Command of Evidence is one of the highest-volume skills per module in the Information & Ideas area of the Digital SAT Reading & Writing section. It has two faces: Textual Evidence (choosing the statement that most strongly supports or weakens a hypothesis, argument, or claim) and Quantitative Evidence (reading the correct data from a table/graph and logically completing the claim). In both types, the real test is eliminating the "looks right but doesn't connect to the claim" options. In this guide you will learn, step by step, to build the claim-evidence bridge, to catch the opposing hypothesis distractor, and to read graphs by reflex. Then reinforce with the SAT Reading & Writing general strategy.
| Kavram | Ne demek | Refleks |
|---|---|---|
| Out of scope | Doğru ama iddiayla ilgisiz | "Doğru cümle" ≠ "kanıt" |
| Data-to-claim bridge | Grafik değerinin iddiaya bağlanması | Şık, hem grafiğe hem iddiaya uymalı |
| Concept | What it means | Reflex |
|---|---|---|
| Claim / hypothesis | The claim to be supported or weakened | First mark the claim's subject and direction |
| Support | Evidence in the direction that confirms the claim | The choice seeking same subject + same direction |
| Weaken / undermine | Evidence that refutes the claim | The choice in the opposite direction but staying on the same subject |
| Opposing hypothesis | A rival view rejected in the text | Often a distractor; don't pick the one supporting it |
| Out of scope | True but unrelated to the claim | "A true sentence" ≠ "evidence" |
| Data-to-claim bridge | Connecting the graph value to the claim | The choice must fit both the graph and the claim |
Digital SAT R&W bölümü iki modüldür ve her modülde yaklaşık 27 soru / 32 dakika vardır. Information & Ideas alanı toplamın yaklaşık %26'sını oluşturur; Command of Evidence bu alanın en kalabalık parçasıdır. Pratikte her modülde 2-4 Textual ve 1-2 Quantitative kanıt sorusu görürsün.
The Digital SAT R&W section has two modules, and each module has about 27 questions / 32 minutes. The Information & Ideas area makes up roughly 26% of the total; Command of Evidence is the most populous part of this area. In practice, in each module you see 2-4 Textual and 1-2 Quantitative evidence questions.
Yönergedeki fiil, ne aradığını belirler. En sık gördüğün kalıplar:
| Yönerge kalıbı | Ne istiyor | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Which finding, if true, would most directly support the researcher's hypothesis? | Hipotezi doğrular yeni bulgu | Textual |
| Which finding, if true, would most seriously weaken / undermine / call into question the claim? | İddiayı çürüten bulgu | Textual |
| Which quotation from the text most effectively illustrates the claim? | Edebi metinde iddiayı örnekleyen alıntı | Textual |
| Which choice most effectively uses data from the graph/table to complete the statement? | Grafik verisiyle cümleyi tamamla | Quantitative |
| Which choice best describes data that would support the team's conclusion? | Sonucu destekleyecek varsayımsal veri | Quantitative |
Quantitative tipte iki alt-varyant vardır: (1) grafiği okuyup doğru değeri seçme, (2) grafiğe uyan ama iddiayı da doğru yönde tamamlayan değeri seçme. İkincisi zorudur çünkü grafiğe teknik olarak uyan birden fazla şık olabilir.
The verb in the prompt determines what you're looking for. The patterns you see most often:
| Prompt pattern | What it wants | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Which finding, if true, would most directly support the researcher's hypothesis? | A new finding that confirms the hypothesis | Textual |
| Which finding, if true, would most seriously weaken / undermine / call into question the claim? | A finding that refutes the claim | Textual |
| Which quotation from the text most effectively illustrates the claim? | A quotation in a literary text that illustrates the claim | Textual |
| Which choice most effectively uses data from the graph/table to complete the statement? | Complete the sentence with graph data | Quantitative |
| Which choice best describes data that would support the team's conclusion? | Hypothetical data that would support the conclusion | Quantitative |
In the Quantitative type there are two sub-variants: (1) reading the graph and picking the correct value, (2) picking the value that fits the graph but also completes the claim in the right direction. The second is harder because more than one choice may technically fit the graph.
Her iki tipte de aynı iskeleti kullan. Şıklara bakmadan önce iddiayı sabitle.
