Work & Employment, IELTS Writing Task 2 ve Speaking Part 1-3'te en sık dönen temalardan biridir. Bu rehber; iş-yaşam dengesi, uzaktan çalışma, iş tatmini, işsizlik ve kariyer temalarında Band 7-9 collocation ve cümle kalıplarını verir. Genel yaklaşım için genel kelime stratejisi sayfasını, örnek cevaplar için model cevaplar sayfasını da incele.
Work & Employment is one of the most frequently recurring themes in IELTS Writing Task 2 and Speaking Parts 1-3. This guide provides Band 7-9 collocations and sentence patterns for the themes of work-life balance, remote working, job satisfaction, unemployment and careers. For the general approach, also check the general vocabulary strategy page, and for sample answers, the model answers page.
Hızlı bakış: Work temasında sınav; work-life balance (iş-yaşam dengesi), job satisfaction (iş tatmini), remote working (uzaktan çalışma), career prospects (kariyer beklentileri) ve unemployment (işsizlik) etrafında döner. Hedef: her paragrafta 2-3 tema-özel collocation'ı doğal biçimde kullanmak. Genel kelimeler (good, important, do a job) yerine tema-özel yüksek band kelimeleri seç.
Quick look: In the Work theme, the exam revolves around work-life balance, job satisfaction, remote working, career prospects and unemployment. The goal: to use 2-3 theme-specific collocations naturally in each paragraph. Instead of general words (good, important, do a job), choose theme-specific high-band words.
Work & Employment, IELTS'te hem Writing Task 2 hem Speaking için en verimli temalardan biridir; çünkü sorular birbirini tekrar eden birkaç tartışma ekseninde toplanır. Bu ekseni bilirsen, hangi kelime ailesini hazırlayacağını da bilirsin.
Writing Task 2'de en sık dönen açılar şunlardır:
Speaking'de ise soru tipi daha kişiseldir: Part 1 mevcut işin/okulun hakkında, Part 2 bir “describe a job you would like to have” tipi cue card, Part 3 ise soyut tartışma ("Gençler bugün neden sık iş değiştiriyor?").
Özet: Work teması dağınık değil, tahmin edilebilir. Beş tartışma eksenini kelime aileleriyle eşleştir; ezber değil, blok halinde üretim yap.
Work & Employment is one of the most productive themes in IELTS for both Writing Task 2 and Speaking, because the questions cluster around a few recurring lines of debate. Once you know these axes, you also know which word family to prepare.
The most frequently recurring angles in Writing Task 2 are:
In Speaking, the question type is more personal: Part 1 is about your current job/school, Part 2 is a “describe a job you would like to have” type cue card, and Part 3 is an abstract discussion ("Why do young people change jobs so often today?").
Summary: The Work theme is not scattered but predictable. Match the five lines of debate with word families; produce in blocks, not by rote.

Speaking'de yazılı kalıplar yerine deyim ve phrasal verb kullanmak Band 7+ için kritiktir (Lexical Resource kriteri açıkça "idiomatic language" ister). Aşağıdakiler Work temasında doğal ve güvenli kullanılabilir.
| Deyim / Phrasal verb | Türkçe anlamı |
|---|---|
| to climb the career ladder | kariyerde yükselmek |
| a dead-end job | ilerleme imkânı olmayan, çıkışsız iş |
| to be snowed under (with work) | işe boğulmuş olmak, iş altında ezilmek |
| to land a job | (iyi) bir iş kapmak / iş bulmak |
| to call it a day | işi/günü bitirmek, paydos etmek |
| to think outside the box | kalıpların dışında düşünmek |
| to go the extra mile | fazladan çaba göstermek |
| to be your own boss | kendi patronun olmak (serbest çalışmak) |
Örnek Speaking yanıtı (Part 3: "Do young people today change jobs often?"):
Absolutely. I think my generation is far less likely to stay in a dead-end job just for the sake of a steady income. A lot of my friends are willing to go the extra mile, but only if there are real career prospects. Personally, I'd rather be my own boss than climb the career ladder slowly in a company where I'm constantly snowed under. So yes, changing jobs frequently has almost become the norm.
In Speaking, using idioms and phrasal verbs instead of written patterns is critical for Band 7+ (the Lexical Resource criterion explicitly asks for "idiomatic language"). The following can be used naturally and safely in the Work theme.
| Idiom / Phrasal verb | Turkish meaning |
|---|---|
| to climb the career ladder | kariyerde yükselmek |
| a dead-end job | ilerleme imkânı olmayan, çıkışsız iş |
| to be snowed under (with work) | işe boğulmuş olmak, iş altında ezilmek |
| to land a job | (iyi) bir iş kapmak / iş bulmak |
| to call it a day | işi/günü bitirmek, paydos etmek |
| to think outside the box | kalıpların dışında düşünmek |
| to go the extra mile | fazladan çaba göstermek |
| to be your own boss | kendi patronun olmak (serbest çalışmak) |

Summary: In Speaking, use 1-2 idioms/phrasal verbs in the right place, not written academic patterns. Naturalness earns more points than rote memorisation.
Aynı fikir, kelime seçimine göre Band 5, 7 veya 9 duyulabilir. Aşağıdaki tablo tam olarak bunu gösterir: fikir sabit, sözcük dağarcığı yükseliyor.
| Band 5 (basit) | Band 7 (iyi) | Band 9 (üst düzey) |
|---|---|---|
| People want a good job with good money. | Many people look for a well-paid job with career prospects. | A significant proportion of the workforce seeks not merely a lucrative position but one offering genuine career progression. |
| Working from home is good because you have more free time. | Remote working improves work-life balance by cutting out the daily commute. | By eliminating time-consuming commutes, remote working enables employees to strike a far healthier work-life balance. |
| Many people lost their jobs because of machines. | Automation has made many low-skilled workers redundant. | The relentless advance of automation has rendered vast numbers of low-skilled workers redundant, driving up unemployment. |
| A job you like is better than a job with much money. | Job satisfaction often matters more than a high salary. | For a growing number of professionals, job satisfaction outweighs financial reward as the ultimate measure of success. |
Band'i yükselten üç kaldıraç:
Özet: Band farkı fikirden değil, kelime ve yapı seçiminden gelir. Genel kelimeyi tema-özel collocation'la, zayıf fiili güçlü fiille değiştir.
The same idea can sound like Band 5, 7 or 9 depending on word choice. The table below shows exactly this: the idea stays constant while the vocabulary rises.

Three levers that raise your band:
Summary: The band difference comes not from the idea but from word and structure choice. Replace general words with theme-specific collocations, and weak verbs with strong ones.

The mistakes Turkish students make most in the Work theme are not grammatical but mostly rooted in word choice and translation. The most critical ones:
A 5-step final check before writing:
Summary: Most mistakes stem from the work/job distinction and translation. Apply the 5-step check before writing; accuracy comes before show.
