Karışık koşullar, İngilizcenin gerçek dışı (unreal) dünyayı anlatma gücünün en zarif noktasıdır. Şimdiye kadar öğrendiğin koşullarda koşul ve sonuç aynı zaman dilimine aitti: Type 2 tamamen şimdi/gelecekle (If I had money, I would travel), Type 3 tamamen geçmişle ilgiliydi (If I had had money, I would have traveled).
İngilizce bu iki zaman arasındaki mantıksal köprüyü tek bir cümlede kurmanı sağlar: If I had accepted that job (geçmiş), I would be rich now (şimdi).
Neden zor? Türk öğrenci "olsaydım... olurdum" derken iki tarafın da hangi zamana ait olduğunu Türkçede net hissetmez, çünkü Türkçede sonuç eki (-ırdı) hem geçmişi hem şimdiyi karşılayabilir. İngilizcede ise would be (şimdi) ile would have been (geçmiş) apayrı yapılardır ve karıştırmak cümleyi anlamsızlaştırır. Bu bölüm, o iki köprüyü sağlam kurmayı öğretecek.
İki yarının zamanını karıştırmak cümleyi anlamsızlaştırır: koşul ve sonuç farklı zamana bakar; doğru eşle.
Mixed conditionals are the most elegant point of English's power to describe the unreal world. In the conditionals you have learned so far, the condition and the result belonged tothe same time frame:Type 2 was entirely about the present/future (If I had money, I would travel),Type 3 was entirely about the past (If I had had money, I would have traveled). In mixed conditionals, however, these two timescross over: the condition happens in one time and the result in another.
Why does this structure exist? Because that is how life works. A decision you made in the past shapes your life today. Who you are today explains how you behaved in the past. English lets you build the logical bridge between these two times in a single sentence:If I had accepted that job (past), I would be rich now (present).Standard conditionals cannot build this bridge; that gap is exactly where mixed conditionals are born.
Turkish parallel:In Turkish we build this idea with the "-saydı/-seydi… -ardı/-erdi" and "-saydı… -mazdı" patterns: "Tıp okusaydım, şimdi doktor olurdum." Turkish loads verb-tense information largely ontoşimdi, o zaman, hâlâ such adverbs; English, on the other hand, buries the informationin the verb conjugation itself — and that is exactly where the difficulty begins.
Why is it hard? When a Turkish learner says "olsaydım… olurdum," they cannot clearly feel which time each half belongs to, because in Turkish the result ending (-ırdı) can cover both the past and the present. In English, however, would be (present) andwould have been (past) are completely separate structures, and confusing them makes the sentence meaningless. This section will teach you to build those two bridges soundly.
Mixing up the tenses of the two halves makes the sentence meaningless: the condition and the result look atdifferent times; match them correctly.
If + had + V3, ... would + V1.
- Tip 2: Şimdiki kalıcı gerçek → geçmiş sonuç. If + past simple, ... would have + V3.
- Sonuç yarısında would yerine kesinliğe göre could / might kullanılabilir.
- Zaman zarfları (now, today, still, yesterday, back then) hangi yarının hangi zamana ait olduğunu belli eder.
- If cümlesi başta ya da sonda olabilir; başta olduğunda virgül konur.
- Resmi/edebî dilde if düşürülüp Had I known... gibi ters çevrilmiş yapı kullanılır.
- Sonuç şu an sürüyorsa would be + V-ing tercih edilir (would be living, would be working).
- Mixed conditionalsare unreal: what is described did not happen or is not true.
- The condition and the resultbelong to different times; that is the only thing that sets them apart from standard conditionals.
- Type 1 (the most common):Past condition → present result.If + had + V3, ... would + V1.
- Type 2:Present permanent fact → past result.If + past simple, ... would have + V3.
- In the result half, instead ofwould, could / might can be used, depending on how certain you are.
- Time adverbs (now, today, still, yesterday, back then) show which half belongs to which time.
- If clause can come first or last; when it comes first, a comma is used.
- In formal/literary language,if is dropped and aHad I known...-style inverted structure is used.
- If the result is still ongoing now, would be + V-ingis preferred (would be living, would be working).
- This structure often carriesregret, criticism, or a cause-and-effect explanation.
If + had + V3, ... would + V1. Geçmişte olmayan olay, bugünü etkiler.
