Text 1 · The School with No Bells

At Green Hill School, something is missing. From the moment the children arrive in the morning until the moment they go home, there are no bells at all. In most schools, a loud bell rings at the end of every lesson, and everyone must stop at once. At Green Hill, the lessons simply flow into one another, and the children themselves decide when they are ready to move on to the next task.

The idea came from the head teacher, Mr Aydın, who had taught for more than twenty years. He had often noticed that a bell would ring just as a child was becoming really interested in something. 'A bell often cut a good idea in half before a child had finished it,' he explains. 'I wanted to give that time back to them.'

When the new plan was first suggested, not everyone was sure. Some teachers had been worried that the children would waste their time, chatting or staring out of the window instead of working. A few parents thought their sons and daughters would fall behind. For the first few weeks, the school watched carefully to see what would happen.

The results surprised almost everybody. Most of the children focused better and got more done, not less. Because nobody was rushing them, they finished their projects properly instead of leaving them half done. By the end of the year, the children were reading more, not less, and many of them said school felt calmer and happier than before.

Green Hill is still a small, quiet school, and its idea has not spread very far. So far, only a few other schools have come to visit and watch a lesson. Yet the teachers there believe they have learned something important: when children are given a little more control over their own time, they often learn better than anyone expected.

Text 2 · The Cat Who Came to School

It was a cold Monday morning when Class 4B first noticed the visitor. A small grey cat was sitting quietly on the wall outside their window, watching the children with calm, golden eyes. Nobody knew where it had come from, but it did not seem afraid at all.

At break time, the children ran outside to look. The cat did not run away. Instead, it rubbed against their legs and let them stroke its fur. 'Can we keep it?' asked Mia. Their teacher, Miss Kaya, laughed and said the cat probably had a home somewhere, but they could give it a name. After a long discussion, they named it Shadow, because of its soft, dark grey fur and the way it followed them silently around the playground.

Over the next few weeks, Shadow came back every day. It would wait on the wall each morning and slip into the classroom whenever the door was left open. Something wonderful began to happen. A shy boy called Deniz, who almost never spoke in class, began to read aloud whenever Shadow sat beside him. With the warm cat on his lap, he no longer felt nervous, and his voice grew stronger every day.

Not everyone had wanted the cat to stay. At the start, one teacher had suggested chasing it away so that it would not distract the class. Miss Kaya, however, disagreed. 'If we had chased it away,' she says now, 'we would have missed a wonderful little friend.'

By the summer, Shadow had become part of the class. The children had learned to be gentle, patient and calm, and even the noisiest of them spoke softly when the cat was asleep. 'A cat cannot do your homework,' Miss Kaya tells them with a smile, 'but it can teach you something just as important. Small acts of kindness can make a big difference.'
