Tip: erode, safeguard, preserve, homogenise take abstract concepts (identity, culture, tradition). “erode a factory” is not said; “erode local identity” is said.
Aşağıdaki model cümleler yukarıdaki collocation'ları örnek soruya (Globalisation has done more harm than good. To what extent do you agree or disagree?) ve komşu alt konulara bağlar. Kalıbı al, konunu yerleştir.
Bir kalıbı ezberlerken “bağlaç + collocation” birlikte al: Rather than…, While… yet…, provided that… yapıları hem coherence hem grammar puanını yükseltir.
The model sentences below link the collocations above to a sample question (Globalisation has done more harm than good. To what extent do you agree or disagree?) and to neighbouring subtopics. Take the pattern and drop in your own topic.
When you memorise a pattern, take the “connector + collocation” together: Rather than…, While… yet…, provided that… structures raise both your coherence and grammar scores.
Speaking'de deyim ve phrasal verb doğallık (fluency) ve lexical resource puanını yükseltir — ama zorlama değil, yerinde kullanılmalı.
| Doğal ifade | Anlam |
|---|---|
| a global village | küresel köy (dünyanın küçülmesi) |
| to catch on (around the world) | (dünyada) tutmak/yaygınlaşmak |
| to jump on the bandwagon | popüler akıma uymak |
| to broaden your horizons | ufkunu genişletmek |
| the best of both worlds | iki tarafın da en iyisi |
| to be a double-edged sword | iki ucu keskin bir kılıç olmak |
| to lose touch with (your roots) | (köklerinle) bağını yitirmek |
| to be at odds with | ile çelişmek/ters düşmek |
| to spring up (everywhere) | (her yerde) mantar gibi bitmek |
Örnek yanıt cümleleri:
Speaking'de bir cevapta 1-2 deyim yeter. Peş peşe deyim sıralamak yapay durur ve akıcılığı düşürür.
In Speaking, idioms and phrasal verbs raise your fluency and lexical resource scores — but they should not be forced; use them where they fit.
| Natural expression | Meaning |
|---|---|
| a global village | küresel köy (dünyanın küçülmesi) |
| to catch on (around the world) | (dünyada) tutmak/yaygınlaşmak |
| to jump on the bandwagon | popüler akıma uymak |
| to broaden your horizons | ufkunu genişletmek |
| the best of both worlds | iki tarafın da en iyisi |
| to be a double-edged sword | iki ucu keskin bir kılıç olmak |
| to lose touch with (your roots) | (köklerinle) bağını yitirmek |
| to be at odds with | ile çelişmek/ters düşmek |
| to spring up (everywhere) | (her yerde) mantar gibi bitmek |
Example answer sentences:
One or two idioms per answer in Speaking is enough. Stacking idioms back to back sounds artificial and lowers fluency.
Aynı fikri sıradan kelimeyle söylemekle (Band 5) üst düzey collocation'la söylemek (Band 7-9) arasındaki fark, lexical resource notunu belirler. Aşağıda aynı anlam üç seviyede yeniden yazılmıştır.
Sık geçen upgrade'ler:
| Sıradan | Band 7-9 |
|---|---|
| make products in cheaper countries | outsource production to low-cost economies |
| rich people get richer | widen the gap between rich and poor |
| lose their own culture | experience the erosion of local identity |
| clever people leave the country | the brain drain of skilled workers |
Upgrade ederken doğallığı koru: “Büyük” kelime seçmek değil, doğru collocation'ı seçmek Band 9'dur. cultural homogenisation doğru; cultural sameness-isation gibi zorlama uydurmalar yapay durur.
The gap between saying the same idea with ordinary words (Band 5) and with high-level collocation (Band 7-9) determines your lexical resource score. Below, the same meaning is rewritten at three levels.
Common upgrades:
| Ordinary | Band 7-9 |
|---|---|
| make products in cheaper countries | outsource production to low-cost economies |
| rich people get richer | widen the gap between rich and poor |
| lose their own culture | experience the erosion of local identity |
| clever people leave the country | the brain drain of skilled workers |
When you upgrade, keep it natural: Band 9 is not about picking a “big” word but the right collocation. cultural homogenisation is correct; cultural sameness-isation and other forced coinages sound artificial.
The mistakes Turkish students make most often on this theme usually stem from direct translation and wrong word pairing.
Wrong collocation / direct-translation mistakes:
Countability and noun/adjective traps: trade, labour, wealth, progress are uncountable — “a trade” (except when it means a profession), “labours”, “wealths” are incorrect in the general sense. In addition, economy (noun) and economic (adjective) and economical (thrifty) get confused with one another.
Pre-submission usage checklist:
Band 7 lexical resource is not about “difficult words” but “correct and natural words”. Rather than using a pattern you are unsure of, use a correct collocation you know.