Tip 2 — şimdi → geçmiş
If + past simple, ... would have + V3. Bugünkü kalıcı gerçek, geçmiş sonucu açıklar.
Tip 1: Geçmiş koşul → Şimdiki sonuç (Olumlu)
Formül: If + özne + had + V3 (past perfect), özne + would + V1. Geçmişte gerçekleşmemiş bir olay, bugünü etkiliyor.
If + özne + had + V3 (past perfect), özne + would + V1. Geçmişteki koşul, bugünkü sonuç.
Tip 2: Şimdiki gerçek → Geçmiş sonuç (Olumlu)
Formül: If + özne + past simple, özne + would have + V3.
Olumsuzluk her iki yarıda ayrı ayrı kurulabilir: koşulda hadn't + V3 / didn't + V1, sonuçta wouldn't + V1 / wouldn't have + V3.
Soru Biçimi
Soru, sonuç yarısında kurulur; would öznenin önüne gelir. Koşul yarısı değişmez.
| Yarı | Zaman | Yapı | Örnek |
|---|---|---|---|
| Koşul (Tip 1) | Geçmiş | if + had + V3 | If I had left... |
| Sonuç (Tip 1) | Şimdi | would + V1 | ...I would be here. |
| Koşul (Tip 2) | Şimdi (kalıcı) | if + past simple | If I were rich... |
| Sonuç (Tip 2) | Geçmiş | would have + V3 | ...I would have bought it. |
There are two main types of mixed conditional. In each type, one half looks at one time and the other half at another. Let's look first at the affirmative patterns, then at the negative and question forms.
Type 1 — past → present
If + had + V3, ... would + V1.An event that did not happen in the past affects today.
Type 2 — present → past
If + past simple, ... would have + V3.A present permanent fact explains a past result.
Type 1: Past condition → Present result (Affirmative)
Formula: If + subject +had+ V3 (past perfect), subject +would + V1.An event that did not take place in the past affects today.
If + subject + had + V3 (past perfect), subject + would + V1. The past condition, the present result.
Type 2: Present fact → Past result (Affirmative)
Formula: If + subject +past simple, subject +would have + V3.A permanent fact that is true today explains a result in the past.
Negative Form
Negation can be built separately in each half: in the conditionhadn't + V3 / didn't + V1, and in the resultwouldn't + V1 / wouldn't have + V3.
Question Form
The question is formed in the result half;would comes before the subject. The condition half does not change.
| Half | Time | Structure | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Condition (Type 1) | Past | if + had + V3 | If I had left... |
| Result (Type 1) | Present | would + V1 | ...I would be here. |
| Condition (Type 2) | Present (permanent) | if + past simple | If I were rich... |
| Result (Type 2) | Past | would have + V3 | ...I would have bought it. |
Tip 1'in ana işi budur: geçmişte yapılan/yapılmayan bir şey, bugünkü hayatı belirler. Genellikle sonuç yarısında now, today, still gibi zarflar bulunur.
2. Bugünkü kalıcı bir özelliğin geçmişteki davranışı açıklaması
Tip 2'nin ana işi: bir kişinin değişmeyen özelliği, yeteneği veya durumu, geçmişte neden öyle davrandığını açıklar.
3. Pişmanlık ve keşke anlamı
Karışık koşullar sık sık pişmanlık taşır. Bu yönüyle wish / if only yapısına çok yakındır; fark, koşulun sebep-sonuç ilişkisini açıkça kurmasıdır.
Although mixed conditionals look like a single pattern, in everyday language they appear with several different functions. Let's go from the most common to the more specific.
1. Explaining the present result of a past decision (most common)
This is the main job of Type 1: something done or not done in the past determines life today. The result half usually contains adverbs likenow, today, still.
2. A present permanent trait explaining past behaviour
The main job of Type 2: a person's unchanging trait, ability, or situation explains why they behaved a certain way in the past.
3. Regret and the sense of "if only"
Mixed conditionals often carry regret. In this respect they are very close to thewish / if only structure; the difference is that the conditional explicitly establishes the cause-and-effect relationship.
