Gramer doğru olsa bile duruma uymayan bir cümle kulağı tırmalar. Aynı işlevi (örneğin bir rica) bir arkadaşa, bir öğretmene ve bir müşteriye farklı sözcüklerle iletirsin. Bu bölüm en sık kullanılan işlevleri ve her birinin resmiyet düzeyine göre hazır kalıplarını toplar.
Even when the grammar is correct, a sentence that doesn't fit the situation grates on the ear. You convey the same function (a request, say) to a friend, a teacher, and a client with different words. This section gathers the most commonly used functions and, for each, ready-made phrases arranged by level of formality.
Türkçede bir arkadaşa da öğretmene de "Bana yardım eder misin?" diyebiliriz; İngilizcede ise samimi Can you give me a hand? ile resmî I was wondering if you could help me arasında belirgin bir üslup farkı vardır. Bu sayfada en sık kullanılan işlevleri, her birinin resmiyet düzeyine göre hazır kalıplarını ve kibarlığın dilbilgisel araçlarını topluyoruz; böylece "doğru durumda doğru cümleyi" refleksle seçebilirsin.
A communicative function is the concept that describes what we do with language: making a request, offering, agreeing, objecting, apologizing, suggesting… While grammar determines how a sentence is built, function determines what it is for. A learner may speak with flawless grammar and yet seem rude, cold, or awkward when they choose the wrong function phrase. That is why, in real communication, functions matter at least as much as grammar.
The real difficulty for Turkish learners is that the same function requires different phrases in English depending on the addressee and the setting. In Turkish, we can say "Bana yardım eder misin?" to a friend and a teacher alike; in English, there is a clear difference in register between the casual Can you give me a hand? and the formal I was wondering if you could help me. On this page we gather the most commonly used functions, ready-made phrases for each by level of formality, and the grammatical tools of politeness; so that you can pick "the right sentence for the right situation" by reflex.
Dolaylı yapılar (Would you mind…, I was wondering…) mesafeyi ve saygıyı artırır.
Bu düzeyleri seçerken tek bir kural yeter: şüphedeysen bir üst düzeyi seç. Tanımadığın biriyle, bir üstünle ya da resmî bir yazışmada nötr-resmî uç seni asla yanıltmaz. Samimi kalıpları ise ancak muhatabınla aranda gerçekten yakınlık olduğunda kullan; yoksa fazla teklifsiz durabilirsin.
In English, formality is not an "on-off switch" but a slider. You can express the same function (asking for help, say) at three levels: casual, neutral, and formal. The distance between you and your addressee, the seriousness of the setting, and the size of what you're asking for move this slider up or down. You are more formal when asking a big favor and more casual when asking a close friend for something small. The example below shows how a single function changes across three levels.
In English, the longer the sentence, the more polite it usually is. Indirect structures (Would you mind…, I was wondering…) increase distance and respect.
When choosing among these levels, a single rule is enough: when in doubt, pick the more formal level. With someone you don't know, with a superior, or in formal correspondence, the neutral-formal end never lets you down. Use casual phrases only when there is genuine closeness between you and your addressee; otherwise you may come across as too familiar.
Aşağıdaki tablo en sık kullanılan iletişim işlevlerini, samimi ve resmî iki uçlarıyla verir. Her işlev için önce ne demek istediğine karar ver, sonra muhatabına göre sütunu seç. Nötr düzey genelde bu ikisinin arasında bir yerde durur; günlük iş ve okul ortamlarının çoğu için nötr-resmî uç güvenlidir.
| İşlev | Samimi | Resmî |
|---|---|---|
| Fikir belirtme | I think… / If you ask me… | In my view… / It seems to me that… |
| Katılma | Exactly! / Me too. | I couldn't agree more. |
| Katılmama | I don't think so. | I'm afraid I disagree. |
| Öneri | Let's… / How about…? | I'd suggest that we… |
| Teklif | Want some help? | Would you like me to…? |
| Özür | Sorry about that. | I do apologise for… |
The table below gives the most commonly used communicative functions with their two ends, casual and formal. For each function, first decide what you want to say, then choose the column according to your addressee. The neutral level usually sits somewhere between these two; for most everyday work and school settings, the neutral-formal end is safe.
| Function | Casual | Formal |
|---|---|---|
| Giving an opinion | I think… / If you ask me… | In my view… / It seems to me that… |
| Agreeing | Exactly! / Me too. | I couldn't agree more. |
| Disagreeing | I don't think so. | I'm afraid I disagree. |
| Suggesting | Let's… / How about…? | I'd suggest that we… |
| Offering | Want some help? | Would you like me to…? |
| Apologizing | Sorry about that. | I do apologise for… |
Yukarıdaki temel işlevlere ek olarak, günlük ve akademik konuşmayı akıcı kılan başka işlevler de vardır. Aşağıdaki kalıpları hazır bloklar gibi ezberlemek, konuşurken duraksamanı azaltır.
