Neden zor?
- Türkçedeki tek bir kelime ("teşekkürler"), İngilizcede birden çok kalıba karşılık gelir ve yanlış register seçmek garip durur (arkadaşına "I am most grateful" demek gibi).
- Özre karşılık ile teşekküre karşılık farklıdır: Türkçede ikisine de "rica ederim" diyebiliriz ama İngilizcede özre "You're welcome" demek YANLIŞTIR.
- Edat (preposition) seçimi tuzaklıdır: sorry for + -ing, sorry about + isim, thank you for + -ing/isim. Türkçe düşünen öğrenci "sorry to being late" gibi hatalar yapar.
- "Sorry" hem gerçek pişmanlık hem de nazik geçiştirme ("Sorry, we're closed") anlamına gelebilir; ton her şeyi değiştirir.
This topic is not a grammatical tense, but a communicative function. That is, "apologizing" and "thanking" are a set of phrases we use to achieve a specific purpose in language, just like requests and offers. The important thing is not to memorize a single "correct sentence", but to recognize a range that serves the same purpose and to know which one to choose in which situation.
The glue of human relationships is these two functions. The thing that repairs the relationship when you make a mistake is an apology; the thing that nourishes the relationship when someone does you a favor is a thank you. In cultures where English is spoken, these two phrases are used much more frequently and much more automatically than in Turkish: the British reflexively say "Sorry" even with the slightest contact, and Americans say "Thank you so much" for the smallest favor. Using these sparingly can lead to being perceived as cold, rude, or ungrateful.
Similar in Turkish
In Turkish, we have words like "I'm sorry / pardon / excuse me" and "thank you / thanks / I appreciate it" and they also have different levels of formality ("excuse me" is casual, "I'm sorry" is neutral, "I'm sorry sir" is formal). English works exactly like this. Therefore, the logic will feel familiar to you; what you need to learn is which English phrase corresponds to which tone in Turkish.
Why is it difficult?
- A single word in Turkish ("thank you") corresponds to multiple phrases in English, and choosing the wrong register feels awkward (like saying "I am most grateful" to a friend).
- Responding to an apology is different from responding to a thank you: in Turkish, we can say "You're welcome" for both, but in English, saying "You're welcome" to an apology is WRONG.
- Choosing prepositions is tricky: sorry for + -ing, sorry about + noun, thank you for + -ing/noun. A student thinking in Turkish might make mistakes like "sorry to being late".
- "Sorry" can mean both genuine regret and polite dismissal ("Sorry, we're closed"); tone changes everything.
- Özür = sorry / apologize; Teşekkür = thank you / thanks / appreciate. Bunlar zaman değil, işlevdir.
- Özürde gerekçe eklemek için: Sorry + cümle ("Sorry I'm late") ya da Sorry for + V-ing ("Sorry for being late").
- Teşekkürde sebep eklemek için: Thank you for + V-ing/isim ("Thanks for coming", "Thanks for the coffee").
- Resmiyet arttıkça kalıp uzar: Sorry → I'm sorry → I apologize → Please accept my apologies.
- Teşekkürde de: Thanks → Thank you → Thank you so much → I really appreciate it → I'm most grateful.
- Özre karşılık: No worries / It's fine / Don't worry about it (asla "You're welcome" değil).
- Teşekküre karşılık: You're welcome / No problem / My pleasure / Don't mention it.
- appreciate daima bir nesne ister: I appreciate it, çıplak "I appreciate." yanlıştır.
- İngilizcede bu kalıplar Türkçeden daha sık ve daha otomatik kullanılır; cimri davranma.
appreciate tek başına asılı kalmaz — daima bir nesne ister: I appreciate it doğru, çıplak I appreciate yarım cümledir.
- Apology = sorry / apologize; Thank you = thank you / thanks / appreciate. These are not tenses, but functions.
- To add justification to an apology: Sorry + sentence ("Sorry I'm late") or Sorry for + V-ing ("Sorry for being late").
- To add a reason to a thank you: Thank you for + V-ing/noun ("Thanks for coming", "Thanks for the coffee").
- As formality increases, the phrase lengthens: Sorry → I'm sorry → I apologize → Please accept my apologies.
