|---|---|---|
| Gitsek mi? / Gidelim mi? | öneri (biz) | Why don't we go? / Shall we go? |
| Hadi gidelim. | öneri (biz) | Let's go. |
| Pizza söylesek? | öneri (biz) | How about ordering pizza? |
| Gitmelisin. / Gitsen iyi olur. | tavsiye (sen) | You should go. / You'd better go. |
| Yerinde olsam giderdim. | tavsiye (sen) | If I were you, I'd go. |
Neden Türk öğrenci zorlanır? Üç sebep: (1) Kalıplar birebir çevrilmez — "Why don't we" olumsuz görünür ama olumludur. (2) Öneri genelde biz, tavsiye genelde sen odaklıdır; Türkçe bu ayrımı kalıpta göstermez. (3) Nezaket dereceleri farklıdır: "You must go" tavsiye değil neredeyse emirdir, "You'd better go" ise nazik değil gizli bir uyarıdır.
Imagine a friend asks you "What shall we do?" You say "Shall we go to the cinema?" — that is a suggestion: you put forward an idea both of you could do. But if your friend says "I've got a bad headache", you say "You'd better take a painkiller" — that is advice: you tell them what you think is right for them. English does these two jobs with different patterns, and this section teaches exactly those.
Why a separate topic? Because in English suggestions and advice mostly run on fixed patterns. If "Why don't we...?" is translated word-for-word it looks negative/reproachful, like "Why aren't we doing it?"; yet its real meaning is a warm suggestion. If you don't learn these patterns one by one, you'll both misunderstand and misbuild them.
The Turkish equivalent
In Turkish we usually make a suggestion with the questioning tone -sek/-sak ("Gitsek mi?"), with hadi ("Hadi gidelim") or with -sene/-sana ("Baksana"). Advice we make with -meli/-malı ("gitmelisin"), with iyi olur ("gitsen iyi olur") or with bence. In English each of these maps to a separate pattern; they are not one-to-one.
| Turkish | Function | English pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Gitsek mi? / Gidelim mi? | suggestion (we) | Why don't we go? / Shall we go? |
| Hadi gidelim. | suggestion (we) | Let's go. |
| Pizza söylesek? | suggestion (we) | How about ordering pizza? |
| Gitmelisin. / Gitsen iyi olur. | advice (you) | You should go. / You'd better go. |
| Yerinde olsam giderdim. | advice (you) | If I were you, I'd go. |
Why do Turkish learners struggle? Three reasons: (1) The patterns don't translate word-for-word — "Why don't we" looks negative but is positive. (2) A suggestion is usually we-focused, advice usually you-focused; Turkish doesn't show this distinction in the pattern. (3) The degrees of politeness differ: "You must go" is not advice but almost an order, and "You'd better go" is not polite but a hidden warning. Mixing up these subtleties makes you sound rude or funny.
- Öneri = birlikte yapılabilecek bir fikir sunmak; tavsiye = karşındakine ne yapması iyi olur onu söylemek.
- En kolay öneri kalıpları: Let's + V1, Why don't we + V1?, How/What about + -ing?, We could + V1.
- En kolay tavsiye kalıpları: You should + V1, You shouldn't + V1.
- Öneri kalıplarından sonra fiilin yalın hâli gelir (Why don't we go), ama How about ve What about'tan sonra fiil -ing alır (How about going).
- Should / could / had better'dan sonra to KULLANMA: You should to go yanlış → You should go.
- Let's'in olumsuzu Let's not'tur: Let's not wait. ("Don't let's" nadir/eskidir).
- You'd better nazik değildir; içinde gizli bir uyarı vardır: "yoksa kötü olur".
- If I were you kalıbında daima were kullan (I/he/she dahil), was değil.
- Resmi öneride I suggest / recommend (that) you + V1 deriz; araya to koymayız.
- Öneri veya tavsiyeyi yumuşatmak için maybe, perhaps, I think, might ekleyebilirsin: Maybe you should...
- Suggestion = offering an idea you could do together; advice = telling the other person what would be good for them to do.
- The easiest suggestion patterns: Let's + V1, Why don't we + V1?, How/What about + -ing?, We could + V1.
- The easiest advice patterns: You should + V1, You shouldn't + V1.
