This is the domain with the most questions on the Digital SAT Math; it measures reasoning with real data, not memorization.
Problem-Solving & Data Analysis (PSDA) is one of the four content areas of the Digital SAT Math and is among the headings that carry the highest share of questions. Here what is tested is not pure algebra but, with real-world data, proportional reasoning, percentages, unit analysis, probability and statistics reading. Most questions come with a graph, table, or short context passage; what you are asked for is not so much calculation as setting up the right relationship.

The Digital SAT Math consists of two modules and contains 44 questions in total. These questions split across four content areas: Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving & Data Analysis and Geometry & Trigonometry. PSDA alone holds roughly 15% (about 5-7 questions), and almost all of it comes as contextual (word problems); that is, every question is wrapped in a story, table, or graph.
PSDA soruları birkaç tanıdık kalıbın etrafında döner. Kalıbı tanımak, çözümün yarısıdır.
| Tip | Örnek yönerge | Anahtar refleks |
|---|---|---|
| Oran / orantı / hız | "...at this rate, how many..." | Birimleri eşitle, cross-multiply |
| Yüzde | "...what is the percent increase..." | Payda = orijinal değer |
| Karışım / ağırlıklı ort. | "...must be added to produce..." | Miktar denklemi kur (madde korunumu) |
| İki yönlü tablo & olasılık | "...selected at random...given that..." | "given" varsa payda daralır |
| Merkezi eğilim | "...mean/median/mode..." | toplam = ort · n |
| Yayılım (spread/std) | "...greater standard deviation..." | Hesaplama yok, görsel yorum |
| Scatterplot / best fit | "...line of best fit predicts..." | Eğim = birim değişim |
| Örnekleme & MoE | "...which conclusion is valid..." | Rastgelelik + genellenebilirlik |
PSDA questions revolve around a few familiar patterns. Recognizing the pattern is half the solution.
| Type | Example prompt | Key reflex |
|---|---|---|
| Ratio / proportion / rate | "...at this rate, how many..." | Match the units, cross-multiply |
| Percentage | "...what is the percent increase..." | Denominator = original value |
| Mixture / weighted avg. | "...must be added to produce..." | Set up a quantity equation (conservation of substance) |
| Two-way table & probability | "...selected at random...given that..." | if there is "given," the denominator narrows |
| Central tendency | "...mean/median/mode..." | sum = mean · n |
| Spread (spread/std) | "...greater standard deviation..." | No calculation, visual interpretation |
| Scatterplot / best fit | "...line of best fit predicts..." | Slope = change per unit |
| Sampling & MoE | "...which conclusion is valid..." | Randomness + generalizability |
Her PSDA sorusunda işe yarayan bir refleks zinciri:
A reflex chain that works on every PSDA question:
Ezberden çok anlamayla tutulması gereken çekirdek kurallar:
| Konu | Kural | Tuzak uyarısı |
|---|---|---|
| Yüzde değişimi | (yeni − eski)/eski · 100 | Yeni değeri payda yapma |
| Ardışık yüzde | Çarpanları çarp | +%25 sonra −%20 = ×1,00 (net 0) |
| Karışım | madde1 + madde2 = maddetoplam | Konsantrasyonları ortalama alma |
| Ağırlıklı ort. | Grupları boyutuyla tart | İki ortalamanın düz ortalaması yanlış |
| Koşullu olasılık | P(A|B)=P(A∩B)/P(B) | Payda = koşul grubu |
| Mean vs median | Sağ-çarpık dağılımda mean > median | Uç değer (outlier) mean'i çeker |
| Standart sapma | Ortalamaya yakınlık = küçük std | SAT hesap istemez, yorum ister |
| Margin of error | Aralık = tahmin ± MoE | Örnek büyürse MoE küçülür |
Core rules to hold by understanding rather than memorization:
| Topic | Rule | Trap warning |
|---|---|---|
| Percent change | (new − old)/old · 100 | Don't make the new value the denominator |
| Successive percentages | Multiply the multipliers | +25% then −20% = ×1,00 (net 0) |
| Mixture | substance1 + substance2 = substancetotal | Don't average the concentrations |
| Weighted avg. | Weight the groups by their size | The plain average of two averages is wrong |
| Conditional probability | P(A|B)=P(A∩B)/P(B) | Denominator = the condition group |
| Mean vs median | In a right-skewed distribution, mean > median | An extreme value (outlier) pulls the mean |
| Standard deviation | Closeness to the mean = small std | The SAT doesn't ask for calculation, it asks for interpretation |
| Margin of error | Interval = estimate ± MoE | If the sample grows, MoE shrinks |
SAT'in yanlış şıkları rastgele değildir; her biri belirli bir düşünce hatasını ödüllendirir. Tanırsan tuzağa düşmezsin.
PSDA'nın en pahalı hatası, yüzde değişimini yanlış tabana bölmektir: artışı orijinal değere değil yeni değere oranlamak. "Neyin yüzdesi?" sorusunu her yüzde işleminde açıkça sor.
