Çünkü bir ismin sayılabilir mi sayılamaz mı olduğu, sonraki üç kararınızı belirler: (1) önüne a/an koyabilir misiniz, (2) çoğul yapıp -s ekleyebilir misiniz, (3) many/much, few/little gibi belirleyicilerden hangisini seçeceksiniz. Yani bu konu, artikeller ve belirleyiciler konularının temelini oluşturur.
Türkçedeki benzeri: Türkçede de aslında bir sezgi vardır. "Üç su" demek yerine "üç bardak su" deriz; "iki ekmek" yerine çoğu zaman "iki somun ekmek" deriz. İşte İngilizcedeki a glass of water, a loaf of bread mantığı buna çok benzer. Fark şu: İngilizce bu ayrımı çok daha katı ve tutarlı uygular.
English divides every noun into two: the things we can count and the things we cannot. Things you can count one by one — one pen, two pens, three pens — are countable nouns. But you cannot count water, air, money, or information one by one; these are uncountable nouns. The distinction looks innocent, but it quietly governs a huge part of English grammar.
Why does it matter? Because whether a noun is countable or uncountable determines your next three decisions: (1) can you put a/an in front of it, (2) can you add a plural -s, and (3) which quantifier — many/much, few/little — you should choose. In other words, this topic forms the basis of articles and quantifiers.
The parallel in Turkish: Turkish actually has a similar intuition. Instead of saying "three waters" we say "three glasses of water"; instead of "two breads" we usually say "two loaves of bread". The logic of English a glass of water and a loaf of bread is very similar. The difference is that English applies the distinction far more strictly and consistently.
- Sayılabilir (countable): tek tek sayılır, çoğul yapılabilir. book → books, child → children.
- Sayılamayan (uncountable): tek tek sayılmaz, çoğul yapılmaz. water, rice, money, information.
- a/an yalnızca sayılabilir tekil isimle kullanılır: a car (✔), a water (normalde ✗).
- Sayılamayan isim tekildir; fiil de tekil gelir: The news is good. (haber iyi).
- many + sayılabilir çoğul; much + sayılamayan: many books / much time.
- a few + sayılabilir; a little + sayılamayan: a few eggs / a little sugar.
- Miktar sormak: How many (sayılabilir) / How much (sayılamayan).
- Sayılamayanı saymak için birim kullan: a piece of, a glass of, a bit of, a slice of.
- Bazı kelimeler İngilizcede sayılamaz ama Türkçede sayılabilir: advice, information, furniture, news, luggage, homework, bread.
- Bir isim bağlama göre iki türlü de olabilir: coffee (madde) vs. two coffees (iki fincan).
- Countable: counted one by one, can be made plural. book → books, child → children.
- Uncountable: not counted one by one, cannot be made plural. water, rice, money, information.
- a/an is used only with a singular countable noun: a car (✔), a water (normally ✗).
- An uncountable noun is singular; the verb is singular too: The news is good.
- many + countable plural; much + uncountable: many books / much time.
- a few + countable; a little + uncountable: a few eggs / a little sugar.
- Asking about quantity: How many (countable) / How much (uncountable).
- To count an uncountable, use a unit: a piece of, a glass of, a bit of, a slice of.
- Some words are uncountable in English but countable in Turkish: advice, information, furniture, news, luggage, homework, bread.
- A noun can be either type depending on context: coffee (substance) vs. two coffees (two cups).
- Bu ismi tek tek sayabiliyor musun? Evet ise sayılabilir (book → books).
- Önüne a/an koyabiliyor musun? Yalnızca sayılabilir tekil alır (a chair ✔, a water ✗).
- Çoğul (-s) yapılıyor mu? Sayılamayan isim asla çoğullaşmaz (rice, money, information).