| İşlev | Hazır Kalıp | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| Açıklama isteme | Sorry, could you clarify…? | Sorry, what do you mean exactly? |
| Söze girme | Can I just add something? | If I could just come in here… |
| Tercih belirtme | I'd rather… / I'd prefer to… | I'd rather stay in tonight. |
| Şaşırma | You're kidding! / No way! | Really? That's amazing! |
| Kesinlik yumuşatma | It might be that… / perhaps | Perhaps we should wait. |
| Konuyu değiştirme | By the way… / Anyway… | By the way, did you call her? |
| Kapatma / bitirme | Anyway, I'd better go. | It was lovely talking to you. |
| Onaylatma | …, right? / …, isn't it? | You're coming, aren't you? |
Bu ifadeler sözcük sözcük çevrilmez; birer bütün olarak öğrenilir. By the way "yol boyunca" değil "bu arada" demektir. Kalıbı bağlamıyla ezberle.
In addition to the core functions above, there are other functions that make everyday and academic speech fluent. Memorizing the phrases below as ready-made blocks reduces your hesitation while speaking.
| Function | Ready-Made Phrase | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Asking for clarification | Sorry, could you clarify…? | Sorry, what do you mean exactly? |
| Interrupting / joining in | Can I just add something? | If I could just come in here… |
| Stating a preference | I'd rather… / I'd prefer to… | I'd rather stay in tonight. |
| Expressing surprise | You're kidding! / No way! | Really? That's amazing! |
| Softening certainty | It might be that… / perhaps | Perhaps we should wait. |
| Changing the subject | By the way… / Anyway… | By the way, did you call her? |
| Closing / ending | Anyway, I'd better go. | It was lovely talking to you. |
| Seeking confirmation | …, right? / …, isn't it? | You're coming, aren't you? |
These expressions are not translated word by word; they are learned as wholes. By the way does not mean "along the way" but "incidentally." Memorize the phrase with its context.
Rica: Could you…? · Would you mind + V-ing? Teklif: Shall I…? · Would you like me to…? Would you mind opening the window? kalıbında yanıtın ters mantığına dikkat: kabul için Not at all denir çünkü soru aslında "sakıncası var mı?" demektir. Bu ters mantık, Türk öğrencilerin sık şaşırdığı bir noktadır.
Would you mind opening the window? aslında "sakıncası var mı?" demektir. Kabul için Not at all ya da Of course not denir; Yes demek "evet, rahatsızım" anlamına gelir. Aynı ters mantık Do you mind if I…? için de geçerlidir.
Katılma ve katılmama (Agreeing & Disagreeing). Fikir alışverişinde onaylamak ya da karşı çıkmak için hazır kalıplar vardır. Katılma: Absolutely · I couldn't agree more · That's a good point. Katılmama İngilizcede genelde yumuşatılır: I see your point, but… · I'm afraid I don't quite agree. Doğrudan You're wrong demek çoğu ortamda kabadır.
Fikir belirtme (Giving Opinions). Görüşünü sunarken kesinlik derecesini seçersin. Kişisel: I think… · In my opinion… · If you ask me… Daha temkinli/akademik: It seems to me that… · I would argue that… Fikri desteklemek için gerekçeyle sürdür: …because… · The main reason is…
Öneri sunma (Making Suggestions). Bir eylem önerirken grup içi tonu ayarlarsın. Samimi: Let's… · How about + V-ing? · Why don't we…? Daha resmî: I'd suggest that we… · We might consider… How about ve What about ardından fiil -ing alır: How about meeting at six? Why don't we kalıbı ise yalın fiil ister: Why don't we start now?
Özür ve teşekkür (Apologizing & Thanking). İlişkiyi onaran işlevlerdir. Özür: Sorry about that · I do apologise for… · I'm terribly sorry. Teşekkür: Thanks a lot · I really appreciate it · I'm very grateful. Resmiyet arttıkça kalıp uzar ve doğrudanlık azalır.
Small talk. Hava, hafta sonu, yol durumu gibi hafif konular ilişki kurar ve konuşmayı ısıtır. Lovely weather today, isn't it? · How was your weekend? · Did you have a good trip?
Below, we cover each core function — linked to the site's detailed pages — with a short explanation, typical phrases, and English examples. The aim is for you to recognize both the casual and the formal end of each function. Several phrases are given under each function because, in real conversation, saying the same thing always with the same words sounds artificial; keeping a few alternatives to hand makes you both natural and flexible.
