Model United Nations (MUN) is an academic simulation in which students act as delegates representing a country and bring United Nations committees to life. The goal is not merely to speak English; it is to combine research, negotiation, persuasion and formal writing inside a genuine diplomatic setting. This guide walks you through MUN committees, the different procedural traditions (THIMUN and others), the core documents, and exactly how to prepare.
Model United Nations is a simulation in which, across a conference, students run real UN organs (the General Assembly, the Security Council, specialised agencies) in representative form. Each delegate speaks not for their own country but for an assigned country, and must defend that state's foreign policy, interests and alliances. This single rule sets MUN apart from an ordinary debate: you defend not your personal opinion but the stance of the state you represent.
MUN is a powerful activity for university applications and academic growth because it exercises many skills at once: researching a global issue, public speaking in academic English, real-time negotiation, diplomatic language for consensus, and formal document writing. Here English becomes not a subject but a tool — and that is precisely how a language improves fastest.
At the heart of the simulation lies a single tension: the balance between national interest and global consensus. While protecting your country's red lines, you must stay flexible enough to bring the committee together on a shared text. A good delegate carries both at once: consistent yet conciliatory. That is why MUN demands not only rhetoric but also strategy, empathy and patience.
For the participant, MUN is a chance to step outside classroom English and use the language under genuine pressure. In a single day you stand up, listen, take notes, object and compromise dozens of times. That intensity produces faster progress than months of passive study, because every sentence has a consequence — you either win an ally or lose one of your clauses.
The golden rule of MUN: you defend not your own view but the official position of your assigned country. You may personally oppose capital punishment, but if your country supports it you must hold that line consistently in committee. This distinction teaches both impartial research and critical empathy.
| ECOSOC & uzman organlar | UNHRC, WHO, UNEP, UNODC gibi; belirli bir alana odaklı orta ölçekli komiteler. Uzmanlık ve teknik dil ister. |
| Güvenlik Konseyi (UNSC) | Küçük (15 üye), hızlı, yüksek baskılı; veto yetkili beş daimi üye (P5). Kararları bağlayıcıdır. İleri delegeler için. |
| Kriz komiteleri | Gerçek zamanlı gelişen senaryolar, directive'ler, arka-oda entrikaları ve portfolio power'lar; en dinamik format. |
Genel Kurul (General Assembly).
An MUN conference is split into several committees; each offers a different agenda, a different scale and a different tempo. Which committee you are assigned to largely shapes your experience, so knowing the committee types in advance lets you arrive with the right expectations.
| Committee | Character |
|---|---|
| General Assembly (GA) | Large, many delegates (often 50+); formal and slower. Resolutions are recommendatory, not binding. Ideal for beginners. |
| ECOSOC & specialised organs | Bodies like UNHRC, WHO, UNEP, UNODC; mid-sized committees focused on a specific field. Demands expertise and technical language. |
| Security Council (UNSC) | Small (15 members), fast, high-pressure; five permanent members (P5) hold the veto. Its resolutions are binding. For advanced delegates. |
| Crisis committees | Scenarios that unfold in real time, directives, backroom intrigue and portfolio powers; the most dynamic format. |
General Assembly. The UN's broadest organ, where every member state has an equal vote. In MUN, GA committees (such as DISEC, SOCHUM, SPECPOL and Legal) are crowded and formal. Because the tempo is slow, you have time to plan your speaking turn, build blocs and absorb the rules. Even though resolutions are recommendatory in the simulation, this is where the skill of persuading a large majority is tested.
ECOSOC and specialised organs. The Economic and Social Council and its agencies are smaller and issue-focused. In WHO, for example, you debate pandemic response; in UNEP, climate finance; in UNHRC, human-rights violations. General political rhetoric is not enough here; you are expected to know the field's technical terms and its real programmes.
Security Council (UNSC). It works with only 15 members and is MUN's most intense standard committee. Five permanent members — the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom and France (the P5) — hold the veto: a single P5 veto defeats a substantive resolution even if the majority supports it. Negotiation therefore revolves around the P5's red lines; a small miscalculation can collapse your entire draft.
