Two years ago, nobody at Maple Hill School had ever made a radio programme. Today, the school has its own radio station, and it is run entirely by students. The idea began with a fifteen-year-old girl called Lara, who loved music and wanted to share it with her friends.
At first, the teachers weren't sure. They thought the project would take too much time, and they worried that students would forget their normal lessons. However, Lara had already prepared a clear plan. She showed the head teacher how the station could be used for school news, interviews and even language practice. After she had explained everything, the teachers finally agreed.
The first months were difficult. The old computer in the music room broke twice, and the microphone was so quiet that nobody could hear the presenters. Lara and her team have solved most of these problems since then. New equipment was bought with money from a school fair, and a local engineer taught the students how to record clean sound.
Today the station broadcasts every Friday afternoon. Studies by the teachers have shown that students who join the club speak more confidently in class, not less. Some shy students, who never spoke in lessons before, now present their own shows. The programmes are listened to by hundreds of families at home.
Lara believes the future will be even brighter. 'If every school had a station like ours,' she says, 'students would enjoy learning much more. A microphone is not just a toy — it is a way to find your voice.'

Last spring, our class won a competition, and the prize was a three-day trip to the mountains. We had wanted to go there for years, so everyone was excited. But two weeks before the trip, we almost lost our chance.
The problem was money. The school had promised to pay for the bus, but the company suddenly raised its prices. Our teacher, Mr. Aydın, told us that the trip might be cancelled. We were very disappointed, because we had already packed our bags in our heads.
