İki metni ilişkilendirmek ve bir cümlenin metindeki görevini adlandırmak, SAT'in en çok yakın iki şık ürettiği alan. Burada refleksi kurarız.
Relating two texts and naming what a sentence does within a text is the area where the SAT most often produces two very close answer choices. This is where we build the reflex.
Digital SAT Reading & Writing bölümünün Craft & Structure alanı, tek bir cümleyi anlamaktan öte, bir metnin nasıl kurulduğunu ve iki metnin birbiriyle nasıl konuştuğunu görmeni ister. Bu sayfa üç akraba soru tipini birlikte işler: Cross-Text Connections (iki metin arasındaki ilişki), Text Structure & Purpose (metnin genel amacı) ve altı çizili cümlenin işlevi.
The Digital SAT Reading & Writing section's Craft & Structure area wants you to see, beyond merely understanding a single sentence, how a text is built and how two texts speak to one another. This page treats three related question types together: Cross-Text Connections (the relationship between two texts), Text Structure & Purpose (the overall purpose of the text), and the function of the underlined sentence.
|---|---|---|
| Function (altı çizili cümle) | Cümleyi kapat, komşu cümleleri ve ilk kelimeyi (Yet/however) oku; görevi fiille adlandır | Doğru ama yanlış görev |
| Main purpose | Metni bir kez oku, tek cümlelik görev ifadesi kur | Tek detaya kilitlenen 'çok dar' şık |
| Cross-Text Connections | Text 1 iddiası + Text 2 tutum etiketi (destek/niteleme/çelişki) | 'Tam zıt' / 'any-never' aşırı şık |
| Genel | İçeriği değil fiili karşılaştır | Yarı-doğru (ilk yarı doğru, ikinci yarı çelişir) |
| Question type | First move | Most common trap |
|---|---|---|
| Function (underlined sentence) | Cover the sentence, read the neighboring sentences and the first word (Yet/however); name the role with a verb | True but wrong role |
| Main purpose | Read the text once, form a one-sentence purpose statement | A 'too narrow' choice locked onto a single detail |
| Cross-Text Connections | Text 1's claim + Text 2's stance label (support/qualification/contradiction) | 'Exact opposite' / 'any-never' extreme choice |
| General | Compare the verb, not the content | Half-right (first half true, second half contradicts) |
|---|---|---|
| Text Structure & Purpose (main purpose) | 1-2 | Metnin bütününün ana amacı nedir? |
| Function of underlined sentence | 1-2 | Altı çizili cümle metinde hangi görevi yapar? |
| Cross-Text Connections | ~2 | Text 2 yazarı, Text 1'deki bir noktaya nasıl karşılık verir? |
The Digital SAT Reading & Writing section is a 54-question, two-module (adaptive) test divided into four main content areas. The Craft & Structure area that this page addresses makes up about 28% of the test — that is, a total of 13-15 questions across the two modules. This area has three sub-skills: Words in Context (vocabulary), Text Structure & Purpose and Cross-Text Connections. This page focuses on the last two: the text's structure/purpose and how two texts relate to each other.
The shared DNA of these question types is this: they ask you not what the text says, but what a sentence or an author does. The same words in one context 'support a claim,' in another 'present an objection.' This is why these questions test, far more than reading speed, your reading awareness (metacognition).
| Sub-skill | Approx. questions | What it asks you |
|---|---|---|
| Text Structure & Purpose (main purpose) | 1-2 | What is the main purpose of the text as a whole? |
| Function of underlined sentence | 1-2 | What role does the underlined sentence play in the text? |
| Cross-Text Connections | ~2 | How does the author of Text 2 respond to a point in Text 1? |
Bu ailede üç kalıbı ezberle. Yönerge cümlesini görür görmez hangi refleksi çalıştıracağını bilmelisin.
1) Ana amaç (main purpose). Tipik yönerge:
2) Altı çizili cümlenin işlevi (function). Tipik yönerge:
3) Cross-Text Connections (iki metin). İki kısa metin (Text 1 ve Text 2) verilir. Tipik yönergeler:
Memorize three templates in this family. The moment you see the prompt sentence, you should know which reflex to trigger.
1) Main purpose. Typical prompt:
2) Function of the underlined sentence. Typical prompt:
3) Cross-Text Connections (two texts). Two short texts (Text 1 and Text 2) are given. Typical prompts:
Use a protocol that is shared but diverges across the three question types.