Crisis committees. Instead of a fixed agenda, they run on a scenario that develops in real time. Delegates are often a minister of a state, a historical figure or the head of an institution, and each has a portfolio power (a personal domain of authority: the army, intelligence, the budget, the media, and so on). The committee responds to events through short action documents called directives; delegates also make individual moves through secret notes to the backroom (crisis staff). Speed, creativity and risk-taking are rewarded here.
Start with a large GA committee: its tempo is forgiving, it gives you time to plan your speaking turn, and you learn the rules without pressure. Try crisis and the UNSC after a few conferences; there, rule knowledge and reflexes matter far more.
MUN'un tek bir kural kitabı yoktur; konferanslar farklı prosedür gelenekleri kullanır. En sık karşılaşacağın üçü şunlardır — atandığın konferansın hangisini kullandığını önceden öğrenmek kritik önemdedir çünkü aynı hedefe farklı yollarla ve farklı ritimlerle gidilir.
The Hague International MUN geleneği. Uzlaşı odaklı ve resmîdir: oturum öncesi lobicilik (lobbying) ile delegeler karar tasarılarını birleştirir, bir Onay Paneli (Approval Panel) tasarıları denetler, tartışma büyük ölçüde resmî konuşma listeleri üzerinden yürür.
Common in European and international-school conferences.
Many conferences in Turkey lean toward this tradition.Gündem sabit değildir; komite gerçek zamanlı olaylara directive'lerle tepki verir. Bireysel eylem, hız ve yaratıcılık ödüllendirilir.
Requires a separate, action-first mindset.
MUN has no single rulebook; conferences use different procedural traditions. The three you will meet most often are below — learning which one your conference uses in advance is critical, because they reach the same goal by different routes and at different rhythms.
The Hague International MUN tradition. It is consensus-oriented and formal: through pre-session lobbying delegates merge draft resolutions, an Approval Panel vets the drafts, and debate runs largely through formal speakers' lists.
Common in European and international-school conferences. The more dynamic tradition used by conferences such as Harvard (HMUN). Moderated and unmoderated caucuses, the working paper → draft resolution flow and more fluid negotiation take centre stage.
Many conferences in Turkey lean toward this tradition. The agenda is not fixed; the committee responds to real-time events with directives. Individual action, speed and creativity are rewarded.
Requires a separate, action-first mindset. The difference lies not only in terminology but in rhythm. In THIMUN, most of the day is given to formal speakers' lists and to lobbying done in advance; caucuses are rarer, and drafts pass through an Approval Panel before entering the session. Success in THIMUN therefore begins with getting your draft accepted by the right blocs during pre-session lobbying. Delegates speak longer and more prepared, with fewer interruptions.
In the traditional / North American tradition, the day is frequently broken up by moderated and unmoderated caucuses; delegates rise and raise a motion to shape the form of debate themselves. Documents are written during the session, through real-time bargaining. Here success depends largely on forming alliances on the spot in caucuses and on timing your procedural moves well.
In crisis procedure the flow is entirely event-driven: each new development pushes the committee to write a new directive, individual secret moves run in parallel, and classic long speeches give way to short, sharp interventions. In all three traditions the core concepts (speaking, voting, documents) are shared; what changes is the speed and the order in which they turn.
The details of these three traditions vary from conference to conference. For exact motion names, time limits, voting thresholds and caucus rules, always read your conference's own Rules of Procedure from the start. That is your single biggest advantage on day one.
Whatever the procedure, an MUN session follows a recognisable skeleton. The step-by-step walkthrough below shows how a typical day flows from start to finish; the exact order and timings vary by conference, so confirm against your own Rules of Procedure.
| # | Stage | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Roll Call | The chair reads countries alphabetically; the delegate says "present" or "present and voting". A delegate who says "present and voting" cannot abstain in the substantive vote. |
| 2 | Setting the Agenda | If there are several topics, a motion and vote decide which is debated first. |
| 3 | General Speakers' List (GSL) | Ordered, formal speeches on the topic begin; this is the backbone of debate and stays open throughout. |
| 4 | Moderated Caucus | Focused debate in which the chair takes short, ordered speeches on a specific sub-topic. |
| 5 | Unmoderated Caucus | Time in which delegates leave their seats, negotiate freely, form blocs and write documents. |
| 6 | Drafting | Blocs turn a working paper into a draft resolution; sponsors and signatories are established. |
| 7 | Amendments | Additions, deletions or changes to operative clauses are proposed and debated. |
| 8 | Voting Procedure | Amendments first, then the draft as a whole, are voted on; the committee closes. |
1) Roll Call. The day opens with the chair's roll call. Your answer matters: if you say "present and voting" you cannot abstain on substantive resolutions and must vote only yes or no. If you are unsure, simply saying "present" is more flexible.
