World Schools (WSDC), Dünya Okullar Münazara Şampiyonası'nın (World Schools Debating Championships) formatıdır ve British Parliamentary ile birlikte liseler arasında en yaygın öğretilen sistemdir. İki takım — her biri üç konuşmacı — bir öneriyi (Proposition) savunur ve karşı çıkar (Opposition). WSDC'yi ayıran üç imza vardır: bazı motion'lar haftalar önce verilir (hazırlıklı), bazıları tartışmadan yaklaşık bir saat önce verilir (doğaçlama); her takım sonda kısa bir reply speech yapar; ve yargılama açıkça ağırlıklıdır — Content %40, Style %40, Strategy %20. Bu rehber formatın yapısını, her konuşmacının rolünü, çürütme ve reply mantığını, POI'yi, yargılama ölçütlerini ve hazırlık planını adım adım ele alır.
World Schools (WSDC) is the format of the World Schools Debating Championships and, alongside British Parliamentary, the most widely taught school debating system. Two teams — each with three speakers — propose a motion (Proposition) and oppose it (Opposition). Three features set WSDC apart: some motions are released weeks in advance (prepared) while others are given about an hour before the round (impromptu); each team delivers a short reply speech at the end; and judging is openly weighted — Content 40%, Style 40%, Strategy 20%. This guide walks through the structure, each speaker's role, rebuttal and reply logic, Points of Information, the judging criteria, and a step-by-step preparation plan.
World Schools was developed for the World Schools Debating Championships, where national teams compete, and has since become the shared language of school debate worldwide. Two teams face off: Proposition (which defends the motion) and Opposition (which argues against it). Each team has three speakers, and the debate has a clear, audience-friendly structure — accessible for beginners, yet fiercely competitive at the top level.
WSDC is a global format because it is countries, not single schools, that compete: each nation fields a team, and motions are designed to be fair to students from many first languages. For that reason the format avoids heavy technical jargon and rewards persuasion, clarity and style. The same rules are now used across national school championships and school leagues in dozens of countries.
WSDC has three signatures: some motions are announced in advance, letting teams research deeply; others are impromptu, given about an hour before the round. Every round closes with a reply speech. And judges split the score into Content, Style and Strategy. Together these three features make the format a unique workout for both thinking and language.
The format was first held in 1988 and has since become a championship staged each year in a different host country. High-school teams from dozens of nations take part; motions are drawn from global issues and designed to be fair to native and non-native English speakers alike. This universality has made WSDC the most widely taught international debating format in schools.
Her takımda üç konuşmacı sırayla substantive (asıl) konuşmalarını yapar; taraflar birbirini izler.
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1. Prop | 8 dk | |
| 2 | 1. Opp | 8 dk | |
| 3 | 2. Prop | 8 dk | |
| 4 | 2. Opp | 8 dk | |
| 5 | 3. Prop | 8 dk | |
| 6 | 3. Opp | 8 dk | |
| Reply | Opp Reply | 4 dk | |
| Reply | Prop Reply | 4 dk |
Sıralamada iki kritik ayrıntı vardır. Birincisi: asıl konuşmalarda taraflar dönüşümlü konuşur (Prop, Opp, Prop, Opp…), böylece her argüman anında yanıtlanabilir.
Each team's three speakers deliver their substantive (main) speeches in turn, with the sides alternating. After all six main speeches, each team closes with a reply speech. Substantive speeches are typically 8 minutes, and the reply speech is half that (4 minutes).
| Order | Proposition | Opposition | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1st Prop | 8 min | |
| 2 | 1st Opp | 8 min | |
| 3 | 2nd Prop | 8 min | |
| 4 | 2nd Opp | 8 min | |
| 5 | 3rd Prop | 8 min | |
| 6 | 3rd Opp | 8 min | |
| Reply | Opp Reply | 4 min | |
| Reply | Prop Reply | 4 min |
Two details in the order matter. First, the main speeches alternate between sides (Prop, Opp, Prop, Opp…), so every argument can be answered immediately. Second, the reply order is reversed — Opposition replies first, then Proposition. This gives the side that opened the debate (Proposition) both the first and the last word, framing the whole round.
