Causative (ettirgen) yapı, İngilizcede çok temel ama Türk öğrencinin sıkça atladığı bir ayrımı taşır: bir işi kendin mi yaptın, yoksa başkasına mı yaptırdın? Türkçede bunu tek bir ekle hallederiz — -tir/-dir/-t ekiyle: "yaptım" ama "yaptırdım", "kestim" ama "kestirdim". İngilizcede böyle bir ek yoktur; onun yerine have, get, make, let gibi yardımcı fiillerle ayrı bir cümle iskeleti kurulur.
Kendin yapmak
I cut my hair. — makas elinde, işi bizzat sen yaparsın.Yaptırmak (causative)
I had my hair cut. — işi bir profesyonele yaptırırsın; odak sonuçta.Bu yapı neden var? Çünkü "Saçımı kestim" ile "Saçımı kestirdim" arasında kocaman bir anlam farkı vardır. Birincisinde makası eline alıp kendi saçını kesen sen varsın; ikincisinde kuaföre gidip işi ona yaptıran sen varsın. İngilizcede I cut my hair dersen "kendi saçımı kendim kestim" anlaşılır ki bu genelde kastettiğin şey değildir. Doğru cümle I had my hair cut — yani "saçımı kestirdim"dir.
Konu neden zorlar? Üç sebepten. Birincisi, Türkçedeki tek ekin karşılığında İngilizcede birden fazla fiil (have/get/make/let) ve iki ayrı kalıp vardır. İkincisi, bu kalıplarda fiilin bazen V3 (past participle), bazen yalın hâli, bazen de to + fiil olması gerekir — hangisi ne zaman? Üçüncüsü, yapı edilgen çatı ile görsel olarak benzeştiği için (ikisinde de V3 var) öğrenci ikisini karıştırır. Bu bölüm bu karmaşayı adım adım çözer.
The causative structure carries a very basic distinction in English that Turkish students often skip: did you do it yourself, or did you have someone else do it? In Turkish we handle this with a single suffix — the -tir/-dir/-t suffix: "yaptım" but "yaptırdım", "kestim" but "kestirdim". English has no such suffix; instead it builds a separate sentence skeleton with helping verbs like have, get, make and let.
Doing it yourself
I cut my hair. — scissors in hand, you do the job in person.Having it done (causative)
I had my hair cut. — you have a professional do the job; the focus is on the result. Why does this structure exist? Because there is a huge difference in meaning between "Saçımı kestim" (I cut my hair) and "Saçımı kestirdim" (I had my hair cut). In the first, it's you who picked up the scissors and cut your own hair; in the second, it's you who went to the hairdresser and had them do the job. In English, if you say I cut my hair, it is understood as "I cut my own hair myself", which is usually not what you mean. The correct sentence is I had my hair cut — that is, "I had my hair cut".
Why is the topic difficult? For three reasons. First, in place of Turkish's single suffix, English has several verbs (have/get/make/let) and two separate patterns. Second, in these patterns the verb sometimes has to be the V3 (past participle), sometimes the bare form, and sometimes to + verb — which one, and when? Third, because the structure looks visually similar to the passive voice (both have V3), students confuse the two. This section untangles that confusion step by step.
- Causative = bir işi başkasına yaptırmak ya da birine bir şey yaptırmak/ettirmek.
- İki ana kalıp var. Kalıp 1 (nesne odak): have/get + nesne + V3 — I had my car washed.
- Kalıp 2 (kişi odak): have/make/get/let + kişi + fiil — I made him wait.
- Kalıp 1'de fiil hep V3 (past participle): washed, cut, repaired, painted.
- Kalıp 2'de fiil kalıba göre değişir: make/have/let + yalın fiil; get + to + fiil.
- have = düzenleme/organizasyon; get = çaba/ikna; make = zorlama; let = izin.
- Zaman ve özne yardımcı fiilde işlenir: had, will get, have had — ana fiil (V3) sabit kalır.