- In thanking as well: Thanks → Thank you → Thank you so much → I really appreciate it → I'm most grateful.
- Response to an apology: No worries / It's fine / Don't worry about it (never "You're welcome").
- Response to a thank you: You're welcome / No problem / My pleasure / Don't mention it.
- appreciate always requires an object: I appreciate it, bare I appreciate is incorrect.
- In English, these phrases are used more frequently and more automatically than in Turkish; don't be stingy with them.
appreciate does not stand alone — it always requires an object: I appreciate it is correct, bare I appreciate is an incomplete sentence.
Bu bir işlev olduğu için "olumlu/olumsuz/soru" yerine, kalıpların nasıl kurulduğunu ve nasıl genişletildiğini görmek daha yararlı. İki temel iskelet var: özür iskeleti ve teşekkür iskeleti. Her ikisi de kısa bir çekirdekten başlar ve gerekçeyle uzar.
Özrün kuruluşu
Formül 1: (I'm) sorry + (bağımsız cümle) — "Sorry I'm late." Burada "that" düşer, doğrudan bir cümle eklenir. Formül 2: Sorry / I apologize + for + V-ing — "Sorry for being late." Formül 3: Sorry + about + isim — "Sorry about the mess." for genelde bir eylemi (fiil), about genelde bir durumu/nesneyi (isim) takip eder.
- Çekirdekle başla: (I'm) sorry.
- Doğrudan cümle ekle: Sorry I'm late.
- Ya da gerekçeyi edatla bağla: for + fiil-ing, about + isim.
- Resmiyet gerekiyorsa uzat: I apologize for the confusion.
Teşekkürün kuruluşu
Formül 1: Thank you / Thanks (tek başına). Formül 2: Thank you for + V-ing / isim — "Thanks for helping", "Thanks for the ride." Formül 3: I appreciate + nesne — "I appreciate it / your help." Formül 4 (resmi): I'm grateful for + isim.
| Durum | Çekirdek | Genişletilmiş |
|---|---|---|
| Özür (nötr) | Sorry. | I'm sorry for the mistake. |
| Özür (resmi) | I apologize. | Please accept my apologies. |
| Teşekkür (nötr) | Thanks. | Thank you so much for your help. |
| Teşekkür (resmi) | I'm grateful. | I'm most grateful for your assistance. |
| Özre karşılık | No worries. | Don't worry about it, it happens. |
| Teşekküre karşılık | You're welcome. | It was my pleasure to help. |
Since this is a function, it is more useful to see how the phrases are constructed and how they are expanded instead of just using "positive/negative/question". There are two basic structures: apology structure and thank you structure. Both start from a short core and expand with justification.
Structure of the Apology
Formula 1: (I'm) sorry + (independent clause) — "Sorry I'm late." Here, "that" is omitted, and a direct sentence is added. Formula 2: Sorry / I apologize + for + V-ing — "Sorry for being late." Formula 3: Sorry + about + noun — "Sorry about the mess." for usually follows an action (verb), about usually follows a situation/object (noun).
- Start with the core: (I'm) sorry.
- Add a direct sentence: Sorry I'm late.
- Or connect the justification with a preposition: for + verb-ing, about + noun.
- If formality is needed, extend: I apologize for the confusion.
Structure of the Thank You
Formula 1: Thank you / Thanks (alone). Formula 2: Thank you for + V-ing / noun — "Thanks for helping", "Thanks for the ride." Formula 3: I appreciate + object — "I appreciate it / your help." Formula 4 (formal): I'm grateful for + noun.
| Situation | Core | Expanded |
|---|---|---|
| Apology (neutral) | Sorry. | I'm sorry for the mistake. |
| Apology (formal) | I apologize. | Please accept my apologies. |
| Thank you (neutral) | Thanks. | Thank you so much for your help. |
| Thank you (formal) | I'm grateful. | I'm most grateful for your assistance. |
| Response to an apology | No worries. | Don't worry about it, it happens. |
| Response to thanks | You're welcome. | It was my pleasure to help. |
3) Dikkat çekme / araya girme ("excuse me" ile sınır)
Birine çarptığında veya rahatsız ettiğinde "sorry" kullanılır; ama dikkat çekmek/araya girmek için genelde excuse me tercih edilir. Ayrıntı için bkz. Günlük İfadeler.
