Debate formats are separate games in which the same idea is argued under different rules: how many teams compete, how many people speak, for how many minutes, what the judges reward — all change with the format. This guide compares end to end the three main formats of the school and university world: World Schools (WSDC), the high-school championship format of international schools; ESDC (in this guide the Eurasian Schools Debating Championship, Istanbul), a school tournament that runs in the WSDC style; and British Parliamentary (BP), the four-team format of the university world and the World Championship (WUDC). With a big comparison table, a section for each format, how the same motion is played differently across the three, judging and style differences, and a "which format should I choose?" road map for a student in Turkey.
Önce büyük karşılaştırma tablosuna göz atın; ardından her formatın kendi bölümünü okuyun.
Debate is not a single game but a family of games in which the same question is played under different rules. The same motion is won with a completely different strategy depending on the format: how many people speak, for how many minutes, what the judges reward and who your opponent is all change from format to format. So a good debater knows not the language first but the format they are playing. This guide compares end to end the three formats you will meet most in the school and university world — World Schools (WSDC), ESDC and British Parliamentary (BP).
Let us draw a rough map. World Schools (WSDC) is the format used by international schools and high-school national teams at the World Schools Debating Championships; it is known for two three-member teams, long speeches and a strong emphasis on style. ESDC — in this guide the Eurasian Schools Debating Championship (Robert College, Istanbul) — is a schools-circuit tournament that runs in the WSDC style; it is one of the most accessible international experiences for a high-school student from Turkey. British Parliamentary (BP) is the format of the university world and the World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC): four teams, eight speakers and a ranking from 1st to 4th.
Placing these three side by side is not just academic curiosity but a practical gain. The rebuttal, evidence use and clash-weighing you learn in one format transfer largely to another; but each format has its own traps. In WSDC style and the reply speech are decisive, while in BP you must beat even the team on your own side and bring an original extension. Knowing these differences in advance protects you from the mistake of applying the right strategy in the wrong format.
First glance at the big comparison table; then read each format's own section. The section showing how the same motion is played across the three formats connects theory to practice. At the end, the "which format should I choose?" section offers a road map for a student in Turkey.
Note: the exact rules of debate formats can vary with small differences by the governing body and the year. Especially in school-circuit tournaments, the speaker count, timings and judging criteria can shift from tournament to tournament; so before entering a tournament, always read that tournament's official rulebook. This guide teaches the general structure and logic, not the exact numbers of a single tournament.

Yukarıdaki ESDC değerleri, WSDC üslubuyla işleyen Eurasian Schools Debating Championship'i temel alır.
The table below gives the outline of the three formats at a glance. The WSDC and BP values are well documented and stable; the ESDC row is based on a schools-circuit tournament that runs in the WSDC style (the Eurasian Schools Debating Championship) and therefore overlaps largely with WSDC — but always confirm the exact values from the tournament's official source.

The abbreviation ESDC can point to different tournaments at different bodies, and the speaker count, timings and judging rules of school-circuit tournaments vary by organiser. The ESDC values above are based on the Eurasian Schools Debating Championship, which runs in the WSDC style. Always confirm the exact rules (speaker count, timings, judging) from the relevant tournament's official rulebook; do not memorise the values here as fixed fact.
Three big differences emerge from the table: (1) in BP a debate has four teams, not two, so the number of opponents and the strategy are entirely different; (2) WSDC and ESDC have a reply (summary) speech, BP does not; (3) in BP the judge ranks the teams (1–4), while in WSDC/ESDC a clear winner/loser is declared. These three differences form the core of the sections below.
World Schools (WSDC), adını her yıl düzenlenen World Schools Debating Championships turnuvasından alır ve bugün lise düzeyinde en yaygın uluslararası formattır. Her takım üç konuşmacıdan oluşur; üç konuşmacı da sırayla birer asli konuşma (8 dakika) yapar, ardından her taraf birer reply (özet) konuşması (4 dakika) verir.
WSDC'nin ayrıntılı yapısı için ayrı World Schools rehberimize bakabilirsiniz.
WSDC neden BP'ye kıyasla "uzun" hissettirir?
World Schools (WSDC) takes its name from the annual World Schools Debating Championships and is today the most widespread international format at high-school level. A debate has two teams: the Proposition, which defends the motion, and the Opposition, which opposes it. Each team has three speakers; all three give one substantive speech (8 minutes) in turn, after which each side gives one reply (summary) speech (4 minutes). The reply is given by the team's first or second speaker — not the third — and the last word usually stays with the proposition.