2) Setting the agenda. If two topics face the committee, a vote decides which is taken first. This is the first procedural battle; you lobby early to bring forward the topic that serves your country's interest.
3) General Speakers' List. The GSL is the ordered list of general speeches on the topic and is the spine of the session. Add your name early; when your turn comes you set out your country's stance clearly. The list is where the committee defaults whenever no other business is under way.
4-5) Caucuses. To deepen debate, delegates raise motions. In a moderated caucus the chair takes short speeches on a specific sub-topic — for example 45-second interventions on "sources of funding". In an unmoderated caucus the rules are suspended: delegates rise, cluster, bargain, and most real drafting begins here.
6-7) Documents and amendments. Blocs first gather their ideas in a working paper, then turn it into a formal draft resolution. Once the draft is introduced, delegates propose amendments to the operative clauses: adding, deleting or changing a clause. Friendly amendments are usually accepted without debate; unfriendly ones are voted on separately.
8) Voting. When debate closes, the committee moves into voting procedure. Amendments are voted on one by one, then the draft as a whole. A simple majority is enough for most GA resolutions; in the UNSC, nine affirmative votes and no P5 veto are required. An adopted draft is recorded as the committee's final product.
Rules of Procedure (ROP), komitenin dilbilgisidir: kim ne zaman konuşur, tartışma nasıl açılır, oylama nasıl yürür. İngilizcede bu kurallar sabit ifadelerle ifade edilir; birkaçını ezbere bilmek seni anında "deneyimli" gösterir. Aşağıdaki İngilizce kalıp sözlüğü, en sık kullanılanları içerir.
| İngilizce kalıp | Ne için kullanılır |
|---|---|
| Point of Order | Başkanın veya bir delegenin prosedür hatası yaptığını belirtmek. Tartışmayı kesebilir. |
| Point of Information | Konuşan delegeye içerik sorusu sormak (konuşmacı izin verirse). |
| Point of Parliamentary Inquiry | Başkana prosedürle ilgili bir soru sormak ("Şimdi ne yapabilirim?"). |
| Point of Personal Privilege | Kişisel rahatsızlığı bildirmek ("duyamıyorum", sıcak, vb.); konuşmayı kesebilen tek point budur. |
| Motion to Set the Agenda | Hangi konunun önce görüşüleceğini önermek. |
| Motion to Open the General Speakers' List | GSL'yi başlatmak. |
| Motion for a Moderated Caucus | Belirli bir alt-konuda odaklı tartışma açmak (süre + konuşmacı süresi belirtilir). |
| Motion for an Unmoderated Caucus | Serbest müzakere/belge yazımı için ara açmak. |
| Motion to Introduce a Draft Resolution | Yazılan tasarıyı komiteye resmen tanıtmak. |
| Motion to Move into Voting Procedure | Tartışmayı kapatıp oylamaya geçmek. |
| Yield | Kalan süreni bırakmak: başkana, başka bir delegeye ya da sorulara ("I yield my time to…"). |
Bir motion, komitenin bir şey yapmasını önermendir; başkan çoğu zaman "is there a second?" diye sorar ve destek gelirse motion oylanır.
Motion verirken kalıp nettir: "Motion for a moderated caucus, duration ten minutes, speaking time forty-five seconds, on the topic of funding mechanisms." Üç bilgiyi hep birlikte söyle: toplam süre, konuşmacı başına süre ve konu. Bunu akıcı söylemek, başkanın gözünde seni öne çıkarır.
Motion adları, oy eşikleri (basit çoğunluk mu, üçte iki mi) ve hangi point'lerin konuşmayı kesebildiği konferanstan konferansa farklıdır. Yukarıdakiler yaygın standarttır; kesin kullanım için konferansının Rules of Procedure belgesini teyit et.