İki isim türü, cümlede farklı davranır. Aşağıda temel kalıpları olumlu, olumsuz ve soru biçimleriyle görüyoruz. Anahtar sezgi: sayılabilir tekil isim asla yalnız duramaz — önünde a/an, the, my gibi bir belirleyici ister; sayılamayan isim ise yalnız durabilir.
Olumlu (Affirmative)
Formül (sayılabilir): a/an + tekil veya sayı/some + çoğul. Formül (sayılamayan): some / belirleyicisiz + tekil biçim.
Olumsuz (Negative)
Olumsuzda çoğu zaman any (sayılabilir çoğul veya sayılamayan) veya much/many kullanılır.
Soru (Question)
Miktar sorusunda ayrım en nettir: How many + sayılabilir çoğul, How much + sayılamayan.
| Durum | Sayılabilir | Sayılamayan |
|---|---|---|
| Örnek isim | book, apple, car | water, rice, money |
| a/an alır mı? | Evet (a book) | Hayır |
| Çoğul olur mu? | Evet (books) | Hayır |
| Miktar sorusu | How many? | How much? |
| Çok | many | much |
| Az (olumlu) | a few | a little |
- Can you count this noun one by one? If yes, it is countable (book → books).
- Can you put a/an in front of it? Only a singular countable takes it (a chair ✔, a water ✗).
- Can it be made plural (-s)? An uncountable noun is never pluralised (rice, money, information).
The two noun types behave differently in a sentence. Below we see the basic patterns in affirmative, negative, and question forms. The key intuition: a singular countable noun can never stand alone — it needs a determiner such as a/an, the, or my in front of it; an uncountable noun, however, can stand alone.
Affirmative
Formula (countable): a/an + singular or a number/some + plural. Formula (uncountable): some / no determiner + singular form.
Negative
In the negative we usually use any (with countable plurals or uncountables) or much/many.
Question
The distinction is clearest in a quantity question: How many + countable plural, How much + uncountable.
| Situation | Countable | Uncountable |
|---|---|---|
| Example noun | book, apple, car | water, rice, money |
| Takes a/an? | Yes (a book) | No |
| Has a plural? | Yes (books) | No |
| Quantity question | How many? | How much? |
| A lot | many | much |
| A little (positive) | a few | a little |
Somut nesneler
Tek tek sayılır; a/an, sayılar ve çoğul rahatça gelir: two brothers, five apples.
Maddeler & sıvılar
Bütün/kütle olarak düşünülür, sayılamaz: water, sugar, rice, milk — a/an yok.
Soyut & toplu (tuzak)
Türkçede sayılır ama İngilizcede sayılamaz: advice, information, furniture, news.
1) Somut nesneleri saymak (en yaygın)
Elle tutulan, gözle görülen ve tek tek ayrılabilen her şey sayılabilirdir. Bunlarda a/an, sayılar ve çoğul rahatça kullanılır.
Concrete objects
Counted one by one; a/an, numbers and plurals come easily: two brothers, five apples.
Substances & liquids
Thought of as a whole or mass, uncountable: water, sugar, rice, milk — no a/an.
Abstract & collective (the trap)
Countable in Turkish but uncountable in English: advice, information, furniture, news.
1) Counting concrete objects (the most common)
Anything you can touch, see, and separate one by one is countable. With these, a/an, numbers, and plurals are used freely.
2) Describing substances and liquids
Substances we think of as a single mass — water, milk, sugar, sand — are uncountable. Because we cannot draw a boundary around them, we cannot count them.
3) Describing abstract concepts
Abstract concepts such as information, love, time, and happiness are usually uncountable. They are thought of as a whole and are not divided into pieces.
4) Ordering food and drinks
In restaurants and cafés we use uncountable drinks as if they were countable, meaning a serving of that drink. This is very common and natural.
