ezberleyin.
2. Dilbilgisi Soruları (Edat, Bağlaç, Zaman-Kip)
Dilbilgisi soruları YDS'de üç ana damardan gelir ve her birinin ayrı bir çözüm refleksi vardır.
Edat (Preposition) Soruları
Bir fiil, sıfat veya isimden sonra hangi edatın geldiğini sorar: "depend on", "responsible for", "an increase in". Bu sorular tamamen kalıp bilgisidir; mantık yürüterek değil, ezberle çözülür. Edat + isim öbeklerini (in accordance with, on behalf of) liste halinde çalışmak en verimli yöntemdir.
Bağlaç Soruları
İki cümle arasındaki anlam ilişkisini kuran doğru bağlacı sorar. Burada anahtar, iki yargı arasındaki ilişkinin türünü okumaktır: zıtlık mı (although, whereas), neden-sonuç mu (because, therefore), koşul mu (unless, provided that)? Cümlenin iki yarısı aynı yönde mi yoksa zıt yönde mi ilerliyor, önce bunu belirleyin; şıkların yarısı anında elenir.
Zaman ve Kip Soruları
Cümledeki zaman zarflarına (since, by the time, next year, for two years) bakarak doğru zamanı seçmenizi ister. "since 2010" görünce Present Perfect, "by the time she arrives" görünce gelecek zaman refleksi gelişmelidir.
Örnek mantık: Bir boşlukta "however" mı "therefore" mı gireceğine karar verirken sadece o cümleye değil, önceki cümlenin verdiği yöne bakmanız gerekir.
Örnek mantık: "Although the experiment was repeated several times, ..." ile başlayan bir cümlede devamının bir zıtlık taşıması gerekir: "the results remained inconsistent." "Although" gördüğünüz an beyniniz "beklenenin tersi geliyor" moduna geçmelidir.
Doğru şık, cümlenin niceleyicilerini (all, some, most), kip anlamını ve olumsuzluğunu eksiksiz koruyan şıktır.
Örnek mantık: "According to the passage, the main reason for..." diye başlayan bir soruda cevap, metinde açıkça yazan bir gerekçedir; sizden yorum değil, metni doğru eşleştirmeniz istenir. Çıkarım sorularında ise ("It can be inferred that...") cevap metinde birebir yazmaz ama metnin söylediğinden mantıken çıkar.
Örnek mantık: "Unless investment increases, unemployment will rise." cümlesinin en yakın anlamı "If investment does not increase, unemployment will rise." şeklindedir. Doğru şık, orijinaldeki koşul, olumsuzluk ve sonuç ilişkisini birebir korur.
Taktik: Orijinal cümlenin üç iskeletini not edin: kim, ne yaptı, hangi koşulda/ilişkiyle.
Örnek mantık: Boşluktan hemen sonra gelen replik "Yes, but I still think it's too expensive." ise, boşluğa bir öneri ya da savunma gelmiş olmalıdır. Boşluğun bir soruya mı cevap, bir öneriye mi karşılık olduğunu boşluğun öncesi ve sonrasına bakarak anlarsınız.
Taktik: Boşluktan sonraki cümleyi asla atlamayın. Çoğu diyalog sorusunda cevabın anahtarı, boşluğun ardından gelen tepkidedir. "So", "but", "actually" gibi tepki sözcükleri boşlukta ne söylenmiş olması gerektiğini ele verir.
Taktik: Boşluğun bir önceki ve bir sonraki cümlesindeki bağlayıcı ipuçlarını (this, these, such, however, as a result) izleyin. Doğru cümle, sonraki cümledeki "this problem" gibi bir göndermeyle uyumlu olmalıdır. Zamir ve gönderme uyumu, dört şıktan üçünü hızla eler.
Soru. Even though critics warned that the reform could backfire, the government proceeded with it unchanged.
A) The government modified the reform in response to critics' warnings that it might backfire.
B) The government went ahead with the reform without changes, ignoring critics' warnings that it might backfire.
C) Critics eventually persuaded the government that the reform would backfire, so it was withdrawn.
D) The government proceeded with the reform only after critics confirmed it would not backfire.
E) The reform backfired because the government refused to listen to critics' warnings.
Doğru cevap: B. Özgün cümlenin üç unsuru tam korunur: (1) ödün/zıtlık — even though ... warned = ignoring ... warnings; (2) değişmeden ilerleme — proceeded unchanged = went ahead without changes; (3) uyarının içeriği bir olasılıktır — could/might backfire. B hiçbir yeni bilgi eklemez.
