TOEFL iBT'ye hazırlanan adaylar için formattan dört becerinin stratejisine kadar ayrıntılı, güncel rehberler.
Detailed, up-to-date guides for candidates preparing for the TOEFL iBT — from the test format to strategies for all four skills.
The TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test) is an internet-based exam developed by ETS that measures how competent non-native speakers of English are in an academic setting. It is one of the most widely taken exams by those who want to pursue undergraduate, master's, or doctoral studies abroad. Its goal is not simply to ask "do you know grammar?"; it is to measure whether you can read a text, listen to a lecturer, and express your ideas by speaking and writing, just as you would in a real university course. That is why you should think of the TOEFL not as a memorization test but as a holistic language exam in which all four skills work together.
The TOEFL is not a "knowledge" test but a use test: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing are measured together, through real academic tasks. Memorization alone is not enough.
The TOEFL iBT consists of four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. Each of these four sections is scored from 0 to 30, and in total you obtain a score in the 0-120 range. The typical internal logic of the sections is as follows:
Because ETS may occasionally make updates to the exam format, be sure to confirm the section durations and question counts from current official sources before taking the test. Since these details may change, we do not give exact durations or question counts here; the most accurate information is always the up-to-date guide published by ETS.
Reading and Listening are largely scored objectively on a right-or-wrong basis. Speaking and Writing, on the other hand, are evaluated against specific criteria by both trained raters and automated scoring systems. The key concept here is this: the rater does not measure the correctness of your opinion but how clearly, coherently, and linguistically competently you express that opinion. In other words, there is no such thing as a "correct answer"; what matters is a well-organized, example-supported, fluent, and understandable response. In integrated tasks, your ability to accurately convey the information in the source (task response) determines a large part of your score.
Success on the TOEFL depends largely on the right habits. The roadmap I recommend to my students is as follows:
For free practice questions and skill-based study modules, you can make use of the interactive content in the TOEFL section of our platform; strengthening each skill separately is the approach that raises your total score the fastest.
Here are the mistakes I have seen again and again over years of preparing students:
Remember: the TOEFL is a learnable exam. With regular, skill-focused, and realistic study, reaching your goal is entirely possible. You can advance step by step with the guides and exercises below.