- After suggestion patterns the base form of the verb follows (Why don't we go), but after How about and What about the verb takes -ing (How about going).
- After should / could / had better do NOT use to: You should to go is wrong → You should go.
- The negative of Let's is Let's not: Let's not wait. ("Don't let's" is rare/old).
- You'd better is not polite; it carries a hidden warning: "or else it'll be bad".
- In the If I were you pattern always use were (including I/he/she), not was.
- In formal suggestions we say I suggest / recommend (that) you + V1; we don't put to in between.
- To soften a suggestion or advice you can add maybe, perhaps, I think, might: Maybe you should...
Ana kural şu: öneri/tavsiye kalıplarının çoğu, kendinden sonra 'to'suz yalın fiil ister; tek istisna how/what about (-ing) ve resmi suggest -ing.
Öneri (suggestion)
Ortak bir eylemi masaya koyar, karar birlikte verilir: Let's…, Why don't we…?, How about…?, Shall we…?
Tavsiye (advice)
Karşındakine yön verir: You should…, You'd better…, If I were you, I'd…
Ton farkı
should nazik, must / have to güçlü, ought to resmîdir — dozu duruma göre seç.
Öneri kalıpları — olumlu
Formül: Let's + V1 · Why don't we + V1? · Shall we + V1? · How/What about + -ing? · We could + V1.
Öneri kalıpları — olumsuz
Formül: Let's not + V1 · Why don't we not... nadir; bunun yerine Maybe we shouldn't + V1 tercih edilir · How about not + -ing?.
Öneri kalıpları — soru
Zaten çoğu öneri kalıbı soru biçimindedir: Why don't we...?, Shall we...?, How about...?, What about...?. Bunlar hem öneriyi sunar hem karşının onayını ister.
Tavsiye kalıpları — olumlu / olumsuz
Formül: You should + V1 / You shouldn't + V1 · You'd better + V1 / You'd better not + V1 · You ought to + V1 · If I were you, I'd + V1.
Tavsiye — soru (tavsiye istemek)
Tavsiyeyi vermek kadar istemek de önemlidir: What should I do?, Do you think I should...?, What would you do?.
| İşlev | İfade | Türkçe |
|---|---|---|
| Kabul (hevesli) | Great idea! Let's do that. | Harika fikir! Yapalım. |
| Kabul (nötr) | Sure, that works for me. | Olur, bana uyar. |
| Tereddüt | I'm not sure about that. | Ondan pek emin değilim. |
| Nazik ret | I'd rather not, if that's okay. | Sakıncası yoksa istemem. |
| Karşı öneri | Actually, why don't we... instead? | Aslında onun yerine ... yapsak? |
Suggestions and advice have no single conjugation; there are several patterns. Below we build the affirmative, negative and question form of each. The main rule is this: most suggestion/advice patterns want a 'to'-less base verb after them; the only exceptions are how/what about (-ing) and the formal suggest -ing.
Suggestion
Puts a shared action on the table, the decision made together: Let's…, Why don't we…?, How about…?, Shall we…?
Advice
Gives the other person direction: You should…, You'd better…, If I were you, I'd…
Difference in tone
should is polite, must / have to is strong, ought to is formal — pick the dose to fit the situation.
Suggestion patterns — affirmative
Formula: Let's + V1 · Why don't we + V1? · Shall we + V1? · How/What about + -ing? · We could + V1.
Suggestion patterns — negative
Formula: Let's not + V1 · Why don't we not... is rare; instead Maybe we shouldn't + V1 is preferred · How about not + -ing?.
Suggestion patterns — question
Most suggestion patterns are already question forms: Why don't we...?, Shall we...?, How about...?, What about...?. These both offer the suggestion and ask for the other person's agreement.
Advice patterns — affirmative / negative
Formula: You should + V1 / You shouldn't + V1 · You'd better + V1 / You'd better not + V1 · You ought to + V1 · If I were you, I'd + V1.