4. Criticism and blame (gentle or harsh)
It is also used to criticise someone's present/past behaviour. The tone changes with the chosen verb and the context.
|---|---|---|
| now / right now | Şimdiki sonuç (Tip 1) | ...I would be free now. |
| today / these days | Şimdiki sonuç (Tip 1) | ...she would be famous today. |
| still | Şimdiki sonuç (Tip 1) | ...we would still be together. |
| by now | Şimdiki sonuç (Tip 1) | ...I would have a degree by now. |
| yesterday / last night | Geçmiş sonuç (Tip 2) | ...I would have helped you yesterday. |
| back then / at that time | Geçmiş sonuç (Tip 2) | ...I would have said yes back then. |
| last week / in 2010 | Geçmiş sonuç (Tip 2) | ...they would have come last week. |
In a mixed conditional, which half belongs to which time is often given away bytime adverbs. They are the fastest way to crack a sentence, but they are a clue, not conclusive proof.
| Adverb | The half it usually points to | Example |
|---|---|---|
| now / right now | Present result (Type 1) | ...I would be free now. |
| today / these days | Present result (Type 1) | ...she would be famous today. |
| still | Present result (Type 1) | ...we would still be together. |
| by now | Present result (Type 1) | ...I would have a degree by now. |
| yesterday / last night | Past result (Type 2) | ...I would have helped you yesterday. |
| back then / at that time | Past result (Type 2) | ...I would have said yes back then. |
| last week / in 2010 | Past result (Type 2) | ...they would have come last week. |
Karışık koşulların gücü, sonuç yarısındaki modalı değiştirerek kesinlik derecesini ince ayarlayabilmenden gelir. Would güçlü bir sonuç bildirir; could imkânı, might ise zayıf ihtimali anlatır.
Devam eden sonuç: Eğer bugünkü sonuç şu anda süren bir durumsa, would be + V-ing yapısı hem daha doğal hem daha canlıdır. Bu, olayın "şu an tam gözünün önünde" olduğunu hissettirir.
"You forgot the map" demek yerine "If you hadn't forgotten the map, we wouldn't be lost now" demek, hatayı sonuca bağlayarak yumuşatır ama aynı zamanda net biçimde işaret eder. Ton, ses ve bağlamla belirlenir.
The power of mixed conditionals comes from being able to fine-tunethe degree of certaintyby changing the modal in the result half.Would signals a strong result;could signals possibility, might on the other hand signals a faint possibility.
Ongoing result:If today's result is a situation happening right now, would be + V-ing is both more natural and more vivid. It makes you feel the event is "right in front of you" now.
Perspective and politeness:A mixed conditional can also be an indirect, more polite way of criticising instead of blaming directly. Instead of saying "You forgot the map," saying "If you hadn't forgotten the map, we wouldn't be lost now" softens the fault by tying it to the result, while still pointing to it clearly. The tone is set by voice and context.
- Türkçe "okusaydım" → hem if I had studied (geçmiş) hem if I studied (şimdi) olabilir; hangisi olduğunu cümlenin geri kalanı belirler.
- Türkçe "olurdum" → hem I would be (şimdi) hem I would have been (geçmiş) karşılığıdır.
Compared with English, the Turkish conditional structurecarries less tense information. In Turkish the "-saydı/-seydi" ending can express both a past and a present condition; the result ending "-ardı/-erdi" can also express both a past and a present result. This flexibility causes no problem in Turkish because we understand the time from context and adverbs. But when translating into English, this ambiguity leads to serious mistakes.
- Turkish "okusaydım" → can be bothif I had studied (past) andif I studied (present); which one it is depends on the rest of the sentence.
- Turkish "olurdum" → is the equivalent of bothI would be (present) andI would have been (past).
- When a Turkish learner carries this two-layered ambiguity into English, the structure collapses: to build the right bridge you must think about the time of each half separately.
- Solution: Before translating a Turkish sentence, ask yourself "is this part in the past or the present?" and choose the English structure accordingly.
|---|---|---|---|
| Type 2 (Koşul: Type 2) | Şimdi/gelecek | Şimdi/gelecek | If I had money, I would travel. |
| Type 3 (Koşul: Type 3) | Geçmiş | Geçmiş | If I had had money, I would have traveled. |
| Karışık Tip 1 | Geçmiş | Şimdi | If I had saved money, I would be rich now. |
| Karışık Tip 2 | Şimdi (kalıcı) | Geçmiş | If I were rich, I would have traveled last year. |
Because mixed conditionals are a combination of the standard conditional types, they are easily confused with them. Let's put them side by side to see the difference.
| Type | Condition time | Result time | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type 2 (Condition: Type 2) | Present/future | Present/future | If I had money, I would travel. |
| Type 3 (Condition: Type 3) | Past | Past | If I had had money, I would have traveled. |
| Mixed Type 1 | Past | Present | If I had saved money, I would be rich now. |
| Mixed Type 2 | Present (permanent) | Past | If I were rich, I would have traveled last year. |
As you can see, mixed conditionals are really the crossed combination of the halves ofType 2 andType 3. Mixed Type 1 = Type 3's if-half + Type 2's result-half. Mixed Type 2 = Type 2's if-half + Type 3's result-half.
Ters çevirme (inversion) ile if'siz koşul
Resmi ve edebî dilde if düşürülür, had öznenin önüne getirilir. Anlam aynı kalır ama ton yükselir.
"But for" ve "were it not for" ile koşul
But for (olmasaydı) ve were it not for / had it not been for kalıpları, tek bir isimle koşulu özetler; çoğu zaman karışık sonuçla birleşir.
Although the rule for mixed conditionals is solid, there are some special cases and stylistic variants. These matter for advanced, natural, and expressive language.
The if-less conditional with inversion
In formal and literary language,if is dropped, andhad is brought before the subject. The meaning stays the same but the tone rises.
Conditionals with "But for" and "were it not for"
But for (if it weren't for) andwere it not for / had it not been for summarise the condition in a single noun; they often combine with a mixed result.
Karışık koşullar sanıldığı kadar "kitabi" değildir; günlük konuşmada, özellikle pişmanlık, sitem ve "şu an nerede olurdum" hayallerinde sürekli geçer. Konuşmada would genellikle 'd, had ise 'd olarak kısalır — bağlam ikisini ayırır.
Mixed conditionals are not as "bookish" as people think; in everyday speech they come up constantly, especially in regret, reproach, and "where would I be now" daydreams. In speech, wouldusually becomes'd, hadalso becomes'd — and context tells the two apart.
Bu registerde ters çevirme (Had..., Were it not for...) ve would yerine daha temkinli might/could tercih edilir.
- "If that decision had been reversed... the workforce today would be..." → geçmiş koşul (edilgen past perfect) + şimdiki sonuç: klasik Tip 1 karışık.
- "if the population were not as young as it currently is... would have materialised" → şimdiki kalıcı gerçek + geçmiş sonuç: Tip 2 karışık.
- Akademik registerde would yerine "would arguably / might well / could conceivably" ile kesinlik yumuşatılıyor.
- Edilgen çatı (had been reversed) resmi yazıda özneyi geri plana atmak için tercih edilir.
- Metin karşı-olgusal (counterfactual) akıl yürütmenin karışık koşullarla nasıl kurulduğunu örnekliyor; bu, sosyal bilimlerde temel bir düşünme biçimidir.
In academic and formal writing, mixed conditionals are valuable for analysing the effect of a past event on a present situation, or the past consequences of a present condition. In history, economics, and the social sciences they are the basic tool of "counterfactual" reasoning. In this register, inversion (Had..., Were it not for...) and, instead ofwould, the more cautiousmight/couldare preferred.
- "If that decision had been reversed... the workforce today would be..." → past condition (passive past perfect) + present result: a classic Mixed Type 1.
- "if the population were not as young as it currently is... would have materialised" → present permanent fact + past result: Mixed Type 2.
- The adverbs "currently" and "today" signal to the reader that the condition and the result are in different times.
- In the academic register, certainty is softened with "would arguably / might well / could conceivably" instead of would.
- The passive voice (had been reversed) is preferred in formal writing to push the subject into the background.
- The text illustrates how counterfactual reasoning is built with mixed conditionals; this is a fundamental mode of thinking in the social sciences.
- "if she had stayed in that job, her life would look completely different today" → geçmiş koşul + şimdiki sonuç (today): Tip 1 karışık.
- "If she hadn't walked out... she wouldn't be sitting here now" → olumsuz Tip 1; would be sitting devam eden şimdiki sonucu resmeder.
- "if she were a more cautious person, she would have listened" → şimdiki kalıcı özellik + geçmiş sonuç: Tip 2 karışık.