Bir cümlede hangi belirleyicinin geçtiği, ismin sayılabilir mi sayılamaz mı olduğunu ele verir. Aşağıdaki tablo, gördüğünüzde ismin türünü tahmin etmenizi sağlayan ipucu kelimelerdir.
| Belirleyici | Sayılabilir | Sayılamayan | Örnek |
|---|---|---|---|
| many | ✔ | ✗ | many friends |
| much | ✗ | ✔ | much water |
| a few | ✔ | ✗ | a few coins |
| a little | ✗ | ✔ | a little bread |
| several | ✔ | ✗ | several books |
| a number of | ✔ | ✗ | a number of cars |
| an amount of | ✗ | ✔ | an amount of money |
| some / any | ✔ | ✔ | some apples / some rice |
| a lot of / lots of | ✔ | ✔ | a lot of people / a lot of time |
| How many / How much | How many | How much | How many? / How much? |
Which determiner appears in a sentence gives away whether the noun is countable or uncountable. The table below lists the clue words that let you predict the noun's type when you see them.
| Determiner | Countable | Uncountable | Example |
How much? |
Aynı kelime bağlama göre tür değiştirir. Madde olarak sayılamaz, porsiyon/tür olarak sayılabilir: I love coffee (madde) ↔ Can I have a coffee? (bir fincan).
Bazı isimler bağlama göre hem sayılabilir hem sayılamayan olabilir ve anlam bu seçime göre değişir. Bu, İngilizcenin en zarif inceliklerinden biridir: aynı kelime, madde olarak düşünüldüğünde sayılamaz, tek bir örnek/porsiyon/tür olarak düşünüldüğünde sayılabilir olur.
Madde vs. porsiyon/tür
Soyut genel vs. somut örnek
Nezaket ve doğallık: Kafede a coffee, two teas demek son derece doğaldır ve kimse yadırgamaz. Buradaki 'kural ihlali' aslında yerleşik bir kısaltmadır: a (cup of) coffee. Öğrenciye bunu net söylemek gerekir, yoksa 'her sayılamayan asla sayılamaz' diye ezberler ve doğal konuşmadan uzaklaşır.
The same word changes type depending on context. As a substance it is uncountable, as a serving/type it is countable: I love coffee (substance) ↔ Can I have a coffee? (a cup).
Some nouns can be both countable and uncountable depending on context, and the meaning changes with that choice. This is one of the most elegant subtleties of English: the same word is uncountable when thought of as a substance, and countable when thought of as a single instance, serving, or type.
Substance vs. serving/type
Abstract general vs. concrete instance
Politeness and naturalness: In a café, saying a coffee or two teas is perfectly natural and nobody finds it strange. The 'rule-breaking' here is really an established shorthand: a (cup of) coffee. Learners need to be told this clearly, otherwise they memorise 'every uncountable is always uncountable' and drift away from natural speech.
- Türkçe: "haberler" → İngilizce: news (sayılamaz ve TEKİL fiil alır: The news is...).
- Türkçe: "bagajlar, valizler" → İngilizce: luggage / baggage (sayılamaz).
- Türkçe: "ödevler" → İngilizce: homework (sayılamaz).
Turkish
Freely pluralised: bir bilgi, bilgiler / bir tavsiye, tavsiyeler / mobilyalar.
English
These are uncountable, with no plural: information, advice, furniture — they never take -s.
The biggest clash between Turkish and English is that the intuition about countability differs. Many words that we freely pluralise and count in Turkish are thought of as a whole or mass in English and are uncountable. A learner who thinks in Turkish and translates directly keeps stumbling here.
- Turkish: "bir bilgi, bilgiler" → English: information (uncountable, no plural).
- Turkish: "bir tavsiye, tavsiyeler" → English: advice (uncountable).
- Turkish: "mobilyalar" → English: furniture (uncountable).
- Turkish: "haberler" → English: news (uncountable and takes a SINGULAR verb: The news is...).
- Turkish: "bagajlar, valizler" → English: luggage / baggage (uncountable).
