Restatement, YDT'de “bu cümleyle aynı anlama gelen” şıkkı seçtiğin sorulardır. İngilizce kök cümle korunur; sen yalnızca anlam denkliğini test edersin.
Restatement questions in YDT are the ones where you choose the option that “means the same as this sentence”. The English stem sentence is kept; you only test the equivalence of meaning.
Restatement (rewording) questions in YDT ask you to find the option that re-expresses the meaning of an English sentence most accurately and completely. The correct option keeps the sentence's modality, scope, logical relationship and negation exactly, but says it with a different structure. Distractors secretly break one of these four elements. The most common trap is the option that carries the most words in common with the stem sentence; that option usually sounds familiar but shifts the meaning. On this page you will find, at B1-B2 level, the method of extracting the meaning skeleton, the four elements to preserve, and three worked examples.
3 saniyelik refleks: Önce kök cümlenin anlam iskeletini çıkar — kim ne yaptı? (özne-eylem), hangi kip? (zorunluluk / olasılık / geçmiş / öneri...), hangi kapsam? (herkes mi bazıları mı, her zaman mı bazen mi), hangi mantıksal ilişki? (neden-sonuç / zıtlık / koşul), olumlu mu olumsuz mu? Sonra her şıkkı bu dört filtreden geçir. Bir öğeyi bile bozan şık elenir. Kalan tek şık doğrudur. Doğru şık genelde en uzun ya da en tanıdık şık değildir.
A 3-second reflex: First extract the meaning skeleton of the stem sentence — who did what? (subject-action), which modality? (obligation / possibility / past / advice...), which scope? (everyone or some, always or sometimes), which logical relationship? (cause-effect / contrast / condition), affirmative or negative? Then run each option through these four filters. An option that breaks even one element is eliminated. The single option left is correct. The correct option is usually not the longest or the most familiar option.
Örneğin “She couldn't attend the meeting because she was ill.” cümlesinin doğru yeniden ifadesi “Her illness prevented her from attending the meeting.” olabilir — tek bir ortak fiil yok denecek kadar az, ama anlam bire bir aynı.
Restatement, or yeniden ifade etme in Turkish, is the skill of saying a sentence with different words and different grammatical structures without its meaning changing at all. In YDT the question pattern is fixed: you are given an English stem sentence, five English options below it, and you are asked to choose the one that is “closest in meaning”.
The key word here is “closest”. The correct option does not repeat the words of the stem sentence; it rebuilds its meaning. That is, you paraphrase: you express the same message with different words and a different structure. For example, the correct restatement of “She couldn't attend the meeting because she was ill.” could be “Her illness prevented her from attending the meeting.” — there is next to no shared verb, but the meaning is exactly the same.
The logic of paraphrase: A good restatement keeps the meaning of the sentence and frees its words. That is why saying “I saw the same words” misleads you. You look for the meaning; you don't hunt for words.
Restatement questions are really a test of reading comprehension and logic; they do not measure hidden grammar knowledge. So the safest way is to summarise the sentence in your own words without panicking, and only then look at the options.
Why is this question type so important in YDT? Because it appears on its own in the grammar-vocabulary section, and it is also a small rehearsal of the “what does the author mean?” logic in reading paragraphs. A student who grows stronger at restatement also speeds up at telling the correct option apart in paragraph questions. At B1-B2 level the sentences are short and about a single event; so if you settle the method here, you save time in the exam. Remember: the correct option does not have to say the sentence more beautifully, it only has to say the same thing.
The solid method in restatement is to reduce the stem sentence to its meaning skeleton before diving into the options. The skeleton is the answer to four questions. If you make this clear, the distractors give themselves away.
The most common mistake while applying these steps is jumping to the options the moment you read the stem sentence. If you enter the options unprepared, your eye catches on the familiar words and you fall into the trap. But if you extract the skeleton first, you enter the options with a checklist: you only look at “does this option break the skeleton?” The second tip: when you are stuck between two options, find the single word that makes the difference (usually a quantity, a connector or a negation word) and compare that word with the stem sentence. The decision is usually hidden in that single word.
Bir yeniden ifadenin doğru sayılması için kök cümleyle dört öğede tam uyuşması gerekir. Aşağıdaki tabloda her öğe için “korunursa doğru / bozulursa çeldirici” ayrımını gör.
| Öğe | Korunursa (doğru) | Bozulursa (çeldirici) |
|---|---|---|
| Kip (modality) | Zorunluluk, olasılık, öneri veya yetenek aynı kalır: must → have to. | must (zorunluluk) → might (olasılık) yapılır; kesinlik derecesi kayar. |
| Kapsam (scope) | Nicelik/sıklık sabit: most students → “öğrencilerin çoğu”. | some → all, ya da often → always gibi genelleme yapılır. |
| Mantıksal ilişki | Neden-sonuç, zıtlık veya koşul yönü korunur. | Sebep ile sonuç yer değiştirir ya da zıtlık, neden-sonuca çevrilir. |
| Olumsuzluk | Olumlu/olumsuz değeri aynı: didn't succeed → failed. | Gizli olumsuzluk (fail, unless, hardly) atlanır; cümle olumluya döner. |
Pratik ipucu: Kök cümleyi okurken bu dört öğeyi kalemle işaretle. Şıkları okurken tek tek “Kip aynı mı? Kapsam aynı mı? İlişki aynı mı? Olumsuzluk aynı mı?” diye sor. Dördü de “evet” ise doğru şık odur.
For a restatement to count as correct, it must match the stem sentence exactly in four elements. In the table below, see the “if preserved, correct / if broken, distractor” distinction for each element.
| Element | If preserved (correct) | If broken (distractor) |
|---|---|---|
| Modality | Obligation, possibility, advice or ability stays the same: must → have to. | must (obligation) → might (possibility); the degree of certainty shifts. |
| Scope | Quantity/frequency fixed: most students → “the majority of students”. | over-generalisation such as some → all, or often → always. |
| Logical relationship | The direction of cause-effect, contrast or condition is preserved. | Cause and effect swap places, or contrast is turned into cause-effect. |
| Negation | The affirmative/negative value is the same: didn't succeed → failed. | A hidden negation (fail, unless, hardly) is missed; the sentence turns affirmative. |
Practical tip: Mark these four elements with your pen while reading the stem sentence. While reading the options, ask one by one “Is the modality the same? Is the scope the same? Is the relationship the same? Is the negation the same?” If all four are “yes”, that is the correct option.
Örnek 1. Unless you book your ticket early, you won't get a discount.
Örnek 2. The new employee must have finished the report, because it is already on my desk.
Örnek 3. Although the film received poor reviews, most people who watched it enjoyed it.

En büyük tuzak: kelime benzerliğine kanmak. YDT'de çeldiriciler bilerek kök cümlenin sözcüklerini bol bol tekrar eder. En çok ortak kelimeyi taşıyan şık tanıdık geldiği için doğru sanılır; oysa çoğu zaman anlamı bir yerinden kaydıran tuzaktır. Doğru şık ise farklı kelimelerle yazıldığından “yabancı” durur. Kelime avı yapma, anlam denkliği ara.
The biggest trap: being fooled by word similarity. In YDT, distractors deliberately repeat the stem sentence's words abundantly. The option carrying the most shared words is thought to be correct because it feels familiar; yet it is usually a trap that shifts the meaning somewhere. The correct option, written with different words, looks “foreign”. Don't hunt for words; look for equivalence of meaning.
