Reading (2 metin · 20 soru)

Suggested time: 25 minutes. (Önerilen süre: 25 dakika.) Text 1 can sıkıntısının gizli faydasını, Text 2 hata yapmanın iyi yanını tartışır. (Text 1 explores the hidden benefit of boredom; Text 2 argues for the good side of making mistakes.)

Text 1 · Why Boredom Is Not the Enemy

There is a familiar complaint, heard in almost every home, that there is simply nothing to do. Grown-ups tend to treat a child's boredom as a small emergency, something to be fixed at once with a screen or a snack. Yet boredom, far from being the enemy of a good afternoon, may quietly turn out to be one of its friends.

Consider what actually happens in an empty hour. At first the mind protests, restless and cross. Then, if nothing rushes in to rescue it, something rather wonderful begins: the imagination stirs. A cardboard box becomes a spaceship; a rainy window becomes a story. What felt like emptiness turns out to be room — room for ideas that a busy afternoon would never have allowed.

None of this means that every dull moment is precious, which would be silly. It is, rather, a gentle reminder that a child who is never bored is never quite free to invent. Boredom is not a hole to be filled at once; it is, far more often than we admit, the very beginning of play.

A · True / False (Questions 1-5 — Text 1)

Are these sentences true or false? (Bu cümleler doğru mu, yanlış mı?) Dikkat: bazı cümleler mantıklı görünür ama metinde söylenmez.

B · Multiple Choice (Questions 6-10 — Text 1)

Choose the correct answer. (Doğru cevabı seç.)

Text 2 · The Good Side of Getting It Wrong

Few feelings are as unwelcome to a young learner as making a mistake. We go red, we wish the ground would swallow us, and we promise ourselves never to raise a hand again. Were we to look more closely at how learning really works, however, the picture would turn out to be far kinder.

Consider the simple act of learning to ride a bicycle. Nobody wobbles onto the saddle and pedals off perfectly the first time. Every fall teaches the body something a lecture never could, and each small mistake quietly rewrites the plan for the next attempt. What looks like plain failure is, in truth, the brain gathering exactly the information it needs.

None of this means we should be careless, which helps no one at all. It is, rather, a plea for courage. A mistake is not proof that we cannot do something; it is simply a step we have not yet finished climbing. Had we feared our errors a little less, we might have learned a great deal more.

C · Gap Fill (Questions 11-15 — Text 2, one word)

Complete the sentences with one word from the text. (Cümleleri metinden bir kelimeyle tamamla.)

Writing (2 görev)

Suggested time: 35 minutes — Task 1: 13 min, Task 2: 22 min. (Önerilen süre: 35 dakika — Görev 1: 13 dk, Görev 2: 22 dk.) Öğretmenin değerlendirecek; örnek cevap yoktur.

Task 1 · Formal Email: A Toy That Was Not as Described (130-170 words)

You saved up your pocket money and ordered a toy online, but when it arrived it was not the same as the one shown in the picture. Write a formal email to the toy shop. Explain what was promised and what actually arrived, describe how this made you feel, and state clearly what you would like them to do.

  • Use a formal opening and closing: "Dear Sir / Madam," ... "Yours faithfully," / "Yours sincerely,". (resmi açılış ve kapanış — genre conventions)
  • Use at least one passive / impersonal structure: "I was assured that...", "It was stated that the course would...". (edilgen / kişiliksiz yapı)
  • Use one cleft sentence for emphasis: "What I find unacceptable is...", "It was only after paying that I discovered...". (vurgu için cleft)
  • Maintain a consistently formal register and make a firm but polite request: "I would therefore be grateful if you could...". (tutarlı resmi üslup + kibar rica)
  • 130-170 words, formal register throughout. (130-170 kelime)
E-POSTA YAPISI
  • Açılış: "Dear Sir / Madam," + yazma sebebin (I am writing to complain about / regarding...).
  • Gövde: vaat edilen (passive + reported speech) → gerçekte olan → etkisi → beklediğin işlem (would/could + refund/repeat).
  • Kapanış: "I look forward to your prompt response." + "Yours faithfully," + adın.

Task 2 · Argument Essay: Should Children Get Homework Every Day? (200-260 words)

Some people argue that children should be given homework every day, while others believe children learn better with more free time to play and rest. Discuss both views and give your own opinion, supporting it with clear reasons and examples.

  • Discuss both views before giving your own opinion. (kendi görüşünden önce iki görüşü de tartış)
  • Use at least three discourse markers for contrast and concession: whereas, nevertheless, that said, admittedly, conversely. (en az üç söylem belirleyicisi)
  • Use hedging and stance devices to qualify your claims: "it could be argued that...", "arguably", "to some extent". (savı yumuşatma / tutum)
  • Use at least one cleft or inversion for emphasis and one nominalisation (it is argued that..., "the widespread assumption that..."). (vurgu için cleft/devrik + isimleştirme)
  • 200-260 words, organised into clear paragraphs. (200-260 kelime)