WSDC's signature is two things. First, the format uses a mixed preparation model: some motions are announced in advance (prepared) and teams research for days; others are announced at the tournament with about an hour of short prep (impromptu). Second, the judge scores speeches on three axes: Style 40%, Content 40%, Strategy 20%. This weighting makes WSDC a format that values "how you say it" as much as "what you say"; fluent, persuasive, listenable speaking really scores here.
During a speech, the opposing side may offer Points of Information (POI) outside the first and last minute: a short question or objection to try to get the floor. The speaker may refuse them but is expected to take at least one or two POIs during the speech; taking none can be read as "avoiding engagement with the argument". This mechanism adds live interaction inside long speeches and tests listening-and-responding skill. For WSDC's detailed structure, see our separate World Schools guide.
Why does WSDC feel "long" compared with BP? Because eight-minute speeches and a reply give teams room to develop arguments in depth, weave in examples and respond to the other side at length. This rewards teams that structure their case well and manage time across three speakers; a WSDC round is less a sprint of ideas than a sustained, built-up argument that the reply speech crowns.
In this guide, ESDC refers to the Eurasian Schools Debating Championship: an international schools tournament in Istanbul, organised entirely by high-school students of the Robert College Debate Society. ESDC's most important feature is that it is less a separate "format" than a tournament that runs in the WSDC style. That is, the structure is largely the same as WSDC: two three-member teams, eight-minute substantive speeches and a four-minute reply speech, with the last word staying with the Proposition.
The tournament architecture is typical too: teams play several preliminary rounds (with power pairing), and the teams with the highest wins and speaker points advance to elimination rounds (for example the last sixteen, quarter/semi-finals). The POI rules, judging philosophy and motion style follow the WSDC tradition; so a team prepared for World Schools is largely ready for ESDC too. For a high-school student from Turkey, ESDC is one of the most accessible ways to experience WSDC in an international hall, with peers from different parts of the world.
The abbreviation "ESDC" can point to different school tournaments in different regions (Eurasian / European school circuits), and these tournaments' speaker count, timings, round structure and judging model vary by organiser and year. The information in this section is based on the published WSDC-style structure of the Eurasian Schools Debating Championship. Always confirm the exact rules (especially speaker count, timings and judging criteria) of the tournament you plan to enter from its current official rulebook; do not treat the values here as the single truth.
In short: think of ESDC not as a separate body of rules but as a stage where WSDC skills are applied. A student who studies WSDC well will feel no format shock at ESDC; the real difference is the tournament's atmosphere, motion pool and level of opponents. Even so, reading each tournament's own rulebook is essential to catch small differences in timing or judging.
British Parliamentary (BP) is the format of university debating and the World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC); it takes its name from the British parliamentary tradition. Its biggest difference is here: a debate is contested by four teams, not two, and each team has two speakers, so there are eight speakers on the floor in total. The four teams are split into two "benches": on the government side Opening Government (OG) and Closing Government (CG), on the opposition side Opening Opposition (OO) and Closing Opposition (CO).
Each speaker speaks for 7 minutes; speeches alternate between the two benches, and the debate ends once all eight are done. There is no reply speech. BP's most challenging feature is that the judge ranks the teams from 1st to 4th rather than as winner/loser. This has a vital consequence: you must beat not only the opposing bench but the other team on your own bench too. For example, Closing Government wants to finish ahead of Opening Government, which is on the same side.
The way to do this is the extension: the closing teams (CG/CO) must bring a new argument, frame or layer of analysis that the opening teams did not say; original contribution, not repetition, earns points. The motion is announced just before the debate and teams are given about 15 minutes of prep — so BP is an entirely impromptu format that rewards broad general knowledge, fast idea generation and sharp analysis. The POI rule works on the same logic as in WSDC (first and last minute protected). For detail, see our British Parliamentary guide.
|---|---|---|
| Politika (policy) | This House would ban... | Somut bir eylem/politika yapılmalı mı? |
| Değer/inanç (value) | This House believes that... | Bir yargı/değer savunulabilir mi? |
| Analiz/karakterizasyon | This House regrets... / prefers...
All three formats traditionally write the motion with the "This House..." template — meaning "This Assembly...", a formula from the British parliamentary tradition. But the type and difficulty of the motion tend to differ by format; knowing this steers your preparation.
| Motion type | Template | What it asks |
|---|---|---|
| Policy | This House would ban... | Should a concrete action/policy be taken? |
| Value/belief | This House believes that... | Can a judgement/value be defended? |
| Analysis/characterisation | This House regrets... / prefers... | Evaluate a phenomenon or choose between two things. |
The general tendency is this: WSDC and ESDC motions are built for high-school level and curriculum/current-affairs knowledge; in prepared rounds deeper, more specific topics can appear because the team has a research opportunity. BP motions, being fully impromptu, spread across broad general knowledge, philosophy, politics, economics and ethics; they are designed to be understood and debated in 15 minutes. In all three formats, correctly defining the motion and, where needed, setting a model is the proposing side's first job.
