From the band scale to the strategy behind all four skills — honest, in-depth guides for Turkish candidates preparing for IELTS.
IELTS'te geçme-kalma yoktur; bunun yerine 0'dan 9'a kadar uzanan band ölçeği kullanılır.
Soru tiplerini bilmeden çözülen testler zaman kaybettirir.
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is an exam that measures English proficiency and is accepted worldwide by universities, employers, and immigration authorities. It has two main types: Academic and General Training. If you want to pursue undergraduate or postgraduate study abroad, you will most likely take the Academic version; if you are applying for work, migration, or professional registration, you will take the General Training version. In both types the Listening and Speaking sections are the same; the content of the Reading and Writing sections, however, changes according to the type. Starting to study before deciding which type you will take is one of the most common time-wasting mistakes; so clarify your goal from the very beginning.
Before you start studying, decide whether you will take Academic or General Training. Listening and Speaking are the same in both types; but Reading and Writing change according to the type — studying for the wrong module is the most common waste of time.
IELTS measures four skills and the exam is taken in a single sitting:
In IELTS there is no pass or fail; instead, a band scale ranging from 0 to 9 is used. Each of the four sections receives its own band score, and their average forms your overall band score. For example, you might get 6.5 in one section and 7 in another. Universities and institutions often require a certain overall band score alongside a separate minimum for each section; that is, even if your overall average is sufficient, if a single section falls below the required threshold your application may run into trouble. That is why not neglecting your weakest skill is critically important. While Listening and Reading are scored objectively (based on the number of correct answers), Writing and Speaking are assessed against criteria such as task response/achievement, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy.
Effective preparation begins with genuinely getting to know the exam format first. Tests solved without knowing the question types waste time. I recommend these steps:
Listen actively, not passively: try to write down what you hear and compare it with the answer key. A spelling mistake makes even a correct answer count as wrong.
Don't read word by word; develop scanning (scanning) and skimming (skimming). Time management is decisive here.
Practice out loud, record yourself, and listen back. Fluency matters more than flawless grammar — don't pause, keep talking.
Knowing the points where students get stuck most keeps you from falling into the same traps. The most common mistakes are: writing an answer without reading what the question asks (especially drifting off topic in Writing); ignoring word-count limits; trying to paste memorized formulas in Speaking (examiners notice this immediately); missing one question in Listening and, in a panic, losing the following questions too; and trying to make progress by only solving tests without getting feedback. Remember, IELTS is as much a test of strategy and time management as it is a language test.
In the guides under this hub, we address each section separately, with sample question types and practical tips. You will also find detailed explanations for Writing Task 1 and Task 2 and topic-based preparation content for the Speaking section here. With the right plan and consistent study, reaching your target band score is entirely possible.
