Quantifiers, yani miktar belirteçleri, bir ismin önüne gelip o isimden ne kadar ya da kaç tane olduğunu söyleyen sözcüklerdir. Türkçede "çok, biraz, az, birkaç, yeterince, bol bol" dediğimizde tam olarak bu işi yaparız. İngilizcede de much, many, a lot of, a few, little, some, any, enough, plenty of gibi sözcükler aynı görevi üstlenir.
Baştaki "a" varsa
a few (sayılabilir) ve a little (sayılamaz) "az ama var, idare eder" der; tonu olumludur. Örn. I have a few friends → birkaç arkadaşım var.
Baştaki "a" yoksa
few ve little "neredeyse yok, yetersiz" der; tonu olumsuzdur. Örn. I have few friends → neredeyse hiç arkadaşım yok.
Quantifiers, that is, quantity determiners, come before a noun and tell how much or how many there is — they are the words that express this. In Turkish, when we say "çok, biraz, az, birkaç, yeterince, bol bol" we do exactly this job. In English too, words like much, many, a lot of, a few, little, some, any, enough, plenty of take on the same role.
So why a separate topic? Because in Turkish the word "çok" works with everything: çok kitap, çok su, çok insan, çok zaman. English, however, makes you change the quantity word depending on whether the noun is countable or uncountable . For "çok kitap" you say many books, for "çok su" you say much water . A single Turkish word splits into two, even three, in English. This is exactly what makes the topic "hard".
The second difficulty is even sneakier: putting a tiny a in front of the same word can reverse its meaning. a few friends means "a few friends (present, good)", whereas few friends means "very few friends (almost none, bad)". A Turkish-thinking learner easily drops this aand, without noticing, turns a positive sentence into a negative complaint.
If there is an "a" at the start
a few (countable) and a little (uncountable) say "little but present, it'll do"; the tone is positive. E.g. I have a few friends → I have a few friends (some — fine).
If there is no "a" at the start
few and little say "almost none, insufficient"; the tone is negative. E.g. I have few friends → I have almost no friends.
- Miktar belirteci ismin önüne gelir ve ne kadar / kaç tane olduğunu söyler: many, much, a lot of, a few, few, a little, little, some, any, enough, plenty of, several.
- many + çoğul sayılabilir isim: many cars. much + sayılamaz isim: much water.
- a lot of / lots of her ikisiyle de çalışır ve olumlu cümlede en doğal seçenektir: a lot of cars, a lot of water.
- much ve many, olumsuz ve soru cümlelerinde daha doğaldır: I don't have much time. How many books?
- a few (birkaç, olumlu) ↔ few (çok az, olumsuz) — sayılabilir isimlerle.
- a little (biraz, olumlu) ↔ little (çok az, olumsuz) — sayılamaz isimlerle.
- enough = yeterince; isimden önce ama sıfattan sonra gelir: enough money / warm enough.
- plenty of = bol bol, ihtiyaçtan fazla (olumlu ton): plenty of time.
- Soru kalıbı: sayılabilir için How many...?, sayılamaz için How much...?
- Bu konu some / any / no ve Sayılabilir & Sayılamayan konularıyla birlikte öğrenilir.
- A quantifier comes before the noun and tells how much / how many there is: many, much, a lot of, a few, few, a little, little, some, any, enough, plenty of, several.
- many + plural countable noun: many cars. much + uncountable noun: much water.
- a lot of / lots of works with both and is the most natural choice in affirmative sentences: a lot of cars, a lot of water.
- much and manyare more natural in negative and question sentences: I don't have much time. How many books?
- a few (a few, positive) ↔ few (very few, negative) — with countable nouns.
- a little (a little, positive) ↔ little (very little, negative) — with uncountable nouns.
- enough = 'enough'. Position: before the noun but after the adjective : enough money / warm enough.
- plenty of = plenty, more than needed (positive tone): plenty of time.
- Question pattern: for countable use How many...?, for uncountable use How much...?
- This topic is learned together with the topics some / any / no and Countable & Uncountable .
