Reading (2 metin · 20 soru)

Suggested time: 25 minutes. (Önerilen süre: 25 dakika.) Text 1 yankı odalarını, Text 2 multitasking'in gizli bedelini tartışır. (Text 1 explores echo chambers; Text 2 argues about the hidden cost of multitasking.)

Text 1 · The Comfort of the Echo Chamber

There is a comforting myth, popular among people of every age, that we form our opinions by weighing the evidence fairly. In truth, most of us do something rather different: we seek out the voices that already agree with us. Social media, far from broadening our horizons, quietly hands us more of what we already believe, and we mistake this steady flattery for a picture of the world.

Yet to conclude that we are simply prisoners of our feeds would be to let ourselves off far too lightly. The algorithm may suggest, but it does not force. What it offers is a temptation — the pleasant sensation of being right — and it is we who accept it, click after click. The uncomfortable truth is that an echo chamber is not built around us; it is built by us.

This, perhaps, is why genuine disagreement has become so rare and so valuable. The person who deliberately reads what annoys them, who follows those they suspect are wrong, is doing something quietly heroic. Understanding, in this strange new world, is frequently achieved through discomfort.

A · True / False (Questions 1-5 — Text 1)

Are these sentences true or false? (Bu cümleler doğru mu, yanlış mı?) Dikkat: bazı cümleler mantıklı görünür ama metinde söylenmez.

B · Multiple Choice (Questions 6-10 — Text 1)

Choose the correct answer. (Doğru cevabı seç.)

Text 2 · The Myth of Multitasking

Few habits are as quietly celebrated among students as multitasking. We revise with a video playing, reply to messages mid-essay, and congratulate ourselves on getting so much done at once. Were we to examine what actually happens in the brain, however, the picture would be far less flattering.

Consider the simple act of studying. What feels like doing two things simultaneously is, in reality, the brain switching rapidly between them, paying a small toll each time. Each switch, researchers suggest, costs a fraction of a second and a little accuracy — and those fractions, over an evening, quietly add up. What is lost is not merely time but the depth of attention that real learning demands.

None of this is an argument for studying in total silence, which suits few people. It is, rather, a plea for honesty. Multitasking is not free; it is simply a cost we pay in a currency we rarely count — our own concentration. Had we understood the price sooner, we might have closed the extra tabs.

C · Gap Fill (Questions 11-15 — Text 2, one word)

Complete the sentences with one word from the text. (Cümleleri metinden bir kelimeyle tamamla.)

Writing (2 görev)

Suggested time: 35 minutes — Task 1: 13 min, Task 2: 22 min. (Önerilen süre: 35 dakika — Görev 1: 13 dk, Görev 2: 22 dk.) Öğretmenin değerlendirecek; örnek cevap yoktur.

Task 1 · Formal Email: An Online Course That Was Not as Described (130-170 words)

You recently paid for an online exam-preparation course, but it did not match the description you were given when you signed up. Write a formal email to the course provider. Explain what was promised and what actually happened, describe how this has affected your studies, and state clearly what action you expect them to take.

  • Use a formal opening and closing: "Dear Sir / Madam," ... "Yours faithfully," / "Yours sincerely,". (resmi açılış ve kapanış — genre conventions)
  • Use at least one passive / impersonal structure: "I was assured that...", "It was stated that the course would...". (edilgen / kişiliksiz yapı)
  • Use one cleft sentence for emphasis: "What I find unacceptable is...", "It was only after paying that I discovered...". (vurgu için cleft)
  • Maintain a consistently formal register and make a firm but polite request: "I would therefore be grateful if you could...". (tutarlı resmi üslup + kibar rica)
  • 130-170 words, formal register throughout. (130-170 kelime)
E-POSTA YAPISI
  • Açılış: "Dear Sir / Madam," + yazma sebebin (I am writing to complain about / regarding...).
  • Gövde: vaat edilen (passive + reported speech) → gerçekte olan → etkisi → beklediğin işlem (would/could + refund/repeat).
  • Kapanış: "I look forward to your prompt response." + "Yours faithfully," + adın.

Task 2 · Argument Essay: Should Schools Ban Smartphones? (200-260 words)

Some people argue that schools should ban smartphones completely during the day, while others believe students should be allowed to use them as tools for learning. Discuss both views and give your own opinion, supporting it with clear reasons and examples. (Bazıları okulların gün boyunca akıllı telefonları tamamen yasaklaması gerektiğini savunurken, bazıları öğrencilerin bunları öğrenme aracı olarak kullanabilmesi gerektiğine inanıyor. Her iki görüşü tartış ve kendi görüşünü net gerekçeler ve örneklerle destekle.)

  • Discuss both views before giving your own opinion. (kendi görüşünden önce iki görüşü de tartış)
  • Use at least three discourse markers for contrast and concession: whereas, nevertheless, that said, admittedly, conversely. (en az üç söylem belirleyicisi)
  • Use hedging and stance devices to qualify your claims: "it could be argued that...", "arguably", "to some extent". (savı yumuşatma / tutum)
  • Use at least one cleft or inversion for emphasis and one nominalisation (it is argued that..., "the widespread assumption that..."). (vurgu için cleft/devrik + isimleştirme)
  • 200-260 words, organised into clear paragraphs. (200-260 kelime)