Four steps for Function (underlined sentence):
For Main purpose: After reading the text, ask 'What is this text DOING?' and form a one-sentence purpose statement (e.g. 'it summarizes a new finding and points out one of its limits'). Then pick the choice closest to that statement. A choice locked onto a single paragraph/detail is wrong.
For Cross-Text:
Bu soru ailesinde doğru cevabı bulmak, cümlelerin üstlendiği retorik görevleri tanımaya bağlıdır. Aşağıdaki fiil sözlüğü, şıklarda en çok görülen işlev kelimeleridir.
| İşlev fiili (EN) | Türkçe karşılığı | Metinde nasıl görünür |
|---|---|---|
| introduce a claim | bir iddia ortaya atar | Metnin başında tez cümlesi |
| qualify / temper a claim | iddiayı sınırlandırır/yumuşatır | however, although, in some cases |
| counter / challenge | karşı çıkar, itiraz eder | but, yet, critics argue |
| concede | bir noktayı kabul eder (sonra dönmek üzere) | admittedly, to be sure, granted |
| illustrate / exemplify | örnekle somutlaştırır | for instance, such as |
| anticipate an objection | olası itirazı önceden karşılar | one might object that... |
| provide evidence for | kanıt sunar | data, study, measurement |
| situate / contextualize | bağlama yerleştirir | arka plan, tarihsel çerçeve |
Finding the correct answer in this question family depends on recognizing the rhetorical roles that sentences take on. The verb glossary below lists the function words seen most often in the choices.
| Function verb (EN) | Meaning | How it appears in the text |
|---|---|---|
| introduce a claim | puts forward a claim | Thesis sentence at the start of the text |
| qualify / temper a claim | limits/softens the claim | however, although, in some cases |
| counter / challenge | opposes, objects | but, yet, critics argue |
| concede | accepts a point (only to turn back later) | admittedly, to be sure, granted |
| illustrate / exemplify | makes concrete with an example | for instance, such as |
| anticipate an objection | heads off a possible objection in advance | one might object that... |
| provide evidence for | presents evidence | data, study, measurement |
| situate / contextualize | places in context | background, historical frame |
Bu ailede çeldiriciler dört klasik kalıbı izler. Her yanlış şıkkı bu etiketlerden biriyle eşle; böylece 'kulağa doğru geliyor' hissini nesnelleştirirsin.
"Doğru ama yanlış görev" çeldiricisi metinde geçen gerçek bir bilgiyi söyler; bu yüzden doğru hisseder. Ölçüt bilginin doğruluğu değil, altı çizili cümlenin işlevidir — önce görevi adlandır, sonra şık seç.
In this family distractors follow four classic patterns. Match every wrong choice to one of these labels; that way you objectify the 'sounds right' feeling.
The "true but wrong function" distractor states a real piece of information that occurs in the text; this is why it feels right. The criterion is not the truth of the information but the underlined sentence's function — name the role first, then choose the answer.
Şıklar:
A) It provides additional evidence that New Caledonian crows possess advanced intelligence.
B) It introduces a complication that qualifies the conclusion suggested by the preceding sentence.
C) It explains why pigeons outperform crows on most cognitive tasks.
D) It concedes a minor limitation before reaffirming the link between tool use and intelligence.
Doğru cevap: B. 'introduces a complication that qualifies the conclusion' tam da 'Yet' + 'complicates' sinyalleriyle örtüşür.
Choices:
A) It provides additional evidence that New Caledonian crows possess advanced intelligence.
B) It introduces a complication that qualifies the conclusion suggested by the preceding sentence.
C) It explains why pigeons outperform crows on most cognitive tasks.
D) It concedes a minor limitation before reaffirming the link between tool use and intelligence.
Solution. Look at the surrounding sentences. The preceding sentence says crows use sophisticated tools (EVIDENCE for the view). The underlined sentence begins with 'Yet' and shows the exact opposite: the same birds fail simple causal-reasoning tests. The final sentence, saying 'the finding complicates...', confirms that this sentence is a complication. So the sentence takes the 'tool use = intelligence' conclusion implied by the preceding sentence and qualifies and limits it.
Correct answer: B. 'introduces a complication that qualifies the conclusion' matches exactly the 'Yet' + 'complicates' signals.
Soru: Based on the texts, how would Ferrer (Text 2) most likely respond to the claim in Text 1 that flexibility is the gig economy's defining advantage?
