Hedefin: her birini 30 saniyenin altında çözmek.
Kelime sorularında collocation avcısı ol
Kelime sorularında şıklardaki dört kelime de anlamca boşluğa yakın durabilir. İşin sırrı, cümledeki diğer kelimelerle hangi kelimenin birlikte kullanıldığında doğal durduğuna bakmaktır. Örneğin "make a decision", "take a risk", "pay attention" gibi kalıplar (collocations) tek tek kelime ezberlemekten daha değerlidir. Ezber yaparken kelimeyi tek başına değil, bir cümle veya kalıp içinde öğren.
Dil bilgisinde ipucu kelimeleri işaretle
Zaman sorularında cümledeki zaman zarflarını (already, since, for, yesterday, by the time) hemen yakala; bunlar hangi zamanı işaret ettiğini söyler.
Olumsuzluğun, koşulun ve derece bildiren kelimelerin (must, might, always) korunup korunmadığını mutlaka kontrol et.
Strateji bilmek yetmez; sınav ritmini kazanman gerekir.

The YDT, that is, the foreign language session of the YKS, can look intimidating at first glance. But let me tell you a secret: the YDT is actually an extremely predictable exam. Every year the same question types come at you with the same logic. This means that each section has its own solution strategy, and once you learn them your score rises quickly. In this guide we will tackle the exam section by section and, for each one, I will share the concrete tactics I teach my students in class.
The trick of the tradeThe YDT is actually an extremely predictable exam: every year the same question types come at you with the same logic. Each section has its own solution strategy; once you learn them your score rises quickly.
Get to Know the General Structure of the YDT
First, know your enemy. The YDT consists of multiple-choice questions and is entirely prepared in English (or in the language you chose); Turkish instructions in the question stems are almost nonexistent. The exam basically consists of these main sections:
- Vocabulary: choosing the most appropriate word for the blank.
- Grammar: choosing the tense, preposition, conjunction, or structure.
- Cloze test: filling consecutive blanks within a paragraph.
- Sentence completion: finding the continuation of an unfinished sentence.
- Translation: choosing the most accurate rendering, English-to-Turkish and Turkish-to-English.
- Paragraph (reading): comprehension questions based on a text.
- Closest in meaning: choosing the synonym of a given sentence.
- Additional types such as dialogue completion and the irrelevant sentence.
Most of your time will be eaten up by the paragraph and cloze test. That is why you should save time on the quickly solvable sections to give your reading questions room to breathe.
Vocabulary · grammar
The fast-scoring zone. On single-word items be a collocation hunter, and in grammar mark clue words such as time adverbs and conjunctions; aim to finish each question in under 30 seconds.
Cloze · sentence completion
Do not jump to the blank; read the whole paragraph once. The blanks feed one another, the conjunction tells you the expected meaning, and grammatical agreement eliminates wrong options.
Paragraph · translation
The bulk of the score is here, and these also take the most time. Read the question first, then enter the text; in translation the most faithful and complete rendering wins, not the most "elegant" one.
Vocabulary and Grammar: The Fast-Scoring Zone
The single-word vocabulary and grammar questions at the start of the exam are where you collect points the fastest. Your goal: solve each one in under 30 seconds.
Be a collocation hunter on vocabulary questions
On vocabulary questions, all four words in the options may sit close in meaning to the blank. The trick is to look at which word stands naturally when used together with the other words in the sentence. For example, patterns (collocations) such as "make a decision", "take a risk", "pay attention" are more valuable than memorizing words one by one. When memorizing, learn the word not in isolation but within a sentence or pattern.
In grammar, mark the clue words
In tense questions, immediately catch the time adverbs in the sentence (already, since, for, yesterday, by the time); these tell you which tense is being signaled. In conjunction (although, however, therefore) and preposition questions, ask yourself about the logical relationship between the two halves of the sentence: is there a contrast, a result, a cause? The right conjunction is determined by this relationship.