The reply is delivered by the team's first or second speaker; the third speaker may not give it. On timing, speakers usually have a 30-second grace period; anything beyond that is not scored. The timekeeper signals at set moments — typically the end of the first minute and the start of the last minute (the protected time when POIs are closed) and when time expires.
Besides the speakers, a WSDC round has a chair (moderator), a timekeeper, and one or more adjudicators (judges). The chair opens the round, invites speakers in turn and keeps order; the timekeeper tracks time and signals with knocks. At larger tournaments a panel of several judges votes, and the majority decision determines the winner.
In WSDC every speaker has a defined job, and the roles complement one another. The table below summarises all seven roles — three main speakers per side plus the reply — and what each must do.
| Role | Core job |
|---|---|
| 1st Proposition | Reasonably defines the motion, sets the scope of the debate, states the team line, and builds the team's first (usually strongest) two arguments. |
| 1st Opposition | Accepts the definition or (rarely, with good cause) challenges it; delivers the first rebuttal to Prop's case and opens Opposition's stance and first arguments. |
| 2nd Proposition | Focuses on rebutting Opposition, deepens the team's case, and may add one new argument. This is the "clash" centre of the debate. |
| 2nd Opposition | The mirror image: systematically rebuts Proposition, strengthens the team's own case, and turns the clash in the team's favour. |
| 3rd Proposition | Mainly rebuttal and consolidation; reduces the debate to the key clashes and shows why the side wins. Usually brings no new major argument. |
| 3rd Opposition | The same consolidating job; as the last main speech, it frames the whole debate in Opposition's favour. |
| Reply | Delivered by the team's 1st or 2nd speaker: a biased summary of the debate that contains no new arguments. |
Third speakers do almost nothing but rebut and compare. Opening a new independent argument at this stage is generally treated as invalid — the other side has no chance to answer it, so the judge gives it no credit. Adding new examples or explanation to existing arguments is fine.
The roles are functions, not rigid moulds: the real aim is to build the team's case together. Even so, each speaker's centre of gravity differs — firsts build, seconds defend and grow, thirds consolidate. This spread ensures the right job is done at each stage of the debate and prevents time from being wasted.
Güçlü konuşmacılar çatışmayı katmanlar: “Karşı tarafın iddiası yanlış; even if doğru olsaydı bile, bizim sonucumuz daha ağır basıyor.”
İyi debatecı'lar karşı tarafı dinlerken not tutar (“flowing”): her argümanı başlıkla yazar, yanına yanıtını ekler.
Rebuttal is the heart of WSDC and especially the main job of the second speakers. Effective rebuttal is not restating the opposing argument and saying "I disagree"; it is showing which step of the argument collapses. An argument has a claim, a warrant and an impact — you target one of them.
"Even if the claim is true, the logic linking it to the impact is broken" — the strongest rebuttal usually targets the warrant.
"It may be true, but its effect is small" — even if the argument survives, you lower its weight in the debate.
A concrete counter-example or data point weakens the generalisation and strengthens your own case.
After rebutting, remind the judge why your own argument still stands — rebuttal always ends with comparison.
Clash is the point where the two sides meet directly on the same issue. A good debate is not scattered; it gathers around two or three clear clashes (for example "individual freedom", "public good", "feasibility"). Structured rebuttal names these headings, shows why you win each one, and makes the judge's decision easy.
Strong speakers layer the clash: "The other side's claim is wrong; even if it were true, our impact still outweighs." This keeps your argument alive even if a single rebuttal fails.
Rebuttal is also a listening skill. Good debaters take notes as they listen to the other side ("flowing"): they write each argument as a heading and add their response beside it. That way no important claim goes unanswered and the debate becomes genuinely responsive — answering what is actually said in the moment, rather than reading a pre-written script, is what WSDC rewards.
The reply speech is what sets WSDC apart from many other formats. It runs half the length of a main speech (usually 4 minutes) and is delivered by the team's 1st or 2nd speaker — not the 3rd. In the reply the order reverses: Opposition first, then Proposition. That way Proposition speaks both first and last in the debate.