Çeldiriciler neden yanlış:
- A) modified: "Değiştirdi" der; oysa özgün cümle unchanged (değiştirmeden) diyor. Doğrudan zıt.
- C) withdrawn: Reformun geri çekildiğini söyler; özgün cümlede hükümet ilerlemiştir. Sonuç ters.
- D) only after ... would not backfire: Koşulu değiştirir; hükümetin "geri tepmeyeceği teyit edilince" ilerlediğini uydurur.
- E) The reform backfired: Reformun gerçekten geri teptiğini ekler; oysa özgün cümle yalnızca uyarıya rağmen ilerlendiğini söyler, sonucu belirtmez.
| Neden puan alır | Neden puan kaybeder |
| Özgün cümledeki modal olasılığı (could/might) kesinliğe çevirmeden korur. | Aynı kelimeleri gördüğü ilk seçeneği (kelime örtüşmesi) doğru sanır. |
| Zıtlık ve "değişmeden ilerleme" unsurlarını tek tek eşleştirir. | Cümlede olmayan bir sonucu (E: geri tepti) ekleyen seçeneği eler-emez. |
| Anlamı tersine çeviren (A, C) seçenekleri hızla ayıklar. | Yalnızca cümlenin bir kısmına bakıp bütünlüğü kontrol etmez. |
Success on the YDS depends less on "knowing English well" and more on knowing the question logic of the exam. All 80 questions fit into certain patterns; if you know what to look for in each question type, you will get a much higher number of correct answers with the same knowledge. In this article we take up one by one all the question types you encounter on the YDS, giving for each both the solution logic and the tactics that genuinely work in the exam.
The YDS (Foreign Language Proficiency Exam) consists of a total of 80 questions and lasts 180 minutes. That means you have on average a little over 2 minutes per question; but this time is not distributed equally across the question types. Finishing the vocabulary and grammar questions quickly and transferring the time to the reading-weighted sections is the hidden key to a high score. For a general framework of what the exam is, you can also take a look at our what is the YDS article.
"Success on the YDS depends less on "knowing English well" and more on knowing the question logic of the exam; a candidate who knows what is being looked at in each question type gets a higher number of correct answers with the same knowledge.
Summary (TL;DR)
- The YDS has 80 questions and every question type is a pattern; knowing what is being tested in each question brings a higher number of correct answers with the same knowledge.
- Question types: vocabulary, grammar, cloze test, sentence completion, translation (two directions), paragraph (reading), restatement, dialogue completion, paragraph completion, and the sentence that disrupts coherence.
- Each type requires a different reflex: meaning in vocabulary, structure in grammar, preservation of meaning in restatement, the anchor sentence in reading.
- Distributing the 180 minutes across the types brings more correct answers than knowledge of individual questions.
1. Vocabulary Questions (The Right Word)
In these questions you are asked to place the most contextually appropriate word into the blank in a sentence. The options are usually of the same part of speech (all verbs, all adjectives), which means all four "fit" grammatically and the difference lies only in meaning. For this reason, the essence of the solution is to capture the meaning that arises from the sentence as a whole.
Example logic: In the sentence "The new policy was designed to ... poverty in rural areas," the blank takes "alleviate"; "postpone" or "celebrate," though they may fit grammatically, break the coherence of meaning. The clue is often the positive/negative tone evoked by a key word such as "poverty."
Tactic: First look at the collocations around the blank: patterns like "make a decision," "pose a threat," "meet the requirements" already determine the single correct option. When studying vocabulary, memorize not single words but the patterns in which a word is used together with others.
2. Grammar Questions (Prepositions, Conjunctions, Tense-Mood)
Grammar questions come on the YDS from three main veins, and each has its own solving reflex.
Preposition Questions
These ask which preposition follows a verb, adjective, or noun: "depend on", "responsible for", "an increase in". These questions are entirely a matter of pattern knowledge; they are solved not by reasoning but by memorization. Studying preposition + noun phrases (in accordance with, on behalf of) as a list is the most efficient method.
Conjunction Questions
These ask for the correct conjunction that establishes the relationship of meaning between two clauses. Here the key is to read the type of relationship between the two statements: is it contrast (although, whereas), cause and effect (because, therefore), or condition (unless, provided that)? First determine whether the two halves of the sentence move in the same direction or in opposite directions; half of the options are eliminated at once.
Tense and Mood Questions
These ask you to choose the correct tense by looking at the time adverbs in the sentence (since, by the time, next year, for two years). On seeing "since 2010" the Present Perfect reflex, and on seeing "by the time she arrives" the future-tense reflex, should develop. In such questions, marking the time-determining clue word and reading it first considerably shortens the time. If you want to deepen this topic, our YDS grammar guide offers a comprehensive resource.