Requests & Offers. A request is used when asking for something from someone; an offer when offering help. The politeness of both comes from modals. Requests: Could you…? · Would you mind + V-ing? Offers: Shall I…? · Would you like me to…? In the Would you mind opening the window? pattern, note the reversed logic of the answer: to accept you say Not at all because the question really means "do you mind?" This reversed logic is a point that often surprises Turkish learners.
Would you mind opening the window? really means "do you mind?" To accept, you say Not at all or Of course not; saying Yes means "yes, I do mind." The same reversed logic applies to Do you mind if I…?
Agreeing & Disagreeing. There are ready-made phrases for approving or objecting in an exchange of views. Agreeing: Absolutely · I couldn't agree more · That's a good point. In English, disagreement is usually softened: I see your point, but… · I'm afraid I don't quite agree. Saying a blunt You're wrong is rude in most settings.
Giving Opinions. When presenting your view, you choose the degree of certainty. Personal: I think… · In my opinion… · If you ask me… More cautious/academic: It seems to me that… · I would argue that… Support your opinion with a reason: …because… · The main reason is…
Making Suggestions. When proposing an action, you adjust the tone within a group. Casual: Let's… · How about + V-ing? · Why don't we…? More formal: I'd suggest that we… · We might consider… How about and What about take a verb in the -ing form: How about meeting at six? The Why don't we pattern, however, takes the bare verb: Why don't we start now?
Apologizing & Thanking. These are relationship-repairing functions. Apologizing: Sorry about that · I do apologise for… · I'm terribly sorry. Thanking: Thanks a lot · I really appreciate it · I'm very grateful. As formality increases, the phrase gets longer and less direct.
Small talk. Light topics such as the weather, the weekend, or the traffic build rapport and warm up a conversation. Lovely weather today, isn't it? · How was your weekend? · Did you have a good trip? In many cultures, a bit of small talk is expected before getting straight to the point; skipping it can seem cold. Good small talk relies on asking open-ended questions and getting the other person talking; brushing it off with one-word answers ends the conversation early.
In real conversation, functions are used not one at a time but in a chain: a suggestion is followed by a polite request, which a thank-you completes. In a discussion you first give an opinion, then partly agree with the other person, then object politely. So after learning functions separately, studying them together in mini-dialogues is the most realistic approach.
Kibarlık sihirli bir kelimeden (please) değil, birkaç dilbilgisel araçtan gelir. Bu araçları bilinçli kullanmak, aynı isteği çok daha nazik iletmeni sağlar. Aşağıdaki dört mekanizma, İngilizce nezaketinin bel kemiğidir.
could, would, may ricayı yumuşatır.
Could I possibly…?Doğrudan soru yerine sarmalama.
Do you know if…?just, a bit, possibly, maybe.
I just wanted to ask…Politeness comes not from a magic word (please) but from a few grammatical tools. Using these tools consciously lets you convey the same request far more politely. The four mechanisms below are the backbone of English politeness.
could, would, may soften a request.
Could I possibly…?Wrapping instead of a direct question.
Do you know if…?just, a bit, possibly, maybe.
I just wanted to ask…Give me a pen. emir gibi algılanır. Ekle: Could you give me a pen, please?
Give me that, please hâlâ sert. Kibarlık asıl yapıdan gelir (could/would + dolaylılık).
Hava, hafta sonu, yol gibi hafif konular ilişki kurar. Doğrudan konuya girmek bazı kültürlerde kaba görünebilir. Bkz. Small Talk.
Türkçeden birebir çeviriyle No, this is wrong demek İngilizcede sert durur. Önce onay ver, sonra yumuşak itiraz et: I see what you mean, but I'm not sure that's the whole picture.
How about we go / How about to go yerine How about going? Bu kalıpta fiil -ing alır; sık yapılan bir hatadır.
Give me a pen. is perceived as an order. Instead: Could you give me a pen, please?
Give me that, please is still harsh. Politeness really comes from the structure (could/would + indirectness).
Light topics like the weather, the weekend, or the traffic build rapport. Getting straight to the point can seem rude in some cultures. See Small Talk.
Saying No, this is wrong as a literal translation from Turkish sounds harsh in English. First acknowledge, then object gently: I see what you mean, but I'm not sure that's the whole picture.
Instead of How about we go / How about to go, use How about going? In this pattern the verb takes -ing; it is a common mistake.
İşlev kalıplarını doğru kullanmak yalnızca dilbilgisi değil, kültürel farkındalık da ister. İngilizce konuşulan ortamlarda, özellikle İngiliz İngilizcesinde, nezaket sık sık dolaylılık ve eksiltme (understatement) ile kurulur. Bu incelikleri bilmek, gramerin doğru olduğu hâlde "yabancı" duran cümlelerden kurtulmanı sağlar.
