- Bağlaçlar (conjunctions): because, since, as — arkasına tam cümle (özne + fiil) alır. "…because prices rose."
- Edatlar / edat öbekleri (prepositions): because of, due to, owing to — arkasına isim öbeği alır. "…because of the rise in prices."
- Geçiş zarfları (transition adverbs): therefore, thus, consequently, as a result — iki bağımsız cümleyi noktalama ile bağlar. "Prices rose; therefore, sales fell."
- Fiiller (verbs): cause, lead to, result in, contribute to — nedeni doğrudan cümlenin yüklemi yapar. "The rise in prices caused a fall in sales."
Bağlaç → CÜMLE
because prices rose — arkasına özne + fiil
Edat → İSİM
because of the rise in prices — arkasına isim öbeği
Neden zor? Üç sebeple: (1) Türkçe tek kalıbı İngilizce üç-dört araca böler; (2) her aracın noktalaması farklıdır (özellikle therefore öncesi noktalı virgül); (3) resmiyet farkları vardır — so konuşmada doğal ama akademik girişte zayıf, owing to resmi, thus çok resmidir. Bu bölüm bu üç zorluğu tek tek çözer.
Every text answers a question: Why? and What happened as a result? A news sentence "Prices rose" hangs in the air on its own; the reader immediately expects why they rose and what this led to. This is what cause-effect language is: the whole set of words and patterns that link an event to its cause and its effect. Without this language sentences stay disconnected, an argument cannot be built, and academic writing collapses.
English does not use a single word to make this link; it splits the job across four different grammatical tools, each requiring a different grammar. For Turkish this split is artificial, because Turkish handles the same job with suffixes and a few conjunctions.
- Conjunctions: because, since, as — take a full clause (subject + verb) after them. "…because prices rose."
- Prepositions / prepositional phrases: because of, due to, owing to — take a noun phrase after them. "…because of the rise in prices."
- Transition adverbs: therefore, thus, consequently, as a result — link two independent clauses with punctuation. "Prices rose; therefore, sales fell."
- Verbs: cause, lead to, result in, contribute to — make the cause directly the predicate of the sentence. "The rise in prices caused a fall in sales."
Conjunction → CLAUSE
because prices rose — followed by subject + verb
Preposition → NOUN
because of the rise in prices — followed by a noun phrase
A Turkish parallel. Turkish has tools like "çünkü", "-dığı için", "nedeniyle / yüzünden", "bu yüzden / dolayısıyla", "yol açmak / neden olmak" — so the logic is the same. But whereas in Turkish "yüzünden" can be attached easily to both a noun ("yağmur yüzünden") and a verbal structure ("yağdığı için"), in English the word changes according to whether a noun or a clause follows. This single difference is the source of the Turkish learner's most frequent error.
Why is it hard? For three reasons: (1) Turkish splits a single mould into three or four English tools; (2) each tool has different punctuation (especially the semicolon before therefore); (3) there are differences in formality — so is natural in speech but weak in an academic opening, owing to is formal, thus is very formal. This section solves these three difficulties one by one.
- Neden = niçin oldu (sebep). Sonuç = bunun getirdiği (etki). Neden-sonuç dili ikisini birbirine bağlar.
- because / since / as = bağlaç; arkasına cümle gelir: because it was late.
- because of / due to / owing to = edat; arkasına isim gelir: because of the delay.
- Altın kural: because + cümle, ama because OF + isim. İkisini karıştırma.
- so sonucu bağlar (konuşma dili): It was late, so we left.
- therefore / thus / consequently / as a result sonucu bağlar (resmi); öncesinde nokta veya noktalı virgül, sonrasında virgül gelir.
- İki cümleyi sadece virgül + therefore ile birleştirmek yanlıştır (comma splice): yanlış Prices rose, therefore sales fell. → doğru Prices rose; therefore, sales fell.
- Fiiller: cause, lead to, result in, contribute to (neden → sonuç); result from, stem from, be caused by (sonuç ← neden).
- due to geleneksel olarak isim/be fiiliyle en güvenli: The delay was due to fog.
- Resmiyet sırası (gündelik → resmi): so < because < as a result < therefore < consequently < thus.
İki bağımsız cümleyi yalnızca virgül + therefore ile birleştirme: Prices rose, therefore sales fell ✗ → Prices rose; therefore, sales fell ✓.
Gündelikten resmîye: so < because < as a result < therefore < consequently < thus. Akademik girişte so zayıf, thus çok resmîdir.