- Turkish: "ödevler" → English: homework (uncountable).
a/an yalnızca sayılabilir tekil ile gelir. Miktar sorusu türü ele verir: How many? (sayılabilir) / How much? (sayılamaz).
Bu konu üç komşu konuyla iç içedir. Onları ayırt etmek, doğru belirleyiciyi seçmenizi kolaylaştırır.
| Konu | Ne yapar? | Bu konuyla ilişkisi |
|---|---|---|
| Artikeller (a/an/the) | İsmin belirli/belirsiz olduğunu gösterir | a/an SADECE sayılabilir tekille gelir; sayılabilirlik artikel seçimini belirler |
| Belirleyiciler (many/much...) | Miktar bildirir | Belirleyicinin hangi biçimini seçeceğiniz tamamen sayılabilirliğe bağlıdır |
| Some / Any | Belirsiz miktar bildirir | some/any hem sayılabilir hem sayılamazla çalışır; fiil ve çoğul uyumu isim türüne bağlıdır |
a/an occurs only with a singular countable. The quantity question gives away the type: How many? (countable) / How much? (uncountable).
This topic is intertwined with three neighbouring topics. Telling them apart makes it easier to choose the right determiner.
| Topic | What does it do? | Relation to this topic |
|---|---|---|
| Articles (a/an/the) | Shows whether the noun is definite or indefinite | a/an occurs ONLY with a singular countable; countability determines article choice |
| Quantifiers (many/much...) | Expresses quantity | Which form of the determiner you choose depends entirely on countability |
| Some / Any | Expresses an indefinite quantity | some/any work with both countables and uncountables; verb and plural agreement depend on the noun's type |
Türkçede sayılan soyut kelimeleri çoğul/an ile kullanma. an advice, informations, two furnitures ✗ → some advice / a piece of advice ✓.
Don't use abstract words that are counted in Turkish with a plural or an. an advice, informations, two furnitures ✗ → some advice / a piece of advice ✓.
Sayılabilirlik mantıklı görünse de birkaç grup istisna vardır. Bunları ezberlemek yerine gruplayarak öğrenmek daha kalıcıdır.
1) -s ile biten ama tekil sayılan sayılamayanlar
2) Her zaman çoğul olan isimler (a/an almaz)
3) Türkçede sayılabilen ünlü sayılamayanlar (ezber listesi)
- advice, information, news, knowledge (soyut bilgi)
- furniture, luggage, baggage, equipment (toplu eşya)
- bread, cheese, meat, rice, pasta (yiyecek maddeleri)
- money, cash (para)
- homework, housework, work (iş/uğraş)
- traffic, weather, music, progress, research, accommodation
Although countability seems logical, there are a few groups of exceptions. Rather than memorising them, learning them in groups sticks better.
1) Uncountables that end in -s but count as singular
2) Nouns that are always plural (no a/an)
3) Famous uncountables that are countable in Turkish (memory list)
- advice, information, news, knowledge (abstract knowledge)
- furniture, luggage, baggage, equipment (collective items)
- bread, cheese, meat, rice, pasta (food substances)
- money, cash (money)
- homework, housework, work (work/effort)
- traffic, weather, music, progress, research, accommodation
Akademik yazıda sayılamayan soyut isimler (research, evidence, data, analysis, knowledge) çok sık geçer ve sayılabilirlik hataları burada ciddi görünür. Özellikle research ve evidence sayılamaz olduğu için 'researches' ve 'evidences' yazmak tipik bir öğrenci hatasıdır.
- research, evidence, information, knowledge → hepsi sayılamaz, -s almaz.
- much / a great deal of + sayılamaz akademik isim (many değil).
- Miktar birimi kalıpları: a piece of evidence, an item of information, a body of research.
- progress, feedback → çoğul yapılmaz.
- 'researches / evidences / feedbacks' tipik non-native hatalardır.
- 'data' resmî yazıda çoğul (datum'un çoğulu), günlük dilde tekil de kabul görür.