The purpose of the reply is a biased summary: to tell the debate from the judge's point of view, in your own team's favour. A good reply does not repeat the whole speech; it reduces the debate to two or three key clashes and, on each, says "we showed this, they could not answer." In other words the reply is a comparative weighing exercise: it shows which side has the heavier, better-defended arguments.
No new arguments may be opened in the reply; if they are, the judge gives no credit. Also, no POIs are offered during reply speeches. The reply only summarises and compares what has already been said.
A practical reply pattern: (1) frame in one sentence what the debate was about; (2) take the first clash and show comparatively why you win it; (3) handle the second (and if needed third) clash the same way; (4) close short and strong, leaving one clear final line in the judge's memory. The reply is the last thing the judge hears before deciding, which is why it is the speech that most needs rehearsing.
During substantive speeches the opposing team may offer a Point of Information — a short question or objection of up to about 15 seconds. To offer one, a speaker stands and asks to be heard with "Point of information?" or similar; the person speaking is free to accept or decline.
Timing is critical: POIs may be offered only outside the first and last minute of a speech — that is, outside the protected time. The first minute is protected so the speaker can set up the case, the last minute so they can conclude. There are no POIs in reply speeches.
Pick a short, sharp question that puts the speaker under pressure; be persistent but respectful — badgering costs marks.
Take a few POIs across the round; declining them all looks disengaged. Accepting and answering strongly shows command.
Well-handled POIs feed both the Style and Strategy scores: accepting shows engagement and confidence, and answering well shows intellectual command. Taking no POIs — or accepting one and answering weakly — lowers the score instead.
A sample POI: as the speaker says "this policy benefits everyone," the other side stands and asks, "What about small businesses that cannot absorb the cost?" A good speaker accepts it, answers briefly, and returns to their own line; that exchange shows command.
|---|---|---|---|
| Content | %40 (/40) | Argüman gücü, mantık, kanıt, çürütme kalitesi. | Sağlam gerekçe, ilişkili örnek, ikna edici çürütme. |
| Style | %40 (/40) | Sunum: ses, tempo, beden dili, dil akıcılığı. | Netlik, tonlama, göz teması, özgüven, izleyiciyle bağ. |
| Strategy | %20 (/20) | Yapı, zaman yönetimi, tartışmaya uygunluk. | Doğru anda doğru vurgu, net işaretleme, önceliklendirme. |
WSDC's most recognisable feature is its clear, weighted marking scheme. Each main speech is scored under three headings and totalled out of 100; the reply speech is marked at half that (out of 50).
| Criterion | Weight | What it measures | What it rewards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Content | 40% (/40) | Argument strength, logic, evidence, quality of rebuttal. | Sound warrants, relevant examples, convincing refutation. |
| Style | 40% (/40) | Delivery: voice, pace, body language, fluency. | Clarity, intonation, eye contact, confidence, connection with the audience. |
| Strategy | 20% (/20) | Structure, time management, relevance to the debate. | The right emphasis at the right moment, clear signposting, prioritisation. |
In practice most speeches cluster in the middle band: an average main speech scores around 70/100, with very strong speeches above and weak ones below. Judges rarely award extreme marks (very low or very high), which keeps speeches of different kinds comparable.
Content and Style carry equal weight — meaning that in WSDC how you say it matters as much as what you say. Why? Because the format measures persuasion between teams from many first languages; and in the real world it is not the best idea but the best-communicated idea that wins. This makes the format especially valuable for language learning: fluency, intonation and clarity convert directly into competition points.
To decide the winner, the judge adds up all the speech scores; the team with the higher total wins. This can, rarely, produce a "low-point win": even if the single best speaker is on one team, the other team's three speakers together may reach a higher total. This shows once more why WSDC is a team game.
With Style worth 40% of the score, delivery is far too important to leave to chance. The good news: style is a learnable skill. The five areas below give the fastest gains.
A monotone is the most common way to lose marks. Bring out key sentences with your voice, and leave a short pause before an important word.
Speaking too fast is almost a penalty in WSDC; if the judge cannot follow you, the idea earns no marks. Choose a clear, controlled speed.