- İstem dışı kötü olaylar da bu kalıpla anlatılır: I had my bike stolen (bisikletim çalındı).
- Türkçedeki -tir/-dir ettirgen ekinin İngilizce karşılığıdır: kestir → have cut, boyat → have painted.
- Görünüşte edilgene benzer ama özne işi yaptıran kişidir, edilgende yoktur.
- Causative = having someone else do a task, or making/getting someone to do something.
- There are two main patterns. Pattern 1 (object focus): have/get + object + V3 — I had my car washed.
- Pattern 2 (person focus): have/make/get/let + person + verb — I made him wait.
- In Pattern 1 the verb is always V3 (past participle): washed, cut, repaired, painted.
- In Pattern 2 the verb changes with the pattern: make/have/let + bare verb; get + to + verb.
- have = arranging/organising; get = effort/persuasion; make = forcing; let = permission.
- Tense and subject are handled on the helping verb: had, will get, have had — the main verb (V3) stays fixed.
- Involuntary bad events are also expressed with this pattern: I had my bike stolen (my bike was stolen).
- It is the English equivalent of the Turkish causative suffix -tir/-dir: kestir → have cut, boyat → have painted.
- It looks like the passive but here the subject is the person who has it done, which the passive lacks.
Causative iki iskelet üzerine kurulur. Önce her ikisini de tek tek görelim; her birinin olumlu, olumsuz ve soru hâlleri var.
Kalıp 1 — İş yaptırma (nesne odak): have/get + nesne + V3
Formül: özne + have/get (çekimli) + nesne + V3 (past participle). Buradaki mantık: işin kim tarafından yapıldığı önemli değildir; önemli olan işin yapılmış olmasıdır. Zaman ve özne bilgisi have/get üzerinde taşınır; V3 sabit durur.
Olumsuz (Kalıp 1)
Olumsuzluk yardımcı fiille kurulur; ana yapı bozulmaz: don't/doesn't/didn't + have, ya da get için don't get. "Yaptırmıyorum / yaptırmadım" anlamı çıkar.
Soru (Kalıp 1)
| Soru | Olumlu kısa cevap | Olumsuz kısa cevap |
|---|---|---|
| Do you get your car washed? | Yes, I do. | No, I don't. |
| Did she have the dress altered? | Yes, she did. | No, she didn't. |
| Have they had it repaired? | Yes, they have. | No, they haven't. |
Kalıp 2 — Birine yaptırma (kişi odak): have/make/get/let + kişi + fiil
Formül: özne + have/make/get/let + kişi + fiil. Burada odak, işi kimin yaptığıdır — o kişiyi açıkça söyleriz. Fiilin biçimi hangi yardımcıyı seçtiğine bağlıdır: make/have/let yalın fiil ister (to YOK), get ise to + fiil ister.
| Yardımcı | Kişiden sonra fiil | Örnek | Anlam |
|---|---|---|---|
| make | yalın (V1) | made him apologise | zorlama (özür diletti) |
| have | yalın (V1) | had the technician check it | düzenleme (kontrol ettirdi) |
| let | yalın (V1) | let me leave early | izin (erken çıkmama izin verdi) |
| get | to + V1 | got her to sign | ikna/rica (imzalattı) |
The causative is built on two skeletons. Let's look at each one in turn; each has affirmative, negative and question forms.
Pattern 1 — Having a task done (object focus): have/get + object + V3
Formula: subject + have/get (conjugated) + object + V3 (past participle). The logic here: it doesn't matter who did the task; what matters is that the task has been done. Tense and subject information are carried on have/get; the V3 stays fixed.
Negative (Pattern 1)
The negative is formed with the helping verb; the main structure stays intact: don't/doesn't/didn't + have, or for get, don't get. It gives the meaning "I don't / didn't have it done".