Miktar belirteçleri özneye göre çekilmez, ekle bozulmaz; sadece doğru sözcüğü doğru isim türüyle ve doğru cümle bağlamıyla eşleştirmen yeterlidir. Aşağıda üç bağlamı ayrı ayrı görelim.
Olumlu cümle
Formül: Özne + fiil + a lot of / lots of / plenty of / a few / a little + isim. Olumlu cümlede much ve many (özellikle much) kulağa biraz resmî/kitabi gelir; günlük dilde yerlerini a lot of alır.
Olumsuz cümle
Formül: Özne + don't/doesn't + fiil + much / many / any + isim. Olumsuzlukta much ve many çok doğaldır; ayrıca any devreye girer (bkz. some / any / no).
Soru cümlesi
Formül: How many + çoğul isim ...? (sayılabilir) / How much + sayılamaz isim ...? Ayrıca Do you have many/much ...? gibi evet-hayır soruları da doğaldır.
| Bağlam | Sayılabilir | Sayılamaz |
|---|---|---|
| Olumlu (doğal) | a lot of / a few | a lot of / a little |
| Olumsuz | many / any | much / any |
| Soru | How many / many | How much / much |
Quantifiers are not conjugated for the subject and take no ending; you only need to match the right word with the right noun type and the right sentence context . Below let's look at the three contexts one by one.
Affirmative sentence
Formula: Subject + verb + a lot of / lots of / plenty of / a few / a little + noun. In affirmative sentences much and many (especially much) sound a little formal/bookish; in everyday language their place is taken by a lot of .
Negative sentence
Formula: Subject + don't/doesn't + verb + much / many / any + noun. In negatives much and many are very natural; also any comes into play (see some / any / no).
Question sentence
Formula: How many + plural noun ...? (countable) / How much + uncountable noun ...? Also, Do you have many/much ...? and similar yes-no questions are also natural.
| Context | Countable | Uncountable |
|---|---|---|
| Affirmative (natural) | a lot of / a few | a lot of / a little |
| Negative | many / any | much / any |
| Question | How many / many | How much / much |
1) Büyük miktar: much / many / a lot of / lots of
En yaygın kullanım büyük bir miktar ya da sayı bildirmektir. Günlük konuşmada olumlu cümlede neredeyse her zaman a lot of / lots of duyarsın; much/many ise olumsuz ve soruların doğal sahibidir. lots of, a lot of'un biraz daha samimi/konuşma dili hâlidir.
2) Küçük ama yeterli miktar: a few / a little
"Az ama var, idare eder" demek istediğinde bu ikiliyi kullanırsın. a few sayılabilir isimlerle (a few chairs), a little sayılamaz isimlerle (a little salt) gelir. Ton olumludur: elimizde bir şey var demektir.
3) Yetersiz derecede az: few / little
Baştaki a düşünce ton tersine döner: few ve little "beklenenden/gerekenden çok daha az, neredeyse yok" der. Bu kullanım resmî ve biraz olumsuz/şikâyetçidir; günlük konuşmada çoğu kişi bunun yerine not many / not much / hardly any demeyi tercih eder.
4) Yeterlilik ve bolluk: enough / plenty of
enough "ihtiyacı karşılayacak kadar" demektir; isimden önce (enough chairs) ama sıfat/zarftan sonra (warm enough, quickly enough) gelir. plenty of ise "bol bol, fazlasıyla" der ve rahatlatıcı bir tonu vardır.
5) Belirsiz orta miktar: some / any / several
some (olumlu) ve any (olumsuz/soru) belirsiz bir miktarı gösterir; detay some / any / no konusundadır. several ise "birkaç, birçok" arası, a few'dan biraz daha fazlasını ima eder ve sadece sayılabilir isimlerle kullanılır.
6) Bütünün tamamı/çoğu: all / most / the majority of (C1)
İleri düzeyde bütünle ilişki kuran belirteçler devreye girer: all (hepsi), most (çoğu), the majority of (büyük çoğunluğu). Akademik yazıda genelleme yaparken çok işine yarar.