Şıklar:
A) By agreeing that flexibility is the sector's central benefit but arguing it should be extended to more workers.
B) By contending that the flexibility described is largely unavailable to workers who most need the income.
C) By rejecting the idea that gig work offers any opportunity to excluded groups.
D) By claiming that traditional employment provides more genuine flexibility than platform work.
Çözüm. Önce Text 1'in hedef iddiası: 'esneklik bu sektörün tanımlayıcı avantajıdır.' Text 2'nin tutumunu etiketle: Ferrer esnekliğin 'nominal' olduğunu, yani gelir için çalışmak zorunda olanların bu esnekliği gerçekte kullanamadığını söylüyor. Bu bir niteleme/çelişkilendirme: avantaj 'yalnızca platformun teşviklerini görmezden gelebilecekler' için gerçek. Yani esneklik, ona en çok ihtiyacı olanlara ulaşmıyor.
Doğru cevap: B. 'largely unavailable to workers who most need the income' Ferrer'in gözlemini birebir ifade eder.
Question: Based on the texts, how would Ferrer (Text 2) most likely respond to the claim in Text 1 that flexibility is the gig economy's defining advantage?
Choices:
A) By agreeing that flexibility is the sector's central benefit but arguing it should be extended to more workers.
B) By contending that the flexibility described is largely unavailable to workers who most need the income.
C) By rejecting the idea that gig work offers any opportunity to excluded groups.
D) By claiming that traditional employment provides more genuine flexibility than platform work.
Solution. First, Text 1's target claim: 'flexibility is this sector's defining advantage.' Label Text 2's stance: Ferrer says the flexibility is 'nominal,' i.e. those who must work for income cannot actually use it. This is a qualification/contestation: the advantage is real only 'for those who can afford to ignore the platform's incentives.' In other words, flexibility does not reach those who need it most.
Correct answer: B. 'largely unavailable to workers who most need the income' expresses Ferrer's observation exactly.
Her R&W modülünde 27 soru için 32 dakika, yani soru başına ortalama ~71 saniye vardır. Craft & Structure soruları kısa pasajlı olduğu için bunları hedef sürenin altında bitirip zamanı daha uzun Information & Ideas sorularına aktar.
In each R&W module you have 32 minutes for 27 questions, i.e. on average ~71 seconds per question. Because Craft & Structure questions have short passages, finish them under the target time and transfer the saved time to the longer Information & Ideas questions.
İki yazar arasındaki ilişki neredeyse her zaman şu beş tipten biridir. Doğru şık bu tiplerden birini tam olarak yansıtır; çeldirici çoğu zaman komşu tipe kayar (örneğin 'qualify' yerine 'reject').
| Tutum tipi | Ne yapar | Şıkta tipik dili |
|---|---|---|
| Agree / support | Text 2, Text 1'in iddiasını destekler veya kanıtla güçlendirir | supports, reinforces, agrees |
| Disagree / reject | Text 2 iddiaya doğrudan karşı çıkar | disputes, challenges, rejects |
| Qualify / temper | İddiayı reddetmez ama koşula bağlar, sınırlarını gösterir | qualifies, is unavailable to, only for |
| Extend / build on | İddiayı kabul edip bir adım öteye taşır | extends, broadens, applies to |
| Provide example / illustrate | İddia için somut bir örnek veya vaka sunar | illustrates, exemplifies, offers a case |
SAT'ın en sevdiği doğru cevap qualify tipidir: Text 2 çoğu zaman Text 1'i tümden yıkmaz, onu 'yalnızca şu koşulda doğru' diye ölçer.
Soru 'Text 2 yazarı nasıl karşılık verir' diyorsa, cevap Text 2'nin kendi kanıtından türemeli; Text 1'in diliyle örtüşen şık büyük olasılıkla bu tuzaktır.
'How would the author most likely respond' kalıbı bir çıkarım ister, serbest tahmin değil. Doğru şık, yazarın metinde yazdıklarından makul biçimde türetilebilen en yakın tutumdur; metnin bir adım ötesine geçen güçlü iddialar (proves, never, any, entirely, the sole cause) neredeyse her zaman yanlıştır. Yazar bir noktayı 'sınırlı' buluyorsa, bu 'değersiz' demek değildir; 'çoğu zaman' diyorsa 'her zaman' demek değildir. Metnin ölçüsünü şıkka birebir taşı.