Question (Pattern 1)
| Question | Affirmative short answer | Negative short answer |
|---|---|---|
| Do you get your car washed? | Yes, I do. | No, I don't. |
| Did she have the dress altered? | Yes, she did. | No, she didn't. |
| Have they had it repaired? | Yes, they have. | No, they haven't. |
Pattern 2 — Having someone do it (person focus): have/make/get/let + person + verb
Formula: subject + have/make/get/let + person + verb. Here the focus is who does the task — we name that person explicitly. The form of the verb depends on which helper you choose: make/have/let require a bare verb (NO 'to'), while get requires to + verb.
| Helper | Verb after the person | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| make | bare (V1) | made him apologise | forcing (made him apologise) |
| have | bare (V1) | had the technician check it | arranging (had it checked) |
| let | bare (V1) | let me leave early | permission (let me leave early) |
| get | to + V1 | got her to sign | persuasion/request (got her to sign) |
Causative gerçek hayatta sandığından çok daha sık geçer. En yaygın kullanımdan daha özele doğru gidelim.
1) Hizmet aldığımız işler (en yaygın) — have/get something done
Kuaför, tamirci, terzi, temizlikçi, diş hekimi... Bir profesyonelin bizim için yaptığı her işte bu kalıp kullanılır. Türkçedeki "kestirmek, tamir ettirmek, diktirmek, temizletmek"in tam karşılığıdır.
2) Birini bir işe zorlamak — make somebody do
Kişinin isteğine bakılmaksızın bir şeyi yaptırmak. Otorite, kural ya da güçlü bir baskı vardır. Türkçedeki "-tir" + zorlama tonunu taşır: koşturdu, bekletti, ödettirdi.
3) Birini ikna edip/uğraşıp yaptırmak — get somebody to do
Burada zorlama değil, ikna, rica, uğraş vardır. Kişi sonunda gönüllü yapar ama sen bir çaba harcamışsındır. Türkçede "ikna ettim, ayarladım, razı ettim" tonundadır.
4) Düzenleyerek/organize ederek yaptırmak — have somebody do
Genelde daha resmi ve iş bağlamlıdır; bir konumun/yetkinin gereği olarak birine iş verirsin. Zorlama yok, düzenleme var.
5) İzin vermek — let somebody do
Teknik olarak causative ailesindendir çünkü aynı kalıbı kullanır, ama anlamı "yaptırmak" değil "izin vermek/engellememek"tir. Yalın fiil ister.
The causative comes up far more often in real life than you might think. Let's move from the most common use towards the more specific.
1) Tasks we pay for (most common) — have/get something done
Hairdresser, mechanic, tailor, cleaner, dentist... This pattern is used for every job a professional does for us. It is the exact equivalent of the Turkish "kestirmek, tamir ettirmek, diktirmek, temizletmek".
2) Forcing someone into a task — make somebody do
Having something done regardless of the person's wishes. There is authority, a rule, or strong pressure. It carries the Turkish "-tir" plus a forcing tone: koşturdu, bekletti, ödettirdi.
3) Getting someone to do it by persuasion/effort — get somebody to do
Here there is no forcing, but persuasion, request, effort. The person eventually does it willingly, but you have made an effort. In Turkish it has the tone of "ikna ettim, ayarladım, razı ettim".
4) Having it done by arranging/organising — have somebody do
Usually more formal and in a work context; you assign a task to someone as part of a role/authority. No forcing, just arranging.
5) Giving permission — let somebody do
It technically belongs to the causative family because it uses the same pattern, but its meaning is not "having done" but "allowing/not preventing". It requires a bare verb.
Causative'in gücü, aynı işi farklı fiillerle söyleyip ince anlam farkları yaratabilmenizde yatar. Aşağıdaki dört inceliğe hakim olan öğrenci C1 seviyesinde konuşur.
have
Nötr / düzenleme: işi ayarlarsın. I had the room painted.
get
Çaba / ikna: uğraşıp yaptırırsın. I got him to help.
make
Zorlama: istese de istemese de. She made me wait.
let
İzin: yapmasına olanak verirsin. They let us go.
have vs get — düzenleme mi, çaba mı?