1) Large quantity: much / many / a lot of / lots of
The most common use is to express a large amount or number. In everyday speech, in affirmative sentences, you almost always hear a lot of / lots of ; much/many on the other hand, naturally belong to negatives and questions. lots of, a lot ofis a slightly more casual/colloquial version of a lot of.
2) Small but sufficient quantity: a few / a little
When you want to say "little but present, it'll do", you use this pair. a few goes with countable nouns (a few chairs), a little goes with uncountable nouns (a little salt). The tone is positive: it means we have something.
3) Insufficiently little: few / little
When the initial a is dropped, the tone reverses: few and little say "far less than expected/needed, almost none". This use is formal and a bit negative/complaining; in everyday speech most people instead say not many / not much / hardly any .
4) Sufficiency and abundance: enough / plenty of
enough means "as much as meets the need"; before a noun (enough chairs) but after an adjective/adverb (warm enough, quickly enough). plenty of means "plenty, more than enough" and has a reassuring tone.
5) Indefinite mid-range quantity: some / any / several
some (positive) and any (negative/question) show an indefinite quantity; details are in the some / any / no topic. several on the other hand lies between "a few" and "many", a fewimplying a bit more than a few, and is used only with countable nouns.
6) All/most of a whole: all / most / the majority of (C1)
At an advanced level, determiners relating to the whole come into play: all (all of it), most (most), the majority of (the great majority). Very useful when generalising in academic writing.
Miktar belirteçlerinde "zaman ifadesi" yerine bağlam sinyalleri vardır: cümlenin olumlu mu olumsuz mu olduğu ve ismin türü, hangi belirteci seçeceğini büyük ölçüde belirler. Aşağıdaki tablo bu sinyalleri toparlıyor.
| Sinyal | Yönlendirir | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| Olumsuz (don't / isn't) | much / many / any | I don't have much time. |
| Soru (Do...? How...?) | much / many | How many tickets? |
| Olumlu düz cümle | a lot of / lots of | We have a lot of work. |
| Çoğul sayılabilir isim | many / a few / few / several | a few books |
| Sayılamaz isim | much / a little / little | a little milk |
| 'ihtiyaçtan fazla' vurgusu | plenty of | plenty of room |
| 'yeter kadar' vurgusu | enough | enough chairs |
With quantifiers, instead of "time expressions" there are context signals : whether the sentence is affirmative or negative and the type of noun largely determine which quantifier you choose. The table below gathers these signals.
| Signal | Points to | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Negative (don't / isn't) | much / many / any | I don't have much time. |
| Question (Do...? How...?) | much / many | How many tickets? |
| Plain affirmative sentence | a lot of / lots of | We have a lot of work. |
| Plural countable noun | many / a few / few / several | a few books |
| Uncountable noun | much / a little / little | a little milk |
| 'more than needed' emphasis | plenty of | plenty of room |
| 'just enough' emphasis | enough | enough chairs |
Aynı miktarı iki farklı belirteçle söylediğinde konuşmacının bakış açısı değişir. Bardağın yarısına a little water left dersen "iyi, hâlâ var" tonu, little water left dersen "kötü, neredeyse bitti" tonu verirsin. Yani sözcük seçimi sadece nesnel miktarı değil, senin o miktara iyimser mi kötümser mi baktığını da gösterir.
İkinci bir incelik nezaket ve yumuşatmadır. Bir şey rica ederken küçük bir miktar demek isteği daha kibar yapar: Could I have a little more time? Ayrıca sitem ederken a bit of (a little'ın gündelik hâli) sık geçer: a bit of help would be nice.
Üçüncüsü vurgu ve abartıdır. so much / so many ve too much / too many miktarı duygusal olarak büyütür: so many hayranlık/şaşkınlık, too many ise şikâyet katar. too her zaman "gereğinden fazla, sorun" anlamı taşır.
