Almost every child, at some point, becomes a collector. It might begin with a single shiny pebble picked up on the way home, or a football sticker swapped in the playground. Before long, a shoebox under the bed is overflowing, and each new addition feels strangely important. To an adult glancing in, the box may look like a jumble of odds and ends; to its owner, however, it is a carefully guarded treasure.
What makes collecting so appealing? Part of the answer lies in the thrill of the hunt. Finding the one shell you have been searching for, or completing a set of cards at last, brings a burst of satisfaction that few other activities can match. The rarer the item, the greater the delight — and the longer the search, the sweeter the reward.
Yet collecting is about far more than simply owning things. A collection tells a story. Each object carries a memory: the beach where a shell was found, the friend who gave away a spare sticker, the rainy afternoon spent sorting everything into neat rows. Years later, opening that old shoebox can bring a whole summer flooding back.
Collecting also teaches skills that are easy to overlook. To build a good collection, a child must learn to organise, to compare, and to be patient. Swapping cards in the playground is, in its own small way, a lesson in negotiation. Deciding which items to keep and which to trade away means weighing value and making difficult choices — the very habits that prove useful throughout life.
Of course, not every collection lasts. Interests change, and a box of once-precious treasures may be pushed to the back of a cupboard and forgotten. But this is no reason for regret. The pleasure was never really in the finished collection; it was in the searching, the sorting and the sharing along the way. Even a collection that is abandoned has already done its quiet work.
There is also something to be said for collecting together. A collection shared with friends or family becomes a link between people. Grandparents may pass down a jar of old coins; classmates may spend whole break times comparing their finds. In this way, a simple hobby can bring people closer, giving them something to talk about and to enjoy side by side.
So the next time you see a child clutching a battered box of shells, stamps or stickers, remember that it is not really the objects that matter. What matters is the curiosity, the patience and the joy of discovery that the collection represents — and those are treasures that no shoebox could ever hold.

In an age of glowing screens, it might seem that the library has had its day. Almost any fact can now be found in seconds on a phone, and thousands of books can be stored on a single tablet. Yet walk into a library on a quiet afternoon and you will find it far from empty. Something about the place continues to draw people in, young and old alike.
Part of the magic lies in the sheer act of choosing. Online, a search gives you exactly what you asked for and nothing more. In a library, by contrast, you wander between the shelves, and a book you had never heard of catches your eye. This happy accident — stumbling upon something wonderful you were not even looking for — is one of the great pleasures of the place.
A library is also a rare kind of space. It costs nothing to enter, and everyone is welcome, whatever their age or background. Here, a child can sit beside a pensioner, each lost in a different world, and neither is asked to buy a thing. Few other places in a busy town offer such quiet, such warmth and such freedom, all at once.
Then there are the librarians themselves. Far from simply stamping books, they guide readers towards their next discovery, help students with tricky projects, and run clubs and story times that bring a whole neighbourhood together. A good librarian seems to know exactly which book will delight a nervous young reader, and that gift is not easily replaced by a machine.
None of this means that screens are the enemy. The internet has opened doors that earlier generations could only dream of, and libraries themselves now lend e-books and offer computers to those without them. Progress, as ever, brings gains as well as losses, and the wisest path is to enjoy the best of both.
Perhaps the truest value of a library is harder to measure. It is the hush that settles over you as the door closes behind you, the smell of old paper, the sense that you have stepped into a place built entirely around ideas. These are feelings that no download can quite capture.
So the next time you pass your local library, do not walk by. Step inside, breathe in the quiet, and let yourself wander. You may leave with an armful of books, or with nothing at all — but you will almost certainly leave a little richer than you arrived.
Complete the sentences with ONE word from the text. (Cümleleri metinden BİR kelimeyle tamamla.)