Advice — question (asking for advice)
Asking for advice matters as much as giving it: What should I do?, Do you think I should...?, What would you do?.
| Function | Expression | Turkish |
|---|---|---|
| Accept (keen) | Great idea! Let's do that. | Harika fikir! Yapalım. |
| Accept (neutral) | Sure, that works for me. | Olur, bana uyar. |
| Hesitation | I'm not sure about that. | Ondan pek emin değilim. |
| Polite refusal | I'd rather not, if that's okay. | Sakıncası yoksa istemem. |
| Counter-suggestion | Actually, why don't we... instead? | Aslında onun yerine ... yapsak? |
Her başlıkta hangi kalıbın nereye oturduğuna dikkat et.
- Kalıbı ve dozu seç: Samimi ortamda Why don't we…? / You could…, resmî ortamda I'd suggest… / You might want to…
- Gerekçelendir: Öneriyi kısa bir nedenle destekle — Why don't we leave early? The traffic gets bad after five.
Suggestions and advice come up everywhere, from everyday life to a business meeting, from travel to academic feedback. Below we move from the most common use to the more specific/formal. In each heading, note which pattern fits where.
- Read the situation: Is the other person looking for a joint decision, or do they want to be guided? This decides whether you give a suggestion or advice.
- Choose the pattern and the dose: In a casual setting Why don't we…? / You could…, in a formal setting I'd suggest… / You might want to…
- Give a reason: Back the suggestion with a short reason — Why don't we leave early? The traffic gets bad after five.
1) Everyday planning — suggesting doing something together
2) Health and wellbeing — telling someone what they ought to do
3) Work and professional settings — giving a formal suggestion
4) Travel and guidance — advice-like information
5) Problem-solving — generating options
| Sinyal | Ne belli eder? | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| Let's / Shall we | Öneri (biz, birlikte) | Let's start. / Shall we start? |
| Why don't we/you | Öneri veya tavsiye | Why don't you rest? |
| How/What about | Öneri (-ing gelir) | How about leaving now? |
| should / ought to | Tavsiye (dengeli) | You should apply. |
| had better ('d better) | Güçlü tavsiye/uyarı | You'd better hurry. |
| If I were you | Kişisel tavsiye | If I were you, I'd wait. |
| maybe / perhaps / might | Yumuşatıcı (nazikleştirir) | Maybe you should ask. |
| I suggest / recommend | Resmi öneri | I suggest we vote. |
Suggestions/advice have no fixed 'time expression' (this is a communication function, not a tense). But there are signal words and softeners that give away whether a sentence is a suggestion, advice or offer. Recognising them makes both understanding and producing correctly easier.
| Signal | What it reveals | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Let's / Shall we | Suggestion (we, together) | Let's start. / Shall we start? |
| Why don't we/you | Suggestion or advice | Why don't you rest? |
| How/What about | Suggestion (-ing follows) | How about leaving now? |
| should / ought to | Advice (balanced) | You should apply. |
| had better ('d better) | Strong advice/warning | You'd better hurry. |
| If I were you | Personal advice | If I were you, I'd wait. |
| maybe / perhaps / might | Softener (makes it polite) | Maybe you should ask. |
| I suggest / recommend | Formal suggestion | I suggest we vote. |
Nazikliği artırmanın en kolay yolu koşullu çerçevedir: düz You should quit yerine If I were you, I'd think about quitting demek, tavsiyeyi bir emir olmaktan çıkarıp bir bakış açısına dönüştürür.
Güç (ne kadar zorlayıcı?)
En yumuşaktan en sertine bir merdiven vardır: You could... < You might want to... < You should... < You ought to... < You'd better... < You must / have to.... 'could' sadece bir seçenek sunar; 'should' dengeli bir öneridir; "'d better" içinde "yoksa kötü olur" tehdidi taşır; 'must' artık tavsiye değil neredeyse emirdir.
Nezaket — yumuşatıcılar
Bir tavsiyeyi maybe, perhaps, I think, might, just, a bit ile yumuşatabilirsin. Doğrudan 'You should do X' kimi zaman fazla kesin durabilir; 'Maybe you could try X' çok daha kibardır.
Mesafe — 'biz' mi 'sen' mi?
Öneriyi we ile kurmak seni de işin içine katar ve daha az dayatmacı yapar: Why don't we... "beraber halledelim" der. Tavsiyeyi you ile kurmak sorumluluğu karşıya yükler. Bir kişiye nazik davranmak istiyorsan, 'you should' yerine bazen 'we could' demek ilişkiyi yumuşatır.