When you express the same quantity with two different quantifiers, the speaker's point of view changes. For a half-full glass, if you say a little water left you give an "it's fine, there's still some" tone; little water left if you say, you give a "bad, almost gone" tone. So word choice shows not just the objective quantity but also whether you view that quantity optimistically or pessimistically .
A second nuance is politeness and softening. Saying a small quantity when requesting something makes the request more polite: Could I have a little more time? Also, when reproaching, a bit of (the everyday form of a little) often appears: a bit of help would be nice.
The third is emphasis and exaggeration. so much / so many and too much / too many magnify the quantity emotionally: so many conveys admiration/surprise, too many conveys complaint. too always carries the meaning "more than needed, a problem".
Türkçe miktar sözcükleri, ismin sayılabilir olup olmamasına bakmaz. "Çok" hem "çok kitap" hem "çok su" için aynıdır; "biraz" hem "biraz elma" hem "biraz şeker" için aynıdır. İngilizce ise seni her seferinde ismin türünü düşünmeye zorlar. Bu tek fark, Türk öğrencinin en sık hatalarının kaynağıdır.
- Türkçe "çok" = İngilizce many (sayılabilir) veya much (sayılamaz) veya a lot of (ikisi). Tek kelime, üç karşılık.
- Türkçe "biraz" = a few (sayılabilir) veya a little (sayılamaz). İsmi say, ona göre seç.
- Türkçede miktar sözcüğünden sonra isim çoğul eki almaz ("çok kitap", "kitaplar" değil). İngilizcede ise sayılabilir isim çoğul olur: many books.
- Türkçede olumlu/olumsuz bağlam miktar sözcüğünü değiştirmez; İngilizcede much/many ↔ a lot of tercihi bağlama göre kayar.
Turkish quantity words do not look atwhether the noun is countable or not. "Çok" is the same for both "çok kitap" and "çok su"; "biraz" is the same for both "biraz elma" and "biraz şeker". English, however, forces you to think about the noun type every time. This single difference is the source of Turkish learners' most frequent mistakes.
- Turkish "çok" = English many (countable) or much (uncountable) or a lot of (both). One word, three equivalents.
- Turkish "biraz" = a few (countable) or a little (uncountable). Count the noun and choose accordingly.
- In Turkish, the noun after a quantity word takes no plural ending ("çok kitap", not "kitaplar"). In English, however, a countable noun becomes plural : many books.
- In Turkish, affirmative/negative context does not change the quantity word; in English, the much/many ↔ a lot of choice shifts by context.
Miktar belirteçleri, isimden önce gelen başka sözcük aileleriyle sık karışır. Aşağıdaki tablo, en çok karıştırılan komşuları ayırıyor.
| Yapı | Ne yapar | Örnek | Fark |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quantifiers (bu konu) | Miktar/sayı bildirir | many / a little / a lot of | Belirsiz miktar. |
| some / any / no | Belirsiz miktar (olumlu/olumsuz-soru ayrımı) | some milk / any milk | some=olumlu, any=olumsuz&soru. |
| Sayılabilir & Sayılamayan | İsmin türü (sayılabilir mi?) | a book / information | Belirteç seçimini bu belirler. |
| Artikeller | Belirlilik (a / an / the) | a book / the book | Miktar değil, belirlilik bildirir. |
| Sayılar (cardinal) | Tam sayı verir | three books | Kesin miktar; belirsizlik yok. |
Quantifiers are often confused with other word families that come before a noun. The table below separates the most commonly confused neighbours.
| Structure | What it does | Example | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quantifiers (this topic) | States quantity/number | many / a little / a lot of | Indefinite quantity. |
| some / any / no | Indefinite quantity (affirmative vs negative-question distinction) | some milk / any milk | some=affirmative, any=negative&question. |
| Countable & Uncountable | The noun type (is it countable?) | a book / information | This determines the quantifier choice. |
| Articles | Definiteness (a / an / the) | a book / the book | States definiteness, not quantity. |
| Numbers (cardinal) | Gives an exact number | three books | Exact quantity; no vagueness. |
Kuralların birkaç ünlü istisnası ve incelikli durumu vardır. Bunları bilmek seni C1 seviyesine taşır.
