Yer edatları, bir kişinin ya da nesnenin nerede olduğunu anlatan küçük ama çok güçlü kelimelerdir: in, on, at, between, under, behind, in front of ve daha fazlası.
|---|---|---|
| kutuda | in the box | kutunun içi = çevrelenmiş hacim |
| masada | on the table | masanın üstü = yüzey |
| durakta | at the bus stop | durak = harita üstünde bir nokta |
Gördüğünüz gibi Türkçe "-da" size hiçbir ipucu vermez; İngilizcede ise konumu zihninizde görmeniz gerekir: Bir şeyin içinde mi (in), üstünde mi (on), yoksa sadece bir noktada mı (at)? İşte bu "görme" alışkanlığı bu bölümün kalbidir.
Son olarak dikkat: aynı kelimeler (in/on/at) zaman için de kullanılır (bkz.
Prepositions of place are the small but very powerful words that describe where a person or object is: in, on, at, between, under, behind, in front of and more. In English you can hardly build any everyday sentence without saying where something is; that is why using these three or four words in the right place is one of the most fundamental building blocks of fluent speech.
So why does this topic exist, and why is it hard for Turkish learners? The answer lies directly in the structure of Turkish. In Turkish, location is usually expressed with a single suffix, -de / -da / -te / -ta for example: kutuda, masada, durakta. The same suffix covers all three cases. English, however, divides the same idea according to the type of the location into three separate prepositions.
| Turkish | English | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| kutuda | in the box | the inside of the box = enclosed volume |
| masada | on the table | the top of the table = surface |
| durakta | at the bus stop | stop = a point on the map |
As you can see, the Turkish "-da" gives you no clue; in English you must picture the position in your mind: Is it inside something (in), on a surface (on), or just at a point (at)? This habit of "seeing" is the heart of this section.
Finally, a caution: the same words (in/on/at) time are also used for Prepositions of Time) and some for movement too (see Prepositions of Movement). But their functions differ. In this section we deal only with place, i.e. static position: where something stands, not where it goes .
- in = bir şeyin içinde, çevrelenmiş alan: in the room, in the car, in Istanbul, in the water.
- on = bir yüzeyin üstünde, temas var: on the table, on the wall, on the floor, on the bus.
- at = belirli bir nokta ya da yer: at the door, at the corner, at the bus stop, at school.
- between = tam iki şeyin arasında: between the two houses.
- among = bir kalabalığın/grubun içinde: among the trees.
- under = altında: under the bed. over / above = üstünde (temassız).
- behind = arkasında; in front of = önünde; next to / beside = yanında.
- Türkçede tek '-de/-da' ekini İngilizce konuma göre in/on/at olarak üçe böler.
- Yer edatından sonra genellikle bir isim gelir: on the desk, at the station.
- Bazı kalıplar sabittir ve ezberlenir: at home, in bed, at work, in hospital (BrE).
- in = something's inside — an enclosed space: in the room, in the car, in Istanbul, in the water.
- on = on a surface , with contact: on the table, on the wall, on the floor, on the bus.
- at = a specific point or place: at the door, at the corner, at the bus stop, at school.
- between = between exactly two things: between the two houses.
- among = within a crowd/group : among the trees.
- under = below,: under the bed. over / above = over (no contact).
- behind = behind,; in front of = in front,; next to / beside = next to,.
- In English, Turkish's single '-de/-da' suffix, according to location, becomes in/on/at, split into three..
- A place preposition is usually followed by a noun : on the desk, at the station.
- Some patterns are fixed and memorized: at home, in bed, at work, in hospital (BrE).
Yer edatı bir cümlede be fiili (am/is/are/was/were) ya da başka bir fiille birlikte konum bildirir. Temel kalıp çok basittir: özne + fiil + yer edatı + isim öbeği.
Olumlu cümle
Formül: Özne + be + edat + the/a + isim. Edat, konumu; isim öbeği ise referans noktasını verir.
