İpucu: conduct, carry out araştırma/deney alır; do a research denmez çünkü research sayılamaz. Ayrıca evidence için doğru sıfatlar empirical, compelling, conclusive'dir; “strong proof” yerine compelling evidence daha akademiktir.
The following phrases are collocations that frequently occur in real, academic English. Use them as they are without disrupting natural co-occurrence.

Tip: conduct, carry out refers to research/experiments; do a research is incorrect because research is uncountable. Also, the correct adjectives for evidence are empirical, compelling, conclusive; “strong proof” is less academic than compelling evidence.
Aşağıdaki model cümleler yukarıdaki collocation'ları örnek soruya (Governments should spend money on scientific research rather than on more immediate needs. To what extent do you agree?) ve komşu alt konulara bağlar. Kalıbı al, konunu yerleştir.
Bir kalıbı ezberlerken “bağlaç + collocation” birlikte al: While… may also…, Because…, … must… yapıları hem coherence hem grammar puanını yükseltir.
The following model sentences connect the collocations above to the sample question (Governments should spend money on scientific research rather than on more immediate needs. To what extent do you agree?) and neighboring subtopics. Take the structure and insert your topic.
When memorizing a structure, take “connector + collocation” together: While… may also…, Because…, … must… structures enhance both coherence and grammar scores.
Speaking'de deyim ve phrasal verb doğallık (fluency) ve lexical resource puanını yükseltir — ama zorlama değil, yerinde kullanılmalı.
| Doğal ifade | Anlam |
|---|---|
| a game changer | oyunu değiştiren şey, çığır açan gelişme |
| to be at the cutting edge (of) | en ön saflarda / en ileri noktada olmak |
| to carry out a study | bir çalışma yürütmek |
| trial and error | deneme yanılma |
| to think outside the box | kalıpların dışında düşünmek |
| to weigh up the risks | riskleri tartmak/değerlendirmek |
| to take something with a pinch of salt | bir iddiaya ihtiyatla yaklaşmak |
| a leap forward | büyük bir ileri adım/sıçrama |
| to keep up with the latest developments | son gelişmeleri takip etmek |
Örnek yanıt cümleleri:
Speaking'de bir cevapta 1-2 deyim yeter. Peş peşe deyim sıralamak yapay durur ve akıcılığı düşürür.
Using idioms and phrasal verbs in Speaking enhances fluency and lexical resource scores — but they should not be forced; they must be used appropriately.
| Natural expression | Meaning |
|---|---|
| a game changer | something that changes the game, a groundbreaking development |
| to be at the cutting edge (of) | to be at the forefront / at the leading edge |
| to carry out a study | to conduct a study |
| trial and error | trial and error |
| to think outside the box | to think outside the box |
| to weigh up the risks | to weigh/evaluate the risks |
| to take something with a pinch of salt | to approach a claim with caution |
| a leap forward | a significant advance/jump |
| to keep up with the latest developments | to keep up with the latest developments |
Example response sentences:
In Speaking, 1-2 idioms in a response is sufficient. Listing idioms one after another feels artificial and reduces fluency.
Aynı fikri sıradan kelimeyle söylemekle (Band 5) üst düzey collocation'la söylemek (Band 7-9) arasındaki fark, lexical resource notunu belirler. Aşağıda aynı anlam üç seviyede yeniden yazılmıştır.
Sık geçen upgrade'ler:
| Sıradan | Band 7-9 |
|---|---|
| very new technology | cutting-edge technology |
| scientists found out | researchers demonstrated / established |
| an idea to test | a hypothesis to be tested |
| good for the future | yields long-term benefits |
Upgrade ederken doğallığı koru: “Büyük” kelime seçmek değil, doğru collocation'ı seçmek Band 9'dur. conduct research doğru; make a research zorlama ve yanlıştır.
The difference between expressing the same idea with ordinary words (Band 5) and expressing it with advanced collocations (Band 7-9) determines the lexical resource score. Below, the same meaning is rewritten at three levels.
Common upgrades:
| Ordinary | Band 7-9 |
|---|---|
| very new technology | cutting-edge technology |
| scientists found out | researchers demonstrated / established |
| an idea to test | a hypothesis to be tested |
| good for the future | yields long-term benefits |
While upgrading, maintain naturalness: choosing a “big” word is not the goal; selecting the correct collocation is what Band 9 is about. conduct research is correct; make a research is forced and incorrect.
Türk öğrencilerin bu temada en çok yaptığı hatalar genelde birebir çeviriden, yanlış eş-dizimden ve sayılabilirlik yanılgısından kaynaklanır.
Yanlış collocation / doğrudan çeviri hataları:
Sayılabilirlik tuzakları: research, evidence, progress, knowledge, equipment sayılamaz — “researches”, “evidences”, “a progress”, “equipments” yanlıştır. Kullan: a piece of research, a body of evidence, a piece of equipment. Buna karşın experiment, study, discovery, breakthrough sayılabilir ve çoğul olabilir.
Push öncesi kullanım kontrol listesi:
Band 7 lexical resource “zor kelime” değil, “doğru ve doğal kelime” ister. Emin olmadığın bir kalıbı kullanmaktansa bildiğin doğru collocation'ı (conduct research, empirical evidence) kullan.
The most common mistakes made by Turkish students on this theme generally stem from direct translation, incorrect collocation, and countability misconceptions.
Incorrect collocation / direct translation errors:
Countability traps: research, evidence, progress, knowledge, equipment are uncountable — “researches”, “evidences”, “a progress”, “equipments” are incorrect. Use: a piece of research, a body of evidence, a piece of equipment. In contrast, experiment, study, discovery, breakthrough are countable and can be plural.
Push pre-use checklist:
Band 7 lexical resource requires not “difficult words” but “correct and natural words.” Instead of using a structure you are unsure of, use the correct collocation you know (conduct research, empirical evidence).