Hızlı ayrım: sayabildiğin çoğul isimle fewer, sayamadığın isimle less. fewer cars ama less traffic.
1) fewer vs less: Resmî kurala göre sayılabilir çoğulla fewer, sayılamazla less kullanılır: fewer cars, less traffic. Günlük konuşmada birçok kişi her yerde 'less' der ("less cars"), ama sınav ve akademik yazıda fewer beklenir. Süpermarketteki "10 items or less" tabelası bu yüzden dilbilgisi tartışması konusudur.
2) Sayılamaz görünüp bağlama göre sayılabilen isimler: Bazı isimler "tür/çeşit/porsiyon" anlamında sayılabilir olur ve many alabilir: two coffees (iki fincan kahve), many wines (birçok şarap çeşidi). Detay Sayılabilir & Sayılamayan konusunda.
3) 'a number of' özne uyumu: a number of + çoğul isim çoğul fiil alır (A number of students were absent), ama the number of tekil fiil alır (The number of students is rising). İkisini karıştırmak yaygın bir C1 tuzağıdır.
The rules have a few famous exceptions and subtle cases. Knowing them takes you to C1 level.
Quick distinction: with a plural noun you can count use fewer, with a noun you can't count use less. fewer cars but less traffic.
1) fewer vs less: By the formal rule, with countable plurals use fewer, with uncountables use less : fewer cars, less traffic. In everyday speech many people say 'less' everywhere ("less cars"), but in exams and academic writing fewer is expected. That's why the supermarket sign "10 items or less" is a matter of grammatical debate.
2) Nouns that look uncountable but become countable in context: Some nouns become countable in the sense of "type/kind/portion" and can take many : two coffees (two cups of coffee), many wines (many kinds of wine). Details are in the Countable & Uncountable topic.
3) 'a number of' subject agreement: a number of + plural noun plural takes a verb (A number of students were absent), but the number of takes a singular verb takes a verb (The number of students is rising). Mixing the two is a common C1 trap.
Resmî ve akademik yazıda register yükselir: konuşmadaki a lot of / lots of / loads of yerine many, much, a great deal of, a large number of, considerable, numerous gibi daha ölçülü ifadeler tercih edilir. Ayrıca olumlu cümlede many ve much akademik metinde tamamen doğaldır (Many studies suggest...).
- 'a large amount of data' — sayılamaz (data/amount) resmî büyük miktar.
- 'relatively few clear conclusions' — few (a'sız) = 'gerekenden az', akademik olumsuz ton.
- 'a great deal of variation' — sayılamaz büyük miktar için resmî kalıp.
- 'Much of the difference' — 'of the' ile belirli isimde much + tekil fiil.
- 'less enthusiasm' — sayılamaz karşılaştırma → less; 'fewer answers' — sayılabilir → fewer.
- 'a considerable number of / several / plenty of' — register'ı yüksek miktar ifadeleri bir arada.
In formal and academic writing the register rises: instead of the spoken a lot of / lots of / loads of , many, much, a great deal of, a large number of, considerable, numerous and similar more measured expressions are preferred. Also, in affirmative sentences many and much is completely natural in academic text (Many studies suggest...).
- 'a large amount of data' — uncountable (data/amount), a formal large quantity.
- 'relatively few clear conclusions' — few (without 'a') = 'less than needed', an academic negative tone.
- 'a great deal of variation' — a formal pattern for a large uncountable quantity.
- 'Much of the difference' — with a definite noun via 'of the', much + singular verb.
- 'less enthusiasm' — uncountable comparison → less; 'fewer answers' — countable → fewer.
- 'a considerable number of / several / plenty of' — high-register quantity expressions together.
- 'how much I actually spend' — soru kalıbı olmadan gömülü 'how much' + sayılamaz (money/spend).
- 'never much left' — olumsuz bağlamda much doğal.
- 'too many coffees' — bağlamda sayılabilir hâle gelen coffee + fazlalık vurgusu.