In academic writing, uncountable abstract nouns (research, evidence, data, analysis, knowledge) appear very often, and countability errors look serious here. Because research and evidence in particular are uncountable, writing 'researches' and 'evidences' is a typical student mistake.
- research, evidence, information, knowledge → all uncountable, take no -s.
- much / a great deal of + an uncountable academic noun (not many).
- Unit-of-measure patterns: a piece of evidence, an item of information, a body of research.
- progress, feedback → not pluralised.
- 'researches / evidences / feedbacks' are typical non-native mistakes.
- 'data' is plural in formal writing (the plural of datum); in everyday language the singular is also accepted.
- some bread / a little cheese / a lot of rice → sayılamayanlarla some, a little, a lot of.
- a few vegetables / two bottles of water → sayılabilir çoğul (a few, sayı + birim).
- very little money / much meat → money ve meat sayılamaz (little, much).
- many other ingredients → ingredients sayılabilir çoğul (many).
- some useful advice / much information → advice ve information sayılamaz, -s almaz.
- so much traffic → traffic sayılamaz (much).
- how many bags / a few pots → sayılabilir çoğul (many, a few).
- the best experiences → burada 'experience' sayılabilir (belirli olaylar); 'a little time' ise sayılamaz.
- some bread / a little cheese / a lot of rice → some, a little, a lot of with uncountables.
- a few vegetables / two bottles of water → countable plural (a few, number + unit).
- very little money / much meat → money and meat are uncountable (little, much).
- many other ingredients → ingredients is a countable plural (many).
- some useful advice / much information → advice and information are uncountable, take no -s.
- so much traffic → traffic is uncountable (much).
- how many bags / a few pots → countable plural (many, a few).
- the best experiences → here 'experience' is countable (specific events); 'a little time', however, is uncountable.

Aşağıdaki sorular kuralı değil, anlamı test eder. Cevaplamadan önce ismin madde mi yoksa ayrı ayrı sayılabilen bir şey mi olduğunu düşünün.
- 'Two coffees, please' cümlesi neden doğrudur, oysa coffee sayılamaz?Çünkü burada coffee 'iki fincan kahve' anlamında porsiyonu gösterir; porsiyonlar sayılabilir.
- 'She has a long hair' neden yanlıştır?hair (saç, bütün olarak) sayılamaz; a/an almaz. 'a hair' sadece tek bir tel saç demektir. Doğrusu: 'She has long hair.'
- 'The news is good' — neden 'is', 'are' değil?news -s ile bitse de sayılamaz ve tekil kabul edilir; bu yüzden tekil fiil (is) alır.
- 'a paper' ile 'paper' arasında ne fark var?'paper' = kâğıt (madde, sayılamaz); 'a paper' = gazete veya makale (sayılabilir). Anlam sayılabilirliği değiştirir.
- Neden 'How many advice?' diyemeyiz?advice sayılamaz; How many yalnızca sayılabilir çoğulla gelir. Doğrusu: 'How much advice?'
The questions below test meaning, not the rule. Before answering, think about whether the noun is a substance or something that can be counted separately.
- Why is the sentence 'Two coffees, please' correct even though coffee is uncountable?Because here coffee refers to a serving, in the sense of 'two cups of coffee'; servings are countable.
- Why is 'She has a long hair' wrong?hair (hair as a whole) is uncountable; it takes no a/an. 'a hair' means only a single strand of hair. The correct form is: 'She has long hair.'
- 'The news is good' — why 'is' and not 'are'?although news ends in -s, it is uncountable and treated as singular; so it takes a singular verb (is).
- What is the difference between 'a paper' and 'paper'?'paper' = the material (a substance, uncountable); 'a paper' = a newspaper or article (countable). Meaning changes countability.
- Why can't we say 'How many advice?'advice is uncountable; How many occurs only with a countable plural. The correct form is: 'How much advice?'
