Every time you eat a crunchy apple, a sweet strawberry or a spoonful of honey, there is a tiny insect you ought to thank: the honeybee. Bees may look small and unimportant as they buzz from flower to flower, yet the quiet work they do keeps a huge part of our food growing. Without them, our meals would be far less colourful, and far less sweet.
The secret lies in something called pollination. As a bee lands on a flower to drink its sugary nectar, a fine yellow dust called pollen sticks to its furry body. When the bee flies on to the next flower, some of that pollen rubs off, and this is exactly what the plant needs in order to make seeds and fruit. In this way, a single bee can help hundreds of flowers in a single morning.
Life inside a beehive is wonderfully organised. Thousands of bees live together, and each one has a job to do. Some clean the hive, some guard the entrance, and some fly out to search for flowers. When a bee finds a good patch of blossom, it does not keep the news to itself; instead, it performs a special 'waggle dance' that tells the other bees exactly where to go.
Sadly, bees today face a number of serious problems. Farmers sometimes use strong chemicals that can harm them, and the wild meadows where bees once found plenty of flowers are slowly disappearing. When there are fewer flowers, there is less food, and hungry bees find it much harder to survive the long winter.
The good news is that everyone can help, even children. Planting a few flowers in a garden or on a balcony gives bees somewhere to feed, and leaving a shallow dish of water outside offers them a safe place to drink. These may seem like tiny actions, but if enough people take them, they could make an enormous difference to the future of these remarkable little insects.

Leo had not climbed into the old treehouse for two whole years, and as he stood at the bottom of the garden that afternoon, he could not quite say why he had stayed away so long. He told his friends he had simply grown too busy with football and homework; but the real reason, he suspected, was closer to worry — the worry that the little wooden house he remembered so fondly might have fallen apart, or might never have been quite as wonderful as he recalled.

It was the smell, though, rather than any of these sights, that took him by surprise — the warm, dusty scent of old wood, which carried him straight back to long summer afternoons spent hiding from the rain. On the wall, a faded drawing of a pirate ship, made when he was seven, was still pinned in place.
Leo sat down on the wooden floor and looked out through the little window at the garden below. He did not feel sad, as he had feared he might. Instead, he felt oddly grateful. The treehouse had not changed at all; it was he who had grown taller, older and busier. Somehow, knowing that his favourite hiding place was still here, still standing, made the whole world feel a little safer.
When he finally climbed back down, the afternoon light was turning golden. Leo promised himself that he would not leave it another two years before returning. Some places, he realised as he walked back towards the house, are worth visiting again and again — not because they have changed, but precisely because they have not.