4) İyilik / hediye / yardım için teşekkür
5) Bir teklifi kabul/ret ederken teşekkür
6) Yazılı/resmi teşekkür (e-posta, mektup)
1) Apology after a real mistake (most common)
Used when you do something wrong, upset someone, or fail to keep a promise. Usually, a justification or offer of compensation is added. This is the heart of the function.
2) Polite softening / delivering bad news ("soft" sorry)
Here, there is no real regret; "sorry" is a politeness buffer to soften the news. Similar to "excuse me, but..." in Turkish.
3) Attention grabbing / interrupting (limited to "excuse me")
When you bump into someone or disturb them, "sorry" is used; but to grab attention/interject, excuse me is generally preferred. For details, see Everyday Expressions.
4) Thanking for kindness / gift / help
5) Thanking when accepting/refusing an offer
6) Written/formal thank you (email, letter)
Bu işlevde "zaman zarfı" değil, kalıbı tetikleyen sinyal ifadeler ve güçlendirici kelimeler önemlidir. Bir cümlede bunları görürsen özür/teşekkür işlevindesin demektir.
| İfade | İşlev | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| so / really / terribly / awfully | Özrü/teşekkürü güçlendirir | I'm terribly sorry. / Thanks so much. |
| I'm afraid... | Kötü haber/kibar ret sinyali | I'm afraid I can't make it. |
| for + V-ing / about + isim | Özür/teşekkür gerekçesi | Sorry for shouting. / Thanks for the tip. |
| Please accept... | Çok resmi özür açılışı | Please accept my apologies. |
| I just wanted to say... | Teşekkürü yumuşak açar | I just wanted to say thank you. |
| It means a lot | Derin minnettarlık | Thank you — it really means a lot. |
In this function, it is not the "adverb of time" but the signal expressions and intensifying words that are important. If you see these in a sentence, it means you are in the function of apology/thank you.
| Expression | Function | Example |
|---|---|---|
| so / really / terribly / awfully | Intensifies the apology/thank you | I'm terribly sorry. / Thanks so much. |
| I'm afraid... | Signal for bad news/polite refusal | I'm afraid I can't make it. |
| for + V-ing / about + noun | Justification for apology/thank you | Sorry for shouting. / Thanks for the tip. |
| Please accept... | Very formal apology opening | Please accept my apologies. |
| I just wanted to say... | Softly opens the thank you | I just wanted to say thank you. |
| It means a lot | Deep gratitude | Thank you — it really means a lot. |
Samimiyet derecesi: "Sorry" tek başına hafif kalabilir; gerçekten içten bir özür için güçlendirici ve gerekçe eklenir: "I'm so sorry — I really messed up." Çıplak "sorry", ciddi bir hatada yetersiz ve hatta umursamaz algılanabilir.
Bakış açısı ve sorumluluk: "I apologize" doğrudan sorumluluk alır (ben yaptım). "I'm sorry that happened" ise olaya üzülür ama suçu üstlenmeyebilir — bu ayrım özellikle resmi/hukuki bağlamda önemlidir.
Teşekkürde sıcaklık: "Thanks" nötr, "Thank you so much" sıcak, "I can't thank you enough" abartılı/çok içten. "I appreciate it" ise sakin ama gerçek bir minnettarlık verir; iş ortamında çok makbuldür.
Degree of sincerity: "Sorry" alone may feel light; for a truly heartfelt apology, a strengthening phrase and justification are added: "I'm so sorry — I really messed up." Bare "sorry" can be perceived as insufficient and even careless in a serious mistake.
Perspective and responsibility: "I apologize" takes direct responsibility (I did it). "I'm sorry that happened" expresses regret about the event but may not take the blame — this distinction is especially important in formal/legal contexts.
Warmth in gratitude: "Thanks" is neutral, "Thank you so much" is warm, "I can't thank you enough" is exaggerated/very heartfelt. "I appreciate it" conveys calm but genuine gratitude; it is very acceptable in a work environment.
English
İkiye ayrılır: özre No worries, teşekküre You're welcome.
