Detailed guides to TOK — part of the IB Diploma core — covering everything from knowledge questions to the Essay and Exhibition, and from concepts to assessment.
Theory of Knowledge, IB Diploma Programme'in (DP) tam ortasında duran çekirdek derslerinden biridir; Extended Essay ve CAS ile birlikte diplomanın belkemiğini oluşturur.
Aşağıdaki yazılarda her bölümü adım adım, örnekler üzerinden ele alıyoruz.
Theory of Knowledge is one of the core courses sitting right at the heart of the IB Diploma Programme (DP); together with the Extended Essay and CAS, it forms the backbone of the diploma. TOK is not really a "subject" course; it does not teach you history, chemistry or mathematics. Instead, it asks: How do we know something? Why is what a scientist calls evidence different from what an artist calls intuition? How reliable is a historical record? This is exactly what TOK asks you to think about — the connections and tensions between different areas of knowledge. Most students ask "why am I doing this?" at first; but when approached the right way, TOK gives you a thinking skill that adds depth to all of your other courses.
In TOK there is no traditional exam that you sit down and answer. Your grade comes from two separate tasks, and together these two determine your overall TOK grade:
The Essay generally contributes to the total grade with a larger weight, while the Exhibition has a smaller share. Because the exact percentages and mark tables are updated from time to time, I recommend confirming the most accurate and up-to-date weighting from the official IB TOK guide provided by your school. The TOK letter grade (A to E), together with the Extended Essay, determines the extra points added to your diploma; a very low TOK/EE performance can create a "failing condition" that may prevent you from earning the diploma. In other words, neglecting TOK is a risky choice.
A very low TOK/EE performance can create a "failing condition" that may prevent you from earning the diploma; TOK is not secondary — it is a threshold you must clear.
On the Essay side, the work is about the quality of your thinking as much as your language. A good TOK essay takes a prescribed title seriously, discusses it through two different areas of knowledge, supports every claim with concrete and real examples, and then honestly addresses the counterclaim to that claim. Examiners are looking not for memorized definitions but for your own analysis and your ability to compare perspectives.
On the Exhibition side, the key is not to stay abstract. The three objects you choose must be real, specific objects with a context that belongs to you; not some random "concept image" from the internet. For each object, you need to clearly justify the connection between it and the IA prompt you chose. The most commonly lost marks here come from merely "describing" the object and failing to establish its connection to the prompt.
In short, TOK is a skill to be developed, not memorized. With regular thinking practice, real examples and clear academic writing, a strong performance in both the essay and the exhibition is possible. In the articles below, we address each section step by step, through examples.
