A few years ago, the idea of taking every student's phone away at the school gate would have sounded impossible to most teenagers. Today, however, a growing number of schools around the world are doing exactly that. From small village schools to huge city academies, teachers have started to lock phones away during the day, and the results have surprised almost everyone.
In one large secondary school in England, around a thousand students had to place their phones in a locked pouch every morning and could not open them until the final bell. The teachers had expected loud complaints and constant arguments. Instead, within a few weeks most students admitted that they actually felt calmer. Break times became noisier, because pupils were talking to each other again instead of staring at their screens.
Supporters of the ban argue that phones are simply too tempting. If a message arrives in the middle of a lesson, they say, even the most hard-working student will be distracted. Some teachers have also noticed a surprising side effect: because pupils can no longer film each other, there has been far less online bullying, and students seem more willing to make mistakes in class.
Not everyone is convinced, though. Critics point out that phones can be useful learning tools, and that in an emergency a parent might need to reach their child immediately. There is also a worry that banning phones at school does nothing to teach young people how to use technology sensibly once they get home, where nobody is watching.
Even the supporters admit that a phone ban is not a magic solution to every problem in a school. Yet the experiment has clearly changed the conversation. As one head teacher put it, 'For years we assumed phones were just part of school life. Now, at last, we are asking whether they should be.' Whatever happens next, this debate seems unlikely to disappear any time soon.

When Deniz was eleven, he joined the school basketball team almost by accident. A friend had begged him to come to a training session, and although he could barely dribble the ball, the coach told him to stay. For the first few months he sat on the bench during every match, watching the older, taller players score point after point.
By the time he was thirteen, Deniz had started to lose hope. He trained twice a week, yet he was still one of the weakest players on the team. His parents had bought him expensive new trainers, but the shoes had not made him any faster. More than once, he decided that he would quit at the end of the season.
Everything changed the evening before an important game, when the coach asked to speak to him alone. She told him that she had been watching his passing, and that it had quietly become the best on the team. 'You don't have to be the tallest,' she said. 'You just have to see what nobody else can see.' That night, for the first time, Deniz felt that he truly belonged.
Instead of quitting, Deniz made a decision. He started staying behind after training to practise, and he studied videos of professional players on his tablet. It was harder than he had expected, but this time he was determined. If he had given up that season, he says now, he would never have discovered what a good teammate he could be.
Three years have passed, and Deniz is now the captain of the team. He has even started coaching a group of younger children at the weekend. 'Talent is not the whole story,' he tells them. 'Hard work is a door. If you close it too early, you never find out what is on the other side. My advice is simple: keep the door open.'
Complete the sentences with ONE word from the text. (Cümleleri metinden BİR kelimeyle tamamla.)

Suggested time: 35 minutes — Task 1: 13 min, Task 2: 22 min. (Önerilen süre: 35 dakika — Görev 1: 13 dk, Görev 2: 22 dk.) Öğretmenin değerlendirecek; örnek cevap yoktur.
Your school is thinking about banning mobile phones during the whole school day. The school website has asked students to share their views. Write an email to your head teacher giving your opinion. (Okulun tüm gün boyunca cep telefonlarını yasaklamayı düşünüyor. Okul sitesi öğrencilerin görüşünü soruyor. Müdürüne görüşünü belirten bir e-posta yaz.)
Some people believe that in the future students will study entirely online and school buildings will disappear completely. Others strongly disagree. Discuss the arguments for and against this view, and then give your own opinion.
Finish the exam to see your score. (Puanını görmek için sınavı bitir.)
"Sınavı Bitir" dediğinde Grammar (40), Listening (15) ve Reading (20) bölümlerin otomatik puanlanır, tüm cevaplar kilitlenir ve yanlışların ünite bazında listelenir. Writing görevlerin öğretmenine gider; henüz göndermediysen yazdıkların otomatik gönderilir. Bu işlem geri alınamaz.