- "If the landlord hadn't offered her a lower rent... the shop would have closed" → bu saf Type 3 (her iki yarı geçmiş); metin karışık ve saf tipleri doğal biçimde harmanlıyor.
- "if she weren't so stubborn, she would have given up" → Tip 2 karışık; kalıcı huy → geçmiş sonuç.
- "If she hadn't emptied her savings..., she would have a comfortable cushion now" → geçmiş harcama + şimdiki durum: Tip 1 karışık.
- Deniz'in sözü "If I weren't so afraid..., I would have handed in my notice years ago" → şimdiki kalıcı korku + geçmiş yapılmamış eylem: diyalog içinde Tip 2 karışık.
- "if she hadn't sent him that first hopeful postcard, he wouldn't still be dreaming... today" → geçmiş koşul + still/today ile devam eden şimdiki sonuç: Tip 1 karışık.
- "if she hadn't taken the risk, she would still be climbing" → Tip 1; still zarfı şimdiki devam eden sonucu vurgular.
- "if she had stayed in that job, her life would look completely different today" → past condition + present result (today): Mixed Type 1.
- "If she hadn't walked out... she wouldn't be sitting here now" → negative Type 1; would be sitting depicts the ongoing present result.
- "if she were a more cautious person, she would have listened" → present permanent trait + past result: Mixed Type 2.
- "If the landlord hadn't offered her a lower rent... the shop would have closed" → this is pure Type 3 (both halves past); the text naturally blends mixed and pure types.
- "if she weren't so stubborn, she would have given up" → Mixed Type 2; permanent temperament → past result.
- "If she hadn't emptied her savings..., she would have a comfortable cushion now" → past spending + present situation: Mixed Type 1.
- Deniz's line "If I weren't so afraid..., I would have handed in my notice years ago" → present permanent fear + a past action not taken: a Mixed Type 2 within dialogue.
- "if she hadn't sent him that first hopeful postcard, he wouldn't still be dreaming... today" → past condition + ongoing present result with still/today: Mixed Type 1.
- "if she hadn't taken the risk, she would still be climbing" → Type 1; the adverb still stresses the ongoing present result.
- The text shows how natural a tool mixed conditionals are for telling a life story: they bridge past decisions and present identity.

Aşağıdaki sorular kuralı değil, anlamı test eder. Her cümlenin arkasındaki gerçek durumu düşün: gerçekte ne oldu, ne olmadı?
- If I had studied engineering, I would earn more now. — Gerçekte ne oldu? Koşul ve sonuç hangi zamanda?Gerçekte mühendislik OKUMADIM ve şu an daha AZ kazanıyorum. Koşul geçmişte, sonuç şimdi (Tip 1 karışık).
- If I were more patient, I wouldn't have shouted at her yesterday.
- If we hadn't missed the train, we would be at the concert right now. — Konser gerçekte oluyor mu, bu kişiler orada mı?Treni kaçırdık, bu yüzden şu an konserde DEĞİLİZ. Konser gerçekte oluyor ama onlar orada değil. Koşul geçmiş, sonuç şimdi.
- Had she accepted the offer, she would be living in Tokyo today.

- If we hadn't missed the train, we would be at the concert right now. — Is the concert actually happening, and are these people there? We missed the train, so we are NOT at the concert right now. The concert is really happening, but they are not there. The condition is past, the result present.
- Had she accepted the offer, she would be living in Tokyo today. — Did the person accept the offer, and where does she live? She did NOT accept the offer, so she does NOT live in Tokyo today. Inverted Type 1; the condition is past, the result present.
- If he didn't have such a bad temper, he would have kept that job. — Did he keep his job, and what is his temperament like?He HAS a bad temper (permanent), so he did NOT keep that job. The condition is present/permanent, the result past (Mixed Type 2).

(Tip 2)
- Şu an nerede olurdun? En az bir cümlede would be + V-ing kullanmayı dene.
- Pişman mısın yoksa memnun musun? Tonu buna göre ayarla.
Örnek cevap: "Three years ago, I turned down a job in Istanbul. If I had accepted it, I would probably be living in a big city now, surrounded by noise and traffic. Honestly, if I were a more ambitious person, I would have taken that offer without a second thought. But I love quiet places, and if I weren't so attached to my hometown, I would have moved away years ago. Sometimes I wonder about it. If I had said yes, I would be earning far more today — but I also wouldn't be as happy as I am. If I hadn't trusted my instincts back then, I would still be chasing a life that was never really mine."