3. Cloze Test (Gap-Filling in a Paragraph)
The cloze test is a mixed section in which 5 consecutive blanks within a paragraph are filled. In the same paragraph, a vocabulary, a preposition, a conjunction, and a tense question can all appear together. The difference here is that you evaluate the blanks not in isolation but within the flow of the paragraph.
Example logic: When deciding whether "however" or "therefore" goes into a blank, you must look not only at that sentence but at the direction given by the previous sentence. If the text supports an idea, "moreover" comes; if it contradicts it, "nevertheless" comes.
Tactic: Before solving the cloze test, read the whole paragraph once from start to finish. After grasping the topic and tone, return to the blanks; trying to solve the blanks as if they were isolated sentences is the most common mistake.
4. Sentence Completion
In this type, half a sentence is given and one of the options completes it in terms of meaning and grammar. Usually a subordinate clause (although..., because..., when...) is given; you find the main clause, or vice versa.
Example logic: A sentence beginning with "Although the experiment was repeated several times, ..." must be continued by a contrast: "the results remained inconsistent." The moment you see "Although," your brain should switch into "the opposite of what is expected is coming" mode.
Tactic: First detect the conjunction or the tense agreement in the given part. By looking at the tense agreement and logical direction of the options, you can eliminate the wrong ones before even reading all of them. Subject-verb singularity/plurality is also a quick elimination filter.
5. Translation Questions (English↔Turkish)
On the YDS, translation is two-directional: some questions ask for the closest Turkish equivalent of an English sentence, others for the closest English equivalent of a Turkish sentence. The word to pay attention to is "closest"; the correct option is not the perfect one but the one that conveys the meaning most completely and with the least deviation.
Example logic: The difference between the options is usually in small but decisive details: one option may have turned the "possibility" (may, could) in the sentence into "certainty," another may have dropped a negation. The correct option is the one that fully preserves the sentence's quantifiers (all, some, most), modal meaning, and negation.
Tactic: Instead of reading the options from start to finish, pick out 2–3 "risky" elements in the original sentence (a negation, a modal, a quantifier) and scan the options only for these elements. Every option that breaks one of these elements is eliminated. This way you do not have to fully translate all four long sentences.
6. Paragraph Questions (Reading Comprehension)
Reading paragraphs, with the 3–4 questions that follow a text, form one of the largest portions of the YDS score. The questions come in forms such as main idea, detail, inference, and word meaning. However academic and abstract the text may seem, the answer is always within the text; no outside knowledge or guesswork is needed.
Example logic: In a question beginning "According to the passage, the main reason for..." the answer is a reason clearly written in the text; you are asked not to interpret but to match the text correctly. In inference questions ("It can be inferred that..."), the answer is not written verbatim in the text but follows logically from what the text says.
Tactic: Read the questions first, then return to the text. This way, as you scan the text, you know exactly what you are looking for and do not lose time on unnecessary sentences. The "distractors" in the options often contain a word that appears in the text but distort its meaning; trust the matching of meaning, not the matching of words.
The most critical factThe largest portion of the score is carried by reading and paragraph blocks. Transferring the time you save from vocabulary and grammar to the reading paragraphs is the real key to a high number of correct answers.
7. Closest-in-Meaning Sentence (Restatement)
In this type, a sentence is given and the correct option is the one that restates it without changing its meaning. That is, you will find the sentence that expresses the same idea with a different grammatical structure.
Example logic: The closest meaning to "Unless investment increases, unemployment will rise." is "If investment does not increase, unemployment will rise." The correct option preserves exactly the condition, negation, and result relationship in the original.
Tactic: Note the three skeletons of the original sentence: who, did what, under which condition/relationship. Then eliminate the options according only to whether these three elements are preserved. Distractors often reverse cause and effect, turn possibility into certainty, or drop an element entirely.
8. Dialogue Completion
In a short conversation between two or more people, one line is left blank; you choose the sentence that best fits the flow of the conversation. This type measures conversational logic and discursive coherence more than grammar.
Example logic: If the line right after the blank is "Yes, but I still think it's too expensive," then the blank must have contained a suggestion or a defense. You understand whether the blank is an answer to a question or a response to a suggestion by looking at what comes before and after the blank.
Tactic: Never skip the sentence after the blank. In most dialogue questions, the key to the answer is in the reaction that comes after the blank. Reaction words like "So," "but," "actually" reveal what must have been said in the blank.