Cloze Test: Read the Whole Paragraph
In a cloze test there are blanks one after another in a single paragraph, and the blanks can be either vocabulary or grammar. The most common mistake is jumping straight to the blank and looking only at that sentence.
- First read the paragraph from start to finish once, quickly; grasp the topic and general flow.
- Then return to each blank. On conjunction blanks, look at the relationship between the preceding and following sentence.
- On vocabulary blanks, the topic of the paragraph narrows the meaning down for you; do not decide on a single sentence.
In a cloze test the blanks feed one another; when you have seen the whole paragraph, a choice that seemed meaningless on its own becomes clear.
Sentence Completion: Logic and Grammar Together
In sentence completion, half a sentence is given and you choose the correct continuation. Here, pay attention to two things at once:
- Coherence of meaning: is the continuing part consistent with the logic of the first half? Is the cause-effect, contrast, or condition relationship set up correctly?
- Grammatical agreement: if the sentence has "although," a contrasting statement is expected in the continuation; if it starts with "if," the conditional structure must hold; subject-verb and tense agreement must not be broken.
Tactic: First mark the conjunction or key structure in the sentence, then look at the options. The conjunction tells you the expected meaning, and grammatical agreement eliminates the wrong options. Often two options fit in meaning but one does not fit the sentence grammatically; that elimination leads you to the correct answer.
Translation Questions: The Most Accurate, Most Complete Rendering
In translation questions the goal is not "word for word" but finding the option that conveys the meaning fully and completely. The options are usually very similar to each other; a small word difference determines the correct answer.
- First determine the main idea and all the elements of the source sentence (subject, action, tense, negation).
- If an option gives the meaning correctly but has dropped or added a detail in the sentence (for example "probably," "always," a negation), that option is eliminated.
- Stay away from options that add an exaggerated, incomplete, or nonexistent judgment to the sentence.
In short, look for the most faithful and most complete rendering in translation; the one that wins is not the most "elegant"-looking translation but the most accurate one.
Closest in Meaning: The Logic of Paraphrase
In this type, you find the option that says the same thing as the given sentence in different words (paraphrase) without changing its meaning. The correct answer gives the same information as the original; neither more nor less.
Traps are usually set up like this: one option uses the same words but shifts the meaning slightly; another gives exactly the same meaning in different words. Do not say "this is correct" just because you see the same words; what matters is that the meaning is preserved. Be sure to check whether negation, condition, and degree words (must, might, always) are preserved.
Paragraph (Reading): Manage Your Time Wisely
Paragraph questions carry the bulk of the score and are the most time-consuming section. The most efficient method is this:
- First read the questions quickly, know what you are looking for, then enter the text.
- For a main-idea question, pay special attention to the first and last sentences.
- On detail questions, the answer is stated verbatim in the text; find the relevant place and compare the option with the text, do not guess.
- On inference questions, look for the conclusion the text implies but does not state outright; do not go beyond the text.
- On a vocabulary-meaning question, look at that word's context in the sentence, not its dictionary meaning.
When you get stuck on a text, do not linger; mark it, move on, and return if you have time. Leaving the questions you are sure about and getting stuck on ones you do not know is the most expensive mistake.
How Should You Study in the Final Months?
Knowing the strategy is not enough; you need to gain the rhythm of the exam. Here is what I recommend:
- Vocabulary every day: a little but regularly. Learn a certain number of words each day with their patterns and review them.
- Section-based study: first learn each question type one by one, solving slowly and correctly; speed comes later.
- Mock exam: solve full mocks against the clock; this is how you gain the exam-day tempo and stamina.
- Error log: write down why you got things wrong. Not repeating the same mistake is more valuable than learning a new topic.
"The YDT is as much a test of strategy and time management as it is a test of knowledge — once you grasp the logic of each section, the exam turns from a trap into a familiar road whose steps you already know.
Remember: the YDT is as much a test of strategy and time management as it is a test of knowledge. Once you grasp the logic of each section, the exam turns, for you, from a trap full of surprises into a familiar road whose steps you already know. With plenty of practice, regular review, and the right tactics, you can reach your goal. Good luck!