The Rules of Procedure (ROP) are the committee's grammar: who speaks when, how debate opens, how voting runs. In English these rules are expressed through fixed phrases; knowing a few by heart instantly makes you look "experienced". The English phrase glossary below covers the most common ones.
| English phrase | What it is used for |
|---|---|
| Point of Order | To note that the chair or a delegate has made a procedural mistake. It may interrupt debate. |
| Point of Information | To ask the speaking delegate a question of substance (if the speaker allows). |
| Point of Parliamentary Inquiry | To ask the chair a question about procedure ("What can I do now?"). |
| Point of Personal Privilege | To report personal discomfort ("I can't hear", heat, etc.); this is the only point that may interrupt a speech. |
| Motion to Set the Agenda | To propose which topic is debated first. |
| Motion to Open the General Speakers' List | To start the GSL. |
| Motion for a Moderated Caucus | To open focused debate on a sub-topic (total time + speaking time are stated). |
| Motion for an Unmoderated Caucus | To open a break for free negotiation / drafting. |
| Motion to Introduce a Draft Resolution | To formally introduce a written draft to the committee. |
| Motion to Move into Voting Procedure | To close debate and proceed to the vote. |
| Yield | To give up your remaining time: to the chair, to another delegate, or to questions ("I yield my time to…"). |
A motion is your proposal that the committee do something; the chair often asks "is there a second?", and if support comes the motion is voted on. A point, by contrast, is usually not voted on — it either corrects a mistake (order), asks a question (information/inquiry) or reports a personal need (personal privilege). Not confusing the two is the first sign of procedural fluency.
When raising a motion the formula is clear: "Motion for a moderated caucus, duration ten minutes, speaking time forty-five seconds, on the topic of funding mechanisms." Always give three pieces of information together: total time, time per speaker, and topic. Saying this fluently makes you stand out in the chair's eyes.
Motion names, voting thresholds (simple majority or two-thirds) and which points may interrupt a speech differ from conference to conference. The above is the common standard; for exact usage, confirm your conference's Rules of Procedure.
Frame the issue through your country's lens.Ülkenin bugüne kadarki politikası: imzaladığı anlaşmalar, BM oyları, ulusal yasalar ve resmî açıklamalar. Bu bölüm tutarlılığının kanıtıdır.
Cite treaties, votes and official statements.
Concrete, workable proposals — not vague wishes. The delegation of Brazil…"), kaynaklarını dürüstçe göster, tek sayfayı aşma.
In MUN, writing is as valuable as speaking. The Position Paper you write before the conference is usually a one-page formal text summarising your country's view of the issue, its past actions and its proposed solutions. A good position paper is also the draft of your first speech, and at many conferences it is separately rewarded (Best Position Paper).
A solid position paper rests on three parts. The cards below show what each part contains.
Summarise the problem and why it is urgent, with data where possible. Frame it not as a neutral observer but from your country's point of view: which aspect concerns your state?
Frame the issue through your country's lens.Your country's policy to date: the treaties it has signed, its UN votes, its national laws and official statements. This part is the proof of your consistency.
Cite treaties, votes and official statements. The concrete, workable proposals you will defend in committee. These later become your operative clauses; make them working mechanisms, not vague wishes.
Concrete, workable proposals — not vague wishes.Form matters as much as content: use the third person and formal language ("The delegation of Brazil…"), cite your sources honestly, and do not exceed one page. A good position paper introduces you to the dais as a serious delegate before the committee even begins; a poor one gives away in the first paragraph that you did no research.
Turn the third part of your position paper (the solutions) into a 60-second opening speech. That way both your written document and your first GSL speech carry the same core message, and you look consistent.
Yaygın başlangıçlar: Recognizing, Deeply concerned, Bearing in mind, Noting with regret, Reaffirming, Guided by, Emphasizing, Alarmed by.
Yaygın fiiller: Calls upon, Requests, Encourages, Urges, Recommends, Decides, Establishes, Condemns, Endorses. Not: sadece Güvenlik Konseyi Demands ve Decides gibi bağlayıcı-güçlü fiilleri tam anlamıyla kullanabilir; GA kararları tavsiye niteliğindedir.