When the motion arrives, first identify its type (policy or value?), then define the key words and find the "heart" of the debate (the real clash). In WSDC prepared rounds you do this weeks ahead; in BP within 15 minutes. A good definition will not win it for you, but a bad definition easily loses it.
|---|---|---|
| WSDC / ESDC | 1. konuşmacı | Çerçeve ve tanımları kurar, takımın ana argümanlarını açar. |
| 2. konuşmacı | Argümanları derinleştirir, karşı tarafı çürütür. | |
| 3. konuşmacı (whip) | Çatışmayı özetler, yeni argüman getirmez; takım lehine tartar. | |
| Reply (1. ya da 2.) | 4 dakikada tüm maçı takımın gözünden özetler. | |
| BP | OG (Prime Minister + Deputy) | Motion'ı tanımlar ve modeli kurar; hükümet davasını açar. |
| OO (Leader + Deputy) | Muhalefeti başlatır; hükümet çerçevesine ilk yanıt. | |
| CG (Member + Whip) | Yeni bir extension getirir; hükümet davasını yeni katmanla ileri taşır. | |
| CO (Member + Whip) | Muhalefete özgün extension katar; kapanış whip'i tartışmayı toparlar. |
The most concrete difference between the formats is each speaker's role. In WSDC/ESDC the three speakers' jobs are relatively clear; in BP each of the eight speakers carries a different task and your position determines your strategy.
| Format | Speaker | Task |
|---|---|---|
| WSDC / ESDC | 1st speaker | Sets the frame and definitions, opens the team's main arguments. |
| 2nd speaker | Deepens arguments, rebuts the other side. | |
| 3rd speaker (whip) | Summarises the clash, brings no new argument; weighs it for the team. | |
| Reply (1st or 2nd) | Summarises the whole debate through the team's eyes in 4 minutes. | |
| BP | OG (Prime Minister + Deputy) | Defines the motion and sets the model; opens the government case. |
| OO (Leader + Deputy) | Starts the opposition; first response to the government frame. | |
| CG (Member + Whip) | Brings a new extension; carries the government case forward with a new layer. | |
| CO (Member + Whip) | Adds an original extension to opposition; the closing whip pulls the debate together. |
The point to note: in WSDC/ESDC the third speaker (whip) cannot bring a new argument; their job is to clarify the existing clash in the team's favour. In BP, while the closing teams' whip pulls things together, a closing team's real weapon is the extension brought by the member speaker. So the "no new argument" rule applies to the third speaker in WSDC, whereas in BP the closing teams, on the contrary, must bring new contribution.
In WSDC allocate team roles in advance: let your strongest rebutter be second and your calmest summariser be whip/reply. In BP, change strategy on the spot according to the position drawn (OG/OO/CG/CO) — if you are opening, set a clear frame; if you are closing, plan a strong extension.
The formats also diverge in the preparation model before the speech, and this directly determines your study method. WSDC/ESDC use a mixed model: some motions are announced weeks ahead (prepared) and teams get to research deeply, gather evidence and pre-write speeches; in other rounds the motion is announced at the tournament with about an hour of short prep (impromptu). BP is entirely impromptu: the motion is announced just before the debate and only 15 minutes of prep is given. This turns BP into a test of fast thinking, broad general knowledge and generating arguments on the spot.
Preparing for WSDC/ESDC needs both research discipline for prepared motions and fast case-building practice for impromptu. Preparing for BP is decided not by research but by broad reading and the reflex of setting a clear frame in 15 minutes.
All three formats share the Points of Information (POI) mechanism and its logic is almost the same: during a speech the opposing side stands to offer a short question or objection outside the first and last minute of the speech. The speaker may accept or refuse the POI; the first and last minute are "protected", meaning no POI may be offered then. This shared rule is the skill that transfers most easily among the three formats: a student who learns to give and take POIs in one format is comfortable in another.
As a speaker, take one or two POIs at a moment that will not break your flow; taking none reads as avoidance, taking too many wastes time. When giving a POI be short and sharp (one sentence); your aim is to ask a question that corners the opponent or to show the judge a weak point. Because WSDC has a style score, handling POIs gracefully earns extra value.
Formats are not just a single debate; each lives inside a tournament architecture, and that architecture sets your goals. The general skeleton is similar in all three formats: several preliminary rounds (prelims), then elimination rounds that the most successful advance into.