In reaching the 750+ band, the difference is that instead of crudely splitting the relationship between two texts into 'agrees / disagrees,' you name it with the correct stance type. The SAT's Cross-Text distractors almost always either propose the wrong stance type, or assign one author's view to the other, or build a claim stronger than the text states. The three reflexes below close these three patterns.
The relationship between two authors is almost always one of these five types. The correct choice reflects one of these types exactly; the distractor often slides to a neighboring type (e.g. 'reject' instead of 'qualify').
| Stance type | What it does | Typical wording in the choice |
|---|---|---|
| Agree / support | Text 2 supports Text 1's claim or strengthens it with evidence | supports, reinforces, agrees |
| Disagree / reject | Text 2 directly opposes the claim | disputes, challenges, rejects |
| Qualify / temper | Does not reject the claim but makes it conditional, shows its limits | qualifies, is unavailable to, only for |
| Extend / build on | Accepts the claim and carries it one step further | extends, broadens, applies to |
| Provide example / illustrate | Offers a concrete example or case for the claim | illustrates, exemplifies, offers a case |
The SAT's favorite correct answer is the qualify type: Text 2 often does not tear Text 1 down entirely, but measures it as 'true only under this condition.' That is why 'fully rejects' or 'fully agrees' choices are the first candidates to eliminate.
Before moving to the choices, compress both authors into a single sentence. This 'compression' makes fuzzy reading impossible and brings the stance out clearly. For example: 'Text 1: flexibility is the gig economy's chief advantage. Text 2: this flexibility is nominal for most.' When you place the two sentences side by side, the relationship (qualification) appears on its own. If you can't form the sentence, you haven't understood the text well enough; reading the choices does not make up for this, it only leaves you open to the distractor.
The sneakiest Cross-Text distractor attributes Text 1's view to Text 2 (or vice versa). The choice contains a correct idea, but the idea belongs to the wrong author. You catch this instantly with your one-sentence summaries: match the choice's claim by asking 'is this Text 1's or Text 2's sentence?' If the question says 'how would the author of Text 2 respond,' the answer must derive from Text 2's own evidence; a choice that overlaps with Text 1's language is most likely this trap.
The 'How would the author most likely respond' template calls for an inference, not free guessing. The correct choice is the closest stance that can reasonably be derived from what the author wrote in the text; strong claims that go one step beyond the text (proves, never, any, entirely, the sole cause) are almost always wrong. If the author finds a point 'limited,' that does not mean 'worthless'; if they say 'often,' that does not mean 'always.' Carry the text's measure into the choice exactly.
Bu ailenin altın kuralı: ne dediği değil, ne yaptığı. Function sorularında cümlenin görevini bir fiille adlandır, sinyal kelimesini (Yet, however, for instance) yakala ve şıkları fiil bazında karşılaştır. Main purpose'ta metnin bütününü kapsayan tek cümlelik görev ifadesi kur; tek detayı özetleyen şıkı ele. Cross-Text'te önce Text 1'in iddiasını, sonra Text 2'nin tutumunu (destek/niteleme/çelişki) etiketle; sert 'any/never/proves' ve 'tam zıt' çeldiricilerine karşı ölçümlü şıkı tercih et.
Sonraki adım: Bu refleksleri gerçek deneme temposunda pekiştir. Cümle-içi bağlaçlar zayıfsa gramer-linking-words ve gramer-relative-clauses sayfalarını çalış. Bölüm genel stratejisi için blog-sat-reading-writing, sınav öncesi son hazırlık için blog-sat-rw-son-2-hafta yazılarına göz at.
The golden rule of this family: not what it says, but what it does. In Function questions, name the sentence's role with a verb, catch the signal word (Yet, however, for instance), and compare the choices on the verb. In Main purpose, form a one-sentence purpose statement that covers the whole text; discard the choice that summarizes a single detail. In Cross-Text, first label Text 1's claim, then Text 2's stance (support/qualification/contradiction); against harsh 'any/never/proves' and 'exact opposite' distractors, prefer the measured choice.
Next step: Reinforce these reflexes at real practice-test pace. If your within-sentence connectives are weak, study the gramer-linking-words and gramer-relative-clauses pages. For overall section strategy, see the blog-sat-reading-writingpost, and for final prep before the exam, see blog-sat-rw-son-2-hafta.