İkisi de "yaptırmak" demektir ama have daha nötr/resmidir ve işin rahatça düzenlendiğini ima eder; get ise daha gündelik olup arkada bir çaba, uğraş ya da ikna olduğunu sezdirir. "I had it fixed" nötrken, "I got it fixed" hafifçe "uğraştım ama hallettim" tonu taşır.
İstem dışı olaylar — başına gelme
Aynı have/get + nesne + V3 kalıbı, hoş olmayan ve senin istemeden başına gelen olayları da anlatır. Burada "yaptırma" yoktur; tam tersine kurbanı sensin. Bağlamdan hangisi olduğu anlaşılır: I had my hair cut (kestirdim, isteyerek) ama I had my hair pulled (saçım çekildi, başıma geldi).
Nezaket ve dolaylılık
Causative, bir işi bizzat kendin yapmadığını belirterek konuşmayı yumuşatır. "I'll have someone call you" demek, "I'll call you"dan daha kurumsal ve mesafeli, çoğu zaman daha kibar durur. Ayrıca sorumluluğu paylaştırır.
Vurgu — işin kendisi mi, yapan mı?
Kalıp 1 (have my car repaired) işin sonucuna/kendisine odaklanır — tamirciyi umursamayız. Kalıp 2 (have the mechanic repair my car) işi kimin yaptığına odaklanır — tamirci sahnededir. Aynı olayı hangi açıdan anlatmak istediğine göre seçersin.
The power of the causative lies in being able to say the same task with different verbs to create fine differences in meaning. A student who masters the four subtleties below is speaking at C1 level.
have
Neutral / arranging: you arrange the task. I had the room painted.
get
Effort / persuasion: you make an effort to have it done. I got him to help.
make
Forcing: whether they want to or not. She made me wait.
let
Permission: you allow them to do it. They let us go.
have vs get — arranging or effort?
Both mean "to have done", but have is more neutral/formal and implies the task was arranged smoothly; get is more casual and hints that there was some effort, trouble or persuasion behind it. "I had it fixed" is neutral, while "I got it fixed" carries a slight "I had to work at it but I managed" tone.
Involuntary events — something happening to you
The same have/get + object + V3 pattern also describes unpleasant events that happen to you involuntarily. Here there is no "having done"; on the contrary, you are the victim. Context makes clear which one it is: I had my hair cut (I had it cut, on purpose) but I had my hair pulled (my hair was pulled, it happened to me).
Politeness and indirectness
The causative softens speech by indicating that you are not doing a task in person. Saying "I'll have someone call you" is more corporate and distant than "I'll call you", and often sounds more polite. It also spreads the responsibility.
Emphasis — the task itself, or the doer?
Pattern 1 (have my car repaired) focuses on the result/task itself — we don't care about the mechanic. Pattern 2 (have the mechanic repair my car) focuses on who does the task — the mechanic is on stage. You choose based on which angle you want to tell the same event from.
Türkçe, ettirgenliği tek bir -tir/-dir/-t/-r ekiyle çözer ve bu ek fiilin gövdesine yapışır: yap→yaptır, kes→kestir, oku→okut, boya→boyat. İngilizcede böyle bir ek yoktur; bunun yerine ayrı bir cümle iskeleti (have/get/make + nesne/kişi + fiil) kurulur. İşte tam da bu yüzden Türk öğrenci çoğu zaman eki 'unutur' ve düz fiil kullanır — çünkü İngilizcede tutunacak bir ek yoktur.
- Türkçe: tek ek (kestirdim). İngilizce: üç parçalı yapı (had my hair cut).
- Türkçede özne ve zaman aynı fiilde: kestir-di-m. İngilizcede zaman/özne yardımcıda (had), ana fiil sabit (cut).
- Türkçede işi yapan kişiyi belirtmek için -e/-a hâli yeter: "kuaföre kestirdim". İngilizcede Kalıp 2 gerekir: "had the hairdresser cut it".
- Türkçede ettirgen üst üste binebilir (yap-tır-t-tır: birine birine yaptırttırmak). İngilizce bunu 'have X get Y to do' gibi zincirlerle, çok daha seyrek kurar.