The real mastery in suggestions and advice is sensing how strong, how polite and how pushy each pattern is. You can say the same idea with five different patterns and each sends the other person a different message. Below we examine it along four axes: force, politeness, distance (we/you) and indirectness.
The easiest way to increase politeness is the conditional frame: saying If I were you, I'd think about quitting instead of a flat You should quit turns the advice from an order into a point of view.
Force (how compelling?)
There is a ladder from softest to sharpest: You could... < You might want to... < You should... < You ought to... < You'd better... < You must / have to.... 'could' only offers an option; 'should' is balanced advice; "'d better" carries an "or else it'll be bad" threat; 'must' is no longer advice but almost an order.
Politeness — softeners
You can soften advice with maybe, perhaps, I think, might, just, a bit. This sends the other person the message 'I'm not ordering you, just sharing my opinion' and is highly valued in British culture. A blunt 'You should do X' can sometimes seem too definite; 'Maybe you could try X' is far more polite.
Distance — 'we' or 'you'?
Building a suggestion with we brings you into it too and makes it less pushy: Why don't we... says "let's sort it out together". Building advice with you loads the responsibility onto the other person. If you want to be gentle with someone, saying 'we could' instead of 'you should' sometimes softens the relationship.
Ayrı kalıplar gerekir: öneri için Why don't we…?, tavsiye için You should… Doğru kalıbı seçmezsen ton kayar.
- Türkçe '-meli' hem tavsiye hem zorunluluk demektir; İngilizce bunları ayırır: tavsiye = should, zorunluluk = have to / must.
- Türkçe 'Gitsek mi?' tek kalıpla hem öneri hem soru; İngilizce bunu Shall we go? veya Why don't we go? ile ayrı kurar.
- Türkçe 'tavsiye' sayılabilir gibi görünür ('bir tavsiye'); İngilizce advice SAYILAMAZ: 'a piece of advice' demen gerekir.
- Türkçede 'Yerinde olsam' geçmiş çekim ister; İngilizcede karşılığı If I were you — her öznede 'were'.
Turkish mostly makes suggestions and advice with suffixes: -sek/-sak (suggestion), -meli/-malı (obligation/advice), -sene/-sana (casual suggestion). English, on the other hand, uses separate word patterns. This structural difference keeps tripping up the learner who translates word-for-word.
Turkish
A single suffix (-meli/-malı, -sana) covers both suggestion and advice: "Gitmelisin", "Bir dinlensene". The mood is flexible, the context decides.
English
Separate patterns are needed: for suggestion Why don't we…?, for advice You should… If you don't pick the right pattern, the tone slips.
- Turkish '-meli' means both advice and obligation; English separates them: advice = should, obligation = have to / must.
- Turkish 'Gitsek mi?' is both suggestion and question in one pattern; English builds this separately with Shall we go? or Why don't we go?.
- Turkish 'tavsiye' looks countable ('bir tavsiye'); English advice is UNCOUNTABLE: you must say 'a piece of advice'.
- Turkish 'Yerinde olsam' wants a past inflection; its English counterpart is If I were you — 'were' with every subject.
Öneri ve tavsiye, birkaç yakın işlevle sık karıştırılır: rica/teklif, görüş bildirme ve zorunluluk. Farkı kavramak, doğru kalıbı seçmenin anahtarıdır.
| İşlev | Ne yapar? | Tipik kalıp | Örnek |
|---|---|---|---|
| Öneri | Ortak bir fikir sunar | Why don't we...?, Let's... | Let's leave early. |
| Tavsiye | Karşı için doğru olanı söyler | You should..., If I were you... | You should leave early. |
| Rica / Teklif | Bir şey ister veya sunar | Could you...?, Shall I...? | Shall I carry that? |
| Görüş bildirme | Kişisel düşünceyi belirtir | I think..., In my opinion... | I think it's too risky. |
| Zorunluluk | Kaçınılmaz gerekliliği söyler | You must..., You have to... | You must wear a helmet. |
Suggestions and advice are often confused with a few close functions: requests/offers, expressing opinions and obligation. Grasping the difference is the key to choosing the right pattern.
| Function | What it does | Typical pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suggestion | Offers a shared idea | Why don't we...?, Let's... | Let's leave early. |
| Advice | Says what's right for the other person | You should..., If I were you... | You should leave early. |
| Request / Offer | Asks for or offers something | Could you...?, Shall I...? | Shall I carry that? |
| Expressing opinions | States a personal thought | I think..., In my opinion... | I think it's too risky. |
| Obligation | States an unavoidable necessity | You must..., You have to... | You must wear a helmet. |
The line can blur: Why don't you...? is a bridge between suggestion and advice. Shall I...? may look like a suggestion but is actually an offer (see Requests & Offers). When you open advice with 'I think', you move closer to expressing an opinion (see Expressing Opinions).
