Tüm ders, birbiriyle bağlantılı beş tema etrafında döner: Identities (kimlikler), Experiences (deneyimler), Human ingenuity (insan yaratıcılığı), Social organization (toplumsal düzen) ve Sharing the planet (gezegeni paylaşmak).

IB English B is a course within the language acquisition group of the International Baccalaureate (IB Diploma Programme). In other words, it is designed for students who are not native speakers of English but use English at an advanced level. The rationale here is very different from that of a vocabulary-memorization test: you are expected to understand and interpret English in real contexts and to produce it meaningfully through different text types. For this reason, IB English B is not a one-off proficiency exam like TOEFL or IELTS; it is a process spread over two years, in which classroom work and external exams come together.
IB English B is not a vocabulary-memorization test or a one-off proficiency exam: it is a language-acquisition process spread over two years, in which classroom work and external exams come together. Starting early and spreading the process out is far more effective than last-minute cramming.
The course is offered at two levels: HL (Higher Level) and SL (Standard Level). Their basic structure is the same; the difference lies in the expected depth, the length of the texts, and the requirement in HL to read two literary works. HL students are expected to discuss more abstract ideas and to work with longer, more complex texts.
The assessment consists of three main parts. Two are marked externally, and one is marked internally by the school:
The entire course revolves around five interconnected themes: Identities, Experiences, Human ingenuity, Social organization, and Sharing the planet. The texts and tasks in the exam draw on these themes; therefore, building vocabulary and practising generating ideas around them will serve you well.
Scoring is based less on the number of right or wrong answers and more on descriptive assessment criteria. In writing and speaking in particular, assessment is generally carried out along three axes: the richness and accuracy of the language you use, the clarity and development of the message you convey, and the conceptual understanding that shows how deeply you have grasped the theme. The final grade is given on a scale from 1 to 7; 7 is the highest level. Because the exact grade boundaries can change from one exam session to the next, it is healthier to aim for the criteria rather than fixate on a single "cut-off score."
The richness and accuracy of the English you use: vocabulary, collocation, grammar, and fluency.
The clarity and development of the idea you convey: coherent, purposeful, and well-justified content.
The contextual awareness that shows how deeply you grasp the theme, the target audience, and the text type.
The most common mistake is treating the course like a grammar test; in fact, the IB rewards ideas and communication. Other frequent mistakes include: in Paper 1, ignoring the target audience and writing every piece in the same register; in the oral, only describing the visual and failing to move on to comment and discussion; and, in HL, leaving the literary works until the last week. Starting early and spreading the process out is far more effective on this exam than one-off cramming.
In the sections below, we cover Paper 1 text types, Paper 2 listening and reading techniques, and Individual Oral strategies one by one. You will also get the chance to test yourself with free practice exercises.