- How ____ students are in your class?many (students sayılabilir çoğul)
- There isn't ____ water in the bottle.much (water sayılamaz)

En az bir kez a little, bir kez a few, bir kez a lot of, ve bir kez miktar birimi (a piece of / a glass of) kullanın.
Task: Write a short paragraph of 6-8 sentences describing a weekend shopping trip or a recipe. Your aim is to use countable and uncountable nouns together with the correct determiners.
Guiding questions: What did you buy/cook? Which substances (uncountable: flour, sugar, oil) and which individual objects (countable: eggs, apples, tomatoes) were there? How many / how much? Use a little at least once, a few once, a lot of once, and a unit of measure (a piece of / a glass of) once.
Kavram kontrolü için hızlı test: Öğrenciye bir isim verin ve 'iki ___ diyebilir misin?' diye sorun. 'two books' doğal geliyorsa sayılabilir; 'two waters/two advices' garip geliyorsa (kafede porsiyon hariç) sayılamaz. Bu kulak testi, kural ezberinden daha kalıcıdır.
Etkinlik önerisi: Bir alışveriş listesi / market rol-oyunu yapın. Öğrenciler 'How much...? / How many...?' sorularıyla birbirinden ürün istesin. Bir başka etkinlik: kelimeleri iki sütuna (C / U) ayıran hızlı sınıflandırma yarışması; tartışmalı kelimeler (coffee, paper, hair) üzerine konuşun.
Quick test for a concept check: Give the learner a noun and ask 'can you say two ___?'. If 'two books' sounds natural, it is countable; if 'two waters/two advices' sounds odd (except a serving in a café), it is uncountable. This ear test sticks better than memorising rules.
Activity idea: Do a shopping list / grocery role-play. Have learners ask each other for items with 'How much...? / How many...?' questions. Another activity: a quick classification race sorting words into two columns (C / U); discuss the debatable words (coffee, paper, hair).
- İsimler ikiye ayrılır: sayılabilir (tek tek sayılır, çoğul olur) ve sayılamayan (bütün/madde, çoğul olmaz).
- a/an ve çoğul (-s) yalnızca sayılabilir isimlerle olur; sayılamayan isim a/an almaz, çoğullaşmaz.
- Belirleyici seçimi türe bağlıdır: many/a few (sayılabilir), much/a little (sayılamayan).
- Miktar sorusu: How many? (sayılabilir) / How much? (sayılamayan).
- some, any, a lot of, no, the her iki türle de kullanılır — bunlar türü ele vermez.
- Sayılamayanı saymak için birim: a piece of, a glass of, a slice of, a bit of.
- Türkçede sayılabilen ama İngilizcede sayılamayan tuzaklar: advice, information, furniture, news, luggage, homework, bread, money, work, weather, traffic.
- Bir isim bağlama göre iki türlü olabilir: coffee (madde) vs. a coffee (porsiyon); experience (genel) vs. an experience (olay).
- Sonraki adım: artikeller ve belirleyiciler bu ayrımın üzerine kurulur; some / any / no ile pekiştirin.
- Nouns split into two: countable (counted one by one, has a plural) and uncountable (a whole/substance, no plural).
- a/an and the plural (-s) occur only with countable nouns; an uncountable noun takes no a/an and is not pluralised.
- Determiner choice depends on the type: many/a few (countable), much/a little (uncountable).
- Quantity question: How many? (countable) / How much? (uncountable).
- some, any, a lot of, no, the are used with both types — they don't give away the type.
- To count an uncountable, use a unit: a piece of, a glass of, a slice of, a bit of.
- Traps that are countable in Turkish but uncountable in English: advice, information, furniture, news, luggage, homework, bread, money, work, weather, traffic.
- A noun can be either type depending on context: coffee (substance) vs. a coffee (serving); experience (general) vs. an experience (event).
- Next step: articles and quantifiers are built on this distinction; reinforce it with some / any / no.