Kalıplar çoğunlukla düzenli olsa da birkaç özel durum vardır; bunları bilmek seni doğal konuşan biriyle sınavda kural bilen birinin arasındaki farka taşır.
En sık iki hata: modaldan sonra to koymak (You should to rest → You should rest) ve her tavsiyeyi must ile vermek. must çok güçlüdür; arkadaş tavsiyesinde should ya da could daha doğaldır.
- Let's'in soru eki (question tag) 'shall we?'dir: Let's start, shall we? (Diğer tüm cümlelerden farklı olarak 'will we?' değil).
- Why not + yalın fiil tek başına öneri olur: Why not try again? = 'Neden bir daha denemeyesin?' (özne söylenmez).
- suggest'ten sonra resmi/eski üslupta 'should' ile de kurulabilir: I suggest (that) he should apply — ama modern kullanım genelde yalın fiili tercih eder: I suggest he apply.
- had better gelecek/şimdi içindir, geçmiş için kullanılmaz; geçmiş pişmanlığı için should have + V3 gerekir: You should have told me.
- ought to, should ile hemen hemen eş anlamlıdır ama olumsuz/soru biçimi (oughtn't to) günümüzde nadirdir; onun yerine shouldn't tercih edilir.
Although the patterns are mostly regular, there are a few special cases; knowing them takes you across the gap between someone who speaks naturally and someone who merely knows the rule in an exam.
The two most common mistakes: putting to after a modal (You should to rest → You should rest) and giving every piece of advice with must. must is very strong; in advice to a friend should or could is more natural.
- The question tag for Let's is 'shall we?': Let's start, shall we? (Unlike all other sentences, not 'will we?').
- Why not + base verb is a suggestion on its own: Why not try again? = 'Why not try once more?' (the subject is not stated).
- After suggest, in formal/old style it can also be built with 'should': I suggest (that) he should apply — but modern usage generally prefers the base verb: I suggest he apply.
- had better is for the future/present, not used for the past; for past regret you need should have + V3: You should have told me.
- ought to is almost synonymous with should, but its negative/question form (oughtn't to) is rare today; shouldn't is preferred instead.
Günlük konuşmada öneri ve tavsiye hızlı, kısaltmalı ve tonlamayla renklenir. Aşağıdaki iki diyalog, kalıpların gerçek hayatta nasıl aktığını gösteriyor.
In everyday speech suggestions and advice are fast, contracted and coloured by intonation. The two dialogues below show how the patterns flow in real life.
Akademik ve resmi yazıda 'you should' ve 'let's' fazla gündelik kalır. It is advisable to..., It would be worth -ing, One should..., It is recommended that....
- 'a larger sample would strengthen' = doğrudan tavsiye yerine sonucu betimleyerek öneri.
- 'future studies should' = geneli kastettiği için buyurgan durmaz.
- recommend/advisable/worth considering: üç ayrı resmi öneri kalıbı.
- Akademik yazıda 'you' ve 'let's' genelde kaçınılır.
- 'it is recommended that' + subjunctive (yalın fiil) yapısıyla birleşebilir.
- Register kayması: gündelik → resmi öneri, konunun özü.
In academic and formal writing 'you should' and 'let's' stay too casual. Instead, more objective, impersonal or polite structures are preferred: It is advisable to..., It would be worth -ing, One should..., It is recommended that.... These structures direct the suggestion not at a person but at a general reader or situation.
- 'a larger sample would strengthen' = a suggestion made by describing the outcome instead of giving direct advice.
- 'future studies should' = doesn't sound bossy because it means people in general.
