Drop the "if", invert the auxiliary, and your conditionals suddenly sound formal, literary and unmistakably C1.
By now you can build every conditional accurately with if. The advanced move is to remove if altogether and invert the subject and auxiliary instead — exactly as you do in a question. If I had known becomes Had I known; If you should need help becomes Should you need help; If it were not for you becomes Were it not for you. The meaning is unchanged, but the register lifts: inversion is the grammar of formal writing, business correspondence, official notices and elegant narrative.
Only three auxiliaries invert this way: had (third conditional), were (second conditional / hypothetical future), and should (open, tentative future). The single rule that separates the skilled from the sloppy: once you invert, you can never keep "if", and the negative not stays after the subject — Had I not seen, never Had not I seen.
The third conditional talks about an unreal past — something that did not happen and its imagined result. Normally: If + past perfect, ... would have + V3. To invert, drop if and move had in front of the subject. Nothing else changes; the result clause stays the same. This is the most common conditional inversion, and the most common place to slip.

The second conditional imagines an unreal or hypothetical present or future: If + past simple, ... would. To invert, drop if and move were forward. For a future hypothesis we often add to + base verb: Were I to accept = If I were to accept. Note that only were inverts — a past-simple verb like knew or lived cannot: you cannot say Knew I the answer.

For a real but uncertain future possibility — the kind you might introduce with if in a first conditional — formal English inverts with should. Should you need help = If you should need help = a slightly more tentative If you need help. This is the classic register of instructions, offers and business letters: it sounds polished and considerate.

Two set phrases are worth learning as whole units, because C1 writers use them constantly to say "without X, the result would have been different". Use Had it not been for for an unreal past (pairs with would have), and Were it not for for a present or general state (pairs with would). They are the formal equivalents of if it hadn't been for and if it weren't for.

Conditional inversion is a register signal: it tells the reader you are writing carefully and formally. Deploy it in academic essays, formal letters, official announcements, legal or business prose, and polished narrative. In casual speech it can sound stiff or theatrical — there, plain if is friendlier.

Trained as a materials engineer, she had a habit, considered eccentric by some of her elders, of trusting physical evidence over institutional reputation. Where others read the dam's long record of safety as proof that nothing could ever go wrong, she regarded that very record as a reason to look more closely, not less. Younger inspectors are now taught to distrust the reassuring weight of precedent, and to remember that a structure's past reliability guarantees nothing whatsoever about its present condition. At C1 you gain a sharper, more formal register with connectors such as moreover, consequently, notwithstanding, whereas and nonetheless. Used precisely — and sparingly — alongside inverted conditionals, they signal a writer in full command of tone.

A strong C1 counterfactual is not a flat list of events. It sets up a real situation, imagines the decisive turning point, spells out the alternative that was averted, and reflects on what it means. The skeleton stays the same — you change the content, not the shape:
