Read the rules, then start the exam. (Kuralları oku, sonra sınavı başlat.)
Bu ara sınav, Ünite 1-10'da öğrendiğin her şeyi C1 seviyesinde ölçer: advanced tense & aspect; ileri modal anlamları; modal perfect yapıları; inversion (devrik yapı); conditional inversion (devrik koşul); advanced conditionals (but for / provided that / mixed); cleft ve vurgu yapıları (What... / It was... that...); advanced participle clauses; nominalisation (isimleştirme); ve advanced passive & reporting (is said to / is believed to have). Speaking hariç dört beceri test edilir. Toplam süre 100 dakikadır ve tek bir sayaçla ilerler — süreyi bölümler arasında kendin yönetirsin.

Ask almost any teenager how they get their homework done, and the answer is likely to involve doing several things at once: an essay in one window, a group chat in another, and music playing throughout. Multitasking, it is often assumed, is simply what young people are naturally good at. Yet a growing body of research suggests that the brain is far less capable of genuine multitasking than we like to believe.
What feels like doing two things simultaneously is, in most cases, rapid switching between them. Each time attention shifts — from an equation to a notification and back again — the brain pays a small price, sometimes called a "switch cost". Individually these costs are tiny; added up over an evening, they can lengthen a task considerably and increase the number of careless mistakes.
In one study, students who worked with their phones within reach performed noticeably worse on tests of comprehension than those who left their phones in another room. Strikingly, the mere presence of the device was enough to affect them, even when it never buzzed. The temptation to check, it seems, occupies part of the mind whether or not the phone is actually used.
This is not to say that every form of divided attention is harmful. Listening to familiar, wordless music while doing routine work appears to do little damage, and some people genuinely find it calming. The problems arise when two demanding tasks compete for the same mental resources — writing and messaging, for instance, both draw heavily on language.
The practical lesson is not that teenagers are uniquely distracted, but that no brain multitasks as well as it thinks it does. Those who protect even short periods of single-minded focus tend to finish sooner and remember more. Ironically, the quickest way through a pile of homework may be to do just one thing at a time.

Boredom has a bad reputation. For most teenagers it is something to be escaped at all costs, and with a phone in every pocket, escape has never been easier. The moment a lesson drags or a bus is late, a screen offers instant relief. Yet some psychologists now argue that in banishing boredom so completely, we may be losing something valuable.
Boredom, they suggest, is not simply an absence of things to do; it is a signal. It nudges us to seek out something more meaningful, and in doing so it can spark curiosity and imagination. Children left with nothing in particular to do often invent elaborate games; the same restlessness, in older minds, can lead to unexpected ideas.
There is also evidence that constant stimulation comes at a cost. A mind that is never allowed to wander rarely has the chance to make the loose, surprising connections from which creativity grows. Some of the most original thinkers have described their best ideas arriving not at their desks but while walking, washing up, or simply staring out of a window.
None of this means that boredom is always pleasant or productive. Prolonged, inescapable boredom — of the kind felt in a dull job or a tedious wait — can be genuinely miserable, and there is nothing romantic about it. The point is more modest: that small, ordinary moments of boredom need not be filled instantly, and that resisting the urge to reach for a screen can occasionally be rewarding.
Perhaps, then, the goal is not to abolish boredom but to make peace with it. Allowing the mind a few empty minutes, rather than flooding every gap with entertainment, may be less a waste of time than a quiet investment in it.
Complete the sentences with ONE word from the text. (Cümleleri metinden BİR kelimeyle tamamla.)
Choose the correct answer. (Doğru cevabı seç.)
Suggested time: 35 minutes — Task 1: 13 min, Task 2: 22 min. (Önerilen süre: 35 dakika — Görev 1: 13 dk, Görev 2: 22 dk.) Öğretmenin değerlendirecek; örnek cevap yoktur.
Your school is thinking of banning mobile phones throughout the entire school day, including break times. The school magazine has asked students for their opinions. Write an email to the magazine giving your view. (Okulun, teneffüsler de dâhil tüm okul günü boyunca cep telefonlarını yasaklamayı düşünüyor. Okul dergisi öğrencilerin görüşünü soruyor. Görüşünü belirten bir e-posta yaz.)
Some people believe that online lessons will one day replace ordinary schools completely. Others strongly disagree. Discuss the arguments for and against this view, and then give your own opinion.
