Read the rules, then start the exam.

Ask almost any teenager how they revise for an exam, and the answer is likely to involve several things happening at once: a textbook open on the desk, a playlist in the background, and a phone glowing quietly beside the keyboard. Doing everything at the same time feels efficient, even impressive. Yet a growing body of research suggests that what we proudly call multitasking is, for the most part, an illusion.
The brain, it turns out, cannot truly attend to two demanding tasks simultaneously. What actually happens is 'task-switching': attention darts back and forth between activities, and each switch carries a small hidden cost. A message is checked, a reply is typed, and by the time the eyes return to the page, the thread of the argument has been lost and must be picked up again from the beginning.
These costs are easy to overlook precisely because each one is tiny. A few seconds here, a moment of confusion there — none of it seems to matter. Over the course of an evening, however, the losses accumulate, and a task that should have taken an hour stretches comfortably into two. Worse still, work produced in this fragmented state tends to be shallower, riddled with small errors that a more focused mind would have caught.
It would be unfair, though, to blame young people alone for this habit. The devices themselves are engineered to interrupt: every buzz and banner is designed to pull attention away from whatever came before. Resisting such a steady stream of invitations requires a kind of discipline that even adults struggle to muster, and it is hardly surprising that students, surrounded by the same technology, find it no easier.
The good news is that concentration, like a muscle, can be trained. Those who set aside their phones, work in short focused bursts and take deliberate breaks report not only better results but, curiously, less exhaustion at the end. The problem was never the amount of work, it seems, but the constant switching — and that, at least, is something within our control.

Elif had promised herself she would not cry, and for most of the afternoon she managed it. It was the final match of her last season, and although the score no longer mattered — her team had already lost the league weeks before — the changing room that morning had felt unusually quiet, as though everyone understood that something was ending.
For six years the old sports hall had been the fixed point of her week. She knew every squeak of its floor, every draught from its high windows, the particular smell of dust and polish that greeted her at the door. Other things in her life had come and gone, but this place, and the friends she had made in it, had stayed reliably the same.
The match itself passed in a blur. She remembered, oddly, not the goals but the small things: the captain's shout across the court, the coach folding his arms in the way he always did, the sunlight falling in long stripes through the windows. Memory, she would later think, keeps not what we expect but what it chooses.
When the final whistle blew, nobody rushed to leave. The players lingered, half-dressed, telling the same old jokes they had told a hundred times, reluctant to admit that there would be no next week. Elif looked around the hall one last time and found, to her surprise, that she felt no sadness — only a quiet gratitude that it had all happened at all.
On the bus home that evening, her kit bag heavy on her lap, she realised that the team had not really ended. Its matches were over, certainly, but everything it had taught her — how to lose well, how to trust others, how to keep going when tired — she would carry with her, quietly, for a long time to come.

Your school council has proposed turning the main courtyard into a phone-free zone during breaks, where students may only talk, read or play games. The school magazine has asked students for their views. Write a formal email to the magazine giving your opinion. Some people believe that online lessons will one day replace ordinary schools completely. Others strongly disagree. Discuss the arguments for and against this view, and then give your own opinion.