- 'a few / several / lots of' — küçük ve büyük miktar ifadeleri bir paragrafta.
- 'a little cash ... very little willpower' — a'lı (olumlu) ile a'sız (olumsuz) little karşıtlığı.
- 'fewer things but a lot more peace of mind' — sayılabilir fewer ↔ sayılamaz (peace) a lot more.
- 'plenty of freedom' — sayılamaz + olumlu bolluk tonu ile kapanış.
- 'how much I actually spend' — an embedded 'how much' without a question form + uncountable (money/spend).
- 'never much left' — much is natural in a negative context.
- 'too many coffees' — coffee becoming countable in context + emphasis on excess.
- 'a few / several / lots of' — small and large quantity expressions in one paragraph.
- 'a little cash ... very little willpower' — the contrast between little with 'a' (positive) and without 'a' (negative).
- 'fewer things but a lot more peace of mind' — countable fewer ↔ uncountable (peace) a lot more.
- 'plenty of freedom' — a closing with uncountable + a positive tone of abundance.

Aşağıdaki sorular kural ezberini değil, anlamı anladığını sınar. Cevaplamadan önce cümlenin tonunu düşün.
- 'I have a few friends here.' cümlesi arkadaş sayısı hakkında olumlu mu olumsuz mu bir izlenim verir?Olumlu: 'birkaç arkadaşım var, iyi'. Baştaki 'a' onu olumlu yapar.
- 'I have few friends here.' aynı kişi için nasıl bir izlenim verir?Olumsuz/yalnız: 'neredeyse hiç arkadaşım yok'. 'a'sız 'few' yetersizlik anlatır.
- 'There is little milk left.' — süt bol mu, az mı ve konuşmacı bundan memnun mu?Neredeyse bitmiş (az) ve ton olumsuz; muhtemelen sorun/eksiklik ima ediliyor.
- 'Quite a few people came.' — az mı çok mu geldi?Çok geldi; 'quite a few' deyimsel olarak 'epeyce çok' demektir.
- Neden 'much' genelde olumlu düz cümlede yerini 'a lot of'a bırakır?Olumlu cümlede 'much' kulağa resmî/kitabi geldiği için günlük dilde 'a lot of' daha doğaldır; anlam yanlış değil, register meselesidir.
The questions below do not test rote memorisation of rules but whether you understand the meaning . Before answering, think about the tone of the sentence.
- Does the sentence 'I have a few friends here.' give a positive or negative impression about the number of friends?Positive: 'I have a few friends, good'. The initial 'a' makes it positive.
- What impression does 'I have few friends here.' give for the same person?Negative/lonely: 'I have almost no friends'. 'few' without 'a' expresses insufficiency.
- 'There is little milk left.' — is there a lot or little milk, and is the speaker happy about it?Almost gone (little) and the tone is negative; it probably implies a problem/shortage.
- 'Quite a few people came.' — did few or many come? Many came; 'quite a few' idiomatically means 'quite a lot'.
- Why does 'much' usually give way to 'a lot of' in plain affirmative sentences?Because 'much' sounds formal/bookish in affirmative sentences, 'a lot of' is more natural in everyday language; the meaning isn't wrong, it's a matter of register.

Şimdi öğrendiklerini kendi cümlelerinde üret. Aşağıdaki görevi yaz; her miktar belirtecinden önce "bu isim sayılabilir mi?" ve "tonum olumlu mu?" diye sor.
- Görev: Buzdolabını (ya da çantanı) betimleyen 6-8 cümlelik kısa bir paragraf yaz. En az bir kez şu belirteçlerin HER birini kullan: much, many, a lot of, a few, a little, enough, plenty of. Rehber sorular: Ne çok var? Ne az kaldı? Neye ihtiyacın var? Neyi almalısın?Örnek cevap: My fridge tells a sad story. There isn't much milk left — only a little in the corner. I still have a few eggs, but not many, so I can make one omelette at most. There's a lot of cheese, though; my flatmate buys lots of it. We don't have enough vegetables for a proper salad, and there's very little fruit. On the bright side, there's plenty of water and a few cans of soda. I think I need to do a lot of shopping this weekend.