- Cause = why it happened (the reason). Effect = what it brought (the result). Cause-effect language links the two.
- because / since / as = conjunction; a clause follows: because it was late.
- because of / due to / owing to = preposition; a noun follows: because of the delay.
- The golden rule: because + clause, but because OF + noun. Do not confuse the two.
- so links a result (spoken language): It was late, so we left.
- therefore / thus / consequently / as a result link a result (formal); a period or semicolon comes before, a comma after.
- Joining two clauses with only a comma + therefore is wrong (comma splice): wrong Prices rose, therefore sales fell. → correct Prices rose; therefore, sales fell.
- Verbs: cause, lead to, result in, contribute to (cause → effect); result from, stem from, be caused by (effect ← cause).
- due to is traditionally safest with a noun/the verb be: The delay was due to fog.
- Order of formality (everyday → formal): so < because < as a result < therefore < consequently < thus.
Do not join two independent clauses with only a comma + therefore: Prices rose, therefore sales fell ✗ → Prices rose; therefore, sales fell ✓.
From everyday to formal: so < because < as a result < therefore < consequently < thus. In an academic opening so is weak, thus is very formal.
Neden-sonuç ilişkisi kurulurken kritik soru şudur: arkasına ne gelecek — cümle mi, isim mi, yoksa iki cümleyi mi bağlıyorum? Aracı buna göre seçeriz. Aşağıda üç ana yapıyı sırayla kuruyoruz.
Bağlaç
because, since, as + cümle
Edat
because of, due to + isim
Geçiş zarfı
therefore, thus + noktalama
1) Bağlaç + CÜMLE (because / since / as)
Formül: ana cümle + because/since/as + (özne + fiil). Bağlaç, kendinden sonra tam bir cümle ister. Neden cümlesi başa da gelebilir; başa gelince arasına virgül konur: Because it was late, we left.
2) Edat + İSİM (because of / due to / owing to)
Formül: ana cümle + because of/due to/owing to + isim öbeği. Arkasına cümle GELMEZ; sadece isim, isim öbeği ya da -ing (ulaç) gelir. owing to en resmisi; due to özellikle be fiilinden sonra çok doğaldır.
3) Geçiş zarfı ile iki cümleyi bağlama (therefore / thus / as a result)
Formül: Bağımsız cümle 1 + nokta veya noktalı virgül + therefore/thus/consequently/as a result + virgül + Bağımsız cümle 2. Geçiş zarfı gramatik bir bağlaç DEĞİLDİR; sadece iki cümlenin mantığını gösterir, o yüzden ikisi arasında güçlü bir durak (nokta/noktalı virgül) şarttır.
Olumsuz ve soru biçimleri
Neden-sonuç araçları olumsuzluğu genelde bağlı oldukları cümlenin fiilinde taşır; aracın kendisi değişmez. Soruda ise Why…? ve What caused…? / What was the reason for…? kalıpları öne çıkar.
| Soru / durum | Doğal kısa cevap | Türkçe |
|---|---|---|
| Why did the game stop? | Because of the rain. | Yağmur yüzünden. |
| Why is she tired? | Because she worked all night. | Bütün gece çalıştığı için. |
| What caused the crash? | A software bug did. | Bir yazılım hatası (neden oldu). |
| So what happened next? | As a result, prices rose. | Sonuç olarak fiyatlar arttı. |
When building a cause-effect relationship, the critical question is: what will follow — a clause, a noun, or am I joining two clauses? We choose the tool accordingly. Below we build the three main structures in turn.
Conjunction
because, since, as + clause
Preposition
because of, due to + noun
Transition adverb
therefore, thus + punctuation
1) Conjunction + CLAUSE (because / since / as)
Formula: main clause + because/since/as + (subject + verb). The conjunction requires a full clause after it. The reason clause can also come first; when it does, a comma is placed after it: Because it was late, we left.
2) Preposition + NOUN (because of / due to / owing to)
Formula: main clause + because of/due to/owing to + noun phrase. A clause does NOT follow; only a noun, noun phrase or -ing (gerund). owing to is the most formal; due to is especially natural after the verb be.
3) Joining two clauses with a transition adverb (therefore / thus / as a result)
Formula: Independent clause 1 + period or semicolon + therefore/thus/consequently/as a result + comma + Independent clause 2. A transition adverb is NOT a grammatical conjunction; it only shows the logic of the two clauses, so a strong stop (period/semicolon) between them is essential.
