Ela has played in the Green Valley School band since 2024, and in that time the band has changed a lot. When she joined, there were only three members, and they practised in a tiny room next to the kitchen. Now there are more than twenty students in the band, and Ela has become the leader — the youngest leader in the band's history.
Her first year was not easy. While she was learning her first difficult song, the band lost an important competition, and everybody felt sad. Some members left, but Ela stayed because she believed in the band. That winter, the group worked hard on a new show, and it won a regional prize in May. Since then, more students have wanted to join, and the little room has never been quiet again.
Ela has never forgotten her worst day in the band. Two summers ago, she deleted all their recorded songs by mistake while she was cleaning the old files on the band's computer. She has made many mistakes since her first day, she says, but that one taught her the most important lesson: always make a copy before you touch anything.
Last month, the band moved to a bigger room near the sports hall. The move took two days, and everybody carried instruments while the rain was falling outside. Ela has already decorated the new room with posters, but she hasn't learned every instrument yet. "I have been in this band for two years," she says, "and it still feels like my first week — there is always a new song. I haven't finished learning, and I hope I never will."

The Green Valley School band is going to have a very busy year. In February, the band is going to start a new group for younger students, and about fifteen children will join it. Mr. Kaya, who has led the music lessons for ten years, will help both groups, but he isn't going to travel to other schools. "I'll invite other bands here instead," he says. "If we play well at the spring festival, the school will invite us every year."
The biggest project is a new song which helps younger students remember their notes. The students who wrote last year's show are going to write it, and Ela will lead the singing. The song must be ready before the spring festival in June, because the whole school wants to hear it in July. If the festival goes well, the school will invite the band again next year. "It's the most important project we have ever had," says Ela. "Unless we practise every week, we will not be ready in time."
There are also some smaller plans. The band is going to practise twice a week, so Ela is planning the new timetable these days. Students who join before March will get free lessons. The old music room, which is too small for twenty people, is going to become a quiet study room, and the school will build new shelves near the door, where there is more space.
Not everyone is happy about every change. A few students think the new hall is too far from the classrooms, and they should not have to carry heavy instruments so far. But most people agree: next year is going to be the most exciting year in the band's history.
