The Academic Word List (AWL) consists of 570 word families compiled by Averil Coxhead from academic texts and is divided into 10 sublists based on frequency. Sublist 1 contains the most frequently occurring words, while Sublist 10 contains the least frequent ones. Sublist 6 stands right in the middle: these words are no longer "basic" but still appear throughout academic writing. Thus, recognizing them in IELTS Reading and using them correctly in Writing and Speaking makes a difference.
Why this list in particular? Because Sublist 6 is filled with transition words from everyday English to academic English. Verbs like reveal, enhance, initiate, allocate, exceed, transform read more maturely when they replace simpler counterparts like show, improve, start, give, go over, change. The Lexical Resource criterion in IELTS Writing measures just this: can you choose contextually appropriate, less common words instead of ordinary ones?
On this page, we provide the 60 headwords of Sublist 6 with their word families, then we practice them in IELTS sentences, reinforce them with collocation and upgrade examples, highlight common mistakes, and conclude with a mini-test. You can return to the AWL overview page for a general AWL strategy.