Negative and question forms
Cause-effect tools generally carry negation on the verb of the clause they attach to; the tool itself does not change. In questions the patterns Why…? and What caused…? / What was the reason for…? stand out.
| Question / situation | Natural short answer | Turkish |
|---|---|---|
| Why did the game stop? | Because of the rain. | Because of the rain. |
| Why is she tired? | Because she worked all night. | Because she worked all night. |
| What caused the crash? | A software bug did. | A software bug did. |
| So what happened next? | As a result, prices rose. | As a result, prices rose. |
Aynı neden-sonuç bağını farklı bağlamlarda farklı araçlarla kurarız. En yaygın kullanımdan daha özel ve akademik kullanımlara doğru gidelim.
A) Günlük neden bildirme — because / so
B) İsimle neden bildirme — because of / due to (haber, ilan, rapor)
C) Sonuç bağlama — so / therefore / as a result
D) Fiille neden-sonuç — cause / lead to / result in / contribute to (akademik)
E) Ters yön: sonuçtan nedene — result from / stem from / be caused by
We build the same cause-effect link with different tools in different contexts. Let us go from the most common use toward more specialized and academic uses.
A) Everyday cause-giving — because / so
B) Cause-giving with a noun — because of / due to (news, notices, reports)
C) Linking a result — so / therefore / as a result
D) Cause-effect with a verb — cause / lead to / result in / contribute to (academic)
E) Reverse direction: from effect to cause — result from / stem from / be caused by
Neden-sonuç dilinde 'zaman ifadesi' yerine sinyal sözcükleri vardır: metinde bir kelimeyi görünce hangi işlevin geldiğini tahmin edebilirsin. Ama dikkat — bu sinyaller garanti değildir; aynı kelime bazen başka işlevde de kullanılır.
| İşlev | Sinyal sözcükleri | Arkasına ne gelir? |
|---|---|---|
| Neden (bağlaç) | because, since, as, seeing that, given that, in that | CÜMLE (özne + fiil) |
| Neden (edat) | because of, due to, owing to, on account of, thanks to, as a result of | İSİM / isim öbeği / -ing |
| Sonuç (geçiş zarfı) | therefore, thus, hence, consequently, as a result, accordingly, for this reason | Yeni bağımsız CÜMLE (nokta/noktalı virgül sonrası) |
| Sonuç (bağlaç) | so, so that, so … that, such … that | CÜMLE |
| Neden→sonuç (fiil) | cause, lead to, result in, bring about, give rise to, contribute to, trigger | İSİM / -ing (bazıları + nesne + to) |
| Sonuç←neden (fiil) | result from, stem from, arise from, be caused by, be due to | İSİM (neden) |
In cause-effect language, instead of 'time expressions' there are signal words: when you see a word in a text, you can predict which function is coming. But be careful — these signals are not a guarantee; the same word is sometimes used in another function.
| Function | Signal words | What follows? |
|---|---|---|
| Cause (conjunction) | because, since, as, seeing that, given that, in that | CLAUSE (subject + verb) |
| Cause (preposition) | because of, due to, owing to, on account of, thanks to, as a result of | NOUN / noun phrase / -ing |
| Result (transition adverb) | therefore, thus, hence, consequently, as a result, accordingly, for this reason | New independent CLAUSE (after a period/semicolon) |
| Result (conjunction) | so, so that, so … that, such … that | CLAUSE |
| Cause→effect (verb) | cause, lead to, result in, bring about, give rise to, contribute to, trigger | NOUN / -ing (some + object + to) |
| Effect←cause (verb) | result from, stem from, arise from, be caused by, be due to | NOUN (the cause) |
Araçlar 'neden-sonuç' üst başlığını paylaşsa da aralarında ince anlam ve ton farkları vardır. Doğru aracı seçmek, cümlenin kesinliğini, resmiyetini ve odağını değiştirir.
because vs since vs as — yeni bilgi mi, bilinen bilgi mi?
because genelde okuyucunun bilmediği, cümlenin asıl vurgusu olan yeni bir neden verir ve çoğunlukla cümlenin sonunda durur. since ve as ise çoğu zaman zaten bilinen / kabul edilmiş bir nedeni sunar ve cümlenin başında rahat durur.
contribute to — 'katkı', tek neden değil
cause ve lead to güçlü, doğrudan bir neden ima eder. contribute to ise 'birçok etkenden biri' der; ihtiyatlı, akademik bir tonu vardır. Bilim yazısında kesin nedensellik iddiasından kaçınmak için bilinçle seçilir.
