We have brought together theme-specific collocations, model sentences and the mistakes Turkish students make most often, so you can handle the technology theme at Band 7+ level in Writing Task 2 and Speaking.
Technology is one of the most frequently recurring themes in IELTS; on this page we cover the sub-topics of the internet, artificial intelligence, screen time and data privacy through Band 7-9 collocations and model sentences. To reinforce your general vocabulary approach, see the general vocabulary strategy page, and for sample tests, the model answers page as well.
Quick reference: The collocations that will help you most on the technology theme: cutting-edge technology (son teknoloji), the digital divide (dijital uçurum), social media platforms (sosyal medya platformları), to automate routine tasks (rutin işleri otomatikleştirmek), data privacy (veri gizliliği) and screen addiction (ekran bağımlılığı). In an essay, rather than repeating a single word (e.g. technology), using 4-5 of these families in the right context directly raises your Lexical Resource score.
Örnek bir soru şu şekildedir: “Some argue that technology has made people less sociable. To what extent do you agree or disagree?” Genel bir band 6 cevabı “technology is good and bad” der; band 8 cevabı ise “while digital communication has eroded face-to-face interaction, it has simultaneously enabled people to sustain long-distance relationships” der — aradaki fark büyük ölçüde lexical resource, yani doğru collocation'dır.
Technology is one of the most frequently recurring theme families in IELTS Academic Writing Task 2 and Speaking Part 3. The exam wants to see you not as a technology expert but as someone who can discuss the effects of technology on society, communication and working life in a balanced way. The focus is therefore not on technical detail but on a clear argument centred on cause and effect, advantages vs disadvantages and personal opinion.
The typical sub-topics that recur under this theme are:
A sample question looks like this: “Some argue that technology has made people less sociable. To what extent do you agree or disagree?” In such an opinion essay, you are expected to take a clear position on the claim and support it with theme-specific vocabulary. A general band 6 answer says “technology is good and bad”; a band 8 answer, on the other hand, says “while digital communication has eroded face-to-face interaction, it has simultaneously enabled people to sustain long-distance relationships” — the difference is largely a matter of lexical resource, that is, the right collocation.

|---|---|
| to be glued to a screen | ekrana yapışıp kalmak |
| to scroll through (your feed) | (akışı) kaydırıp durmak |
| to switch off / unplug | (teknolojiden) fişi çekmek, kopmak |
| to keep up with (technology) | (teknolojiye) ayak uydurmak |
| to be tech-savvy | teknolojiye yatkın / bilgili olmak |
| at your fingertips | parmaklarının ucunda, anında erişilebilir |
| a double-edged sword | iki ucu keskin kılıç (hem faydalı hem zararlı) |
Örnek soru: “Do you think people spend too much time on their phones?”
Örnek Band 8 yanıt: “Honestly, yes — I think most of us are absolutely glued to our screens these days. I catch myself scrolling through my feed for hours without even noticing. Don't get me wrong, having so much information at your fingertips is incredible, but it's a bit of a double-edged sword. That's why I try to switch off in the evenings and, you know, actually talk to people face to face.”
Bu yanıt neden güçlü? Çünkü doğal bağlaçlar (honestly, don't get me wrong, you know), tema deyimleri (glued to our screens, at your fingertips, a double-edged sword) ve kişisel bir örnek bir arada.
The aim in Speaking is not to speak as if writing; it is to use natural, fluent yet rich language. The idioms and phrasal verbs below sound entirely natural on the technology theme:
| Expression | Meaning |
|---|---|
| to be glued to a screen | ekrana yapışıp kalmak |
| to scroll through (your feed) | (akışı) kaydırıp durmak |
| to switch off / unplug | (teknolojiden) fişi çekmek, kopmak |
| to keep up with (technology) | (teknolojiye) ayak uydurmak |
| to be tech-savvy | teknolojiye yatkın / bilgili olmak |
| at your fingertips | parmaklarının ucunda, anında erişilebilir |
| a double-edged sword | iki ucu keskin kılıç (hem faydalı hem zararlı) |
Sample question: “Do you think people spend too much time on their phones?”
Sample Band 8 answer: “Honestly, yes — I think most of us are absolutely glued to our screens these days. I catch myself scrolling through my feed for hours without even noticing. Don't get me wrong, having so much information at your fingertips is incredible, but it's a bit of a double-edged sword. That's why I try to switch off in the evenings and, you know, actually talk to people face to face.”
Why is this answer strong? Because natural connectors (honestly, don't get me wrong, you know), theme idioms (glued to our screens, at your fingertips, a double-edged sword) and a personal example come together. This shows both fluency (Fluency) and lexical richness (Lexical Resource) at the same time.
Aynı fikri üç farklı seviyede ifade etmek, ilerlemenin ne demek olduğunu en net gösteren yöntemdir. Aşağıdaki karşılaştırmalara dikkatle bak.
Technology is very good because we can talk to people easily and fast.
(Basit kelime, tekrar, genelleme.)
Modern technology allows us to communicate instantly with people all over the world.
(“instant communication” fikri, daha net yapı.)
Instant messaging has collapsed geographical barriers, allowing people to sustain meaningful relationships regardless of distance.
(Güçlü fiil “collapsed”, soyut isim, nüans.)
Robots take people's jobs and this is bad.
Automation can lead to job losses in factories and offices.
While automation displaces workers in routine roles, it also generates demand for higher-skilled positions that did not previously exist.
(Concession + iki yönlü analiz.)
Children use phones too much and it is not good for them.
Spending too much time on screens can harm children's development.
Excessive screen time in early childhood may impair concentration and stunt the development of vital social skills.
(Kesin fiiller “impair / stunt”, tema collocation.)
| Zayıf (kaçın) | Güçlü (tercih et) |
|---|---|
| very good / very bad | beneficial / detrimental |
| a lot of people | a growing proportion of the population |
| use technology | rely on / embrace / harness technology |
| things get better | standards of living improve markedly |
Expressing the same idea at three different levels is the clearest way to show what progress means. Look carefully at the comparisons below.