Dolaylılık kibarlıktır. Doğrudan bir istek yerine dolaylı yapı tercih edilir: Give me the report yerine Would you mind sending me the report? Cümle uzadıkça ve dolaylılaştıkça saygı artar. Türk öğrenciler çoğu zaman fazla doğrudan olduklarından, bu dolaylı kalıpları bilinçli olarak eklemelidir.
Eksiltme ve yumuşatıcılar. İngilizcede olumsuz bir durum sık sık hafifletilerek söylenir: It's not great aslında "oldukça kötü" demek olabilir; a bit of a problem büyük bir sorunu ima edebilir. just, a little, perhaps, I think, sort of gibi yumuşatıcılar cümleyi daha nazik ve daha az iddialı yapar.
Şikâyet ve ret nazikçe. Bir hizmetten şikâyet ederken bile öfke değil, ölçülü bir dil beklenir: I'm afraid there seems to be a problem with… Bir daveti reddederken doğrudan No yerine gerekçeli, üzgün bir kalıp kullanılır: I'd love to, but I'm afraid I can't make it. Bu incelikler, ilişkiyi bozmadan mesajı iletmenin anahtarıdır.
Emin değilsen daha kibar/daha dolaylı olanı seç. Fazla resmî olmak bir yabancı için nadiren sorun yaratır; fazla doğrudan olmak ise kolayca kaba algılanır.
Using function phrases correctly requires not only grammar but also cultural awareness. In English-speaking settings, especially in British English, politeness is often built with indirectness and understatement. Knowing these subtleties helps you escape sentences that are grammatically correct yet sound "foreign."
Indirectness is politeness. An indirect structure is preferred over a direct request: instead of Give me the report, Would you mind sending me the report? The longer and more indirect the sentence, the more respect it shows. Because Turkish learners are often too direct, they should add these indirect patterns consciously.
Understatement and softeners. In English, a negative situation is often stated in a softened way: It's not great may actually mean "quite bad"; a bit of a problem can imply a big problem. Softeners like just, a little, perhaps, I think, sort of make a sentence more polite and less assertive.
Complaining and refusing politely. Even when complaining about a service, a measured tone is expected rather than anger: I'm afraid there seems to be a problem with… When refusing an invitation, instead of a blunt No, a reasoned, regretful phrase is used: I'd love to, but I'm afraid I can't make it. These subtleties are the key to conveying your message without damaging the relationship.
When in doubt, choose the more polite/more indirect option. Being too formal rarely causes a problem for a foreigner; being too direct is easily perceived as rude.
İletişim işlevleri gramer kuralı gibi değil, hazır kalıp bloklarını doğru duruma bağlama becerisidir. En verimli yol, kalıpları izole ezberlemek değil, muhataba göre seçmeyi pratik etmektir:
Her işlev için samimi / nötr / resmî üç kalıbı tek kartta topla; hangisini kime söyleyeceğini işaretle.
Can you… / Could you… / I was wondering…Aynı ricayı bir arkadaşa, bir öğretmene ve bir müşteriye söylüyormuş gibi sesli tekrar et.
same function, three tonesDizi, film ve podcast'lerde geçen hazır kalıpları not al; bağlamıyla birlikte kaydet.
"Not at all." / "Fair enough."Kibarlık yalnızca sözcükten değil, tonlamadan da gelir. Yükselen ton ricayı yumuşatır.
Bkz. IntonationSon olarak, işlevleri gerçek konuşmada test etmeden ustalaşmak mümkün değildir. Öğrendiğin her kalıbı bir sonraki fırsatta kullan: bir e-postada nazik bir rica, bir tartışmada yumuşak bir itiraz, bir tanışmada kısa bir small talk. Hata yapmaktan çekinme; işlev kalıpları ancak kullandıkça refleks hâline gelir. Zamanla, hangi durumda hangi tonu seçeceğini düşünmeden bilir hâle geleceksin — gerçek akıcılık tam olarak budur.
Communicative functions are not like grammar rules but the skill of tying ready-made phrase blocks to the right situation. The most efficient way is not memorizing phrases in isolation but practicing choosing them according to the addressee:
For each function, gather the three phrases — casual / neutral / formal — on a single card; mark which to say to whom.
Can you… / Could you… / I was wondering…Repeat the same request out loud as if saying it to a friend, a teacher, and a client.
same function, three tonesNote the ready-made phrases you hear in series, films, and podcasts; record them with their context.
"Not at all." / "Fair enough."Politeness comes not only from words but also from intonation. A rising tone softens a request.
See IntonationFinally, you cannot master functions without testing them in real conversation. Use every phrase you learn at the next opportunity: a polite request in an email, a gentle objection in a discussion, a bit of small talk at a first meeting. Don't be afraid of making mistakes; function phrases become reflexes only through use. Over time, you will know which tone to choose in which situation without thinking — that is exactly what real fluency is.