Kesinlik derecesi ve nezaket
Nedenselliği yumuşatmak için may / can / could + lead to / result in kullanılır; bu, iddiayı mutlaklıktan çıkarır ve akademik ihtiyatı gösterir. Ayrıca resmi ricalarda neden vermek nezaket katar.
Although the tools share the heading 'cause-effect', there are subtle differences in meaning and tone between them. Choosing the right tool changes the certainty, formality and focus of the sentence.
because vs since vs as — new information or known information?
because generally gives a new cause the reader does not know, one that is the main emphasis of the sentence, and it usually stands at the end of the sentence. since and as, on the other hand, usually present an already-known / accepted cause and sit comfortably at the start of the sentence.
contribute to — 'a contribution', not the sole cause
cause and lead to imply a strong, direct cause. contribute to, on the other hand, says 'one of many factors'; it has a cautious, academic tone. In scientific writing it is chosen deliberately to avoid a claim of definite causation.
Degree of certainty and politeness
To soften causation, may / can / could + lead to / result in is used; this removes the absoluteness from the claim and shows academic caution. Also, giving a reason in a formal request adds politeness.
Türkçe neden-sonuç bağını çoğunlukla eklerle ve az sayıda bağlaçla kurar; İngilizce ise ayrı kelimelerle. En kritik fark: Türkçede 'yüzünden / nedeniyle' hem isme hem fiilimsili yapıya kolayca eklenirken, İngilizcede arkasına isim mi cümle mi geldiğine göre kelime değişir.
- Türkçe -dığı için / -diğinden → İngilizce because/since/as + cümle (isim değil).
- Türkçe -den dolayı / yüzünden / nedeniyle (isimle) → İngilizce because of / due to / owing to + isim.
- Türkçe bu yüzden / dolayısıyla / bu nedenle → İngilizce therefore / thus / consequently (noktalama ister!).
- Türkçe çünkü cümle başında rahat durur; İngilizce cümleye Because… ile başlamak konuşmada olur ama tek başına cümle olarak yazıda zayıftır (bkz. istisnalar).
- Türkçe -e yol açmak / neden olmak → İngilizce lead to / cause / result in; ama İngilizce fiilin arkasına isim/-ing gelir, Türkçedeki gibi yönelme ekiyle değil.
Turkish mostly builds the cause-effect link with suffixes and a small number of conjunctions; English uses separate words. The most critical difference: whereas in Turkish 'yüzünden / nedeniyle' can be attached easily to both a noun and a verbal structure, in English the word changes according to whether a noun or a clause follows.
- Turkish -dığı için / -diğinden → English because/since/as + clause (not a noun).
- Turkish -den dolayı / yüzünden / nedeniyle (with a noun) → English because of / due to / owing to + noun.
- Turkish bu yüzden / dolayısıyla / bu nedenle → English therefore / thus / consequently (needs punctuation!).
- Turkish çünkü sits comfortably at the start of a sentence; starting an English sentence with Because… is fine in speech but is weak as a standalone sentence in writing (see exceptions).
- Turkish -e yol açmak / neden olmak → English lead to / cause / result in; but the English verb is followed by a noun/-ing, not by a dative suffix as in Turkish.
Neden-sonuç dili, birkaç akraba söylem işleviyle karıştırılır. Aşağıdaki tablo, sık karışan yapıları ayırır.
| İşlev | Tipik araçlar | Ayırt edici soru |
|---|---|---|
| Neden-sonuç | because, due to, therefore, lead to | Niçin oldu? Sonucu ne? |
| Zıtlık / ödün (bkz. Karşılaştırma Dili) | although, however, whereas, despite | Beklentiye rağmen mi? |
| Amaç (purpose) | in order to, so that, to + fiil | Ne amaçla? Ne için? |
| Koşul (condition) | if, unless, provided that | Hangi şartla? |
| Ekleme / sıralama (bkz. Yönlendirme Dili) | moreover, in addition, first, next | Sıradaki nokta ne? |
En kritik karışma neden ile amaç arasındadır. Türkçe '-mek için' hem neden hem amaç için kullanılabilir: 'Geç kaldığı için' (neden) — 'Yetişmek için' (amaç). İngilizcede neden because, amaç in order to / so that'tir. Ayrıca so (sonuç: 'bu yüzden') ile so that (amaç: '…sın diye') karıştırılmamalıdır.