Preamble: "Deeply concerned by the rising number of climate refugees in coastal regions,"
Operative: "1. Calls upon member states to establish a joint adaptation fund financed by voluntary contributions;"
The resolution is the committee's final product: it gathers into a single formal document how the committee proposes to address the problem. Technically it is one long sentence and consists of two parts: preambulatory clauses that describe the situation, and operative clauses that propose concrete action.
Preambulatory clauses describe the problem and its context; they begin with an italicised verb/phrase, end with a comma, and are not numbered. Common openers: Recognizing, Deeply concerned, Bearing in mind, Noting with regret, Reaffirming, Guided by, Emphasizing, Alarmed by. These establish the situation but call for no action.
Operative clauses state what the committee proposes to do; they begin with an underlined verb, are numbered, and are separated by semicolons. Common verbs: Calls upon, Requests, Encourages, Urges, Recommends, Decides, Establishes, Condemns, Endorses. Note: only the Security Council can fully use binding-strength verbs like Demands and Decides; GA resolutions are recommendatory.
Preamble: "Deeply concerned by the rising number of climate refugees in coastal regions,"
Operative: "1. Calls upon member states to establish a joint adaptation fund financed by voluntary contributions;"
The step-by-step process. (1) In an unmoderated caucus, produce a working paper with like-minded delegates. (2) Separate the ideas into preamble and operative. (3) Give each operative clause a concrete mechanism: who will do what, with which resource? (4) Gather your sponsors (those who write and defend it) and signatories (those who want it debated). (5) Once you meet the signature threshold your conference requires, submit the draft to the dais and introduce it to the committee.
Amendments. After the draft is introduced, changes to its clauses can be proposed. A friendly amendment is a correction accepted by all the draft's sponsors and usually passes without a vote. An unfriendly amendment is one that not all sponsors approve; it is voted on separately by the committee. A good delegate knows how to fold a rival bloc's clause into the text as a friendly amendment to gather broader support.
The preambulatory and operative verb lists are fixed and a wonderful resource for your academic English vocabulary. Choosing the right verb (for example the difference in tone between urges and requests) makes your draft both formal and convincing.
The core role — researches, speaks, negotiates, drafts.Oturumu yönetir, kuralları uygular, konuşma sırasını tutar, delegeleri puanlar. Genellikle deneyimli delegeler için bir sonraki adımdır.
Runs the session and scores delegates. Not iletimi, belge akışı ve lojistik.
The unseen backbone of the conference.
An MUN conference is not made up of delegates alone; several different roles bring the session to life. Which one you start with depends on how experienced you are.
Represents a country; researches, speaks, negotiates and drafts. This is the role at the centre of MUN, and most participants start here.
The core role — researches, speaks, negotiates, drafts.Runs the session, enforces the rules, keeps the speaking order and scores delegates. Usually the next step for experienced delegates.
Runs the session and scores delegates.Note delivery, document flow and logistics. The unseen but indispensable part of the conference; this team carries the running of large events.
The unseen backbone of the conference.Crisis committees also have a backroom (crisis staff): the team that answers delegates' secret notes, drives the scenario forward and triggers new crises. This role is the game's unseen engine; the tempo of a good crisis committee is set entirely by the backroom. The dais, in turn, judges delegates not only by what they say but also by their respect for the rules, their cooperation and their diplomatic tone.
Retorik tutarlılık kritiktir: her zaman üçüncü tekil ve ülke adıyla konuşulur — "I think" değil, "The delegation of France believes…".
Point of Information'lara verdiğin yanıtlar da performansının parçasıdır: soruyu kısaca kabul et, net cevapla, kendi çizgine dön.
İlk 10 saniye her şeyi belirler.
In MUN every speech is short but structured — usually 60-90 seconds. A good delegate speech has three parts: context (why the problem is urgent, seen through the country's eyes), position (what the country proposes) and call to action (the concrete step you invite the committee to take). This trio works both in General Speakers' List speeches and in caucus interventions.
Rhetorical consistency is critical: you always speak in the third person, in your country's name — not "I think" but "The delegation of France believes…". Open your speech with a hook (a striking figure, a short question), develop a single clear argument in the middle, and end by calling the committee to action. Time is short; one strong idea beats three half-ideas.