- Türkçe ettirgen ile edilgen ekleri farklıdır (-tir vs -il/-in). İngilizcede causative Kalıp 1 ile edilgen aynı V3'ü paylaşır — asıl karışıklık burada doğar.
Turkish solves causativity with a single -tir/-dir/-t/-r suffix, and this suffix attaches to the verb stem: yap→yaptır, kes→kestir, oku→okut, boya→boyat. English has no such suffix; instead, a separate sentence skeleton (have/get/make + object/person + verb) is built. This is exactly why the Turkish student often 'forgets' the suffix and uses a plain verb — because in English there is no suffix to hold on to.
- Turkish: a single suffix (kestirdim). English: a three-part structure (had my hair cut).
- In Turkish the subject and tense are on the same verb: kestir-di-m. In English the tense/subject are on the helper (had), the main verb stays fixed (cut).
- In Turkish, the dative case -e/-a is enough to name the doer: "kuaföre kestirdim". In English you need Pattern 2: "had the hairdresser cut it".
- In Turkish the causative can stack (yap-tır-t-tır: having one person get another to do something). English builds this with chains like 'have X get Y to do', far more rarely.
- In Turkish the causative and passive suffixes are different (-tir vs -il/-in). In English, causative Pattern 1 shares the same V3 as the passive — this is where the real confusion arises.
Causative en çok üç yapıyla karıştırılır. Farkları netleştirelim.
| Yapı | Örnek | Kim yapıyor? | Fark |
|---|---|---|---|
| Causative Kalıp 1 | I had my car washed. | Başkası (kuaför/tamirci) | Özne işi YAPTIRIR; sonuç odaklı. |
| Edilgen (Edilgen Çatı) | My car was washed. | Belirsiz/söylenmez | Özne ETKİLENEN şey; yaptıran yok. |
| Düz etken | I washed my car. | Öznenin kendisi | Özne işi BİZZAT yapar. |
| make/get + kişi | I got him to wash it. | Adı geçen kişi | İşi kimin yaptığı sahnede; ikna/zorlama. |
Dikkat: get + kişi + to do kalıbı, mastar–ulaç seçimiyle iç içedir. 'get' burada to-mastar isterken 'make/have/let' yalın mastar ister. Bu yüzden causative'i öğrenirken mastar biçimlerini de tazelemek gerekir. Ayrıca dolaylı anlatımda "He told me to leave" gibi kalıplar da to-mastar alır; bunları dolaylı anlatım konusunda görürsün.
The causative is most often confused with three structures. Let's clarify the differences.
| Structure | Example | Who does it? | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Causative Pattern 1 | I had my car washed. | Someone else (hairdresser/mechanic) | The subject HAS the task DONE; result-focused. |
| Passive (Passive Voice) | My car was washed. | Unknown/not stated | The subject is the AFFECTED thing; no one having it done. |
| Plain active | I washed my car. | The subject themselves | The subject does the task IN PERSON. |
| make/get + person | I got him to wash it. | The named person | Who does the task is on stage; persuasion/forcing. |
Note: the get + person + to do pattern is intertwined with the gerund-infinitive choice. 'get' here requires the to-infinitive, while 'make/have/let' require the bare infinitive. That is why, when learning the causative, you also need to refresh the infinitive forms. Also, in reported speech, patterns like "He told me to leave" take the to-infinitive; you will see these in the reported speech topic.
Causative'in birkaç özel durumu ve deyimsel köşesi vardır; C1 öğrencisi bunları tanır.
1) Edilgen 'be made to do': make'ten sonra normalde 'to' yoktur, AMA yapı edilgen yapıldığında 'to' geri döner: They made him leave → He was made to leave. Bu, sınavda sık çıkan bir tuzaktır.
2) 'help' hem to'lu hem to'suz: help fiili causative'e yakın durur ve istisnaî olarak her iki biçimi de kabul eder: She helped me (to) move. İkisi de doğrudur; to'suz biçim günümüz İngilizcesinde daha yaygındır.