- Türkçe "için" → İngilizce "for", ama for + V-ing: "geldiğin için" → "for coming" (for to come DEĞİL).
- Türkçe "özür dilerim" tek kalıp; İngilizcede register'a göre sorry / apologize / apologies seçilir.
- Türkçe "rica ederim" hem özre hem teşekküre uyar; İngilizcede özre No worries, teşekküre You're welcome.
- Türkçe "teşekkür ederim" fiil-benzeri; İngilizce "thank you" aslında "I thank you"nun kısaltmasıdır, ama "thanks" isim/ünlemdir.
The logic of Turkish and English is similar, but the prepositions and response systems are different. The Turkish preposition "için" overlaps with both "sorry for" and "thank you for", so it is easy to construct the "for" part correctly; the real trap comes with the -ing that follows. Additionally, in Turkish, we can say "rica ederim" for both apologies and thanks — in English, these two are separated.
Turkish
Single equivalent: "rica ederim" applies to both apologies and thanks.
English
Divided: for apologies No worries, for thanks You're welcome.
- Turkish "için" → English "for", but for + V-ing: "geldiğin için" → "for coming" (not for to come).
- Turkish "özür dilerim" is a single phrase; in English, it is chosen according to register sorry / apologize / apologies.
- Turkish "rica ederim" applies to both apologies and thanks; in English, for apologies No worries, for thanks You're welcome.
- Turkish "teşekkür ederim" is verb-like; English "thank you" is actually a contraction of "I thank you", but "thanks" is a noun/interjection.
| İşlev | Ne zaman | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| Apologizing (sorry) | Bir hata / rahatsızlık sonrası pişmanlık | Sorry I'm late. |
| Excuse me | Dikkat çekme, geçme, araya girme (henüz hata yokken) | Excuse me, is this seat free? |
| Requests / Offers | Bir şey isterken veya teklif ederken | Could you help me? (bkz. Rica & Teklif) |
| Thanking | Bir iyilik/hediye/yardım sonrası minnet | Thanks for helping. |
| Everyday expressions | Selam, iyi dilek, günlük kalıplar | Take care! (bkz. Günlük İfadeler) |
| Function | When | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Apologizing (sorry) | Regret after a mistake / inconvenience | Sorry I'm late. |
| Excuse me | Attracting attention, passing by, interrupting (before any mistake) | Excuse me, is this seat free? |
| Requests / Offers | When asking for something or making an offer | Could you help me? (see Requests & Offers) |
| Thanking | Gratitude after a favor/gift/help | Thanks for helping. |
| Everyday expressions | Greetings, good wishes, daily phrases | Take care! (see Everyday Expressions) |
Bazı kalıplar genel kurala uymaz; ezberlenmeleri gerekir. Bunlar aslında "donmuş ifadelerdir" (fixed expressions) ve içindeki kelimeleri ayrı ayrı çözümlemeye çalışmak yanıltır.

Resmi yazıda gündelik kalıplar (My bad, Cheers, Thanks a million) tamamen dışarıda kalır. Yerlerini uzun, mesafeli ve tam cümleli kalıplar alır. Özürde sorumluluk açık dille üstlenilir; teşekkürde "gratitude, appreciation, grateful" gibi resmi kelimeler kullanılır. E-posta ve akademik metin (tez teşekkür sayfası, kapak mektubu) için bu register şarttır.
Kurumsal özür
Sorumluluk mesafeli ve tam cümleyle üstlenilir: Please accept our sincere apologies.
Resmî teşekkür
Gündelik kelime yerine gratitude, grateful, appreciation tercih edilir.
Kötü haber kalıbı
Olumsuzluk yumuşatılır: We regret to inform you...
- "Thank you for taking the time to..." resmi teşekkürün klasik açılışıdır (for + V-ing).
- "I am writing to apologize for..." resmi e-postada özrün amacını en baştan bildirir.
- "any inconvenience this may have caused" edilgen ve mesafeli; kurumsal özür dili.
- "I am also very grateful for..." — grateful sıfatı be fiiliyle doğru kullanılmış (appreciate DEĞİL).
- "I appreciate the detailed comments" — appreciate nesne almış (the comments); çıplak değil.