Grafik sorularında gözü önce başlık + eksen etiketleri + birim (%, thousands, per capita) üzerinde gezdir. Öğrenciler değere atlayıp birimi kaçırır; SAT tam da buraya tuzak kurar.
Use the same skeleton for both types. Fix the claim before looking at the choices.
On graph questions, first run your eye over the title + axis labels + unit (%, thousands, per capita). Students jump to the value and miss the unit; the SAT sets its trap right here.
| Kural | Neden |
|---|---|
| Doğru cümle ≠ kanıt | Bir şık metinle tutarlı ama iddiayla ilgisiz olabilir (out of scope). Kanıt, iddianın tam öznesine dokunmalı. |
| Yön mutlaka eşleşmeli | Support'ta aynı yön, weaken'da ters yön. Yönü ters olan şık en tehlikeli çeldiricidir. |
| Karşıt hipotezi tanı | Metin çoğu zaman "bazıları X der, ama araştırmacı Y savunur" kurar. X'i destekleyen şık tuzaktır. |
| Aşırı genelleme (overreach) elenir | "proves", "always", "the only cause" gibi mutlak dil, tek bir bulgunun taşıyamayacağı iddialardır. |
| Karşılaştırma iddiası, karşılaştırma verisi ister | İddia "A, B'den fazla" diyorsa; sadece A'yı veren şık yetmez, ikisini kıyaslayan gerekir. |
| Rule | Why |
|---|---|
| A true sentence ≠ evidence | A choice can be consistent with the text but unrelated to the claim (out of scope). Evidence must touch the claim's exact subject. |
| The direction must match | Same direction on support, opposite direction on weaken. A choice with the wrong direction is the most dangerous distractor. |
| Fits the graph = not automatically correct | In Quantitative, several choices may read the graph correctly; only one completes the claim. |
| Recognize the opposing hypothesis | The text often sets up "some say X, but the researcher argues Y." The choice supporting X is a trap. |
| Overreach is eliminated | Absolute language like "proves", "always", "the only cause" makes claims a single finding cannot carry. |
| A comparison claim needs comparison data | If the claim says "A more than B," a choice giving only A is not enough; you need one comparing the two. |
The SAT's evidence distractors fall into four patterns. Naming them builds reflexes on test day.
When you eliminate a distractor, name it: "this is a direction error", "this is out of scope". Naming the trap seriously lowers the chance of falling for it a second time.
An extra pattern in Quantitative: right value, wrong comparison. The choice takes a number from the graph correctly but says "less than" instead of "greater than," or compares the wrong two columns.
Question: Which finding, if true, would most seriously weaken the ecologists' hypothesis?
A) In a neighboring lake with no non-native predatory fish, the native fish population declined by a similar amount over the same period.
A) Yabancı yırtıcının bulunmadığı komşu bir gölde, yerli balık nüfusu aynı dönemde benzer oranda düştü.
B) The non-native predatory fish consumes the same prey species that the native fish depend on.
B) Yabancı yırtıcı, yerli balığın bağımlı olduğu aynı avı tüketiyor.
C) The non-native predatory fish was first observed in the lake shortly before the native population began to decline.
C) Yabancı yırtıcı, yerli nüfus düşmeye başlamadan hemen önce gölde ilk kez görüldü.
D) The native fish population had been stable for several decades before the recent decline.
D) Yerli balık nüfusu, son düşüşten önce onlarca yıl boyunca istikrarlıydı.
Neden diğerleri yanlış:

|---|---|
| Low (10%) | 38 |
| Moderate (25%) | 71 |
| High (40%) | 82 |
| Very high (55%) | 59 |

A) Germination rose from 38% at low moisture to 82% at high moisture but fell to 59% at very high moisture.
A) Çimlenme düşük nemde %38'den yüksek nemde %82'ye çıktı, ancak çok yüksek nemde %59'a düştü.
B) Germination was highest at high moisture, at 82%.
C) Germination increased steadily as soil moisture increased from low to very high.
C) Çimlenme, nem düşükten çok yükseğe çıktıkça istikrarlı biçimde arttı.
D) Germination was lower at moderate moisture (71%) than at low moisture (38%).

