Bu sayfadaki anlatım ve çözümler Türkçedir; sınavda karşına çıkacak cümleler ve şıklar İngilizce olduğu için örnekler İngilizce verilmiştir. YDT seviyesi B1-B2 olduğundan bağlamlar günlük ve erişilebilir tutulmuştur.
The explanation and solutions on this page are in English; because the sentences and options you will face in the exam are in English, the examples are given in English. Since the YDT level is B1-B2, the contexts are kept everyday and accessible.
In a YDT sentence-completion question you are given half a sentence; you are asked to choose the missing half from five complete clauses below it. The correct option must pass two tests at once: grammar (tense, modality, subject agreement) and logic (cause-effect, contrast, condition, time relationship). On this page you will find the connectors that reveal the type of the blank, a step-by-step solving method, and three worked examples at B1-B2 level.
In a YDT sentence-completion question, half of a single sentence is given and the other half is left blank. The blank can be at the beginning, middle or end of the sentence. What is asked of you is to fill the blank with one of the five options below it. The critical point is this: each option is a complete clause — that is, it carries its own subject and predicate and is about 7-14 words long. You will not face short options that are a single word or just a connector.
That is why the question actually measures two skills at once:
Key idea. The correct answer is the only option that passes both the grammar filter and the logic filter together. An option may be written in flawless English but be eliminated because its direction of meaning is reversed; another option may look attractive in meaning but fall because of a tense mismatch.
In YDT, this type contains more accessible contexts than YDS: B1-B2 topics such as school, family, travel, shopping and daily habits. The vocabulary barrier is low; the real distinction appears in being able to read the logic of the sentence. This is good news for you: an unknown word does not stop you, as long as you correctly establish the relationship between the two halves of the sentence. Indeed, most YDT candidates make mistakes even though they understand the individual words; because at the moment of decision they trust the option that sounds most familiar rather than the direction the connector points to.
The length of the options is also a warning sign. Because all five options are complete clauses, the difference between them rests not on a few words but on the thought the whole sentence carries. So instead of comparing the options word by word, you need to add each one to the given half and evaluate the meaning as a whole. Finding the correct option is really choosing the half that builds the most coherent story.
Cümle tamamlamada acele okuyup ilk kulağa hoş gelen şıkkı işaretlemek en sık yapılan hatadır. Bunun yerine sabit bir sıra izle. Aşağıdaki dört adım, doğru şıkkı güvenle bulmanı sağlar. Bu yöntem zamanla otomatikleşir; ilk denemelerde adımları bilinçli uyguladıkça, sınavda saniyeler içinde aynı refleksi gösterirsin.
In sentence completion, reading in a hurry and marking the first option that sounds nice is the most common mistake. Instead, follow a fixed order. The four steps below let you find the correct option with confidence. This method becomes automatic over time; as you apply the steps consciously in your first attempts, you will show the same reflex within seconds in the exam.
Cümle tamamlamanın kalbi bağlaçlardır. Verilen yarıdaki bağlaç, boşluğun hangi mantıksal yöne gitmesi gerektiğini âdeta bir tabela gibi gösterir. Aşağıdaki tabloyu ezberlemek, sınavda saniyeler kazandırır.
| Bağlaç | İlişki türü | Boşluk ne beklemeli? |
|---|---|---|
| although / even though / though | Zıtlık | Beklenenin tersi, şaşırtıcı bir durum |
| whereas / while | Karşıtlık (iki taraf) | Diğer tarafla çelişen, çoğu kez farklı özneli bir bilgi |
| because / since / as | Neden | Verilen durumu açıklayan gerekçe |
| so / therefore / thus | Sonuç | Verilen nedenden doğal olarak çıkan sonuç |
| if / unless / provided that | Koşul | Zaman-kip uyumlu bir koşul veya sonucu |
| so that / in order that | Amaç | Yapılan işin hedefi |
| when / before / after / as soon as | Zaman | Olayların doğru sıralaması |
Pratik ipucu.
The heart of sentence completion is connectors. The connector in the given half shows, like a signpost, which logical direction the blank must take. Memorising the table below saves seconds in the exam.
| Connector | Relationship type | What should the blank expect? |
|---|---|---|
| although / even though / though | Contrast | The opposite of what is expected, a surprising situation |
| whereas / while | Contrast (two sides) | Information that conflicts with the other side, often with a different subject |
| because / since / as | Cause | A reason that explains the given situation |
| so / therefore / thus | Result | The result that naturally follows from the given cause |
| if / unless / provided that | Condition | A tense-modality-consistent condition or its result |
| so that / in order that | Purpose | The goal of the action |
| when / before / after / as soon as | Time | The correct sequence of events |
As you read the table, fix this distinction: although and whereas both set up contrast but work differently. Although emphasises an unexpected result within the same situation (like rain falling while the weather is sunny). Whereas, on the other hand, places two separate sides side by side to compare them and usually expects the subject to change. Likewise, because is used to give the cause first, while so is used to give the result afterwards; the two reverse the direction of the sentence, so pay close attention to which one is given.
Practical tip. With contrast connectors (although, whereas) the correct option is almost always information that breaks the expectation. After saying “The weather was going to be sunny... although...”, the correct half must go in the direction of “but it rained”; an option that confirms the expectation, like “we went for a picnic”, never fits with a contrast connector.
The connector can also be inside the options. In that case look at the agreement between the given half and the connector in the option: if the given part is a result, the correct option may be one that gives its cause with a because clause. So always find the connector first, then establish the relationship.
Aşağıdaki üç örnek B1-B2 seviyesindedir. Her birinde önce yöntemi uygula, sonra çözümü oku. Şıkların hepsinin tam cümlecik olduğuna ve doğru cevabın iki filtreyi birden geçtiğine dikkat et.
Örnek 1. Although the weather forecast had promised a sunny afternoon, ----
Örnek 2. ----, the students were able to finish the group project on time.
Örnek 3. My brother loves spending his free time outdoors, whereas ----
The three examples below are at B1-B2 level. In each, apply the method first, then read the solution. Note that all the options are complete clauses and that the correct answer passes both filters at once.
Example 1. Although the weather forecast had promised a sunny afternoon, ----
Example 2. ----, the students were able to finish the group project on time.
Example 3. My brother loves spending his free time outdoors, whereas ----
Dikkat: Aşağıdaki hatalar, doğru cevabı bildiğin hâlde yanlış işaretlemene yol açar.
Note: The mistakes below cause you to mark the wrong answer even when you know the correct one.
Soruyu işaretlemeden önce şu beş maddeyi zihninden geçir. Hepsine “evet” diyebiliyorsan cevabından emin olabilirsin.
Before marking the question, run through these five items in your mind. If you can say “yes” to all of them, you can be sure of your answer.