Olumsuz cümle
Olumsuzluk edatta değil, fiilde yapılır: be fiiline not eklenir. Edat aynı kalır.
Soru cümlesi
Konum sormak için genellikle Where soru kelimesi kullanılır ve be fiili öne alınır: Where + be + özne? Cevap yer edatıyla verilir. Evet/hayır sorusunda ise be başa gelir: Is/Are + özne + edat + isim?
| Soru | Kısa cevap |
|---|---|
| Where's the milk? | In the fridge. |
| Where are you? | At the bus stop. |
| Where's my jacket? | On the chair. |
| Where's the parking? | Behind the building. |
In a sentence, a place preposition, together with the be verb (am/is/are/was/were) or another verb, indicates location. The basic pattern is very simple: subject + verb + place preposition + noun phrase.
Affirmative sentence
Formula: Subject + be + preposition + the/a + noun. The preposition gives the position; the noun phrase gives the reference point.
Negative sentence
Negation is made not on the preposition but on the verb : to the be verb, not is added. The preposition stays the same.
Question sentence
To ask about location, we usually use the question word Where and move the be verb to the front: Where + be + subject? The answer is given with a place preposition. In a yes/no question, be comes first: Is/Are + subject + preposition + noun?
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| Where's the milk? | In the fridge. |
| Where are you? | At the bus stop. |
| Where's my jacket? | On the chair. |
| Where's the parking? | Behind the building. |
Aşağıda her yer edatının temel kullanımını, mantığını ve bol örneğini bulacaksınız. En yaygın üçlüden (in / on / at) başlayıp daha özel edatlara geçiyoruz.
in
Çevrelenmiş, sınırlı bir alanın içinde: in the box, in London, in the room.
on
Bir yüzeye temas hâlinde: on the table, on the wall, on the floor.
at
Belirli bir nokta ya da adres: at the door, at the bus stop, at home.
in — çevrelenmiş / sınırlı bir alanın içinde
in, bir şeyin üç boyutlu, etrafı sınırlı bir hacmin içinde olduğunu söyler. Kutular, odalar, binalar, araçlar (küçük, içine girilen), şehirler, ülkeler ve sıvılar hep 'in' ister. Zihinsel resim: bir şeyin içine kapanmış olması.
on — bir yüzeye temas
at — belirli bir nokta / yer
Buluşma yerleri, adresler, olay yerleri, tek bir konum genellikle 'at' alır. Ayrıca bir kişinin bir etkinliğe/kuruma amacıyla bulunduğu yerler (at school, at work, at the party) 'at' ister.
between / among — arasında
between tam iki (veya birbirinden ayırt edilebilen az sayıda) şeyin ortasını; among ise belirsiz bir kalabalığın/grubun içini anlatır. Kural: sayabildiğin ayrı nesneler varsa between, 'içinde kaybolduğun' bir çokluk varsa among.
under / below / over / above — alt ve üst
under = tam altında, çoğu zaman örtme/temas fikriyle. below = daha genel 'aşağı seviyede'. over = üstünde (genelde temassız, örtebilir). above = daha genel 'yukarı seviyede'. Günlük dilde under ve over en sık kullanılanlardır.
behind / in front of / next to / beside / opposite
Bunlar bakış açısına bağlı konum edatlarıdır. behind = arkasında, in front of = önünde, next to / beside = hemen yanında, opposite = tam karşısında.
