Text 1 · The Limits of Attention

It has become fashionable to praise multitasking as a hallmark of the modern professional, yet a growing body of research suggests that the human brain is remarkably ill-suited to it. What we casually call multitasking is, in most cases, rapid task-switching: the mind disengages from one activity and reattaches itself to another, incurring a small but measurable cost each time. These switching costs, though negligible in isolation, accumulate over a working day into a significant drain on both speed and accuracy.

Researchers have found that individuals who consider themselves proficient multitaskers tend, paradoxically, to perform worst on tests of divided attention. Confidence, it appears, is a poor guide to competence. Far from training the brain to handle several streams of information at once, habitual multitasking may erode the very capacity for sustained concentration on which demanding work depends.

The implications reach well beyond the office. If attention is indeed a finite resource, then the constant interruptions of digital life may be reshaping not merely how we work, but how deeply we are able to think at all.

For much of the twentieth century, urban planning treated nature as an ornament — something to be added, in the form of tidy parks, once the essential business of building had been completed. That assumption is now being overturned. A new discipline, often labelled green infrastructure, argues that vegetation is not decorative but functional, performing tasks that would otherwise fall to expensive engineering.

Trees, for instance, are increasingly valued for their ability to absorb rainwater that would otherwise overwhelm urban drains. Networks of planting can lower city temperatures during heatwaves, reducing the demand for energy-hungry air conditioning. Wetlands, once drained without a second thought, are being restored precisely because they filter pollutants and cushion the impact of floods.

Critics caution that such schemes are sometimes promoted more for their public image than for measurable benefit, and that maintenance is frequently underfunded once the initial enthusiasm has faded. Yet the underlying shift is difficult to dispute. Where nature was formerly regarded as the opposite of the city, it is now being recognised as one of its most valuable assets.