3) 'have somebody do' vs 'have somebody doing': yalın fiil tek/tamamlanmış işi anlatır; -ing biçimi süregelen ya da rahatsız edici bir durumu anlatır. I had him wait (beklettim) vs I won't have you shouting (bağırmana izin vermem).
The causative has a few special cases and idiomatic corners; a C1 student recognises them.
1) The passive 'be made to do': after make there is normally no 'to', BUT when the structure is made passive, 'to' comes back: They made him leave → He was made to leave. This is a trap that appears often in exams.
2) 'help' both with and without 'to': the verb help sits close to the causative and, exceptionally, accepts both forms: She helped me (to) move. Both are correct; the form without 'to' is more common in present-day English.
3) 'have somebody do' vs 'have somebody doing': the bare verb describes a single/completed task; the -ing form describes an ongoing or annoying situation. I had him wait (I made him wait) vs I won't have you shouting (I won't allow you to shout).
Günlük İngilizcede causative konuşmanın doğal dokusudur — özellikle 'get something done' konuşma dilinde 'have'den daha sık duyulur. İşte tipik bir diyalog.
In everyday English the causative is a natural part of the fabric of speech — especially 'get something done', which is heard more often than 'have' in spoken language. Here is a typical dialogue.
Akademik ve resmi yazıda causative, have ağırlıklı ve daha nötr kullanılır; 'get' konuşma diline kaçtığı için resmi metinlerde seyrektir. Ayrıca edilgen 'be made to' yapısı resmi/hukuki metinlerde sıkça görülür. Causative, sorumluluğu ya da süreci gizlemeden bir işin dışarıya yaptırıldığını belirtmeye yarar — özellikle araştırma, yönetim ve prosedür anlatımında.
- 'has junior analysts prepare' = have + kişi + yalın fiil (düzenleme).
- 'gets a senior colleague to review' = get + kişi + to (ikna/ayarlama).
- 'have the numbers audited' = Kalıp 1: nesne + V3 (denetlettirme).
- 'make companies disclose' = make + kişi + yalın (zorlama).
- 'firms are made to publish' = edilgen make; 'to' geri geldi.
- Resmi metinde 'have' ve edilgen make baskın; 'get' yalnızca bir kez, hafif çaba tonuyla.
In academic and formal writing the causative is used more with have and more neutrally; because 'get' leans towards spoken language, it is rare in formal texts. The passive 'be made to' structure is also frequently seen in formal/legal texts. The causative serves to indicate that a task was outsourced without hiding responsibility or the process — especially in describing research, administration and procedures.
- 'has junior analysts prepare' = have + person + bare verb (arranging).
- 'gets a senior colleague to review' = get + person + to (persuasion/arranging).
- 'have the numbers audited' = Pattern 1: object + V3 (having audited).
- 'make companies disclose' = make + person + bare (forcing).
- 'firms are made to publish' = passive make; 'to' came back.
- In a formal text 'have' and passive make dominate; 'get' appears only once, with a light effort tone.
- 'got a surveyor to inspect' = get + kişi + to (ayarlama/ikna).
- 'have the wiring replaced' / 'get the damp treated' = Kalıp 1: nesne + V3.
- 'made her promise' = make + kişi + yalın (to yok).
- 'didn't let the builders cut corners' = let + kişi + yalın; izin vermeme.
- 'made them do it again' = make + kişi + yalın (zorlama, tekrar yaptırma).
- 'got her brother to help' = get + kişi + to; 'help her lay' = help + yalın istisnası.
- 'have it done by a professional' = Kalıp 1 + by ile fail belirtme.
- 'they get her to come' / 'never lets them sign' = Kalıp 2 çeşitleri; ton değişimi.
- 'got a surveyor to inspect' = get + person + to (arranging/persuasion).
- 'have the wiring replaced' / 'get the damp treated' = Pattern 1: object + V3.
- 'made her promise' = make + person + bare (no 'to').