Your answers to Points of Information are also part of your performance: briefly acknowledge the question, answer it clearly, and return to your line. Be diplomatic, not aggressive — in MUN tone earns as many points as argument. Approaching a hard question with a bridge such as "The delegate raises a fair point; however…" shows both your courtesy and your command. The dais judges you not only by what you say but by how you say it.
The first 10 seconds decide everything. Begin with a strong, memorised opening line — a statistic, a short rhetorical question or a striking observation. It breaks the tension and forces the committee to listen.
A resolution does not pass on its own; blocs pass it. The unmoderated caucus (or lobbying in THIMUN) is the moment you gather with like-minded delegates and prepare a joint draft. There are two roles here: the sponsor (who actively writes and defends the draft) and the signatory (who supports its being debated but is not fully bound to its content). Being a sponsor increases your visibility and your chance of an award.
Good negotiation is not about imposing your own clauses but about finding common ground. To win a delegate from a rival bloc, add a clause that touches their country's interest; that way your draft gathers broader support. Instead of "our clause", think "a clause both sides can sign" — in MUN, success is the art of persuading a majority.
Practical tactics: (1) Move early — build a core bloc in the first unmoderated caucus, because the group that launches a draft first often sets the agenda. (2) Do not lose the quiet delegates — in crowded committees the signatures hide there. (3) Appoint a coordinator: who will write the document, who will collect clauses, who will talk to other blocs? A bloc with divided roles is faster than a scattered one.
Do not lock into a single bloc too early; stay flexible and talk to several blocs. Also, do not sponsor a draft that contradicts your country's real policy — the dais notices, and inconsistency lowers your chance of an award.
Most conferences give individual awards at the end of committee. The ranking is typically: Best Delegate (highest), Outstanding Delegate, Honorable Mention and Verbal Commendation. There are also Best Position Paper and, for schools, Best Delegation awards. Awards go not merely to whoever speaks the most, but to the delegate who stays loyal to their country, advances consensus, writes good drafts and remains diplomatic. "The loudest speaker wins" is a myth.
The criteria the dais looks at when judging a delegate usually fall under four headings: content (depth of research, country knowledge, quality of solutions), diplomacy (building consensus, cooperation, tone), procedure (using the rules correctly) and impact (moving the committee forward, leading a draft). Shining in one area while falling short in the others rarely earns a top award; the winning delegate balances all four.
An invisible but decisive rule: consistency. Keep the same country position across your speeches, your position paper and your negotiations. The delegate who carries the committee to a draft, bridges rival blocs and stays diplomatic under pressure is almost always ahead of the one who stands up and shouts three times.
Deneyimli delegelerin çoğu, ilk konferanslarında aynı birkaç hatayı yapmıştır. Bunları önceden bilmek, öğrenme eğrini kısaltır.
En yaygın hata: ülkenin politikası yerine kişisel fikrini savunmak. Dais bunu anında görür ve puanlar. Her zaman ülkenin çizgisinde kal.
Defend the country, not yourself.Sürekli söz almak etkileşim sanılır ama müzakereyi öldürür. Dinleyip doğru anda müdahale eden delege daha etkilidir.
Listening is half of diplomacy."Ülkeler iş birliği yapmalı" gibi içi boş operative maddeler zayıftır. Kim, neyi, hangi kaynakla yapacak — bunu belirt.
Name the mechanism, not a wish.Motion ve point'leri karıştırmak akıcılığını kırar. Birkaç temel kalıbı ezbere bilmek yeterli avantaj sağlar.
A few phrases go a long way.İki hata daha sık tekrarlanır: tek bloğa erken kilitlenmek (esnekliğini kaybedersin) ve saldırgan üslup (kısa vadede güçlü görünür, uzun vadede müttefik kaybettirir).
Most experienced delegates made the same few mistakes at their first conferences. Knowing them in advance shortens your learning curve.
The most common mistake: defending your personal opinion instead of your country's policy. The dais sees it at once and scores it. Always stay on your country's line.
Defend the country, not yourself.Constantly taking the floor is mistaken for engagement but kills negotiation. The delegate who listens and intervenes at the right moment is more effective.
Listening is half of diplomacy.Empty operative clauses like "countries should cooperate" are weak. State who will do what, with which resource.
Name the mechanism, not a wish.Confusing motions and points breaks your fluency. Knowing a few core phrases by heart gives you enough of an edge.