- recommend/advisable/worth considering: three separate formal suggestion patterns.
- In academic writing 'you' and 'let's' are generally avoided.
- 'it is recommended that' can combine with the subjunctive (base verb) structure.
- The shift of register: casual → formal suggestion, the heart of the topic.
- 'Why don't you make a list' = tek kişiye nazik öneri/tavsiye köprüsü.
- 'you should register' (dengeli tavsiye) ile 'you'd better sort out' (uyarı tonlu tavsiye) yan yana — güç farkını göster.
- 'How about doing' = -ing zorunlu; karşı öneri sunma.
- 'If I were you, I'd deal with' = 'were' + 'would'; kişisel tavsiye kalıbı.
- 'you could always ask' = rahatlatıcı, düşük baskılı seçenek.
- 'I suggest checking' = suggest + -ing (to YOK); resmi-nazik öneri.
- 'It might be worth waiting' = çok yumuşak, dolaylı öneri (C1 tadında).
- 'Maybe I should' = yumuşatıcı 'maybe' ile kendine tavsiye.
- 'Have you thought about joining' = soruyla verilen kibar öneri (C1); about → -ing.
- 'You may want to check' = üst düzey nezaketle dolaylı tavsiye.
- 'you shouldn't spend' = olumsuz tavsiye, dengeli ton.
- 'shall I start with...?' = tek başına yapmayı önerme/teklif; bkz. requests-offers.
- 'why don't we video-call' = 'biz' odaklı öneri, ortaklık.
- 'Let's not get carried away' = Let's olumsuzu 'not' ile.
- 'you'd better start before you change your mind' = uyarı tonlu güçlü tavsiye, kapanış.
- 'Why don't you make a list' = a polite suggestion/advice bridge to one person.
- 'you should register' (balanced advice) next to 'you'd better sort out' (advice with a warning tone) — showing the difference in force.
- 'How about doing' = -ing obligatory; offering a counter-suggestion.
- 'If I were you, I'd deal with' = 'were' + 'would'; the personal advice pattern.
- 'you could always ask' = a reassuring, low-pressure option.
- 'I suggest checking' = suggest + -ing (NO to); a formal-polite suggestion.
- 'It might be worth waiting' = a very soft, indirect suggestion (a C1 flavour).
- 'Maybe I should' = advice to oneself with the softener 'maybe'.
- 'Have you thought about joining' = a polite suggestion given as a question (C1); about → -ing.
- 'You may want to check' = indirect advice with top-level politeness.
- 'you shouldn't spend' = negative advice, balanced tone.
- 'shall I start with...?' = offering to do something on your own; see requests-offers.
- 'why don't we video-call' = a 'we'-focused suggestion, partnership.
- 'Let's not get carried away' = the negative of Let's with 'not'.
- 'you'd better start before you change your mind' = strong advice with a warning tone, closing.

- "You'd better apologise."
- "Why don't we split the cost?"
- "You could try turning it off and on."
- "I suggest you take the earlier flight."
- "You must see this film!" — Burada 'must' bir zorunluluk mu, yoksa güçlü bir tavsiye mi?Güçlü, hevesli bir tavsiye/öneri: burada 'must' kural değil, 'kesinlikle izle' coşkusudur — bağlam belirler.
The questions below check not the rule but the meaning. Answer by thinking about what the sentence conveys (suggestion or advice, strong or polite).
- "You'd better apologise." — Is this just polite advice, or is there a warning in it?There is a warning in it: it carries the meaning 'or there'll be bad consequences'; it is not mild/gentle advice.
- "Why don't we split the cost?" — Is the speaker part of it, or does the work fall only on the other person? The speaker is part of it too: because 'we' is used, it is a shared suggestion to do together.
- "You could try turning it off and on." — Is this strong advice or a low-pressure option?A low-pressure option: 'could' only offers a possibility, the decision is entirely with the other person.
- "I suggest you take the earlier flight." — Is this casual or a more formal/firm suggestion?A more formal and firm suggestion: 'I suggest' suits serious contexts like a meeting or planning.
- "You must see this film!" — Is 'must' here an obligation, or strong advice?Strong, enthusiastic advice/recommendation: here 'must' is not a rule but the excitement of 'definitely watch it' — the context decides.

If I were you...) kullan.