- "Please accept my apologies" en resmi özür kalıbıdır; kapanışta tekrar özür + teşekkür dengesi kurulmuş.
- "thank you again for your understanding" — understanding (isim), understand değil; yaygın hatadan kaçınılmış.

Aşağıdaki sorular kuralı değil, anlamı ve işlevi yoklar. Cümlenin özür mü teşekkür mü olduğunu, samimi mi geçiştirme mi olduğunu düşün.
- "I'm sorry, but the store is closed." — Gerçek pişmanlık mı?Hayır. Burada "sorry" kötü haberi yumuşatan nazik bir tampondur; satıcı mağazanın kapalı olmasından pişman değildir.
- "I can't thank you enough." — Bu nötr bir teşekkür mü, güçlü bir minnet mi?Çok güçlü, duygusal bir minnettarlık. "Sana ne kadar teşekkür etsem az" anlamında; "thanks"ten çok daha yoğundur.
- Biri "Sorry!" dedi, sen "You're welcome" desen doğru mu?Hayır. Özre "You're welcome" denmez; "No worries / It's fine / Don't worry about it" denir. "You're welcome" sadece teşekküre verilir.
- "I'm sorry that you feel that way." — Konuşan suçu üstleniyor mu?Hayır, tam olarak değil. Bu kalıp karşı tarafın hissine üzüldüğünü söyler ama hatayı net üstlenmez; bazen savuşturucu bir özür olarak algılanır.
- "Thank God!" bir kişiye teşekkür müdür?Hayır. "Thank God" bir donmuş ifadedir, "çok şükür / iyi ki" anlamına gelir; belirli birine teşekkür değildir.
The following questions do not check the rule, but rather check meaning and function. Consider whether the sentence is an apology or a thank you, whether it is sincere or dismissive.
- "I'm sorry, but the store is closed." — Is this real regret? No. Here, "sorry" is a polite buffer softening the bad news; the seller is not regretful about the store being closed.
- "I can't thank you enough." — Is this a neutral thank you or strong gratitude?Very strong, emotional gratitude. It means "no matter how much I thank you, it's not enough"; it is much more intense than "thanks".
- Someone said "Sorry!", is it correct for you to say "You're welcome"?No. You do not say "You're welcome" to an apology; you say "No worries / It's fine / Don't worry about it". "You're welcome" is only given in response to thanks.
- "I'm sorry that you feel that way." — Is the speaker taking the blame? No, not exactly. This phrase expresses sadness for the other person's feelings but does not clearly take the blame; it can sometimes be perceived as a defensive apology.
- Is "Thank God!" a thank you to a person? No. "Thank God" is a fixed expression, meaning "thank goodness / I'm glad"; it is not a thank you to a specific person.

Görev: Bir arkadaşının doğum günü partisini kaçırdın. Ona kısa bir mesaj (WhatsApp) ve bir de partiye ev sahipliği yapan onun annesine kısa bir e-posta yaz. İki metin de özür içermeli; e-posta daha resmi olmalı. Ayrıca sana anlayış gösterdikleri için teşekkür et.
- Rehber sorular: Neden kaçırdın (gerekçe)? Nasıl telafi edeceksin? Hangi register (arkadaş vs anne)?
- Arkadaşa: gündelik kalıp kullan (Sorry / My bad / really / appreciate it).
- Anneye: resmi kalıp kullan (I apologize / I'm grateful / Please accept my apologies).
- Her iki metinde en az bir "for + V-ing" yapısı kur.
- Arkadaşa mesajHeyy, I am so sorry I missed your party last night! I got stuck at work and my phone died — no excuse, I know. I feel awful. Let me take you out for coffee this weekend to make up for it. Thanks for understanding, and happy birthday again! 🎂 I really appreciate you not being mad at me.
- Anneye e-postaDear Mrs. Demir, I am writing to apologize for missing Selin's birthday celebration yesterday. I was unexpectedly held up at work, and I am truly sorry for not letting you know in time. Thank you so much for hosting such a lovely evening, and I'm very grateful for your understanding. Please accept my apologies once again. Warm regards, Kerem
Task: You missed a friend's birthday party. Write a short message (WhatsApp) to them and a short email to their mother who hosted the party. Both texts should include an apology; the email should be more formal. Also, thank them for their understanding.