Now produce what you've learned in your own sentences. Write the task below; before each quantifier ask "is this noun countable?" and "is my tone positive?"
- Task: Write a short 6-8 sentence paragraph describing your fridge (or your bag). Use EACH of these quantifiers at least once: much, many, a lot of, a few, a little, enough, plenty of. Guiding questions: What is there a lot of? What is running low? What do you need? What should you buy?Sample answer: My fridge tells a sad story.
Kavram kontrol tekniği: Kural sormak yerine anlam sor. Tahtaya iki cümle yaz — I have a few friends / I have few friends — ve öğrenciye "Hangisi daha mutlu?" diye sor. Doğru cevap 'a few' olan.
Grup, içeriği much/many/a few/a little/enough/plenty of kullanarak betimlesin; en çok doğru ve doğal cümle kuran grup kazanır. Böylece hem sayılabilirlik hem ton pratiği bir arada olur.
Concept-check technique: Instead of asking for the rule, ask for the meaning. Write two sentences on the board — I have a few friends / I have few friends — and ask the student "Which one is happier?" The correct answer is the 'a few' one. This single question captures the heart of the whole topic and sticks in memory.
Common root mistake: Students map Turkish 'çok/biraz' to a single equivalent. Build a reflex against this: before each quantity word, have them point at the noun with a finger and say 'can I count it?'. The physical gesture embeds the rule in the body.
Activity suggestion: 'Fridge race' — give small groups the contents of a virtual fridge (a picture or a list). The group describes the contents using much/many/a few/a little/enough/plenty of; the group with the most correct and natural sentences wins. This way both countability and tone are practised together.
- Quantifiers ismin önünde ne kadar/kaç tane olduğunu söyler; seçim ismin sayılabilirliğine ve cümle bağlamına bağlıdır.
- many + çoğul sayılabilir, much + sayılamaz; olumlu düz cümlede ikisi de sık sık yerini a lot of / lots of'a bırakır.
- much/many olumsuz ve soruda en doğaldır; a lot of olumlu cümlenin gözdesidir.
- Baştaki küçük a her şeyi değiştirir: a few/a little = 'az ama var' (olumlu); few/little = 'yok denecek kadar az' (olumsuz).
- a few / few sayılabilirle, a little / little sayılamazla kullanılır.
- enough = yeterince (isimden önce, sıfattan sonra); plenty of = bol bol (olumlu ton).
- Resmî ölçüt: sayılabilir çoğulla fewer, sayılamazla less; quite a few = 'epeyce çok'.
- Akademik yazıda numerous, a great deal of, a large number of, considerable tercih edilir; konuşmada a lot of, lots of, loads of.
- İpucu kelimeleri (olumsuz/soru → much/many) güçlü eğilimdir ama garanti değildir; anlam ve register önce gelir.
- Komşu konular: some / any / no (olumlu/olumsuz ekseni) ve artikeller (belirlilik).
- Quantifiers, before a noun, tell how much/how many there is; the choice depends on the noun's countability and the sentence context.
- many + plural countable, much + uncountable; in plain affirmative sentences both often give their place to a lot of / lots of.
- much/many are most natural in negatives and questions; a lot of is the favourite of affirmative sentences.
- The small initial a changes everything: a few/a little = 'little but present' (positive); few/little = 'so little as to be almost none' (negative).
- a few / few with countables, a little / little are used with uncountables.
- enough = enough (before a noun, after an adjective); plenty of = plenty (positive tone).
- Formal standard: with countable plurals fewer, with uncountables use less; quite a few = 'quite a lot'.
- In academic writing numerous, a great deal of, a large number of, considerable are preferred; in speech a lot of, lots of, loads of.
- Clue words (negative/question → much/many) are a strong tendency, but not a guarantee; meaning and register come first.
- Neighbouring topics: some / any / no (the affirmative/negative axis) and articles (definiteness).
