Cambridge B1 Preliminary (formerly PET — Preliminary English Test) is an intermediate (CEFR B1) qualification proving that you can use English practically in everyday life. The certificate never expires. This page walks through the three papers updated in the 2020 revision, the scoring and the path to preparing, all at a glance.

B1 Preliminary shows that you can get by in English in most everyday situations: you can talk about familiar topics, understand simple texts, write a personal letter or email, and follow a conversation. It maps to level B1 on the CEFR scale and is often a strong stepping stone on the way to B2 First (FCE).
The exam can be taken on paper or computer, and there is also a B1 Preliminary for Schools version for schools (the same format, with topics suited to younger learners). The format has been current since the 2020 revision; confirm the exact timings and question counts on the official Cambridge page before you sit the exam.

The 2020 revision split Reading and Writing into separate papers. Today the exam consists of three main papers (with Speaking included, four skills are assessed):

Separate scores are given for Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking, and the overall score is their average. Neglecting a single paper pulls your total result straight down.

Özellikle eşleştirme partlarında metnin tamamını okumak zaman kaybettirir. Önce ne aradığını belirle, sonra o bilgiyi tarayarak (scanning) bul.
The Reading paper measures reading comprehension and basic grammar/vocabulary through everyday texts (signs, messages, notices, short pieces). The six parts each call for a different skill:

Reading the whole text — especially in the matching parts — wastes time. Decide what you are looking for first, then scan to find that information.

Writing consists of two tasks, each requiring about 100 words. Part 1 is an email: you are given a short prompt (an email and notes) and write a reply in an appropriate tone that addresses every point. In Part 2 you choose to write either an article or a story.
Address all four of the given notes; choose your tone to suit the reader (a friend/an organisation); don't forget the greeting and sign-off.

…and I never forgot that day.If you skip one of the notes in Part 1, your content mark drops. Get close to the word count but don't get stuck on it; what really matters is completing the task in full and getting the tone right.

Listening lasts about 30 minutes and has four parts: multiple choice with pictures, choosing an answer in short monologues, gap fill (sentence completion) and multiple choice in a longer recording. Each recording is played twice; reading the questions in advance and marking key words is the most effective technique.
Speaking lasts about 12-17 minutes and is usually done in pairs. There are four parts: personal questions, describing a photograph on your own, the candidates discussing a situation together (a collaborative task) and a general conversation about the topic. Assessment covers grammar/vocabulary, discourse management, pronunciation and interaction.
In the description part, start with a word you know (In this photo I can see…), then add location (in the background / on the left) and a guess (they might be…). Speaking simply but continuously, rather than falling silent, protects your fluency mark.

B1 Preliminary is scored on the Cambridge English Scale. The four skills are scored separately and their average gives the overall score. Typical ranges (confirm the exact thresholds on the official page):

So 160 and above means a B1 Preliminary certificate; score 160+ and it also certifies the level above (B2). If you fall below 140, the exam gives an A2 proficiency report. The certificate never expires.

B1 Preliminary calls for solid basic grammar and an everyday vocabulary. The most productive approach is to work on the four skills together and regularly:
Tenses, prepositions, comparison, basic modals and connectors — these are tested constantly in Reading Part 6 and in writing.
Gather word phrases around familiar themes such as family, travel, shopping and technology; learn them as chunks, not one by one.
The email is compulsory; strengthen whichever of article and story you feel more comfortable with, but write each at least once.
Start with slow, clear English recordings; build the habit of reading the questions first right from the outset.