Transitions like "I have two arguments; first… second…" make it easy for the judge to take notes and help both Style and Strategy.
Engage the judge with eye contact rather than burying yourself in notes; short bullet notes beat a full script.
Body language is part of the picture too: stand tall, use your hands for meaningful gestures, and avoid rocking in place. Fluency is the most valuable investment, especially for non-native speakers: connectives, set transition phrases and correct intonation make the same argument far more convincing.
Record your speeches and listen back: where did you speed up, where were you monotone, which connectives do you overuse? Even ten minutes of daily read-aloud practice for a week visibly improves intonation.
Good news for non-native speakers: judges do not penalise accent. What matters is intelligibility, fluency and persuasion; a clear, confident delivery earns marks, not a flawless accent. So it is smarter to prioritise intonation, emphasis and pace over perfect pronunciation.
WSDC is a team game, not an individual one. The three speakers build a single case; a good team sounds like one argument, not a collection of individuals. This rests on two things: a consistent team line and a clear division of labour.
The team line is the one-sentence main thesis that all three speakers defend. If the first speaker says one thing and the second defends something that contradicts it, the other side seizes on the contradiction and the case collapses. So in prep the team first agrees on a shared line, then divides the arguments.
| Speaker | Function within the team |
|---|---|
| 1st | Lays the ground: definition, team line, main arguments. |
| 2nd | Defends and grows the case: mostly rebuttal + deepening. |
| 3rd | Consolidates and compares: frames the clashes in the team's favour. |
Division of labour also means arguments are not repeated: each speaker adds a new layer to the case. An internal signalling system (time cards, shared notes with POI ideas) enables silent coordination during the round. The best teams plan from the start who will take which clash.
Team spirit starts in the prep room: good teams frame the motion together, identify the key clashes in advance and decide who will carry which argument. During the round the quiet collaboration continues: while one speaker is up, the other two take notes, flag POI opportunities and pass short notes to the next speaker.
WSDC rounds are split between two motion types, and each demands different skills. A good team trains to be comfortable with both.
Prepared motions are announced weeks in advance of the tournament. Teams research deeply, gather evidence, prepare expert views and statistics, and work through likely counter-arguments beforehand. Here the edge comes from the depth of preparation: whoever readies the best examples, the strongest comparisons, and case plans for both sides pulls ahead.
Impromptu motions are given about an hour before the round; during that prep time the internet and outside help are banned — only the team's own knowledge and limited printed material may be used. Here the edge comes from general knowledge, the ability to build a case quickly, and division of labour within the team.
| Prepared | Impromptu | |
|---|---|---|
| Prep time | Weeks | ~1 hour |
| Internet/material | Allowed | Restricted / banned |
| What it rewards | Research depth, evidence | General knowledge, speed, composure |
| Key to success | Prepared case blocks | Fast team brainstorming |
This is why a serious WSDC team follows current affairs regularly: building a general knowledge base across politics, economics, the environment, technology and ethics makes all the difference in impromptu rounds.
A practical balance: for prepared motions, teams build "case files" for both sides, because which side they speak on is revealed only just before the round. For impromptu motions, splitting the limited time into three is effective: quick brainstorming, selecting arguments, and a short rehearsal.
World Schools motion'ları birkaç kalıpla gelir. En yaygınları: This House would… (bir politika önerir), This House believes that… (bir değer/inanış savunur), This House regrets…
World Schools motions come in a few templates. The most common are: This House would… (proposes a policy), This House believes that… (defends a value or belief), This House regrets… (critically evaluates a phenomenon) and This House supports…. The template determines whether the debate is a policy or a value debate and shapes the burden of proof.
| Template | Type | Prop's job |
|---|---|---|
| THW… | Policy | Show why an action/policy should be implemented. |
| THBT… | Value/analysis | Defend that a proposition is true or justified. |
| THR… | Evaluation | Show that a trend/phenomenon is harmful. |
Proposition's first speaker reasonably defines the motion and sets the scope of the debate. A good definition is neither too broad (indefensible) nor too narrow (unfair to the other side — the distortion known as "squirreling"). Its aim is to reflect how an ordinary, reasonable reader would understand the motion.