Task:Write a short paragraph (5-7 sentences) about a decision you did or didn't make in your life. Use at leastthree mixed conditionals in the paragraph: at least one Type 1 (past → present) and at least one Type 2 (present → past).
Guiding questions:
- Which decision did you make or not make in the past? How has it affected your life today? (Type 1)
- Which permanent trait of your personality or situation led you to do or not do something in the past? (Type 2)
- Where would you be now? In at least one sentence, try to usewould be + V-ing.
- Are you regretful or content? Adjust the tone accordingly.
Sample answer: "Three years ago, I turned down a job in Istanbul.
Kavram kontrolü (CCQ) soruları: Her örnekte "Did it really happen? Is it true now?" diye sor. Örneğin "If I had studied, I would be a doctor now" için: "Did I study?" (No) "Am I a doctor now?" (No) "Which part is past, which is present?" Öğrenci zamanları işaretleyene kadar üretime geçme.
En sık hata: if-clause içinde "would have" kullanımı (If I would have known...). Bu, özellikle Amerikan konuşma dilinden etkilenen öğrencilerde inatçıdır. Kuralı sürekli tekrarla: "would" ve "if" aynı yarıda buluşamaz." Bunu bir slogan hâline getir.
Etkinlik önerisi: "Life map" etkinliği: Öğrenciler kendi hayatlarından bir dönüm noktası seçer, tahtaya bir ok çizer (geçmiş karar → bugünkü sonuç), sonra ok üzerine karışık koşul cümlesi kurar. Kişisel bağlam üretimi çok hızlandırır. Alternatif: ünlü kişilerin/tarihi olayların "what if" senaryoları (Had Napoleon won at Waterloo...) ileri sınıflarda counterfactual kullanımı pekiştirir.
Concept-checking (CCQ) questions:For every example, ask "Did it really happen? Is it true now?" For example, for "If I had studied, I would be a doctor now": "Did I study?" (No) "Am I a doctor now?" (No) "Which part is past, which is present?" Don't move on to production until the student marks the tenses.
Most common mistake:using "would have" inside the if-clause (If I would have known...). This is stubborn, especially in students influenced by American spoken English. Keep repeating the rule:"would" and "if" cannot meet in the same half."Turn it into a slogan.
Activity suggestion:The "Life map" activity: students pick a turning point from their own lives, draw an arrow on the board (past decision → present result), then build a mixed-conditional sentence over the arrow. Personal context speeds up production a lot. Alternative: "what if" scenarios of famous people/historical events (Had Napoleon won at Waterloo...) reinforce counterfactual use in advanced classes.
If + had + V3, ... would + V1.
- Tip 2: Şimdiki kalıcı gerçek → geçmiş sonuç. If + past simple, ... would have + V3.
- if-clause'da asla "would" kullanılmaz; would yalnızca sonuç yarısına aittir.
- Sonuç şu an sürüyorsa would be + V-ing; kesinlik azalıyorsa could / might kullanılır.
- Zaman zarfları (now, today, yesterday, back then) hangi yarının hangi zamana ait olduğunu işaret eder ama garanti değildir.
- Resmi/edebî dilde Had I known..., Were it not for..., But for... gibi ters çevrilmiş biçimler kullanılır.
- Türkçedeki "-saydı... -ardı" esnekliği yanıltıcıdır; her yarının zamanını ayrı ayrı belirlemek şarttır.
- Mixed conditionals are unreal structures in which the condition and the resultbelong to different times.
- Type 1 (the most common):Past condition → present result.If + had + V3, ... would + V1.
- Type 2:Present permanent fact → past result.If + past simple, ... would have + V3.
- In the if-clause,never use "would"; would belongs only to the result half.
- If the result is still ongoing now, would be + V-ing; if certainty decreases, could / might is used.
- Time adverbs (now, today, yesterday, back then) signal which half belongs to which time, but they are not a guarantee.
- In formal/literary language,Had I known..., Were it not for..., But for... and similar inverted forms are used.
- The Turkish "-saydı... -ardı" flexibility is misleading; you must determine the time of each half separately.
- Mixed conditionals are used most for regret, criticism, and counterfactual reasoning.
- For comparison:Type 2, Type 3 and for regret,wish / if only.