- 'didn't let the builders cut corners' = let + person + bare; withholding permission.
- 'made them do it again' = make + person + bare (forcing, having redone).
- 'got her brother to help' = get + person + to; 'help her lay' = help + bare exception.
- 'have it done by a professional' = Pattern 1 + naming the doer with by.
- 'they get her to come' / 'never lets them sign' = variants of Pattern 2; a shift in tone.

Aşağıdaki sorular kural ezberini değil, anlamı yoklar. Cümlenin ne demek istediğini düşün.
- "I had my car washed." — Arabayı kim yıkadı, ben mi başkası mı?Başkası (örneğin oto yıkamacı). Ben yaptırdım; sonuç odaklı causative.
- "I washed my car." — Fark ne?Bu sefer arabayı bizzat ben yıkadım. Causative değil, düz etken.
- "She had her bag stolen." — Bu iyi bir olay mı, kötü mü? Yaptırdı mı?Kötü bir olay; istem dışı başına geldi. 'Çantasını çaldırmak istedi' değil, 'çantası çalındı' demektir.
- "I made him apologise" ile "I got him to apologise" arasındaki ton farkı ne?make = zorladım (isteğine bakmadım). get...to = ikna ettim/uğraştım, sonunda gönüllü yaptı.
- "My boss let me leave early." — Patron bir iş mi yaptırdı?Hayır; izin verdi. let = izin/engellememe, zorlama yok.
- "I had the plumber fix it" ile "I had it fixed" arasında ne değişir?İlki tesisatçıyı sahneye koyar (kim yaptı önemli); ikincisi sadece sonuca bakar (kim yaptığı önemsiz).
The questions below test not rote rules but meaning. Think about what the sentence is trying to say.
- "I had my car washed." — Who washed the car, me or someone else?Someone else (e.g. a car wash). I had it done; a result-focused causative.
- "I washed my car." — What's the difference? This time I washed the car myself. Not a causative, but a plain active.
- "She had her bag stolen." — Is this a good event or a bad one? Did she have it done?A bad event; it happened to her involuntarily. It doesn't mean 'she wanted her bag stolen' but 'her bag was stolen'.
- What is the difference in tone between "I made him apologise" and "I got him to apologise"?make = I forced him (regardless of his wishes). get...to = I persuaded him / made an effort, and in the end he did it willingly.
- "My boss let me leave early." — Did the boss have a task done? No; he gave permission. let = permission/not preventing, no forcing.
- What changes between "I had the plumber fix it" and "I had it fixed"?The first puts the plumber on stage (who did it matters); the second just looks at the result (who did it doesn't matter).

Görev: Yeni bir eve ya da iş yerine taşındığını hayal et. Taşınmadan önce yaptırman gereken 6-8 işi anlatan kısa bir paragraf (100-140 kelime) yaz. En az üç Kalıp 1 (have/get + nesne + V3) ve en az iki Kalıp 2 (make/get/let + kişi + fiil) cümlesi kullan.
- Rehber sorular: Hangi tamir/temizlik işlerini profesyonele yaptıracaksın? (have/get something done)
- Kime, neyi yaptırdın/ricalar ettin? (get somebody to do)
- Birini bir şeye zorladın mı ya da birine izin verdin mi? (make / let somebody do)
- İstem dışı ters giden bir şey oldu mu? (had something broken/delayed)
Task: Imagine you are moving into a new home or workplace. Write a short paragraph (100-140 words) describing 6-8 tasks you need to have done before moving in. Use at least three Pattern 1 sentences (have/get + object + V3) and at least two Pattern 2 sentences (make/get/let + person + verb).
- Guiding questions: Which repair/cleaning jobs will you have a professional do? (have/get something done)
- Who did you have do what, or make requests to? (get somebody to do)
- Did you force someone to do something or give someone permission? (make / let somebody do)
- Did something go wrong involuntarily? (had something broken/delayed)
İki kalıbı aynı derste değil, ard arda iki oturumda ver. B1'de sadece Kalıp 1'i (have/get something done) günlük hizmetlerle sağlamlaştır; öğrenci bu kalıbı otomatikleştirmeden Kalıp 2'ye (make/get/let somebody do) geçme. Aksi hâlde 'V3 mü yalın mı to mu?' kararsızlığı her ikisini de bozar.