Cause-effect language is confused with a few related discourse functions. The table below distinguishes the frequently confused structures.
| Function | Typical tools | Distinguishing question |
|---|---|---|
| Cause-effect | because, due to, therefore, lead to | Why did it happen? What is its result? |
| Contrast / concession (see Comparison Language) | although, however, whereas, despite | Despite the expectation? |
| Purpose | in order to, so that, to + verb | For what purpose? What for? |
| Condition | if, unless, provided that | On what condition? |
| Addition / sequencing (see Signposting Language) | moreover, in addition, first, next | What is the next point? |
The most critical confusion is between cause and purpose. The Turkish '-mek için' can be used for both cause and purpose: 'Geç kaldığı için' (because) — 'Yetişmek için' (purpose). In English, cause is because, purpose is in order to / so that. Also, so (result: 'therefore') must not be confused with so that (purpose: 'so that … can').
Kurallar sağlam ama birkaç önemli özel durum var; bunları bilmek metnini hem doğru hem doğal yapar.
1) 'Because' ile cümleye başlamak
Okulda 'Cümleye Because ile başlama' diye öğretilir; bu aslında eksik cümle (sentence fragment) uyarısıdır. Ana cümle varsa Because ile başlamak tamamen doğrudur: Because it was late, we left. Yasak olan, tek başına Because it was late. demektir (yarım kalır).
2) '-ing' ile neden (edat + ulaç)
Neden edatlarının arkasına isim yerine -ing (ulaç) gelebilir; bu, cümleyi isimleştirmenin kısa yoludur.
3) 'so … that' ve 'such … that' — sonuç vurgusu
Derece + sonucu tek yapıda birleştirir: so + sıfat/zarf + that, such + (a) + sıfat + isim + that.
4) 'hence' ve sonrasında isim öbeği
Çok resmi/akademik hence, bazen tam cümle yerine kısa bir isim öbeği ile kullanılır: The data were incomplete, hence the caution. ('…, bu yüzden bu ihtiyat').
The rules are solid, but there are a few important special cases; knowing them makes your text both correct and natural.
1) Starting a sentence with 'Because'
At school you are taught 'Don't start a sentence with Because'; this is actually a warning about a sentence fragment. If there is a main clause, starting with Because is entirely correct: Because it was late, we left. What is forbidden is saying Because it was late. on its own (it stays incomplete).
2) Cause with '-ing' (preposition + gerund)
Instead of a noun, a -ing (gerund) can follow a cause preposition; this is a short way of nominalizing a clause.
3) 'so … that' and 'such … that' — result emphasis
Combines degree + result in a single structure: so + adjective/adverb + that, such + (a) + adjective + noun + that.
4) 'hence' followed by a noun phrase
The very formal/academic hence is sometimes used with a short noun phrase instead of a full clause: The data were incomplete, hence the caution. ('…, hence this caution').
Günlük konuşmada neden-sonuç ağırlıklı olarak because ('cause), so ve that's why ile kurulur; therefore/thus/consequently konuşmada nadir ve fazla resmidir.
In everyday speech, cause-effect is mostly built with because ('cause), so and that's why; therefore/thus/consequently are rare and too formal in speech.
Akademik yazıda neden-sonuç dili argümanın iskeletidir. Burada so yerine therefore/thus/consequently, because yerine sık sık since/as/given that veya fiil kalıpları (lead to, result in, be attributable to) tercih edilir. Ayrıca akademik ihtiyat için nedensellik çoğu zaman yumuşatılır (may/could, contribute to). Resmiyet ayarı için bkz. Akademik Register.
- Konuşma 'so' → akademik 'therefore / consequently / as a result'.
- Kesin 'cause' → ihtiyatlı 'may contribute to / appears to be associated with'.
- Fiil isimleştirme: 'because prices rose' → 'due to the rise in prices' (daha yoğun, akademik).
- Neden zinciri kurarken 'which in turn' bağlayıcısı çok işlevseldir: A leads to B, which in turn causes C.
- 'can be attributed to' = çok resmi, ihtiyatlı neden bildirme (edilgen).
- 'has led to' ve 'has given rise to' = fiil kalıbıyla nedensellik; akademik.
- 'Because … , factories were able…' = bağlaç + tam cümle, başta virgülle.
- 'As a result,' ve 'Consequently,' = geçiş zarfı; yeni cümle başında virgülle.