A few phrases go a long way.Two more mistakes recur often: locking into a single bloc too early (you lose flexibility) and an aggressive tone (it looks strong in the short term but costs you allies in the long term). MUN is not a win-lose game but a game of bringing a majority together on a shared text; your tone should always serve that goal.
Uluslararası ölçekte adını sık duyacağın birkaç konferans vardır (yalnızca örnek ve tanıtım amaçlı; ayrıntılar için ilgili konferansın kendi sitesine bakmalısın):
Lahey'de düzenlenen, THIMUN prosedürünün adını aldığı köklü uluslararası konferans. Uzlaşı odaklı geleneğin merkezi kabul edilir.
The Hague International MUN.Harvard'ın düzenlediği, geleneksel / Kuzey Amerika prosedürünün öne çıktığı büyük ve rekabetçi konferans; lise düzeyinde tanınır.
Harvard Model United Nations.Harvard'ın üniversite düzeyindeki, her yıl farklı bir ülkede düzenlenen küresel konferansı; yüksek uluslararası çeşitliliğiyle bilinir.
Harvard World MUN, hosted in a different country each year.Konferansların tarih, format, komite listesi ve başvuru koşulları yıldan yıla değişir. Yukarıdakiler genel tanıtımdır; katılmayı düşündüğün her konferansın güncel kılavuzunu ve Rules of Procedure belgesini kendi kaynağından doğrula.
MUN conferences spread across a spectrum of scale and prestige. It makes sense to target the smaller ones to start, and larger, international ones as your experience grows.
| Type | Character |
|---|---|
| In-school / local | Small conferences run by a school or club. Ideal for a first experience; low pressure, an environment open to learning. |
| National | Medium-to-large conferences bringing together many schools from one country. More competitive, with more varied committees. |
| International | Large conferences attended by delegates from different countries. The highest diversity, the strongest academic level and the most valuable experience. |
At the international scale there are a few conferences whose names you will hear often (for illustration and introduction only; for details you should check the relevant conference's own site):
A long-established international conference held in The Hague, after which the THIMUN procedure is named. It is regarded as the home of the consensus-oriented tradition.
The Hague International MUN.A large, competitive conference run by Harvard where the traditional / North American procedure is prominent; well known at the high-school level.
Harvard Model United Nations.Harvard's university-level global conference, held in a different country each year; known for its high international diversity.
Harvard World MUN, hosted in a different country each year.Conference dates, formats, committee lists and application requirements change from year to year. The above is a general introduction; verify the current guide and Rules of Procedure of any conference you plan to attend from its own source.

Know your country's policy cold.
Your paper is your first speech in disguise.Konferansın prosedürünü ve temel motion/point kalıplarını ezberle; ilk gün prosedür stresi yaşamazsın.
Memorise a handful of key phrases.60-90 saniyelik net konuşmalar kur; açılışını ve birkaç geçiş cümleni hazır tut. Akıcılık pratikle gelir.
Rehearse aloud, not in your head.
A good MUN performance is won not on the day of the conference but in the preparation before it. The four steps below offer a concrete road map from the moment you are assigned to the day of committee.
Map your assigned country's relevant policies, alliances and past UN votes. Sources: UN documents, the country's foreign-ministry statements, reliable news.
Know your country's policy cold.Pour your research into a one-page formal document; it becomes the draft of your first speech and sharpens your thinking.
Your paper is your first speech in disguise.Memorise the conference's procedure and the core motion/point phrases; you will feel no procedural stress on day one.
Memorise a handful of key phrases.Build clear 60-90 second speeches; keep your opening and a few transition sentences ready. Fluency comes with practice.
Rehearse aloud, not in your head.A concrete plan might look like this: two weeks out, finish your country and topic research; one week out, write the position paper and prepare two or three possible solution mechanisms; a few days out, read the Rules of Procedure and memorise the motion phrases; on the eve of the conference, rehearse your opening speech aloud and prepare short answers to likely Points of Information. This rhythm largely removes the uncertainty of the first day.
MUN's language is academic and formal; strengthening your B2+ grammar and vocabulary base with the General English module makes speaking and drafting noticeably easier. Formulaic verbs, formal connectors and courtesy expressions are directly useful in MUN.