In school tournaments like WSDC and ESDC, teams play several prelim rounds with power pairing; the teams with the highest wins and speaker points break into the elimination rounds — for example the last sixteen (octofinals), quarter- and semi-finals. From there single-elimination begins: the loser is out. BP tournaments follow a similar logic but are ranking-based: in each prelim round teams are placed 1st to 4th, the highest by accumulated team points break, and the same four-team structure continues in the elimination rounds.
Break means advancing from the prelims into the elimination rounds. In WSDC/ESDC wins + speaker points decide it; in BP the accumulated ranking points. Set your goal realistically at a tournament: the first goal is usually to break, the next to progress through the elimination rounds.
This structure explains why consistency is worth more than a single brilliant debate: a team that steadily gathers points in the prelims breaks more easily than one that is great in one round and falls apart in the others. Especially in BP, since each round brings a 1–4 ranking, regularly coming 1st or 2nd is far healthier than coming 1st once and then dropping to 4ths. Exact round counts, break quotas and elimination structure vary by tournament; always confirm from the official rulebook.
Teoriyi somutlaştırmak için tek bir motion alalım: "This House would ban private cars in city centres." (Bu Meclis, şehir merkezlerinde özel araçları yasaklardı.) Aynı önerme, üç formatta bambaşka biçimde oynanır.
İki takım karşı karşıya. Proposition'ın 1. konuşmacısı yasağı tanımlar (hangi merkezler, hangi istisnalar) ve ana davayı kurar: "We will show cleaner air, fewer deaths and revived public space." 2. konuşmacı hava kirliliği ve trafik verisini derinleştirip muhalefeti çürütür; 3. konuşmacı (whip) çatışmayı özetler, yeni argüman getirmez. Reply, 4 dakikada maçı takım gözünden tartar. Kazanan: çatışmayı dengede kazanan ve üslup+içerik+strateji toplamında öne çıkan taraf.
Dört takım. OG motion'ı tanımlar ve modeli kurar (ör. büyük şehir merkezlerinde, engelli/acil istisnalarıyla). OO ilk yanıtı verir. CG tekrara düşmeden yeni bir extension getirmek zorundadır — ör. düşük gelirli mahallelerde eşitlik etkisi ya da yerel ekonomi analizi: "Our extension: who actually benefits when the centre is car-free?"
To make the theory concrete, take a single motion: "This House would ban private cars in city centres." The same motion is played in completely different ways across the three formats.
Two teams face off. The Proposition's 1st speaker defines the ban (which centres, which exemptions) and sets the main case: "We will show cleaner air, fewer deaths and revived public space." The 2nd speaker deepens the pollution and traffic data and rebuts the opposition; the 3rd speaker (whip) summarises the clash, bringing no new argument. The reply weighs the debate through the team's eyes in 4 minutes. Winner: the side that wins the clash on balance and comes out ahead on style + content + strategy.
Four teams. OG defines the motion and sets the model (e.g. in major city centres, with disability/emergency exemptions). OO gives the first response. CG must bring a new extension without repeating — e.g. an equity impact on low-income neighbourhoods or a local-economy analysis: "Our extension: who actually benefits when the centre is car-free?" CO adds an original layer to the opposition. Winner: the team that makes the most original and impactful contribution — coming 1st by beating even the team on its own bench.
The difference is striking. In WSDC/ESDC there is one question: "did the Proposition or the Opposition debate better?" In BP four separate questions interlock: each team must be better than both the opposing bench and its partner on its own bench. So in BP a closing team cannot rise without bringing a new angle (extension), even if the opening team already built a strong case.
The same motion is played in WSDC/ESDC as a clash of two sides, and in BP as a contribution race among four teams. Even if your argument is the same, how you position it changes completely with the format.
The meaning of winning a debate changes with the format; so the same speech may shine in one format and fall short in another. The table below summarises what the judge rewards.
| Format | Winning decision | What the judge rewards |
|---|---|---|
| WSDC / ESDC | Clear winner/loser; speeches scored by style 40 / content 40 / strategy 20 | Persuasive style, solid content and smart time/argument management together |
| BP | Teams ranked 1st–4th; speakers also given scores | Original contribution and impact — especially the extension the closing teams bring |
The judge asks "which side won the clash?" but also takes style seriously (40%). So a solid argument is not enough; presenting it clearly, listenably and persuasively is also points. A strong counter-argument left unanswered loses the round; the whip clarifying the clash in the team's favour wins it.