- 'stem from a combination of' = tek nedene indirgememe; ihtiyatlı akademik ton.
- 'Owing to the complexity…' = resmi edat + isim öbeği, cümle başında.
- 'since industrial emissions would continue' = 'since' burada 'çünkü' (bilinen neden).
In academic writing, cause-effect language is the skeleton of the argument. Here therefore/thus/consequently is preferred over so, and since/as/given that or verb patterns (lead to, result in, be attributable to) are often preferred over because. Also, for academic caution, causation is often softened (may/could, contribute to). For adjusting formality see Academic Register.
- Spoken 'so' → academic 'therefore / consequently / as a result'.
- Definite 'cause' → cautious 'may contribute to / appears to be associated with'.
- Nominalizing a verb: 'because prices rose' → 'due to the rise in prices' (denser, academic).
- When building a causal chain, the connector 'which in turn' is very useful: A leads to B, which in turn causes C.
- 'can be attributed to' = a very formal, cautious cause-giving (passive).
- 'has led to' and 'has given rise to' = causation with a verb pattern; academic.
- 'Because … , factories were able…' = conjunction + a full clause, with a comma at the start.
- 'As a result,' and 'Consequently,' = transition adverbs; with a comma at the start of a new sentence.
- 'stem from a combination of' = not reducing to a single cause; a cautious academic tone.
- 'Owing to the complexity…' = a formal preposition + noun phrase, at the start of the sentence.
- 'since industrial emissions would continue' = 'since' here is 'because' (a known cause).
- 'largely due to the roadworks' = edat + isim; 'due to' + isim öbeği.
- 'Because the pavement was blocked,' = bağlaç + tam cümle, başta virgülle.
- 'as a result, morning sales dropped' = geçiş zarfı, virgülle.
- 'it triggered a second problem' = 'trigger' = tetiklemek; canlı bir neden fiili.
- 'Since fewer loaves were selling, … so Mara was throwing…' = 'since' (çünkü) + sonuç 'so'; iki farklı işlev bir arada.
- 'The waste, in turn, ate into…' = 'in turn' zincirde bir sonucun yeni neden olması.
- 'because the cost of flour had risen; consequently, …' = bağlaç + geçiş zarfı; noktalı virgül kullanımı.
- 'Thanks to these adjustments,' = olumlu neden edatı ('sayesinde').
- 'largely due to the roadworks' = preposition + noun; 'due to' + noun phrase.
- 'Because the pavement was blocked,' = conjunction + a full clause, with a comma at the start.
- 'as a result, morning sales dropped' = transition adverb, with a comma.
- 'it triggered a second problem' = 'trigger' = to set off; a vivid cause verb.
- 'Since fewer loaves were selling, … so Mara was throwing…' = 'since' (because) + the result 'so'; two different functions together.
- 'The waste, in turn, ate into…' = 'in turn' shows one result becoming a new cause in the chain.
- 'because the cost of flour had risen; consequently, …' = conjunction + transition adverb; use of the semicolon.
- 'Thanks to these adjustments,' = a positive cause preposition ('thanks to').

Aşağıdaki sorular kural ezberini değil, anlamı yoklar. Cümleyi oku, mantığı düşün, sonra cevabı aç.
- 'The match was cancelled due to the storm.' — Fırtına maçtan önce mi sonra mı gerçekleşti ve hangisi neden?Fırtına önce/eşzamanlı gerçekleşti ve NEDEN'dir; maçın iptali SONUÇ'tur. 'due to' arkasındaki şey her zaman nedendir.
- 'Sales fell; therefore, the shop closed.' — Hangi olay diğerinin sonucu?Dükkânın kapanması, satışların düşmesinin SONUCU. 'therefore' öncesindeki cümle neden, sonrasındaki sonuçtur.
- 'The fire resulted from a gas leak.' — Neden hangisi, sonuç hangisi?Gaz kaçağı NEDEN, yangın SONUÇ. 'result FROM' geriye bakar: özne (fire) sonuç, 'from'dan sonrası (gas leak) nedendir.
- 'She was upset, so she left.' ile 'She was upset because she left.' arasındaki mantık farkı ne?İlkinde üzgün olmak neden, ayrılmak sonuç. İkincisinde ayrılmak neden, üzgün olmak sonuç. 'so' ve 'because' neden-sonuç yönünü ters çevirir.