Why the others are wrong:
Command of Evidence soruları R&W'de orta uzunlukta ama tuzak yoğundur. Hedef süre: Textual için 45-70 sn, Quantitative için 60-90 sn (grafik okuma payı).
Command of Evidence questions are medium-length in R&W but trap-dense. Target time: 45-70 sec for Textual, 60-90 sec for Quantitative (graph-reading margin).
| increased steadily | Her adımda ↑ | Tek bir düşüş bile varsa yanlış |
| rose, then declined | Tek tepe (unimodal) | Zirveden sonra gerçekten düşüyor mu? |
| more/greater than | İki hücre kıyası | Doğru iki hücre mi seçilmiş? |
Ayrıca yön hatası: şık doğru iki hücreyi alır ama "greater than" yerine "less than" der; değerler doğru, ilişki ters.
Edebi ya da argüman metinlerinde soru "Which quotation from the text most effectively illustrates/supports the claim?" biçiminde gelir.
In the 700+ band, most evidence questions are quantitative, and the difficulty comes not from reading the graph but from connecting the right row/column to the claim. This section gathers four advanced reflexes that give speed and accuracy together on table-graph questions.
On a graph question, set your eye not on the value but on the claim's subject. Which two variables does the claim talk about? Which row and column do these variables correspond to in the table? Before reading the choices, answer the question "to prove this claim, what exactly do I need to look at in the table?" If the claim contains a comparison (A more than B), two cells; if it contains a trend (rises as it increases), a direction along a row/column is needed. The correct choice is the only one that uses the cells the claim requires; the rest is "correctly read but irrelevant" data.
Translate the qualitative language in the choices directly to the table. "Highest / greatest" = the largest value in the column; "lowest / least" = the smallest; "increased steadily / consistently" = the same direction at every step; "rose then fell" = a single peak (unimodal). The sneakiest word here is steadily/consistently: if the direction changes at even a single intermediate step, this phrase is wrong, even if the values rise overall. When reading the choice, underline these words and verify step by step in the table; "mostly increasing" and "steadily increasing" are different claims for the SAT.
| Phrase in the choice | Table equivalent | Check |
|---|---|---|
| highest / greatest | The column's peak value | Is there a larger one in another row? |
| increased steadily | ↑ at every step | Wrong if there is even a single drop |
| rose, then declined | Single peak (unimodal) | Does it really fall after the peak? |
| more/greater than | Comparison of two cells | Are the correct two cells chosen? |
The strongest quantitative distractor takes a real value from the table but attaches it to the wrong category, wrong year, or wrong group. Because the number looks familiar, it feels right; the error is in the label. Two defenses: (1) when reading each number, run your finger over the row and column label, fixing the number's identity by both axes; (2) watch the unit — "%", "in thousands", "per capita" are different magnitudes, and if the choice talks as if it's an absolute number the trap is here. Also the direction error: the choice takes the correct two cells but says "less than" instead of "greater than"; the values are right, the relationship reversed.
In literary or argument texts, the question comes as "Which quotation from the text most effectively illustrates/supports the claim?" Here the correct quotation is the sentence that concretizes the exact fact in the claim — not descriptive, atmospheric, or background sentences. If the claim says a contradiction/hypocrisy (said ≠ done), the correct quotation must contain both what is said and the behavior contradicting it; a quotation describing emotion alone is not enough. If the claim asserts a character trait, the correct quotation shows that trait through action, not just naming it. Distractors are usually quotations that are on-topic but don't touch the claim's subject (out of scope) or imply the opposite of the claim (direction error).
Her yanlışını dört kalıptan biriyle etiketlemek, iki hafta içinde bu tipteki net kaybını neredeyse sıfırlar — çünkü SAT aynı dört tuzağı döndürür durur.
Command of Evidence is the skill of not "true information" but "the information that connects most to the claim". Automate two reflexes:
Memorize the four distractor patterns: direction error, opposing hypothesis, out of scope, half-right. If a choice feels "very relevant and true," be suspicious for exactly that reason.
Labeling each mistake with one of the four patterns nearly zeroes out your net loss on this type within two weeks — because the SAT keeps rotating the same four traps.