Below you'll find the basic use, logic and plenty of examples for each place preposition. We start with the most common trio (in / on / at) and move on to more specific prepositions.
in
Something inside an enclosed, bounded area: in the box, in London, in the room.
on
In contact with a surface : on the table, on the wall, on the floor.
at
A specific point or address: at the door, at the bus stop, at home.
in — inside an enclosed / bounded area
in, says that something is inside a three-dimensional, enclosed volume. Boxes, rooms, buildings, small vehicles you get into, cities, countries and liquids all take 'in'. Mental image: being shut inside something.
on — contact with a surface
on, says that something touches a surface . The surface can be horizontal (table, floor) or vertical (wall, ceiling); what matters is contact. Also, on public transport (bus, train, plane) 'on' is used, because you're thought of as standing on a platform/floor.
at — a specific point / place
at, thinks of a place not by its size but as a point on the map. Meeting places, addresses, event locations, a single position usually take 'at'. Also, places where a person is for an event/institution (at school, at work, at the party) require 'at'.
between / among — in between
between describes the space between exactly two (or a few clearly distinguishable) things; among describes being within an indefinite crowd/group . Rule: if there are separate objects you can count, between; if there's a multitude you 'get lost in', among.
under / below / over / above — below and above
under = directly below, often with a sense of covering/contact. below = a more general 'at a lower level'. over = above/over (usually without contact, may cover). above = a more general 'at a higher level'. In everyday speech, under and over are the most common.
behind / in front of / next to / beside / opposite
These are position prepositions that depend on point of view. behind = at the back, in front of = in front, next to / beside = right beside, opposite = directly across from. They're very useful in giving directions and describing a room.
Aynı yer bazen birden fazla edatla anlatılabilir; ama seçtiğiniz edat bakış açınızı değiştirir. Konuşanın o yeri nasıl gördüğü, hangi edatın 'doğru' olduğunu belirler. Aşağıdaki ince farklar B1 seviyesinde bir öğrenciyi ileri taşır.
in the corner / at the corner / on the corner
in bed / on the bed
in the picture / on the picture
The same place can sometimes be described with more than one preposition; but the preposition you choose changes your point of view . How the speaker sees the place determines which preposition is 'correct'. The subtle differences below take a B1-level learner further.
in the corner / at the corner / on the corner
in bed / on the bed
in the picture / on the picture
- Türkçe '-de/-da' → İngilizce in / on / at (konuma göre seç).
- Türkçe 'X'in üstünde' → İngilizce on X ('üst' kelimesini ayrıca söylemezsin).
- Türkçe 'X'in içinde' → İngilizce in X ('iç' kelimesini ayrıca söylemezsin).
- Türkçe 'X'in arasında' (tek nesne için de kullanılır) → İngilizce ya between (iki) ya da among (çok).
- Türkçe genellikle edatı ismin sonuna ek olarak koyar; İngilizce ismin önüne ayrı kelime olarak koyar.
Practical mapping: wide area / city / country → in; a surface → on; a single point or address → at. Make it a habit to split the single Turkish "-de/-da" suffix into these three.
The Turkish location system is much more 'consolidating' than English: a single -de/-da case suffix (the locative) covers all three of English's in, on and at. Turkish also usually gives location with a possessive + postposition structure: 'masanın üstünde', 'kutunun içinde'. In English, a single preposition handles it.
- Turkish '-de/-da' → English in / on / at (choose by location).
- Turkish 'X'in üstünde' → English on X (you don't say the word 'üst' separately).
- Turkish 'X'in içinde' → English in X (you don't say the word 'iç' separately).
- Turkish 'X'in arasında' (also used for a single object) → English either between (two) or among (many).
- Turkish usually puts the preposition at the end of the noun as a suffix; English puts it before the noun as a separate word.
in/on/at kelimeleri hem yer, hem zaman, hem de hareket için kullanıldığı için karıştırılır. Aşağıdaki tablo aynı kelimenin farklı işlevlerini yan yana koyar. İşlevi cümlenin bağlamı belirler.
| Kelime | Yer (bu konu) | Zaman | Hareket |
|---|---|---|---|
| in | in the box (kutuda) | in May (Mayıs'ta) | walk in(to) the room |
| on | on the wall (duvarda) | on Monday (Pazartesi) | get on the bus (binmek) |
| at | at the door (kapıda) | at 5 o'clock (saat 5'te) | throw a ball at (fırlatmak) |
'She is in the room' (durağan) ile 'She walked into the room' (hareket) farkını Yön Edatları bölümünde derinlemesine göreceksiniz.