- 'Smoking contributes to heart disease' cümlesi 'Smoking causes heart disease'den anlamca nasıl farklı?'contributes to' sigarayı tek neden değil, katkıda bulunan etkenlerden biri olarak sunar; 'causes' ise daha güçlü, doğrudan bir nedensellik iddia eder.
The questions below probe not rule memorization but meaning. Read the sentence, think about the logic, then reveal the answer.
- 'The match was cancelled due to the storm.' — Did the storm happen before or after the match, and which is the cause? The storm happened before/simultaneously and is the CAUSE; the cancellation of the match is the EFFECT. The thing after 'due to' is always the cause.
- 'Sales fell; therefore, the shop closed.' — Which event is the result of the other? The shop closing is the RESULT of sales falling. The clause before 'therefore' is the cause, the one after is the result.
- 'The fire resulted from a gas leak.' — Which is the cause, which is the effect? The gas leak is the CAUSE, the fire is the EFFECT. 'result FROM' looks backward: the subject (fire) is the effect, what comes after 'from' (gas leak) is the cause.
- What is the difference in logic between 'She was upset, so she left.' and 'She was upset because she left.'?In the first, being upset is the cause and leaving is the result. In the second, leaving is the cause and being upset is the result. 'so' and 'because' reverse the cause-effect direction.
- How is 'Smoking contributes to heart disease' different in meaning from 'Smoking causes heart disease'?'contributes to' presents smoking not as the sole cause but as one of the contributing factors; 'causes' claims a stronger, more direct causation.
- The flight was delayed ____ heavy fog.because of / due to (arkasında isim: 'heavy fog')
- We missed the train ____ we left home too late.because (arkasında cümle: 'we left home too late')
- It was raining, ____ we took a taxi.so (sonuç bağlacı, konuşma dili)
- The data were incomplete; ____, the study was inconclusive.therefore (noktalı virgül sonrası geçiş zarfı)
- Careless driving ____ a serious accident.led to (fiil + isim: 'a serious accident')
- The event was postponed ____ the organiser's illness.due to / because of (isim öbeği)

Görev. Yaşadığın veya gözlemlediğin bir neden-sonuç zinciri hakkında 120-160 kelimelik bir paragraf yaz (örn. bir alışkanlığın etkileri, bir kararın sonuçları, bir toplumsal sorunun kökeni). En az bir bağlaç (because/since/as), bir edat (because of/due to/owing to), bir geçiş zarfı (therefore/thus/consequently/as a result) ve bir fiil kalıbı (lead to/result in/contribute to/stem from) kullan. Noktalamaya, özellikle geçiş zarfı öncesi noktalı virgüle dikkat et.
- Rehber sorular: Ana neden ne? Doğrudan sonuç ne? Bu sonuç başka neye yol açtı (zincir)? Tek neden mi, birden çok etken mi?
- En az bir yerde nedeni yumuşat (may/could + lead to / contribute to) — akademik ihtiyat.
- Bir 'which in turn' veya 'as a result' ile zinciri görünür kıl.
- Bitince kendi kontrolün: her 'because of/due to' arkasında isim mi? her 'therefore' öncesinde nokta/noktalı virgül mü?
Task. Write a 120-160 word paragraph about a causal chain you have experienced or observed (e.g. the effects of a habit, the consequences of a decision, the roots of a social problem). Use at least one conjunction (because/since/as), one preposition (because of/due to/owing to), one transition adverb (therefore/thus/consequently/as a result) and one verb pattern (lead to/result in/contribute to/stem from). Pay attention to punctuation, especially the semicolon before a transition adverb.
- Guiding questions: What is the main cause? What is the direct effect? What did this effect lead to (chain)? Is it a single cause, or several factors?
- In at least one place, soften the cause (may/could + lead to / contribute to) — academic caution.
- Make the chain visible with a 'which in turn' or 'as a result'.
- When done, self-check: is there a noun after every 'because of/due to'? Is there a period/semicolon before every 'therefore'?
Kavram kontrolü için soyut kural sorma; anlam sorusu sor. Örn. tahtaya 'The road was closed ___ the flood.' ve 'The road was closed ___ the water was rising.' yaz; öğrenci ikisinin neden farklı (because of / because) olduğunu kendi keşfetsin. Bu, kuralı ezberletmekten çok daha kalıcıdır.
- Sık hata teşhisi: öğrenci 'because of' + cümle yapıyorsa, kökü Türkçe 'yüzünden'in çift kullanımıdır; bunu açıkça adlandır.