The judge places each team from 1st to 4th; to come first you must beat both the opposing bench and the team on your own bench. So the point most often lost in BP is a lack of original contribution: a closing team that repeats what the opening team said cannot rise, however well it speaks. What wins is adding a new and impactful layer to the debate.
The practical upshot: when preparing for WSDC/ESDC, set aside separate time for style rehearsal (voice, pace, eye contact, fluency); when preparing for BP, make the question "what contribution to this debate can no one but me bring?" a reflex. Both formats want logical argument and good rebuttal; what makes the difference is which extra skill the judge rewards.
The good news: most debate skills transfer between formats. A student who learns rebuttal, evidence use, clash-weighing and POI handling in one format does not start from scratch in another. But there are things to relearn at each switch; knowing them in advance speeds the transition.
Building and rebutting arguments, using evidence/examples, weighing the clash through the judge's eyes, giving/taking POIs, time management, stage confidence and fluent English. These are fundamental in all three formats.
Forget the reply speech (none in BP), cut the speech from 8 to 7 minutes, learn the four-team dynamic and the extension logic, and get used to fully impromptu 15-minute prep.
Add the reply speech, give separate weight to the style score (40%), adopt the third speaker's "no new argument" rule, and build research discipline for prepared motions.
In short, moving between formats is not "learning from scratch" but a change of settings. The most common mistake is blindly carrying one format's habit into another: a speaker from BP neglecting style in WSDC, or someone from WSDC forgetting to bring an extension when on a closing team in BP. If you enter knowing these two traps, the second format settles far faster than the first.
For a student in Turkey, the choice of format depends largely on your age and your goal. The guidance below is a road map for the most common situations.
| Your situation | Recommended start | Why |
|---|---|---|
| I am a high-school student | WSDC (and ESDC tournaments) | WSDC is the common language of the school world; tournaments like ESDC offer accessible international experience in Istanbul. |
| I am a university student | BP | BP is the standard format of university clubs and WUDC; it is the format you will meet most throughout a debating career. |
| I am interested in MUN / academic events | WSDC base + BP | WSDC's structured rebuttal is a solid foundation for MUN and general argumentation. |
| I want to develop fast thinking and general knowledge | BP | Its fully impromptu structure and broad motion pool push fast idea generation. |
| Style and stage confidence are my priority | WSDC | The style score (40%) and long speeches directly reward persuasive speaking. |
If you are in high school, start with WSDC and set a tournament like ESDC as your first international goal. When you move to university you will naturally shift to BP — your WSDC foundation eases that transition. Knowing both formats keeps you comfortable in both the school and the university circuit.
Remember: there is no such thing as "the best format"; there is the format closest to your goal. Most experienced debaters come to know both worlds over time and use what they learn in one in the other. What matters is not getting stuck in a single format but strengthening the shared core — logical argument, good rebuttal and fluent English — everywhere. To develop this core, the General English module is a good start.
| Terim | Anlamı |
|---|---|
| Motion / This House... | Tartışılan önerme; genellikle "This House would..." kalıbıyla yazılır. |
| Proposition / Government | Motion'ı savunan taraf (WSDC'de Proposition, BP'de Government). |
| Opposition | Motion'a karşı çıkan taraf. |
| Points of Information (POI) | Konuşma sırasında rakibin sunduğu kısa soru/itiraz; ilk ve son dakika korumalı. |
| Reply speech | WSDC/ESDC'de maçın sonundaki 4 dakikalık özet; BP'de yoktur. |

WSDC is both a format and a world championship; ESDC in this guide refers to a school tournament that runs in the WSDC style (the Eurasian Schools Debating Championship, Istanbul). So ESDC is not a separate body of rules but a stage where the WSDC format is applied. Confirm the exact rules from the tournament's official rulebook.
Its four-team structure lets more teams compete in one debate, its fully impromptu nature rewards broad general knowledge, and because WUDC (the World Universities Debating Championship) uses BP, university clubs gravitate to this format too.
In WSDC/ESDC the reply is given by the team's first or second speaker — not the third (whip). It is about 4 minutes and contains a summary, not a new argument. BP has no reply speech.
Not compulsory but expected. In all three formats taking one or two POIs during your speech is looked on well; taking none can be read as avoiding engagement with the argument. The first and last minute are protected, and no POI may be offered then.
Not as hard as thought. Argument, rebuttal and POI skills transfer; the real adjustment is relearning the extension and four-team dynamic in BP, and the reply and style score in WSDC. Entering aware of these two traps speeds the switch.
At high-school level, WSDC-style tournaments (including ESDC in Istanbul) are an accessible start; at university, the BP circuit and WUDC can be targeted. Check each tournament's registration terms and rules from its official source.
