For much of the twentieth century, it was taken for granted that greater choice was, without exception, a good thing. The more options consumers were offered, the reasoning went, the more likely they were to find something that suited them precisely. In recent decades, however, this assumption has been called into question by a growing body of psychological research.
In one now-famous experiment, shoppers in a supermarket were presented with a display of jams. On some days, only six varieties were offered; on others, twenty-four. Curiously, although the larger display attracted more interest, it was the smaller one that led to far more actual purchases. Faced with two dozen options, many customers simply walked away empty-handed, apparently overwhelmed.
Psychologists have since argued that an excess of choice can be paradoxically paralysing. When the alternatives are few, we compare them with relative ease. When they multiply, the effort of weighing each against the others becomes exhausting, and the fear of making the wrong decision grows. Some people respond by postponing the decision indefinitely; others choose, but are left dissatisfied, haunted by the options they rejected.
This is not to say that choice is undesirable. Few would wish to return to an age of rigid uniformity, and a reasonable range of options remains essential to any notion of freedom. The point, rather, is that the relationship between choice and satisfaction is not a straight line. Beyond a certain threshold, additional options may add little of value while imposing a real psychological cost.
For businesses, the implications are significant. Rather than overwhelming customers with endless variety, some companies have found that carefully curating a smaller selection can actually increase sales and loyalty. What consumers appear to want is not limitless choice, but choice that has already been made manageable on their behalf.

Not so long ago, the arrival of a handwritten letter was an event. The envelope, the familiar handwriting, the particular weight of the paper — all of these carried meaning before a single word had been read. Today, such letters have become a rarity, replaced almost entirely by the instant convenience of the email and the text message.
Something, many argue, has been lost in this transition. A letter demanded time and thought. Because it could not be recalled once posted, the writer chose each sentence with care. A message typed in seconds, by contrast, is easily sent and just as easily forgotten. The very effort that made letters slow was precisely what made them valuable.
There is also the question of permanence. Emails vanish into overflowing inboxes or disappear when an account is closed. A letter, however, can be kept in a drawer for decades, its ink fading but its words intact. Historians have long depended on such correspondence to understand the past; future historians may find our own era strangely silent.
None of this means that older forms of communication were superior in every respect. Letters were slow, unreliable, and sometimes never arrived at all. The telephone and the email have connected people across distances that would once have seemed impossible. Progress, as always, has brought genuine benefits alongside its quieter losses.
Perhaps the answer lies not in rejecting new technology but in remembering what the old methods taught us. To write slowly, to choose our words, to imagine the person who will read them — these habits need not vanish with the paper that once carried them.
Complete the sentences with ONE word from the text. (Cümleleri metinden BİR kelimeyle tamamla.)
Choose the correct answer. (Doğru cevabı seç.)
Suggested time: 35 minutes — Task 1: 13 min, Task 2: 22 min. (Önerilen süre: 35 dakika — Görev 1: 13 dk, Görev 2: 22 dk.) Öğretmenin değerlendirecek; örnek cevap yoktur.
Your city council has proposed turning the main square into a car-free zone, open only to pedestrians and cyclists. A local newspaper has asked readers for their views. Write an email to the newspaper giving your opinion. (Belediyen ana meydanı yayalara ve bisikletlilere açık, araç girişine kapalı bir bölgeye çevirmeyi önerdi. Yerel bir gazete okuyucularının görüşünü soruyor. Görüşünü belirten bir e-posta yaz.)
Some people believe that online learning will one day replace traditional universities completely. Others strongly disagree. Discuss the arguments for and against this view, and then give your own opinion.
Finish the exam to see your score. (Puanını görmek için sınavı bitir.)
"Sınavı Bitir" dediğinde Grammar (40), Use of English (10) ve Reading (20) bölümlerin otomatik puanlanır, tüm cevaplar kilitlenir ve yanlışların ünite bazında listelenir. Writing görevlerin öğretmenine gider; henüz göndermediysen yazdıkların otomatik gönderilir. Bu işlem geri alınamaz.
Cevaplamadığın sorular yanlış sayılır. Bitirmeden önce bölümleri kontrol et.