- Noktalama etkinliği: comma splice'lı 5 cümle ver, öğrenci noktalı virgül/nokta ile düzeltsin.
- Sıralama kartları: 'because / because of / therefore / so / due to' kartlarını dağıt; her cümle için doğru kartı kaldırsınlar (kinestetik).
- Register merdiveni: aynı cümleyi so → because → therefore → thus ile yeniden yazdır; resmiyetin nasıl arttığını hissettir.
- Yön oyunu: 'result in' / 'result from' için ok çizdirme; en kalıcı düzeltme budur.
For the concept check don't ask an abstract rule; ask a meaning question. E.g. write on the board 'The road was closed ___ the flood.' and 'The road was closed ___ the water was rising.'; let the student discover for themselves why the two differ (because of / because). This is far more lasting than memorizing the rule.
- Frequent-error diagnosis: if the student uses 'because of' + clause, the root is the double use of the Turkish 'yüzünden'; name this explicitly.
- Punctuation activity: give 5 sentences with comma splices, have the student fix them with a semicolon/period.
- Ordering cards: hand out cards for 'because / because of / therefore / so / due to'; for each sentence they raise the correct card (kinaesthetic).
- Register ladder: have them rewrite the same sentence with so → because → therefore → thus; let them feel how the formality rises.
- Direction game: have them draw arrows for 'result in' / 'result from'; this is the most lasting correction.
- Neden-sonuç dili dört araçla kurulur: bağlaç (because/since/as + cümle), edat (because of/due to/owing to + isim), geçiş zarfı (therefore/thus/consequently + noktalama), fiil (cause/lead to/result in/contribute to).
- Altın kural: OF varsa isim gelir; OF yoksa cümle gelir. 'because + cümle', 'because of + isim'.
- due to / owing to isim ister; cümle alamaz. 'due to' özellikle 'be' fiiliyle doğaldır.
- Geçiş zarfları (therefore, thus, consequently, as a result) iki cümleyi virgülle bağlayamaz; öncesinde nokta veya noktalı virgül, sonrasında virgül gelir. Aksi hâlde comma splice hatası.
- Fiil yönü kritik: result IN / lead to ileri (neden→sonuç), result FROM / stem from / be caused by geri (sonuç←neden).
- contribute to ve may/could + lead to ihtiyatlı; akademik yazıda kesin 'cause' yerine tercih edilebilir.
- Register sırası: so < because < as a result < therefore < consequently < thus. 'so' konuşmada, 'therefore/thus' akademik yazıda.
- Sinyal sözcükleri yardımcıdır ama garanti değildir: since hem 'çünkü' hem '-den beri'; thanks to genelde olumlu neden.
- Neden (because) ile amaç (so that / in order to) ve zıtlık (although / despite — bkz. Karşılaştırma Dili) farklı işlevlerdir; karıştırma.
- Türk öğrencinin bir numaralı tuzağı: Türkçe 'yüzünden'i her yere 'because of' diye taşımak. İsim mi cümle mi diye dur, sonra seç.
- Cause-effect language is built with four tools: conjunction (because/since/as + clause), preposition (because of/due to/owing to + noun), transition adverb (therefore/thus/consequently + punctuation), verb (cause/lead to/result in/contribute to).
- The golden rule: if there is OF, a noun follows; if there is no OF, a clause follows. 'because + clause', 'because of + noun'.
- due to / owing to need a noun; they cannot take a clause. 'due to' is especially natural with the verb 'be'.
- Transition adverbs (therefore, thus, consequently, as a result) cannot join two clauses with a comma; a period or semicolon comes before, a comma after. Otherwise it is a comma splice error.
- Verb direction is critical: result IN / lead to forward (cause→effect), result FROM / stem from / be caused by backward (effect←cause).
- contribute to and may/could + lead to are cautious; in academic writing they can be preferred over a definite 'cause'.
- Order of formality: so < because < as a result < therefore < consequently < thus. 'so' in speech, 'therefore/thus' in academic writing.
- Signal words help but are not a guarantee: since means both 'because' and 'from…on'; thanks to is usually a positive cause.
- Cause (because), purpose (so that / in order to) and contrast (although / despite — see Comparison Language) are different functions; do not confuse them.
- The Turkish learner's number-one trap: carrying the Turkish 'yüzünden' everywhere as 'because of'. Stop and check whether it is a noun or a clause, then choose.
