Lina had never been very interested in science until the winter she turned eleven. Her older cousin, who had studied engineering at university, came to stay for the holidays and brought a small box of motors and wires. By the end of the first week, Lina had already built a tiny robot that could move across the kitchen table. "You have a real talent for this," her cousin told her, and Lina has remembered those words ever since.
Building the robot was not easy. Lina tried three times before it finally worked, and while she was waiting for new parts, she had been reading every science book in the school library. Her teacher, Mr Kaya, noticed how hard she was working and lent her an old laptop. Lina says that this help was more important than any lesson, because it taught her never to give up when something went wrong.
Since that winter, Lina has entered two school competitions. Last year her robot won first prize, and now younger children often ask her to teach them. She told the school newspaper that she still could not quite believe it. "If I had given up after my first failure," she said, "none of this would have happened."

The head teacher has just announced an exciting plan for the empty yard behind our school, which has been closed to pupils for almost ten years. If the plan is accepted next month, work will begin in the spring, and the whole area is going to be turned into a garden and a small outdoor classroom.
Many pupils say that the garden could become the best part of the school. "If we don't start now, the old shed will fall down completely," said one teacher. Under the plan, the old greenhouse, which was built in 1995, is going to be repaired rather than knocked down, because a lot of people believe it should be saved. A new path will connect the garden to the sports field, so pupils will be able to walk there in two minutes.
Not everyone is happy. Some parents are worried that the building work will be noisy for a whole year. Others argue that the money would be better spent on new computers. A report which was written last week suggested that the project might cost twice as much as the school expects.
The head teacher has promised that pupils and parents will be asked for their ideas before any final decision is made. "If parents were against the plan," she said, "we would not go ahead." The first meeting is going to be held next Friday.