The words in/on/at get confused because they're used for place, time and movement alike. The table below places the same word's different functions side by side. The function is determined by the sentence's context .
| Word | Place (this topic) | Time | Movement |
|---|---|---|---|
| in | in the box | in May | walk in(to) the room |
| on | on the wall | on Monday | get on the bus |
| at | at the door | at 5 o'clock | throw a ball at |
The difference between place and movement is especially important: a place preposition tells where something stands, while a movement preposition tells where it is going . You'll see the difference between 'She is in the room' (static) and 'She walked into the room' (movement) in the Prepositions of Movement section in depth.
Hataların çoğu in / on / at üçlüsünü karıştırmaktan doğar.
Most mistakes in / on / at arise from confusing the trio. Don't let Turkish's single "-de/-da" suffix fool you: English marks the same place with a different preposition depending on perspective (inside it, on its surface, or at its point).
Bazı yer ifadeleri kuralı takip etmez; bunlar sabit kalıp olarak ezberlenir. Çoğu, artikelsiz (the/a olmadan) kullanılır ve mantıktan çok gelenekle yerleşmiştir.
| Kalıp | Anlam | Not |
|---|---|---|
| at home | evde | 'in home' YANLIŞ; ama 'in the house' doğru. |
| at work | işte | iş yerinde bulunma. |
| at school / university | okulda / üniversitede | öğrenci olarak; 'in school' AmE'de yaygın. |
| in hospital (BrE) | hastanede (hasta olarak) | AmE: 'in the hospital'. |
| in bed | yatakta (uyumak için) | on the bed = sadece üstünde. |
| in prison | hapishanede (mahkûm olarak) | in the prison = binada, ziyaretçi olarak. |
| on the way | yolda | hareket halinde. |
Some place expressions don't follow the rule; they are memorized as fixed expressions . Most are used without an article (no the/a) and are established by convention rather than logic.
| Expression | Meaning | Note |
|---|---|---|
| at home | at home | 'in home' is WRONG; but 'in the house' is correct. |
| at work | at work | being at one's workplace. |
| at school / university | at school / university | as a student; 'in school' is common in AmE. |
| in hospital (BrE) | in hospital (as a patient) | AmE: 'in the hospital'. |
| in bed | in bed (to sleep) | on the bed = merely on top. |
| in prison | in prison (as an inmate) | in the prison = in the building, as a visitor. |
| on the way | on the way | in motion. |
Akademik ve resmi yazıda yer edatları, özellikle grafik/harita/tablo tariflerinde ve konum tanımlarında hassas kullanılır. 'in the north of', 'on the border of', 'at the centre of' gibi kalıplar coğrafi ve bilimsel betimlemelerde standarttır. Ayrıca akademik dil 'among' ve 'between' ayrımına, günlük dilden daha çok dikkat eder.
- 'in the suburbs' ve 'in modest houses' — yerleşim ve bina içi = in.
- 'between the main railway line and the river' — iki referans nokta = between.
- 'at the local station' ve 'on the platform' — nokta (at) ve yüzey (on) ayrımı.
- 'on the upper floors' ve 'in the financial district' — kat yüzeyi (on) ve bölge içi (in).
- 'at home' — sabit kalıp, artikelsiz.
- 'Among the many findings' ve 'among the residential streets' — belirsiz çokluk = among.
- 'at the edge of the network' — soyut bir yapının kenarındaki nokta = at.
In academic and formal writing, place prepositions are used precisely, especially in describing charts/maps/tables and defining locations. Patterns like 'in the north of', 'on the border of', 'at the centre of' are standard in geographic and scientific descriptions. Academic language also pays more attention to the 'among' vs 'between' distinction than everyday speech does.
- 'in the suburbs' and 'in modest houses' — settlement and inside a building = in.
- 'between the main railway line and the river' — two reference points = between.