Proposition also states a team line: the one-sentence thesis all three speakers defend. Opposition sets its own counter-line. Rather than fighting over the definition, accepting it and building a stronger case on the merits usually pays off more in WSDC — judges reward substantive debate over technical games. A definition is challenged only if it is genuinely unfair or absurd.
Good motions are balanced: they leave defensible ground for both sides. So in prep you must think ahead not only about your own side but about the opponent's strongest arguments — asking "what will the other side say?" is the fastest way to stress-test your own case.
|---|---|---|
| Claim (iddia) | Savunduğun önerme. | “Standart sınavlar öğrenmeyi zayıflatır.” |
The skeleton of an argument is universal: claim → warrant → impact. In WSDC, Content's 40% weight is tied directly to how solidly the warrant in particular is built.
| Part | What it does | Example ("Abolish exams") |
|---|---|---|
| Claim | The proposition you defend. | "Standardised exams weaken learning." |
| Warrant | The logic explaining why the claim is true. | "Because exam-focused cramming overshadows deep understanding; students study for the grade, not the topic." |
| Impact | Why it matters; its weight in the debate. | "So skills erode over the long run, defeating even the exam's own aim of measuring ability." |
Examples and evidence strengthen the warrant — but an example alone is not an argument. Saying "Finland did X" is not enough; you must tie that example to the logic chain and show why it supports your claim. The best examples are concrete, relevant and measurable; vague generalisations ("research shows…") are weak.
For each argument, ask yourself: "Why?" (is there a warrant?) and "So what?" (is the impact clear?). If you cannot answer both, the argument is not ready yet.
Finally, prioritise your arguments: developing your two or three strongest in depth beats skimming five weak ones. In WSDC, depth earns more than breadth.
Build rebuttal into your case: the strongest speakers pre-empt the opponent's likely objection while presenting their own argument ("Some may say X; but…"). This "pre-emptive rebuttal" helps both Content and Strategy and makes your argument more resilient.
Aynı hatalar defalarca puan kaybettirir. Aşağıdaki liste, WSDC yargıçlarının en sık not ettiği kusurları ve hızlı çözümlerini toplar.
The same mistakes cost marks again and again. The list below gathers the flaws WSDC judges note most often, with quick fixes.
1. Neglecting Style: Style is also 40%; a monotone or over-fast delivery costs marks directly. 2. Losing the team line: if the three speakers pull in different directions the case contradicts itself and collapses. 3. New arguments in the reply: forbidden; the reply is only summary and weighing. 4. Taking no POIs: disengagement lowers both Style and Strategy. 5. Mistaking an example for an argument and skipping the warrant: the "Why?" goes unanswered. 6. Avoiding rebuttal: reading only your own arguments and ignoring the other side hands the debate to them.
Two more common traps: poor time management (cutting the last argument short, or finishing with time to spare) and speaking far too fast ("spreading") — unlike some other formats, WSDC does not reward it; if the judge cannot follow, the idea is ignored. Finally, picking an unnecessary definition fight loses time and goodwill; unless the definition is genuinely unfair, arguing on the merits pays off more.

Progressing in WSDC requires regular, balanced practice: content (arguments, general knowledge), style (delivery) and team coordination alike. The four steps below can be turned into a practical weekly plan.
For each motion, first fix the one-sentence shared thesis; then split the arguments across the three speakers. No repetition, no contradiction.
Earn the 40% weight: work deliberately on intonation, pauses, eye contact and clear English; record your speeches and listen back.
Internalise the pattern "the other side said X; it is wrong because…; therefore our argument stands."
The reply is the last voice the judge hears when deciding; make it clear and biased across two or three clashes.
Add a general-knowledge routine: read a few current issues each week (politics, economics, environment, technology, ethics) and build two or three arguments for each in your head. This habit makes all the difference in impromptu rounds. Because of the Style weighting, WSDC directly rewards fluent English; working on connectives, intonation and clarity with the General English module and the topic guides converts straight into points.
