Comprehensive guides to CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service), one of the three core components of the IB Diploma Programme: what it is, the seven learning outcomes, the CAS project, portfolio evidence and reflective writing.
En çok merak edilen soruyu baştan cevaplayalım: CAS'a not verilmez. Band yok, puan yok, kesme değeri yok.
CAS'a not verilmez — band, puan, kesme değeri yok.
If you're an IB Diploma Programme (DP) student, you've probably heard about CAS as much as the Extended Essay and TOK, but you're not quite sure what it actually is. Don't worry, that's completely normal. CAS is the abbreviation of the words Creativity, Activity, Service, and it is one of the three compulsory core components of the DP. Let's answer the most-asked question right away: CAS is not graded. No band, no score, no cut-off. But that doesn't make it unimportant. On the contrary, completing CAS is a mandatory requirement for earning the diploma. In other words, no matter how good an Extended Essay you write, if you don't complete CAS your diploma will not be awarded. So don't fall into the "it's ungraded, I'll skip it" trap.
CAS is not graded — no band, score or cut-off. But completing CAS is a mandatory requirement for earning the diploma: if it isn't completed, your diploma will not be awarded no matter how good your Extended Essay is.
Through CAS, the IB wants to take you out of the classroom and into real life. The goal is to develop an individual who doesn't just chase grades, but who is curious, lives healthily, contributes to their community and can evaluate their own learning through reflection. This philosophy links directly to the IB Learner Profile. In short, CAS is the part of the programme that says "live what you learn." For Turkish students this can sometimes feel culturally unfamiliar, because in the system we're used to there's a perception that "whatever isn't measured isn't important." CAS is designed precisely to break that perception.
Creative thinking and original production such as art, music, design, writing and drama. Learning an instrument, a theatre club, writing a blog, designing a poster.
Physical effort for a healthy life. A sports team, hiking, dance, yoga, cycling. You don't have to be a star athlete; what matters is challenging yourself and your progress.
An unpaid, voluntary contribution to a community. The golden rule: it must be based on a genuine need and provide real benefit to the other party — the feeling of "I did a good deed" isn't enough.
CAS is "ungraded" but not "un-assessed." You move forward through three things:
Throughout this whole process you hold at least three formal interviews (beginning, interim and final) with a CAS coordinator/adviser. You collect the evidence in your CAS portfolio: written reflections, photos, videos, plans and feedback.
As gringlizce, this is the part that concerns you most. In CAS, the thing that will really challenge you isn't showing up to an activity, but writing reflection in English. A good reflection includes: What happened? What did I feel? What did I learn? What will I do next? The most common mistake here is narrating events like a diary ("Today we did this, then we did that"). The IB doesn't want that; it wants feeling, analysis and growth. For your English this is a golden opportunity: narrating in the past tense, connecting past experience, and analytical structures such as "I realised that..." and "This challenged me because..." develop naturally in CAS reflection. This skill also comes in handy in university application essays.
Start early, distribute the three strands in a balanced way, keep a few activities regular and long-term, and take a quick reflection note right after each experience, however short. Think of CAS not as a "to-do list" but as a two-year journey of growth. If you want to improve your English writing skills, you can check out our writing and reflection resources within the blog, and with our TOK and Extended Essay guides you can study the entire DP core in one place. Remember: the real reward of CAS isn't that it's part of your diploma, but the perspective it gives you.