9. Paragraph Completion (Placing the Right Sentence)
A one-sentence blank is left within a paragraph, and the option that most coherently completes the flow of the paragraph is chosen. The blank can be at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end of the paragraph, and its position changes the solution strategy.
Example logic: If the blank is at the beginning of the paragraph, the correct sentence is usually a general introduction that presents the topic. If in the middle, it must build a bridge between the previous and next sentences. If at the end, it carries the quality of a conclusion or summary.
Tactic: Follow the connecting clues (this, these, such, however, as a result) in the sentence before and after the blank. The correct sentence must be consistent with a reference such as "this problem" in the following sentence. Pronoun and reference agreement quickly eliminates three of the four options.
10. The Sentence That Disrupts Coherence
In this type, a paragraph made up of 5 numbered sentences is given, and you find which sentence is contrary to the coherence of the topic, that is, the "odd one out." The odd sentence is often grammatically flawless; the problem is only that it strays from the topic.
Example logic: If the paragraph is about "the advantages of solar energy" and one sentence suddenly speaks of "the cost of wind energy," then even though the topic is in the same general area, the focus has shifted and that sentence disrupts the coherence.
Tactic: The first sentence almost always determines the topic of the paragraph and is accepted as correct. Note the focus established in the first sentence with a single word, then question one by one whether each sentence serves that focus. The sentence that does not touch the focus is the answer.
Worked example: restatement (closest-in-meaning sentence)
Restatement is one of the types most candidates get wrong, because the options use the same words and skillfully shift the meaning. The rule is simple: the correct option must preserve all the meaning elements of the original sentence (contrast, possibility, negation, result), adding or removing none of them.
Question.
Correct answer: B. The three elements of the original sentence are fully preserved: (1) concession/contrast — even though ... warned = ignoring ... warnings; (2) proceeding unchanged — proceeded unchanged = went ahead without changes; (3) the content of the warning is a possibility — could/might backfire. B adds no new information.
Why the distractors are wrong:
- A) modified: Says "modified"; but the original sentence says unchanged. Directly opposite.
- C) withdrawn: Says the reform was withdrawn; in the original sentence the government proceeded. The result is reversed.
- D) only after ... would not backfire: Changes the condition; invents that the government proceeded "once it was confirmed it would not backfire."
- E) The reform backfired: Adds that the reform actually backfired; the original sentence only says it proceeded despite the warning and does not state the outcome.
| Why it earns points | Why it loses points |
| Preserves the modal possibility (could/might) in the original sentence without turning it into certainty. | Thinks the first option it sees with the same words (word overlap) is correct. |
| Matches the contrast and the "proceeding unchanged" elements one by one. | Cannot eliminate the option (E: backfired) that adds a result not in the sentence. |
| Quickly weeds out the options (A, C) that reverse the meaning. | Looks at only part of the sentence and does not check for coherence. |
Question Distribution and Time Management (80 Questions / 180 Minutes)
On the YDS, strategy determines the score as much as technical knowledge does. Dividing 180 minutes equally among 80 questions is a wrong approach, because vocabulary and grammar questions can take seconds while reading paragraphs can take minutes. The goal is to transfer the time you gain from the quickly solved sections to the reading blocks that carry the bulk of the score.
180 mintotal exam time
~2 minaverage per question
10different question types
| Question group | Approximate approach | Recommendation |
| Vocabulary and grammar | ~1 minute per question | You either know it or you don't; if stuck, mark it and move on |
| Cloze test | ~4–5 minutes per paragraph | Read the whole first, then solve the blanks |
| Sentence/paragraph completion, restatement | ~1.5–2 minutes per question | Focus on conjunction and reference clues |
| Reading paragraphs | ~4–6 minutes per text | Read the question first, then scan the text |
A practical time plan works like this: In the first pass, do only the quickly solved vocabulary, grammar, and questions you are sure of, marking and skipping every question you get stuck on. When this pass is over, devote the time you have accumulated to the marked questions and the reading paragraphs. Getting stuck on a question for more than two minutes means missing three easy questions; on the YDS a single hard question and three easy questions carry the same score.
Final reminder: On the YDS a wrong answer does not cancel out a correct one, so leaving questions blank makes no sense. Be sure to mark all questions before time runs out; even on questions you are unsure of, a guess made after a reasonable elimination is always more profitable than leaving them blank.
Knowing each of these question types means knowing in advance which reflex to trigger in the exam. Combine your knowledge with this strategy; do not neglect working with our YDS vocabulary guide to strengthen your vocabulary, or reinforcing your grammar patterns with regular review. A candidate who studies with the right technique gets a much higher number of correct answers with the same knowledge.