- 'at the local station' and 'on the platform' — the point (at) vs surface (on) distinction.
- 'on the upper floors' and 'in the financial district' — floor surface (on) and inside a district (in).
- 'at home' — a fixed, article-less expression.
- 'Among the many findings' and 'among the residential streets' — an indefinite multitude = among.
- 'at the edge of the network' — a point at the edge of an abstract structure = at.
- 'on the small table beside the bed' — yüzey (on) + yakınlık (beside) bir arada.
- 'under the pillow' — tam alt = under.
- 'behind the house' ve 'behind the door' — arkasında; farklı referans noktaları.
- 'between two flower pots' — tam iki nesne = between.
- 'in a small blue bowl' — kap içi = in.
- 'at the counter' — bir nokta/durma yeri = at.
- 'in the drawer' — çevrelenmiş alan = in.
- 'on the corner of a busy street' + 'opposite' + 'next to' — konum edatı üçlemesi.
- 'among the trees' — belirsiz çokluk = among (between değil).
- 'at the back, near the window' — arka bölge + yakınlık.
- 'on the small table beside the bed' — surface (on) + proximity (beside) together.
- 'under the pillow' — directly below = under.
- 'behind the house' and 'behind the door' — behind; different reference points.
- 'between two flower pots' — exactly two objects = between.
- 'in a small blue bowl' — inside a container = in.
- 'at the counter' — a point/spot = at.
- 'in the drawer' — enclosed space = in.
- 'on the corner of a busy street' + 'opposite' + 'next to' — a trio of position prepositions.
- 'among the trees' — an indefinite multitude = among (not between).
- 'at the back, near the window' — rear area + proximity.

Aşağıdaki sorular kuralı değil, anlamı test eder. Amaç, doğru edatın neden doğru olduğunu düşünmeni sağlamaktır.
- Bir kalem tam bir kutunun içine düştü. 'in' mi 'on' mu? Neden?in — çünkü kalem kutunun çevrelenmiş içine düştü, yüzeyine değmedi.
- Arkadaşınla bir sokağın kesiştiği köşede buluşacaksın. 'in the corner' mı 'at the corner' mı?at the corner — çünkü sokak köşesi dışarıda bir buluşma noktasıdır, odanın iç köşesi değil.
- Bir fotoğrafta üç kişi var. Onların fotoğrafın içeriğinde olduğunu söylemek için hangi edat?in the photo — resmin içeriği 'in' alır; 'on the photo' resmin fiziksel yüzeyi demektir.
- Bir grup insan (belirsiz çokluk) arasında oturuyorsun. 'between' mi 'among' mu?among — belirsiz/çok sayıda insan için among; between yalnızca iki (ya da sayılan az) nesne için.
- Uyumak için yatağına yattın. 'in bed' mi 'on the bed' mi?in bed — uyumak amacıyla yatmak sabit kalıptır; 'on the bed' sadece yatağın üstünde olmak demektir.
The following questions test not the rule but meaning . The aim is to make you think about why the correct preposition is correct.
- A pencil fell right inside a box. 'in' or 'on'? Why?in — because the pencil fell into the enclosed inside of the box, not onto its surface.
- You'll meet your friend at a street corner. 'in the corner' or 'at the corner'?at the corner — because a street corner is an outdoor meeting point, not the inner corner of a room.
- There are three people in a photo. Which preposition says they are in the photo's content?in the photo — a picture's content takes 'in'; 'on the photo' means the photo's physical surface.
- You're sitting among a group of people (an indefinite multitude). 'between' or 'among'?among — for an indefinite/large number of people, among; between is only for two (or a few countable) objects.
- You've lain down in your bed to sleep. 'in bed' or 'on the bed'?in bed — lying down to sleep is a fixed expression; 'on the bed' just means being on top of the bed.

Yatak/masa nerede (in/on/at)? Duvarda (on the wall) ne asılı? Bir şey arasında mı (between) yoksa altında mı (under)? Pencerenin yanında (next to) ne var? En az altı farklı yer edatı kullanmaya çalış.
