B2 First Nedir, Kimin İçin?

What Is B2 First, and Who Is It For?

B2 First shows that you can use English independently in everyday life, at work and in study. It corresponds to level B2 on the CEFR: you can communicate fluently and naturally with a native speaker, grasp the main ideas of complex texts, and write clear, detailed texts. Many universities, employers and immigration authorities accept the certificate as proof of English proficiency.

The exam can be taken on paper or computer; content and scoring are identical, with results simply arriving faster in the computer-based session. The format has been largely stable since the 2015 revision; even so, confirm the exact timings and question counts on the current official Cambridge English page before you sit the exam.

This is the most technical paper: it tests grammatical accuracy, vocabulary depth and reading speed together. Each of the seven parts demands a different skill:

Writing — İki Görev, Net Yapı

Writing — Two Tasks, Clear Structure

Writing has two tasks, each requiring 140-190 words. Part 1 is always an essay and is compulsory: you are given a topic and two ideas, and you develop an opinion and add a third idea of your own. In Part 2 you choose a type: article, email/letter, report or review. Each type has its own tone, structure and reader.

Listening ve Speaking

Listening and Speaking

Listening is about 40 minutes and has four parts: multiple choice on short dialogues, sentence completion on a monologue, multiple choice on a longer recording, and speaker matching (multiple matching). Each recording is played twice. The most critical skill is reading the questions before the audio starts and predicting what you will hear.

Speaking is about 14 minutes and is usually taken in pairs: two candidates, two examiners. There are four parts: introductory questions, comparing a photo on your own (~1 min long turn), a collaborative task discussed by the candidates together, and a deeper discussion of the topic. Marking rests on four criteria: grammar and vocabulary, discourse management, pronunciation and interaction.

Puanlama — Cambridge English Scale

Scoring — The Cambridge English Scale

B2 First is reported on the Cambridge English Scale. Each skill receives its own score, and their average forms the overall score. Typical ranges for B2 First are below (confirm exact thresholds on the official Cambridge page):

So 160 and above means a B2 First certificate; score 180+ and your certificate also certifies the level above (C1). Below 160, the exam still reports a B1 proficiency level. The certificate never expires.