- Guiding questions: Why did you miss it (reason)? How will you make it up? Which register (friend vs mother)?
- To the friend: use informal phrases (Sorry / My bad / really / appreciate it).
- To the mother: use formal phrases (I apologize / I'm grateful / Please accept my apologies).
- In both texts, include at least one "for + V-ing" structure.
- Message to the friendHeyy, I am so sorry I missed your party last night! I got stuck at work and my phone died — no excuse, I know. I feel awful. Let me take you out for coffee this weekend to make up for it. Thanks for understanding, and happy birthday again! 🎂 I really appreciate you not being mad at me.
- Email to the motherDear Mrs.
Kavram kontrol soruları (öğretmen için): Tahtaya "Sorry!" yaz ve sor: "Cevabı ne? You're welcome mi?" (Hayır — No worries). Sonra "Thank you!" yaz: "Şimdi You're welcome doğru mu?" (Evet). Bu karşıtlık ayrımı çivi gibi çakar. Ardından "for come / for coming" ikilisini göster ve hep birlikte "edattan sonra -ING" diye tekrarlat.
Etkinlik önerileri: (1) Rol yapma kartları: her karta bir durum yaz (kahve döktün / hediye aldın / geç kaldın), öğrenciler uygun kalıp + karşılığı canlandırsın. (2) Register sıralama: "My bad → Sorry → I'm sorry → I apologize → Please accept my apologies" kartlarını gündelikten resmiye dizdir. (3) E-posta yazma: aynı özrü hem arkadaşa hem patrona yazdır, farkı tartışın.
Concept check questions (for teachers): Write "Sorry!" on the board and ask: "What is the response? Is it You're welcome?" (No — No worries). Then write "Thank you!": "Is You're welcome correct now?" (Yes). This contrast distinction will stick. Then show the pair "for come / for coming" and have everyone repeat "after the preposition -ING".
Activity suggestions: (1) Role-play cards: write a situation on each card (spilled coffee / received a gift / arrived late), students should act out the appropriate phrase + response. (2) Register ordering: have students arrange the cards "My bad → Sorry → I'm sorry → I apologize → Please accept my apologies" from informal to formal. (3) Email writing: have students write the same apology to both a friend and a boss, discuss the difference.
- Özür ve teşekkür birer iletişim işlevidir; doğru kalıp register'a, ilişkiye ve durumun ağırlığına göre seçilir.
- Özür merdiveni: My bad → Sorry → I'm sorry → I apologize → Please accept my apologies (gündelikten resmiye).
- Teşekkür merdiveni: Thanks → Thank you → Thank you so much → I really appreciate it → I'm most grateful.
- Gerekçe için: for + V-ing (for coming), about + isim (about the noise). Edattan sonra fiil DAİMA -ing.
- appreciate nesne ister (appreciate it); grateful sıfattır ve be fiiliyle kullanılır (I'm grateful).
- Özre karşılık: No worries / Don't worry about it / It's fine. Teşekküre karşılık: You're welcome / No problem / My pleasure — ikisini karıştırma.
- "Sorry" her zaman pişmanlık değildir; kötü haberi yumuşatabilir veya (yükselen tonla) "Efendim?" olabilir.
- İlgili işlevler: Rica & Teklif, Günlük İfadeler, Sohbet Başlatma.
- Apologies and thanks are both communication functions; the correct phrase is chosen according to the register, relationship, and the seriousness of the situation.
- Apology ladder: My bad → Sorry → I'm sorry → I apologize → Please accept my apologies (from informal to formal).
- Thank you ladder: Thanks → Thank you → Thank you so much → I really appreciate it → I'm most grateful.
- For justification: for + V-ing (for coming), about + noun (about the noise). After a preposition, the verb is ALWAYS -ing.
- appreciate requires an object (appreciate it); grateful is an adjective and is used with the verb to be (I'm grateful).
- Responses to apologies: No worries / Don't worry about it / It's fine. Responses to thanks: You're welcome / No problem / My pleasure — do not mix the two.
- "Sorry" is not always regret; it can soften bad news or (with a rising tone) mean "Excuse me?".