- Örnek cevap yaz.My room is small but cosy. When you come in, the bed is on the right, under the window. There's a wooden desk opposite the bed, and my laptop is always on it. Between the desk and the wall, there is a tall bookshelf. My favourite books are on the top shelf, and some old boxes are under the bed. On the wall, above the desk, there is a big map of the world. My guitar stands in the corner, behind the door. At night, everything I need is within reach: my phone on the desk, my glasses on the small table beside the bed, and a warm blanket in easy reach.
Task: Write a short 6-8 sentence paragraph describing your own room or your favourite place (café, classroom, kitchen). The aim is to use the place prepositions from this section naturally and in variety.
Guiding questions: As you enter the room, what stands opposite you (opposite)? Where are the bed/desk (in/on/at)? What's hanging on the wall (on the wall)? Is something between (between) or under (under)? What's next to the window (next to)? Try to use at least six different place prepositions.
- Write a sample answer. My room is small but cosy.
Kavram kontrolü (CCQ): 'The cat is on the box' cümlesinde 'Is the cat inside the box? (Hayır) — Does the cat touch the box? (Evet)' diye sor. 'in the box' için tam tersi.
— öğretmen bir nesneyi saklar, öğrenciler yalnızca yer edatı kullanarak (Is it under…? Is it behind…?) sorup bulmaya çalışır.
Concept-checking (CCQ): For the sentence 'The cat is on the box', ask 'Is the cat inside the box? (No) — Does the cat touch the box? (Yes)'. For 'in the box' it's the opposite. These two questions help the learner internalize the surface/volume distinction.
Activity suggestion: 'I'm describing my room' game — one learner describes a room/picture and the others listen and draw. Then compare the drawings. A wrong preposition leads to a wrong drawing; this makes the mistake very visible. Second activity: 'Where's the object?' — the teacher hides an object and learners try to find it using only place prepositions (Is it under…? Is it behind…?).
- in = çevrelenmiş alanın içinde (kutu, oda, şehir, su); on = yüzeye temas (masa, duvar, otobüs); at = belirli nokta/etkinlik (kapı, durak, parti).
- Türkçe tek -de/-da ekini İngilizce konuma göre in/on/at olarak üçe böler; bu yüzden önce yeri zihninde canlandır.
- between = tam iki nesne arasında; among = belirsiz çokluk içinde.
- under = altında, over/above = üstünde (temassız), behind = arkasında, in front of = önünde, next to/beside = yanında, opposite = karşısında.
- Sabit kalıpları ezberle: at home, at work, at school, in bed, in hospital (BrE), in prison — çoğu artikelsiz.
- İnce farklar anlam değiştirir: in the corner (iç köşe) ≠ at the corner (sokak köşesi); in bed (uyumak) ≠ on the bed (yüzeyde).
- En yaygın hata 'in the table' (doğrusu on); 'İçini mi kastediyorum?' diye sorarak kendini denetle.
- in = inside an enclosed area (box, room, city, water); on = contact with a surface (table, wall, bus); at = a specific point/event (door, stop, party).
- The single Turkish -de/-da suffix splits, in English by location, into in/on/at — so first picture the place in your mind.
- between = between exactly two objects; among = within an indefinite multitude.
- under = below, over/above = above (no contact), behind = behind, in front of = in front, next to/beside = next to, opposite = across from.
- Memorize the fixed expressions: at home, at work, at school, in bed, in hospital (BrE), in prison — most are article-less.
- Subtle differences change the meaning: in the corner (inner corner) ≠ at the corner (street corner); in bed (to sleep) ≠ on the bed (on the surface).
- The same words are also used for time (Prepositions of Time) and movement (Prepositions of Movement); the function is determined by context .
- The most common mistake is 'in the table' (the correct form is on); check yourself by asking 'Do I mean the inside?'