- Rehber soru 1: Hangi kalıp 'biz birlikte' anlamı verir? (Why don't we / Let's / How about)
- Rehber soru 2: Ona özel doğru olanı nasıl söylersin? (You should / If I were you)
(maybe, might, I think)
- Rehber soru 4: Güçlü bir uyarı gerekiyorsa hangi kalıp? (You'd better...)
Task: A friend is stressed about an exam and writes to you "I don't know what I need to do." Write them a short message (5-7 sentences) with both two suggestions (things you could do together) and two pieces of advice (just for them). Use at least one softener (maybe/perhaps/might) and at least one personal advice pattern (If I were you...).
- Guiding question 1: Which pattern gives the 'we together' meaning? (Why don't we / Let's / How about)
- Guiding question 2: How do you tell them what's right just for them? (You should / If I were you)
- Guiding question 3: How do you soften your advice so it doesn't sound like an order? (maybe, might, I think)
- Guiding question 4: If a strong warning is needed, which pattern? (You'd better...)
Kavram kontrolü (CCQ) örnekleri: "Why don't we go?" için sorun: Am I asking a real question about the reason? (Hayır — bir öneri.) Are you and I both doing it? (Evet.) "You'd better hurry" için: Is something bad possible if you don't? (Evet — uyarı var.) Bu sorular kalıbın gerçek işlevini ezberden ayırır.
En sık iki hata: (1) 'should to' — modal + to. Bunu düzeltmek için 'should/could/must' kartlarını 'to' YASAK bölgesine koyun. (2) 'an advice / advices' — advice'ın sayılamazlığı. 'a piece of advice' kalıbını 'a piece of cake / paper' analojisiyle öğretin.
Concept-check question (CCQ) examples: For "Why don't we go?" ask: Am I asking a real question about the reason? (No — it's a suggestion.) Are you and I both doing it? (Yes.) For "You'd better hurry": Is something bad possible if you don't? (Yes — there's a warning.) These questions separate the real function of the pattern from rote memorisation.
The two most common mistakes: (1) 'should to' — modal + to. To fix it, put the 'should/could/must' cards in a 'to' FORBIDDEN zone. (2) 'an advice / advices' — the uncountability of advice. Teach the 'a piece of advice' pattern with the 'a piece of cake / paper' analogy.
- Öneri genelde 'biz' odaklıdır: Let's, Why don't we, How/What about + -ing, We could, Shall we.
- Tavsiye genelde 'sen' odaklıdır: You should, You'd better, If I were you, I'd, You ought to.
You should go, Let's go.
- Tek istisna: How/What about ve suggest kendinden sonra -ing ister.
- Nezaket merdiveni: could < might want to < should < ought to < had better < must.
- had better nazik değil, gizli uyarı taşır; If I were you daima 'were' ister.
- advice sayılamaz ('a piece of advice'); advise fiildir; ikisini karıştırma.
- Yumuşatıcılar (maybe, perhaps, might, I think) her tavsiyeyi kibarlaştırır.
- Resmi/akademik yazıda you should yerine it is advisable to, it would be worth -ing tercih et.
- En kibar öneri çoğu zaman bir sorudur: Have you thought about...?, Why not...?
- Yakın işlevleri karıştırma: teklif için Rica & Teklif, görüş için Görüş Bildirme.
- Suggestions are usually 'we'-focused: Let's, Why don't we, How/What about + -ing, We could, Shall we.
- Advice is usually 'you'-focused: You should, You'd better, If I were you, I'd, You ought to.
- After modal and suggestion patterns there is NO 'to', just a base verb: You should go, Let's go.
- The only exception: How/What about and suggest want -ing after them.
- The politeness ladder: could < might want to < should < ought to < had better < must.
- had better is not polite; it carries a hidden warning; If I were you always wants 'were'.
- advice is uncountable ('a piece of advice'); advise is the verb; don't confuse the two.
- Softeners (maybe, perhaps, might, I think) make every piece of advice more polite.
- In formal/academic writing prefer it is advisable to, it would be worth -ing instead of you should.
- The most polite suggestion is often a question: Have you thought about...?, Why not...?
- Don't confuse the related functions: for offers see Requests & Offers, for opinions Expressing Opinions.
