Two years ago, nobody in Class 5B had ever grown a single vegetable. Today, the school has a big green garden, and it is looked after by the children themselves. The idea came from a ten-year-old boy called Emir, who loved plants and wanted to grow tomatoes at school.
At first, the teachers weren't sure. They thought the garden would get muddy and messy, and they worried that the children would forget their normal lessons. However, Emir had already drawn a clear plan. He showed his teacher how the garden could be used for science, maths and art lessons. After he had explained everything, the teachers finally said yes.
The first months were hard. The young plants were eaten by insects, and one week the whole garden was flooded by heavy rain. Emir and his friends have solved most of these problems since then. New tools were bought with money from a school cake sale, and a kind farmer taught the children how to keep the soil healthy.
Today the children pick fresh vegetables every Friday. Teachers say that pupils who work in the garden eat more vegetables at home, not fewer. Some shy children, who never spoke in class before, now happily show visitors around the garden. The vegetables are shared with families and the school kitchen.
Emir believes the future will be even greener. 'If every school had a garden like ours,' he says, 'children would love nature much more. A tiny seed is not just a plant — it is a big lesson.'

Last spring, our class won a quiz competition, and the prize was a day trip to the city zoo. We had wanted to go there for years, so everyone was excited. But one week before the trip, we almost lost our chance.
The problem was money. The school had promised to pay for the bus, but the company suddenly asked for more. Our teacher, Miss Deniz, told us that the trip might be cancelled. We were very sad, because we had already chosen which animals we wanted to see.
Then my friend Ayla had a clever idea. 'If we made a small sale,' she said, 'we could sell cakes and old toys and get the money ourselves.' At first some children laughed, but soon the whole class was baking. The sale was held in the school playground on a sunny Saturday, and lots of parents came.
To everyone's surprise, we got enough money in a single afternoon. The extra coins were given to the animal shelter as a gift. A few days later, the bus arrived, and we finally travelled to the zoo. The lions were very loud, but the baby elephant was everyone's favourite.
On the way home, we talked about the sale. Miss Deniz smiled and said, 'You have learned something more important than any lesson. When a group works together, almost nothing is impossible.'