The SAT's wrong answers are not random; each one rewards a specific reasoning error. Recognise the pattern and you won't fall for the trap.
PSDA's most expensive mistake is dividing a percentage change by the wrong base: comparing the increase to the new value instead of the original. Ask "percentage of what?" explicitly on every percentage operation.
Çözüm: Karışım sorularında korunan şey saf asit miktarıdır. Eklenen miktarı x diyelim.
Sol taraf (eklenen asit toplamı): 0,15·40 + 0,30·x = 6 + 0,30x
Sağ taraf (karışımdaki asit): 0,25·(40 + x) = 10 + 0,25x
Eşitle: 6 + 0,30x = 10 + 0,25x ⇒ 0,05x = 4 ⇒ x = 80. Doğru cevap C.
Solution: In mixture problems, the conserved quantity is the amount of pure acid. Let the added amount be x.
Left side (total acid added): 0,15·40 + 0,30·x = 6 + 0,30x
Right side (acid in the mixture): 0,25·(40 + x) = 10 + 0,25x
Set equal: 6 + 0,30x = 10 + 0,25x ⇒ 0,05x = 4 ⇒ x = 80. Correct answer C.
Çözüm: Genel ortalama, grupların boyutlarıyla ağırlıklandırılmış ortalamasıdır. Erkek sayısı b olsun.
Toplam puan / toplam kişi = 81,6:
(12·84 + b·78) / (12 + b) = 81,6
1008 + 78b = 81,6·(12 + b) = 979,2 + 81,6b
1008 − 979,2 = 81,6b − 78b ⇒ 28,8 = 3,6b ⇒ b = 8. Doğru cevap B.
Solution: The overall average is the average weighted by the sizes of the groups. Let the number of boys be b.
Total score / total people = 81,6:
(12·84 + b·78) / (12 + b) = 81,6
1008 + 78b = 81,6·(12 + b) = 979,2 + 81,6b
1008 − 979,2 = 81,6b − 78b ⇒ 28,8 = 3,6b ⇒ b = 8. Correct answer B.
Most of the point loss in this domain is not calculation but a setup mistake.
Her Math modülünde soru başına ortalama ~95 saniye vardır. PSDA soruları okuma yükü yüksek ama işlem yükü düşük olabilir; bu yüzden strateji okumada hızlı, kurulumda dikkatli olmaktır.
In each Math module there is an average of ~95 seconds per question. PSDA questions can have a high reading load but a low computation load; so the strategy is to be fast in reading, careful in setup.
Problem-Solving & Data Analysis, aritmetikten çok kavram ister: ortalamanın ne zaman yanıltıcı olduğunu, yüzdelerin nasıl zincirlendiğini ve olasılığın hangi payda üzerinden okunacağını bilmek. Dört teknik bu bandı açar.
Ortalama tüm değerleri, medyan sıralı ortadaki değeri verir. Aykırı değer (outlier) ortalamayı kendine çeker, medyanı neredeyse hiç etkilemez. "Which measure is more resistant to an outlier?" → medyan. Bir milyoner köye taşınınca ortalama gelir fırlar, medyan gelir aynı kalır.
Ardışık yüzde değişimleri çarpılır, toplanmaz. %20 artış sonra %20 azalış = ×1,20×0,80 = 0,96 → net %4 düşüş. "Percent of a percent" sorularında her adımı çarpan olarak yaz (%15 artış → ×1,15).
"Given that…" ifadesi paydayı daraltır: örneklem uzayı artık tüm grup değil, koşulu sağlayan satır/sütun toplamıdır.
"per", "each", "rate" kelimeleri birim oranı işaret eder.
Problem-Solving & Data Analysis asks for concepts more than arithmetic: knowing when the average is misleading, how percentages chain, and which denominator probability is read over. Four techniques open this band.
The mean gives all the values, the median the middle value in order. An outlier pulls the mean toward itself and barely affects the median. "Which measure is more resistant to an outlier?" → median. When a millionaire moves to the village, the mean income jumps, the median income stays the same.
Successive percentage changes multiply, they don't add. 20% increase then 20% decrease = ×1,20×0,80 = 0,96 → net 4% drop. In "Percent of a percent" questions, write each step as a multiplier (15% increase → ×1,15).
The "Given that…" phrase narrows the denominator: the sample space is no longer the whole group but the row/column total satisfying the condition. When reading the table, circle which total is the denominator.
In ratio problems, first find the value per single unit (miles/gallon, $/item), then scale. This is both faster and less error-prone than cross-multiplication. The words "per", "each", "rate" point to the unit rate.
Problem-Solving & Data Analysis is the domain with the most questions and the most context on the Digital SAT Math. Five core reflexes are enough: (1) think of a percentage as a multiplier, (2) set up conservation of substance in mixtures, (3) weight averages by size, (4) when you see "given," narrow the denominator, (5) interpret slope and MoE with their units.
Next step: First scan for missing sub-topics with the SAT Math topic map, and as the exam approaches apply the SAT Math last 2 weeks plan. Then solve a real-time practice test to test these reflexes under pressure.