Kavram kontrol soruları (CCQ): 'I had my car repaired' için sor: Did I repair the car myself? (No) Did someone repair it for me? (Yes) Is the car repaired now? (Yes). 'She had her bike stolen' için: Did she want this? (No) Is it a good or bad thing? (Bad). Bu sorular istem dışı kullanımı netleştirir.
Etkinlik önerisi: "Millionaire's day" — öğrenciler zengin biri gibi bir günlerini anlatır: "I had my breakfast brought to bed, I got the driver to take me to town..." Eğlenceli ve kalıbı bol tekrar ettirir. Alternatif: "Home makeover" rol oyunu — biri ev sahibi, diğeri usta; ne yaptıracağını pazarlık ederler.
Give the two patterns in two consecutive sessions, not in the same lesson. At B1, consolidate only Pattern 1 (have/get something done) with everyday services; do not move to Pattern 2 (make/get/let somebody do) until the student has automated this pattern. Otherwise the 'V3 or bare or to?' indecision breaks both of them.
Concept-check questions (CCQ): for 'I had my car repaired' ask: Did I repair the car myself? (No) Did someone repair it for me? (Yes) Is the car repaired now? (Yes). For 'She had her bike stolen': Did she want this? (No) Is it a good or bad thing? (Bad). These questions clarify the involuntary use.
Activity suggestion: "Millionaire's day" — students describe a day of theirs as if they were rich: "I had my breakfast brought to bed, I got the driver to take me to town..." It's fun and makes them repeat the pattern a lot. Alternative: a "Home makeover" role-play — one is the homeowner, the other the builder; they negotiate what to have done.
- Causative = bir işi başkasına yaptırmak/ettirmek; Türkçe -tir/-dir ekinin karşılığı.
- Kalıp 1 (nesne odak): have/get + nesne + V3 → I had my car repaired. İşin sonucu önemli.
- Kalıp 2 (kişi odak): make/have/let + kişi + yalın fiil; get + kişi + to + fiil.
- Fiil biçimi hafızası: make/have/let = to YOK; get = to VAR; Kalıp 1 = hep V3.
- Anlam merdiveni: let < get sb to < have sb < make sb (izinden zorlamaya).
- have (düzenleme/nötr) vs get (çaba/ikna, gündelik) ince farkı vardır.
- Aynı Kalıp 1, istem dışı kötü olayları da anlatır: I had my wallet stolen.
- Edilgen istisnası: be made TO do — etkende olmayan 'to' edilgende geri gelir.
- Zaman/özne yardımcı fiilde işlenir; nesne ile V3 sırası (have + NESNE + V3) bozulmamalı.
- Edilgen ile karıştırma: causative'de gizli bir 'yaptıran özne' hep vardır.
- Causative = having/getting someone else to do a task; the equivalent of the Turkish -tir/-dir suffix.
- Pattern 1 (object focus): have/get + object + V3 → I had my car repaired. The result of the task matters.
- Pattern 2 (person focus): make/have/let + person + bare verb; get + person + to + verb.
- Verb-form memory aid: make/have/let = NO 'to'; get = 'to' YES; Pattern 1 = always V3.
- Meaning ladder: let < get sb to < have sb < make sb (from permission to forcing).
- There is a fine difference between have (arranging/neutral) and get (effort/persuasion, casual).
- The same Pattern 1 also describes involuntary bad events: I had my wallet stolen.
- The passive exception: be made TO do — the 'to' absent in the active comes back in the passive.
- Tense/subject are handled on the helping verb; the object-then-V3 order (have + OBJECT + V3) must not be broken.
- Don't confuse it with the passive: in the causative there is always a hidden 'subject who has it done'.
